Hi all,
First post - here goes.....
One of the primary reasons I got the SGS3 (UK 3 network) was to get broadband at home - where I live (deep dark west cornwall) I cant get decent internet via the fixed landline yet I found (and tested) that with a yaggi antenna on my roof and a repeater I can get ridicoulously fast mobile data (10Mb/s) thorugh my SGS3 whereas my landline (which I pay alot for) can barely reach 1Mb/s.
Anyway from tests so far it "seems" that connecting via USB tethering is faster than setting up a wifi hotspot however every time I connect using USB tethering it sets up a new network (I am now on Network 68!!!) on my computer - Maybe this isn't a problem but it really annoys me. By this time next year I'll be on Network one thousand and something which knowing MS will clog things up. Also tethering via USB cable has really varied connection times - sometimes it takes 5 minutes before its all recognised and running.
Wifi tethering is really quick and simple - It connects instantly but "seems" to provide slower internet on my computer compared with USB tethering.
What is really odd is that if I do a speed test on my phone using Speedtest.net app on my phone I get 8-10Mb/s but if I run a speed checker on my tethered laptop it isn't as fast. Is there any mod/fix I can apply so that when I am at home and tethered the speed is "channeled" as optimally as possible to my laptop?
Best regards
Ginyons

I live in uni accomodation, and unfortunately WiFi routers will not work in the rooms.
Is there any way of using my rooted GSM Hero as a USB WiFi Adaptor from my PC?
Ie: share my PC's internet over WiFi using the Hero connected via USB so I can wirelessly connect with stuff like my DSi and PSP.
There's an official Nintendo WiFi USB dongle that does this job, so I'm hoping there's also a way for the Hero to do it. I've used the PDAnet app for my Hero for USB tethering that basically is the exact reverse of what I want (it receives WiFi on the hero, shares it to PC).
Anyone know how to do this?
Wireless tether do the trick?search forums for it
Unless it has been written with a great deal of flexibility in mind, I doubt it. While wifi tether will let the OP connect his handheld consoles to his Hero, I suspect they'll be hard coded to forward this traffic over the GSM interface, whereas what I think the OP is after is the ability to forward the traffic over usb to his PC which I assume has a cabled connection to his uni network.
What s/he needs is simultaneous wifi & usb tethering with the abilty to route between the two. I've not come across anyone doing this before, though it's clearly just a matter of having the right software for the job. Not a trivial exercise to write it, alas.
The best chance would probably be if the author of the wifi tether app is still active & would be interested in adding this functionality to their existing app.
I would say you would have to
Use your hero to create Internet connection
Bridge that connection to wireless card in computer

Once of us has misread the OP. I took the OP's PC to have no wifi connection.
[Edit:] Hmm, I could be mistaken; I'm less certain now.

It's only just occurred to me to ask, why don't wifi routers work? Is it a matter of rules & regulations? Otherwise I'm somewhat confused.
If it is simply a matter that the only equipment you're allowed to connect directly to the network is a PC you register with the sys admins, I'd be inclined to stick a second network card in the PC (assuming your uni connection is via the primary ethernet port) & use this to connect to your (existing?) wifi router which you use purely as a wifi access point. That'd cost you less than a fiver, assuming you already have a wifi router or access point.
I would stick to the rules however. Unless you're sure you know what you're doing they might spot attempts to connect disallowed equipment from the resulting traffic.
you can use the hero as a wifi dongle?im using it now with internet sharing on and just connected to wifi?
Ok guys , Ive currently had to cancel my internet due to lack of funds. But im still on contract with TMobile and have internet via my HD2 via them. Now i play XBox Live and i know for a fact its possible through internet sharing i can use Live with my HD2.
Reasons for this are :
1. TMobile / 3 / O2 Dongles are WIDELY used for people using broadband to connect and thus after sharing have a steady connection via to online game.
2. I managed to get some connectivity via WinXP on my VMachine.
Now what im asking is simple , can anyone help me get sharing stable and working for Window 7 or Windows Vista?
The reason im asking is because the connection im using is a RNDIS connection so the networks cant be bridged. Leaving me no connectivity.
Only other thing i can think of is using it was a wireless router and connecting wirelessly to it , then sharing it to the 360.
Now before i get flamed saying ITS NOT POSSIBLE , and OMG PHONE INTERNET SUCKSSSSSSSS. Ill give you a run down. Many of my gaming buddies use a dongle + laptop + Xbox setup and game very well. Having a 3 - 4 bar out of 5 strength. When using speedtests they are running 1 - 1.5mbps internet.
When i run a speedtest with my HD2 connecting via USB wire , Max i managed to get from Tmobile was a 4mb connection , im actively stable at 2mbps , downloading at roughly 200 - 240 KBPS. Which is optimum. I get more Upload speed from my HD2's mobile internet than my old BT 10MB broadband , BT was 47KBPS up , TMobile is 82KBPS up.
Thanks for looking and any advice given.

Hey watch out man your only allowed to us 5 gigs of data. Even though you unlimited.
I usually just use Mobile AP from my Vibrant to my Tab, but I'm wondering if USB tethering will get me faster speeds? My signal at work sucks, so if the usb tethering would be faster, I'd like to order the adapter. Thank you.
If you are talking about your cell signal sucking, then it wouldnt matter if you were tethering via usb or wifi.
I tether to my tab from my old htc hero and the speeds are 3gish. The battery just doesn't last too long.
i really hope the title made since but if it didnt hear is what im wondering is possible to do in any way with any app. i know how to use my G2 as a wifi and usb hotspot via tmobiles blazing fast 2meg service here in louisiana but what i actually would like to be able to do is have my home charter internet from my wifi router to my G2 and from the G2 to my new desktop via usb cable (doesnt have wifi and im out of usb wifi adapters). So basically .....Netgear wifi router>HTC G2>Usb cable>Desktop. Is this even a remote possibilty or am i stuck using the 2meg (5gig limit) tmobile connection? thanks for any help that can be offered, veritasaequita
So you're essentially attempting to utilize the phone as a WiFi adapter, correct? If that is the case, I'm pretty sure you can connect to WiFi and then connect the phone to your PC in internet tethering mode.
that is exactly what im wanting to do, im gonna try it real quick. i hadnt tried it because as i recalled when wifi connects usb greys out but i could be thinking of wifi tethering doing that. ima give it a quick try and post back. thanks for lending a hand
You're very welcome
Hello,
I just got my HTC One X+AT&T two weeks ago. It is now unlocked and rooted (CMW).
From the start the HOX has a very poor wifi at my home, at my laptop I have 4 bars but my HOX shows only 1 most of the time and 2 bars at most, and disconnects often. I get my wifi Internet from my landlord, so I cannot adjust the router. Though the phone has a good signal at work (where the signal is super strong and my cubicle is like 1 meter away from the router). My signal at home is not as strong as in my job, but at home I can watch Youtube videos just fine, so the sign is not that awful.
I read about the HOX wifi hardware issue, but I rather not try to open the HOX up and fix it myself. I bought the phone at Ebay, so I cant return it.
I tried the Reverse Tether app, I enabled USB tethering on my phone, and the app starts to connect but at the end it shows an error: Failed make sure you have internet on your pc and that is properly shared.
I tried to create a computers/device network on my Mac, but as soon as I created it, it kicked me out of my wifi. I took off the Firewall, and still does not work. I also tried to make an ad hoc network but it did not work either.
I tried to use Internet Sharing on my Mac to get wifi on the HOX but it does not work since I get my Internet from wifi, and not from an ethernet cable.
I tried the Internet Pass Through featured on the HOX but that did not work, even though I installed the most recent HTC Sync on my Mac, as soon as I tried to enable it, it would kick the HOX offline, and the connection is never made.
I installed Wifi analyzer and I always get between -90 and -80 dBm at most. It kinda helped to stabilize it a bit, but still it gets disconnected often.
I would really appreciate if you guys would kindly help this poor and frustrated soul to enhance HOX wifi reception.
Thanks a lot.
