[Q] Can you confirm this is the right way to do it ? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA Community,
First off, i'm living in France so excuse me for my bad English and for my general noobness...
After a rapid (i'm a bit on a hurry so hope you'll understand) use of the search function, i did not find the answer to my questions so i started this new thread
I have to downgrade my Atrix (w/ bootloader unlocked) from CM7 to stock, i have found the .sbf of the stock rom and have extracted boot.img, system.img + webtop.img (this one may be optional ??) from this .sbf file.
Do i simply have to fash boot.img + system.img using fastboot (i'd better use fastboot instead of RSDlite coz' i've read RSD would certainly hard brick because of the unlocked bootloader, but is it true ) to downgrade my phone ?
Or is it gonna miserably hard brick and force me to pay more than $100 to my telephone company ??
Fast answer would be appreciated as i have to give my phone back to the after sales service in about 10 hours from now , so thank you in advance for any help you could bring me :fingers-crossed:

Don't downgrade to anything below gingerbread. It's better to do it with sbf for the newest one 4.5.141 or use a fruit cake and flash through cwm.

Thanks for your response :good:
The fact is my Atrix is not AT&T bur Orange (the french AT&T lol) so i cannot use fruit cake (or can i ?), i will not downgrade to Froyo but have only managed to find the official 2.3.4 from Orange but my phone runs on 2.3.7 (CM 7.2.0 Olympus)
Is it risky to downgrade from 2.3.7 to 2.3.4 (i'm terrorized by an eventual bootloader issue) ? and if not, can you confirm that flashing boot.img + system.img using fastboot will work ?

This is a warning that multiple users, including myself, have hard bricked their devices by SBF flashing to 1.8.3 after installing an official 4.5.91 update.
How can I avoid this brick?
You can avoid bricking your device by not flashing any over-the-air updates to Android 2.3.4. Instead, try flashing the 2.3.4 zip over here. Or, flash the pure stock images from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342.
What if I already flashed the official 4.5.91?
If you flashed the official update from XDA or by downloading through a dev-blur server (note: this excludes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342), you should avoid flashing SBF files in RSD Lite. We've confirmed this problem exists when users flash the 1.8.3 build specifically. It may happen with other SBF files, though.

Problem solved, i found a rom that only slightly modifies the official one so now, everything is ok :victory:

This is just tells that it's impossible to do with SBF flash. Can this be done via CWM flash instead?
Which GB did you upgrade with? Leaked OTA, Kenneth Penn's, official OTA, etc?

You have not done anything wrong thus far. Which is to say, you haven't burnt a fuse by going to 2.3.4. OTA. As of now, you're capable of reverting back to 1.8.3. without any issues.

I'm assuming you know how to flash? If so, here is the link to all available firmwares:

After reading your post again, I realize you probably don't know how to flash...
Go to our wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Motorola_Atrix_4G) and get RSD Lite (search it if you don't see it)
That's the tool you'll use to flash the firmware you pick out from the first link I gave you.

Not at all, from what I understand... you've not updated with the OTA Update. In which chase you're safe from "the point of no return"
waiting for the brick in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1..............
If you attempt to flash any froyo sbf that doesnt contain pudding pre-applied, and only after you've unlocked, you might as well throw your phone in the toilet.

If you read the post on Kenneth's thread then you would know that ANY Over The Air, OTA, update would result in a hard brick. If you flash Kenneths ROM, Which this guy did, then it is safe to use RSDLite.
I would recommend pointing him in the appropriate direction rather then saying "waiting for the brick" since you do display knowledge of knowing what to do.
From kenneths thread about Hard Bricks!
How can I avoid this Brick?
You can avoid bricking your device by not flashing any over-the-air updates to Android 2.3.4. Instead, try flashing the 2.3.4 zip over here. Or, flash the pure stock images from here.
So is it safe or not to downgrade ROM? Say, can I just download GingerBlur (http://briefmobile.com/gingerblur-rom-for-atrix-4g) and install it using CWM with no repricussions?
I never updated any OTA updates and right now on unlocked bootloaders and Kenn's Gingerbread
Ok, Since everyone rather comment on how not to do it but not point you in the right direction then I will give you the link to a place that is a safe alternative for you.
But first I want to ask you if you tried to flash any other ROM like "Ninja v0.4.5" by samcripp or "Alien" by kenneth? The Alien ROM has the battery fix with it so it is safe and battery life lasts awhile. When I say awhile I mean I did not charge my phone two days and dropped to 30% in a 48 hour period. There is a script by Juggernaut that you can flash to any ROM that fixes the battery spike issue.
But if you rather go backwards to FroYo then here is a link with directions to flash, a new method, Fruit cakes! it's a safe alternative and you flash it through CWM never using RSD ever again. Fruit cakes
If you have any questions I would either ask here or ask on the Fruitcake thread.
HAPPY FLASHING!!!!
A
Thanks. That worked. I'm now on Froyo but still having battery issues. Problem is that Fruitcakes does not contain radio image and I'm still on GB radio. How do I downgrade radio? I don't beleive there is CWM packages for that. If I find radio.img for Froyo can I downgrade it safely via RSD or fastboot without possibility of bricking my phone?
If you have any questions I would either ask here or ask on the Fruitcake thread.
HAPPY FLASHING!!!![/QUOTE]
Well I did some searching and I can only find two threads that are relatively close to a radio on FroYo.. Only difference between our stock ATT and these two are international/tweaked radios.
Tweaked ATT radio

You can always hard brick your phone when you're in RSD; loss of connection between phone & PC, power outage, anything that disrupts the process = (more or less 100% of the cases) hard brick

And for that very reason I try to not SBF my phone unless there's no other way. CWM and fastboot work perfectly fine. Besides that, my main PC is a desktop.
Loss of power = brick. That's why I only use RSD off of laptop.

Hi,
I'm updating the thread, that means waiting for an upload to finish. It adds in everything to get back to stock in one CWM zip, radio and bootloader. The unlocked and fixed zip should be done immediately after in the same CWM recovery session to keep the unlocked bootloader, ram fixed CWM recovery, and ram fixed 2.2.2 boot image. Otherwise you have to reflash IHOP to get the unlocked bootloader back and reflash CWM recovery.
Now, you have to ask yourself if you want to be stock when the final Bell update isn't even out yet.
EDIT: Thread updated
Cheers!
So when the final Bell update, i.e. the official Gingerbread update for the Bell Atrix is released, we won't need all these fixes and such since it will be a stable version? Also, would I be able to update ota without the aformentioned core apps I uninstalled or would it be more wise to stick to custom roms? Thanks.

Hi,
I have no idea how good the official Bell gb will be, the Leak is good. OTA may or may not patch those files, most likely it would.
If you mean AT&T firmware when you say custom roms that's up to you. It's nice to have the option not to use that., for that reason, all the patches. I haven't patched anything with the bell gb leak, works fine. By default it includes several features AT&T folks have to hack in. Not perfect but it's less work.
Cheers!

Hi,
It is volume down when you turn the phone on, says fastboot, click vol down until it says android recovery, then vol up. You have to be unlocked of course, and CWM installed.
If you are doing both at the same time, just 222 gobstopper and then 234 gobstopper which includes the ram fixes. Sometime when I get a chance I'll add in a few partitions to 234 to avoid the 222 step, slow upload connection here. (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 are the partitions left out of 234) And I am not sure if it's needed going from Froyo to Froyo.
Cheers!

NEVER, EVER EVER EVER use RSD except to unlock the bootloader! Flash clockwork mod and stick with cwm zips. You can find official motorola roms in cwm zip format here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
RSD will hard brick your phone if you flash firmware meant for other regions or use it to downgrade!
Also... why would you want the HKTW build? Its meant for the ME860 and not the AT&T MB860, and has horrendous battery life as a result. 4.5.91 should be the current version of Gingerbread, so you'd gain nothing? If you really wanted to, nothing is stopping you form using a cwm zip from the link above though.

Thanks for the info. I am just a noob so RSD seems pretty straightforward to me. I have read some threads here and noticed that its easily got hard-brick when try to downgrade it from 4.5.91 to any older version. But someone suggests that there should be no problem to RSD among 4.5.91s as they use the same bl.
This phone is gonna be given to my friend in China, so for the reason I 'd need to alert the OS. But strange thing is that I saw many users reporting the good battery performance of HKTW build in Chinese forum.

That would be beacuse the ME860 is the Chinese version of the Atrix. The battery life issues are people who flash that build onto an American/European Atrix.
While RSD shouldn't brick from 4.5.91 and higher, going from a build meant for one region to another can still cause problems. The HKTW build is not 4.5.91 if my memory serves me right.

Well, how can we go back to asia?

Waiting is annoying. In particular for us, the razr (maxx) users in asia. After waiting for a day and a day, a month and a month, a delay followed by another, ics update for asia razr has finally be officially informed. This is really a godsend gift from motorola!
Though, some impatient asia razr users (myself inclusive) who has flashed the ics leak, can we go back to the asian retail version? I currently am in t-mobile german 4.0.4 ics leak, how can I flash back my razr to hongkong retail version? Is it just the same way as flashing from german version to european ics version? In fact, if this is the way, i don't quite understand what the boot.img is and how can i get it. Would anyone of the profession gives a helpful hand to us?

One more question, just about flashing logic in my mind.
Process to flash will be:
1. Flashing the boot.img in fast boot.
2. Flashing the stock hk 2.3.5 rom with Rsd.
3. Flashing the ics ota in recovery.
Am i correct? If yes then, how can i get the boot.img for asia version?

guide please ?
Download the latest RSD lite.
Install the program on your Windows computer. ( xp works best for me. Sometimes get errors on win7).
Download the 2.3.6 sbf. Make sure it is the one for your carrier.
Open rsd lite.
Select the sbf file.
Start.
That's what I did. It was simple.
A google search could probably find you a better guide though.
Good luck.
As usual, this is what I have done, and I take no responsibility if it doesn't work for you.
Using rsdlite to flash an .sbf is dangerous if you flash one prior to 2.3.4 gingerbread. All others are safe to my knowledge. But using pudding is easier and faster.

Do not use RSD lite and .sbf. do some searching and you will find that Motorola doesn't condone using RSd lite for public use. Flash the appropriate fruitcakes just like you would a rom except wipe the phone completely (especially when you are down grading. If you do use rsd lite and hard brick your phone I will have no sympathy for you as your phone will be a very expensive paper weight. Many many people have already started forum pages on why you should not use rsd lite. Just my opinion... take it or leave it as you may.

ok, you got me convinced.
Thank you all !
Your welcome... didn't mean to come off harsh, but I'd rather sound harsh then have another fellow member hard brick their phone.. use the search and look for fruitcakes... completely safe, just remember to always have a known working backup as always before upgrading or downgrading versions.

Sorry but there seems to be an issue with all the 2.3.6 fruitcakes...:\
is it ok if i flash this SBF ?
1FF-olympus-user-2.3.6-4.5.141-111212-release-keys-signed-ATT-US-GAS_NA_OLPSGBATTSPE_P012.sbf
I live in Israel and have the ATT atrix 4G running Cm7 now.
The problem with sbf files is if you flash the wrong one. Make sure you have the right one and you will have no problems. Check the other threads. There are alot of us flashing them.
It would solve your problem.
