Hey there guys, im not super phone savy although I can follow simple instructions and know the android OS fairly well. However i'm not super familiar or confident in the leaked/beta ROMS I hear about sometimes. I recently noticed on GSMarena that my GS2 is supposedly upgradable to 4.04. Any suggestions or recommendations on the most recent/reliable/stable ICS build to try? Also will I lose anything by upgrading? I've been told the kernel will no longer be rooted [which is OK I think] but do I lose my unlock as well?? Since im on Rogers and it's originally a Bell phone, I just want to be certain I can still use it if I upgrade. Any help would be great. My info is as such:
Phone Model - GT-I9100M
Android Version - 2.3.3
Baseband Version - I9100MUGKG2
Kernel Version - [email protected]#2
thanks!

In light of #2, I'd suggest not going to 4.0.4 for now.

Yes, you'll lose root, but no, you will not lose your unlock.

Should still work on Rogers, if that's what you're asking.

My bad on the post. Thought it was a help forum after all. Thank you also for the advice against 4.0.4. I might just stick to 2.3.3 for now until they release 4.0.4 officially since I hear 4.0.3. is pretty buggy,
Buggy? Not at all.
My S2 was buggy in 2.3.3. In ICS 4.0.3 my problems were solved.
mm..if i already flash a 4.0.4 & lose root, how do i get it back @ revert to other roms?..

Same Problem
If anyone comes up wit a good link or video that will be very helpful
I have this same phone and took a look at the links in the second post. However the kernel numbers don't seem to be following the same format as the links in the thread.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this kernel on the c spire galaxy s showcase?
I tried Odin3 and it messed up my phone and I had to go get a new one.
I'm also looking for help on this as well.
SuperOneClick
I'm having the same issues. I have tried SuperOneClick and it stops on step 6.
I'm having the same problem too after updating to 2.3.5. Super one click freezes on step 6.
Same issue with my CSpire SGS running 2.3.5. I do think that speed and battery life are improved over 2.2, but I miss my root.

If you used Odin, I doubt that it messed up your phone. What did you try to flash with Odin?

Did you guys do the official update with Kies? Send me a PM for a way to get a rooted ROM on your Showcase.
I did so the official update from C Spire. I'm not interested in a custom rom I just want to root my phone so I can use wifi tether with my galaxy tab again.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've ran several custom roms on my phone, but would like the option to just run stock with root so I can remove all of the bloatware from CSpire.
I've also had various issues with some other roms, ranging from no auto-rotate to glitchy in-call audio.

Ok, just saw this in another post... if you want just stock rooted:

Thank _josh__ for that one...

(Same method but with consolidated attachment and directions)
Cannot figure out adb.
I've tried all things to reroot after gingerbread update. Now I'm here to try this method. I cannot however figure out the command process. Can someone please be a bit, or a lot, more explanatory. I'm probably the most noobish person here.
Thanks!
I want stable gingerbread with root.
I'm on gingerbread 2.3.5 c spire.
Galaxy s i500.
I have odin and do not know how to use it.

This worked great. I did have to reboot (as you always should...I just get impatient sometimes...) to get everything flowing smoothly. It scared me on reboot because I thought it was getting hung up, but right before I pulled the battery it went to the screen lock. Phew.
Thanks guys!
Im not able to get Odin to recognize my phone. Is there another way?
I suck at this. I want to root my phone but can never do it right. I have the C spire Samsung Galaxy S with 2.3.5. Can you please help... email me please, [email protected]
Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S GT-I9000 (Bell Vibrant, I believe) and he has this version of ICS installed on it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1649345&page=12
I want to downgrade to Cyanogenmod 7 simply to get a bit more performance out of the phone. But, i'm not sure exactly what I have to do, to accomplish this.
Android Version 4.0.4
Baseband: i9000UGKG3
Kernel 3.0.8-Semaphore_ICS_1.2.2
Build Number GT-i9000 4.0.4 IMM761
Mod Version ICS_F4k_MOD_V4.0.4_r3
Do I have to find and install a new kernel? The one I have says ICS, but i'm not sure if that will work for Gingerbread too or not.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
WEll, to makes things worse, I followed the advice of someone from this forum http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...n-mod-on-phone-that-is-already-rooted-at-404/ and now my phone is stuck in a boot loop.
Crap, now i'm not sure what to do.
Flash a firmware with 3 files PDA, MODEM and CSC using ODIN. If you don't have a firmware with 3 files, download this http://androidadvices.com/valuepack-update-samsung-galaxy-face-unlock-i9000-xxjvu-236/3/ and then update to a newer firmware like JW4 or JW5.
Ok, just to clarify something before i do this. my galaxy S is the international one, not the T-mobile vibrant, will this guide work fine for mine?
Thanks,

Thanks, I flashed over the all the files and was greated by the default Gingerbread theme. Flashed over to Cyanogenmod from there with no issues.
Thanks again, worked great.
Sorry to hijack a thread, but can this be done on a Moto Droid Razr?
I did the OTA update to ICS, and can't stand it. Want to go back to GB.
Any options? Or is this being worked on?
Thanks in advance.

Ok I know this must be a common question and I have searched however there appears not to be a guide on how to root a stock 2.3.6 phone. I received my phone from a warranty replacement and it came stock with 2.3.6 and all the methods i see have issues rooting 2.3.6 (Breaking wifi) so please help.
Yes Total noob here trying to get ICS and unlock hotspot function on phone. Been reading like crazy and feel pretty lost...
If you take a look in the dev section, theres a thread showing the different ways you can root. (I can't post links for some reason)
Long story short, you have to go back to 2.3.4, root, then update to 2.3.6. You can also download and flash a different kernel that will enable root. Personally, if it were me, I would wait about a week before rooting or updating anything, beuase theres talk of an official ICS release being released on kies.
It seems to be smoother than gingerbread, and thats saying something.
Ok but the official version will still be locked on tethering hotspotting yes?
Or will the devs start working around the official version to root it so we can unlock that functionality?
Main reason I need wifi hotspot is I have a GPS that needs to be able to connect to wifi to get updates on traffic weather ect..

As said above go to the dev section to see how to root. Also if you want with the stock ROM and WiFi teathering go here http://goo.gl/DqmJN.

Says who? The general consensus is that GB is still much smoother as far as touch response goes.
I'm running Official ICS Release from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948
Also the latest siyah kernel. This is running very well and I have no regrets going this route but I can't honestly say it is smoother than gingerbread.

To be completely fair, whether or not the phone runs smoothly depends more on the kernel than on the rom. So the performance you're getting running LE5 rooted with Siyah kernel isn't necessarily indicative of the performance of stock unrooted LE5.

I know; I was just stating it for everyone else.
Hello, I'm currently using an SK17i, it's been debranded from Orange using Wotanserver. It's currently sim unlocked too. I want to keep it as stock as possible but I'm fed up of Gingerbread since using my smooth as silk N7.
I want to put 4.0.4 (or latest/smoothest) on it without messing with the bootloader (which can be unlocked) or root if possible.
Also, are there battery issues running 4.0.4 on older hardware like this?
I've still got a few credits with Wotan but the latest they have for UK phones is 2.3.4, would it be safe to use a generic FW from a different part of the world, or more plainly, a 'Generic world version' with it working with my internet settings.

It would be a lot harder to do this if you were willing to root. I would try this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792
Also try the rooting guides in the General section if you decide to go that way.
If you have more questions, you should probably post into one of the guides or into Q&A.

Took a risk and updated to the Central Europe 4.0.4 in Wotan, texts, internet and calls work so I'm happy!
Ok got a question?
First off I am by no means new to the android dev community as I have developed a rom for the sgs-II for At&t before my when in the toilet, anyways I am now on a Telus Samsung galaxy note I717D running:
Android 4.1.2
Baseband Vers. i717dTLMD1
Kernel Vers. 3.0.31-1112295
Build number: JZO54K.I717DTLMD1
TWRP RECOVERY
The phone is not rooted as far as it tells me however I am able to flash any rom I want through twrp recovery. anyways I am using tmobile sim
the question is this has any one flashed a tmobile or at&t modem/radio onto a Telus phone with any luck? if not any recommendations on getting better signal cause mine is **** at this point when I switched my sII to tmobile my signal was pretty decent not the best but still good.
Ok so after a couple of days and np responses i guess i am off to expirment city and will try what i ever o get my hands on and will report back to let others know

Hi there,
From my understanding of your comment you're trying to root your phone correct? If so, I can suggest you check http://www.kingoapp.com. The reason why I suggest it is because it's pretty easy to do; it is how I rooted my i717. Check it out and if you'd like try it.. it's kind of like a one click root way to go about rooting your phone, if you'd like to try obviously.
Cheers,
