I9300 on AT&T $50 unlimited prepaid plan - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have an international Galaxy S III which I'm using on AT&T. I have the GoPhone $50 Unlimited everything prepaid plan. However I'm not getting data at all. I can see the "H" and sometiems "H+" just can't access internet. I've read that people have been able to use unlocked version on prepaid data plans. Do I need to tweak some settings?
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Yes unlocked version can be used. I have done that myself. Have you tried verifying apn? Pulling out sim?

Thank you for replying, my apn is Wap. Cingular, also what did you mean by pulling out sim?

Rebooting phone usually does the job.

I tried rebooting the phone as well as pull out battery and sim. still doesn't work. When I called AT&T, they told me they can't tell what phone I'm using, do I need special apn settings?

The IMEI is blocked if data doesn't work. I had an international Note on gophone unlimited and everything worked fine until they somehow found out I was using a smartphone. I had the same problem as you. Saw H signal, but no data. When I got my i9100, the IMEI wasn't blocked and thus the data worked again. Try in another phone if you can.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I checked with customer service and they told me that there's nothing blocking data on my account. Unless they were lying. Trying it in another phone is a luxury I can't afford, the GS3 is my only smartphone. I do have other phones but none of them takes micro sim cards.

It could be a bulk IMEI block by AT&T, that's all I can think of :/ the woman I talked to didn't specifically tell me my Note's IMEI was blocked, but she did know I was using a smartphone even if she couldn't tell me what kind. That's all I can think of though because my i9100 worked fine after my Note :/

update: I called again, the person on the phone told me because my phone isn't an AT&T branded phone so I can't access the web....WTF.

I called them while I was using GSII and got the same reply. They might have asked you the model no, try telling them that it is i747?

To hell with att....just order straight talk sim and pop it in....put in apn settings and your good to go.....its perfect for me....

[Q] Question about Unlocked SIM

Ok so over spring break I'm going to be going away, specifically, the Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and I went before and ran up like a $100 or something on data charges and texting.. But now my SIM card is unlocked as per the guide with the app off the market, so will I still get charged for roaming data, voice and sms? I just want to find out if anyone knows if I still need to go to AT&T and get it worked out there or what?, I'm just not sure exactly how this works.
thanks
If roaming charge not being applied then international rate will do
Or you can use the local network in Bahamas, hope they have GSM there.

No, you have to unlock your sim and use a sim card from the local network that they have there (and if you used their network before, it should be compatible anyways)

If the OP has used their device there previously then I'd say they support GSM.
Just make sure your phone has been unlocked and buy a SIM from a local carrier there and you should be good to go to use their network.

I'm not concerned with compatability with the network, Im mostly just wondering about data charges, Im guessing I'll just have to either plan it out at the store or deal with international charges whatever that's gonna be
You can get the international packages from at&t for a month (its prorated, so if you pay for a week, you only get 1/3 of the whole month), just don't forget to cancel it after you're done. It depends on how much data you use... and 50mb is not alot, I would rather just face the overage charges and try to use as little as you can (use wifi alot or something).

problem is im pretty sure at a hotel like this its gonna be like 30 dollars a day for wifi haha

Go to your destination resort, ask them what mobile phone companies they use there. Or go to a gas station @ your destination & maybe they will sale prepaid mobile phone cards there.

Just about every airport I've been through lately has a kiosk for the local cell phone company. Easiest to grab one there.
Yeah, to clarify you sim card is not unlocked, your phone is sim unlocked. Meaning you can use other carriers sim cards. Even if you unlock, if you have the att sim in while international, you are still roaming, and att will bill you. You should remove your att sim before you depart the us, then look for local Sims upon arrival. As others mentioned make sure the local sim includes data. Also note your phone number will change, and you may need to add the international prefix to text and call people in the us. I would set up a textfree + skype account or similar and use that while traveling for texting or calling, that way you can use your contacts as-is and it uses data vs texting. You can send someone a text via textfree to tell them to hop on Skype, and video call over data or wifi.

Your data charges will be for whatever network you buy a SIM for, look at that carrier's pricing.
SIM-Unlocking an AT&T phone and then continuing to use an AT&T SIM changes *nothing*.

[Q] Note with ATT prepid go phone sim?

I have an LG ATT android go phone and was wondering if I was to buy the Note if I could use the Gophones sim card in the note. I am not a huge fan of contracts and would prefer not to have one.
Thanks for your time,

Not the AT&T Note, but you can with the international Note.

Yeah, unfortunately for the i717 you have to have one of the 4G/LTE sim cards... my Inspire's sim wouldn't even work in it, had to get a new one again.

Your Inspire SIM is 4G, right? Could you ask them for an LTE SIM for the Inspire and then see if it works with the Note. (I assume it will.) GoPhone doesn't have any LTE SIM option right now, correct? Thanks.
Somewhat different, but I have an H20 prepaid SIM I use in my AT&T Note while travelling. No data is available, but voice calls and SMS work just fine.
A thought
Has anyone tried to create a non lte apn and get data working with a non lte sim. I have an lte sim but had created a non lte apn and was using that since there is no lte in Omaha yet.
Cheers.

I have an unlocked Telus Note, and I'll be travelling to California next week. Does this mean I can't use my ATT GoPhone SIM in it?

First off, welcome to XDA.
Yes. You can use a go phone SIM card with the AT&T Note. But I can't personally recommend it.
Just tell a rep that you need a new SIM card (full sized) and they'll give you one. With a go phone account, you may need to bring your LG phone into the store if your name isn't on the account.
As for getting the phone to work properly. There are a few tricks. One that I haven't personally tried is wiping the EFS folder to give the phone a "generic IMEI".
There are a lot of great tutorials for getting most Androids to work with go phone service on XDA. Just keep in mind your data speeds will not be good. (I believe you will be throttled to 1mb dl)
Of course, if you can! I have it so! and I works great but it must be with a new sim card and prepaid active. You can also change the vpn! I did and it works fine!

This doesn't speak specifically to your question about gophone sim cards, but I am using my At&t note with my Straight Talk (At&t network) sim.
Calls, sms, and data all work fine.

[Q] no data service...

I sold my galaxy 2 and bought my note. I kept my sim card from my galaxy 2 so i could use it in the note...problem is i have no internet... Do i need a LTE sim card from at&t so i can get service? Wierd thing is that i have phone service, just no internet :/
Search and read helps.
You need LTE sum card.
Bcoz apn settings in phone is defined for lte and also in mobile networks for packet data types has lte option selected by default.

The reason I asked is that I did search and found conflicting results. Some people say I do need a lte card and some say if I have a 4g card I just need to call AT&T and they can fix it.
If your Sim card just has the globe on it you're fine. You just have to call and have them switch you to a lte data plan.

no service on galaxy s2 sgh-i777?

hey guys my galaxy s2 is currently on shostock2
and the imei is there and everything i get like 2 bars as service but it says emergency call only and i tryed GS11_repair and hc-ktool
i just cant figure out why i get no service and its unlocked i have a tmobile sim card in it but i cant make calls or nothing everything else works fine except it wont connect to tmobiles mobile network i think in network operators tmobile doesnt even show up only at&t
if some one can help me resolve this issue it would be greatly appreciated thanks you
Go under mobile networks and do a carrier search and see if T-Mobile pops up. Are you in a good coverage area? If it says emergency only then you're probably connected to AT&T towers (which shows your radio works, so that's not the issue)
settings -> more (under wireless and network) -> mobile networks -> Network operators -> scan for networks
I did man only at&t shows up

Yeah, that just sounds like you're having crappy T-mo coverage. You could try flashing a different modem.
I just did I get bars but its still in emergency call only
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Even though you have bars, doesn't guarantee that you are on the T-Mobile network. You can also get bars on other networks if T-Mobile isn't available. This has happened to me before when I drove off in the mountains, and only AT&T was available (I'm on T-Mobile), and I got 4 bars, but it still said "Emergency Calls Only" because I was on the wrong operator.
the problem with my device I never get more than 3 bars

Hey. Yani. Did you solve your problem?
Because I have same issue as you have.
I heard from one of my friend that upgrading gingerbread to ICS might work, so I did that as well. but still the same.
And just to let people know, I am not in the crappy tmboile coverage area. In my other phone, I get five full bar reception with same tmobile sim card.
Any ideas?????
Different phones have different radios, get different amounts of service.
Unless your 'other' phone is another i777, theres nothing to compare.
does it really matter how good of service you get when you only get edge?
APN settings
Did you input the APN settings for T-Mobile? I unlocked mine and run it on Straight-Talk and I had to manually input the APN setting to get it to make and receive calls. Just speaking from my personal experience I would choose Straight-Talk over T-Mobile. You still get the same service as AT&T but its only $45 a month for unlimited everything including data. Just check your APN settings man. Make sure your T-Mobile one is selected if you've already input everything.

Yeah. I tried that and getting a little bit better service. I will try it on Monday because at work see if it is better.
If it doesn't, I guess I have to sell this phone, since I tried almost everything I could.
Thanks for letting me know about Straight-Talk, but I have to stay on T-Mobile. I had a deal with T-Mobile for $100 unlimited txt and data for 4 lines. So I can't switch over for 2 yrs....
anyway, thnx for the advice and will update on Monday night.

Hey shpchunjae, did you ever get this figured out? I'm fighting the same problem now (trying to get my i777 to connect to the T-Mobile network) and I'm not getting anything - voice, text, or data. The SIM card works in another T-Mobile phone, so that's not the issue.
Thanks!

[Q] No Service or Mobile Network on any Sim :(

Hey guys I've spent the last few days reading old threads about using the i545 on USA GSM Carriers.
I bought a Bad ESN Verizon Galaxy S4 on eBay. From what Ive been reading these phones come factory unlocked and i figured I would
buy one to use on T-Mobile.
I have tried countless things now and for some reason all I get in the status bar is a circle with a line through it.
I have tried various APN settings found around older threads but still i get no signal.
I rooted and installed the newest hyperdrive and still nothing.
Ive even tried an AT&T sim & an old Orange Sim I have lying around for these testing situations.
They both show a circle with a line through the middle and when I try to make a call it just says "Mobile Network Not Available"
If I remove sim and power on the phone it states there is No Sim Installed.
I am running Hyperdrive RLS15 with 4.3 MK2
I've heard that if a phone is blacklisted it cannot be used in the USA on any carrier is that true? and if so why are some users stating they bought a bad esn phone and works fine on GSM US Carriers? I am really confused decided to make an account and maybe get some more insight.
Thank You guys!
Any XDAers have any suggestions?
Anything would be appreciated, Thank you guys again
I apologize for the self bumpage, I dont now what else to do.
This is my final bump, Should I just resell on ebay?
How can you even use this phone can it be flashed to any service or used anywhere?
tried at&t and t-mobile sims with apn settings to no avail just a circle with a line through it on the status bar.
Thanks
Peace

Is it SOL internationally as well? Wondering if i can state that if I try to resell it on ebay.
Since im honestly dubious this thing works anywhere, is there a global IMEI database?

Sorry but you will have a hard time getting any help with a bad IMEID phone.
That's a stolen or insurance fraud device. Parts only.
