Got my S3 few days ago, and already in first evening noticed annoying black spots in bottom of screen. At first thought that I broken it, but searching found many threads about this issue.
As i understand practically everyone has them, there's just difference in quantity.
I took picture of my screen displaying black screen in dark:

What do you think? Guy at shop said that this is normal amoled issue.
I wouldn't mind about little spots, as i cant really see them, but those lines on right are really visible when watching videos in dark, even in not complete darkness, and is really annoying.

I would say exchange it. I have this issue too but only visible when I'm in very dark environment lighting. And it only visible when im running gray background too. I have 2 ink mark visible to eyes and 3 very small one which have to squint my eyes.

I think you'd be lucky if they changed it. I've seen much worse - mine, for example. Unless you always use your phone in the dark I wouldn't worry IIWY.
Saw some pictures with muck less spots, so i thought that mine has lot.
I guess the I'll have to live with it.
Although this doesn't seem normal if you take into account price tag of this phone.
This seems to be common issue with phones using the amoled display. As long as it doesnt cause problems during normal usage of the phone, it will most likely not get replaced. There is a very high possibility that the replacement will also have the same issue.
Yours are fine, I've seen worse from my friends S3.
I would rather having this problem over black crush/pixelation. Driving me crazy. Hopefully it'll be fixed by software update since screen filter app's able to solve it.

So being that im a tv whore (own a krp kuro) i was playing some pioneer demo material on my gs2. The demo has a ton of awesome dark scenes that really show off how black these amoled displays can get.
There was one part where there was just a black screen for about 10 seconds. Since i was in a dark room my eyes adjusted and noticed all these Blotches all over the black screen. Is this normal? I see it on a 100% black background that i created as well. Any one else have this issue? It kinda dumb i know since i only see this in a dark room with a black screen but its bugging me now. I would be devastated if my kuro looked like that in a dark scene so my phone isnt any different.

Righto. So I just took a picture of all black, then let my eyes adjust to the screen in the dar.... AND HOLY MOTHER OF MAY I? YES YOU CAN, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY SCREEN?!
Are all screens like this? Is there something that causes this? Because I honestly don't remember ever seeing these blotches on my screen, and i even looked once before.
Now it's so bad it looks like my phone has some venireal disease or skin-touchscreen cancer.

Seems like people are getting into a very humorous mood with the holidays, and it's spilling over to even serious threads.
What you describe is a defect of the screen. When the phone first came out, and for the first few weeks, there were a number of people who reported problems with the screen. The way to test the screen that was suggested at that time is exactly what you did with the black screen in a darkened room. I tried that test, and my phone has a completely black screen, with no light patches.
For some reason, there havn't been many reports at all since the first few weeks. You are only the second person I've seen to mention it, I think, since then.
The people that had the bad screens just exchanged their phones until they got a good one. Of course, at that time everyone was still within the 30 day period.
I was bein serious creep. I might have been comical in reply, but i genuinely want to know why my screen looks like crap now.

Do I think that since samsung screwed up on all these screens they are just saying that? Absolutely. But I also think that anyone who says they don't have it at all just maybe doesn't have it as bad. When I had the T989, it was so visible it annoyed the **** outta me, and it wasn't just splotches, but it was lines and stuff too. Now, I'm on my 2nd i777, and the first one had the splotches, not too bad though, and the current one I have is even less, but it is there, although you really have to stare and allow your eyes to adjust to see it. I think the next generation of amoled displays should have this little kink worked out, but if you look on the Razr forums, the t989 forum, and the skyrocket forum, they all have it as well. Its an all around AMOLED issue, and i dont think any displays with a Super AMOLED+ display are without it.
I'm the one who said my phone has a completely dark screen with no light patches. Well, that was a couple of months ago that I tested it, and I decided to do another test today. My house has a room with no window, so it is easy to get a completely darkened room.
When you put a black image on the screen in a dark room, the screen is not completely black. If you set the screen timeout to 30 minutes, and let your eyes completely adjust to the dark, the screen actually looks rather light, a sort of greyish. But the shade of grey and amount of light intensity theoretically should be uniform across the screen.
My screen is actually pretty uniform, but there is a slight gradation to darker arount the edges, a little more pronounced toward the top and bottom than on the sides. There is one very tiny area at the very top of the screen right on the edge directly below the AT&T logo, that is significantly darker than the rest of the screen. The difference in light intensity is not very much, but it is noticable.
The gradation of light intensity on this screen is so slight that it would be impossible to detect any difference in light intensity in normal screen use. People who have reported this problem are the ones whose screen is so variable, that they can see the difference during normal screen use. And if you would test one of those screens in a dark room, I'm told you would see a very marked difference in the light intensity.
So I say that if a screen is such that you can tell the difference when using the screen under normal conditions, then it is defective. But what Samsung or AT&T will say and do about it, I don't know. I havn't seen any reports from anyone that has tried to exchange their phone for that reason.
I tested screen out last night too and saw a few darker splotches around the bottom and side. Then my ocd kicked in. I was considering exchanging the phone today, but after reading this thread decided against it. Thank you all for the info

I had mine set to maximum brightness.
My screen also has the blotchiness but honestly i cant think of one time where this was a problem. you just dont notice it ever in day to day use and if you have to get in a dark room with an all black screen to notice it then i dont care.

So I've noticed lines and stuff when I go into the market/google play (the grey shows multiple verticle and horizontal lines, but I have to look a little hard. Not too big a deal.) However, I tried using auto brightness which defaults much lower than I had it set to manually and the screen shows tons of lines everywhere. For instance, I use ryude's unoriginal rom, and with the stock messenger (bright white) I get a ton of lines. I was wondering how many people use auto brightness and if anybody else has this issue. I'm out of the 30 day replacement warranty, but I have an upgrade coming up soon so I'm not super worried about it. But still...

This. I am on my fourth phone and all of the screens have been jacked up with splotches. Some worse than others.I'm going with a super amoled+ thing and less of a defect. Don't get me wrong, it drives my ocd nuts knowing that its there, I just try to avoid situations where you can see the splotches.... especially if I'm trying to show the phone off lol

on my new galaxy s3 i have noticed in dark backround in dark room i have them bloody annoying black spots. i have recearched it but it only says its a common problem for amoled screens. i have about 8 of these spots one which is huge. only noticable in dark room using black screen. do i get replacement or will that just be a waste of my time?

- you're in a very dark room
- you're watching a black screen
There's an easy hardware-fix to this problem; shortly press the button on the right side of the screen and the blotches will disappear, while the rest of the image (read: black screen) remains intact. [/IRONY]
It's, as you found out, a common sight on AMOLED however it's not an issue. These pixels are simply darker than the others.

i was planning to but how am i going to prove to the retailer of my problem? first of all it will need to be a very dark room which is unlikely in a shopping mall unless he throws a blanket over his head lol. second of all some people see these things more easily than others, the staff member might not be able even in the right conditions to spot any marks....

I too found 2 dots on my phone. I returned it immediately, got a new one after a week, found 3 dots now . I dont know what to do now.
Even if you return it a million times you'll still get some...
According to supercurio it's a software issue (trigger voltage slightly too low or something like that) and will be fixed with his upcoming 'Display Expert' app
I had some on my S2 and now on my nexus.. To prove it you can download an app called LCD Text (AMOLED) from the market (it has the logo of an RGB circle pattern) and then set it to full brightness and black screen, you will notice them very quickly.

Looks like Samsung is unable to mass-produce flawless AMOLED displays at the moment because so many people report this issue so this is not an isolated example.
yea well as i mentioned seems though swapping for new one might help or it might just make the problem worse. i think its a factory fault. i mean it does not efect the phone abilities at all but its dam anoying???

Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III....HTC ONE S....and all of them got same **** man. And is nothing to do about it.

So i just got my S3. Its the 32gb White one :victory:
I'm familiar with most of the 'issues' regarding the S3. Here's what i've checked so far:
1) pink/yellow screen tint - I'm extremely happy that i do not have this issue, my whites are white
2) ink marks on screen - i checked this out. I have about 4 dots, they're all extremely tiny, i actually had to squint to see them so i was quite happy about this
3) Black Crush - Unfortunately i've noticed this issue. I watched the iron man 2 trailer and the "black crush" effect was definitely visible. It also effected a pic i was viewing. I used filter screen and that largely resolves the issue but it says that it can potentially mess up an AMOLED screen
Whats the deal with this issue. I heard supercurio is working on a fix, does that mean its not hardware related? or would it be wise of me to go in and exchange my device?
4) Some people have been having wifi issues. So far it mostly seems okay havent experienced any serious issues yet.
I've browsed the forums and these seem to be the main issues relating to the phones hardware. What other issues or defects should i check for? The place i purchased it from has a 7-day return policy so i want to make sure i have the best possible unit, since this is my phone for the next 2 years
One other thing which isnt really an issue. Amoled screens are boasted to have very dark/true black because the screen tech can turn individual pixels off, why is it that the black on the S3 doesnt seem that deep and it seems as if all the pixels are on? i'm just interested to know why it is like this

My white is white too but not as white as my laptop monitor. it is not pink or yellow for me but not as white as white should be. I can live with this
black crush is there too i check with gamma pattern test. i can only see till 8. the 7 i can see the number but the border gone. So far not effecting my experience with the phone
also, some ink black mark is noticeable in gray or low gamma setting. i can see about 2 ink without squinting my eyes but if i squint i can see another 3 ink black on my screen. (This one i can live with it too but just wish there is not ink mark for a device this expensive..) - i checked with cousin S3 too, he had one ink mark in a same spot as me but his ink mark is less then me. I don't know if i need to exchange but when i search about this, it seems all samsung S3 has this

I tried the Flashlight App and white is completely white without the slightest tint so the phone is capable of proper white.
I need one on HSPA+. I can get that through t-mobile right?

My only gripe with this phone is the touchwiz launcher redraw.. it happens too often for my liking.

Its only noticeable when the room is dark and the screen is dark.
For example, when I'm about to go to bed all lights off and I read stuff here on xda using the dark theme. I notice some black spots in the screen. They're everywhere in mine and its annoying.
Can you guys try it and let me know if I'm not the only one.
To see it better try using screen filter app from the market and lower the brightness.
Download the picture and open it with gallery. Zoom in to fill up the whole screen. Let me know if you guys have this too

you're not the only one. it's a known thing w amoled screens. i have 2 big ones near bottom of screen n many tiny dots. doesn't really bother me. don't wanna go through hassle of trying to exchange not knowing if new one would have or not

Yeah, at this point it's pretty much normal.
You should of seen all the fuss people made about the S2 and even donated a phone to a well known dev to try and somehow fix it only to never get anything back from that dev and everybody's phone still remained the same. Lol.
Some might have it more than others, but at the end we have no choice but to deal with it unless you want to get a different phone.

i'm dealing with it lol this is my first samsung amoled phone and didn't know about the issue til i saw it one night and was like wth? lol but even then, it didn't bother me since you can only see it in a dark room on a black screen.

I just tested my screen and I have a few very tiny dots then a really nice size one which I wish wasn't there. The little ones don't bother me so much.

I finally got around to testing mine last night, too, and I got lucky as I couldn't detect any ink blotches whatsoever. Even when they are there, they're not noticeable in regular conditions.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Download a completely black image from google images or wherever.
2) Open it fullscreen, turn your phone off, turn the lights off.
3) Wait 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust to pitch black darkness, then turn your phone back on with the black image displayed
4) Check the screen for non-uniformity
I have the problem as well. It does suck, but for me it's not really worth having to go through the exchange steps to get a different one.
I always wondered about them but figured it was just normal I have a big one dead center of the screen. Kinda like a target. Lets hope not for that reason though
guess, I got lucky. My first S3 had 3 spots. The new one is clean!
I'm definitely disappointed with the blacklevels on this display - at least when viewed in extremely dark environments.
I have 1 quite significant black line, and a few dots too. Bleh... wonder what's changed since the S1 screens - black levels were WAY better, and none of this ink marking.
I noticed the black dots, too, but I was able to make them go away with some carefully applied Liquid Paper. No more black dots. Does anyone else have a problem with white dots?

Unfortunately mine has a yellow tint to the screen, as a lot of other users seem to have too looking at the various threads about this issue. This is clearly visible when displaying white, but also the greys are affected. The whites appear to be more yellow when brightness is at its lowest. The whites are less yellow at maximum brightness. In direct comparison to the S3 of my girlfriend all this is easily noticible. In addition, in direct comparison between both phones the front cover of my S3 looks darker than hers. So I was wondering: could it be that this yellow tint which is noticible and which is already reported by lots of people, is due to some kind of coating of the front cover? So in fact it isn't due the AMOLED screen itself, but due to the tint of the cover, which thus functions like some kind of filter?
I hope I have some time this week to return to the shop, and see if I can exchange my phone for another one...

Can you check the batch/date/country of your phone and let us know? It might be the new batch and can be the glass glue which is still not fully dried. I remember my iphone 4 32gb had this issue and i waited a week or 2 and it disappeared. Due to high demand the phones are shipped out much quicker and may take sometime for things like these to dry out.

Yep, if you tell me where I can find this information?
Yesterday evening I've been to another shop, and I've seen two other Pebble Blue devices. Both the front covers were lighter blue than mine SGS3, and the screens were more white as well...
It's on the back after you remove the battery. Also there is date/country on battery.

Same here and also Pebble Blue model...and it sucks! It literally ruins my day when you realize you shed 660 euro for...this crap of a display! Already installed Screed Adjuster from the Market (hate the new "Play store" name!!) but it's of little consolation. I think Samsung SCREWED UP big time this time and i'm toying with an idea of changing the model and, for that matter, getting out of Samsung followers as i've bee all these years. It's a shame 'cause I've been on all Galaxies ever and now they let me down.

Already installed Screed Adjuster from the Market (hate the new "Play store" name!!) but it's of little consolation. I think Samsung SCREWED UP big time this time and i'm toying with an idea of changing the model and, for that matter, getting out of Samsung followers as i've bee all these years. It's a shame 'cause I've been on all Galaxies ever and now they let me down.

I went back to the store and showed the problem. They agreed on me, and said it looked like someone threw coffee over it. They gave me a new phone without further discussion. The new one has a nice white screen.
Unfortunately this one has another issue; when I push the capacitive back button (and the phone is in silent/vibrating mode) I can hear a noise/static hiss coming from the speaker, which dissappears after 4 - 5 seconds...
However, the screen is way better, and looks rather nice. I suggest you go back as well and ask for a replacement.
