[Q] 3.0.8 Kernel & battery life - Motorola Droid RAZR

Anyone noticed that the new ICS kernel is taking up A LOT of battery life? Even on standby it's draining a lot.
Any way to fix that? Or i'll just have to live with a really crappy battery life?

welcome to the ics battery crap. You'll lose many hours of your life trying to figure this one out... essentially, there are two basic directives:
1. clean install (FR, cache, dalvik wipe)
2. wait for a few days for the calibration to happen.
there's a bunch of other suggestions as well... Oh and your screen might also run extremely hot sometimes!
Enjoy

A lot of us are getting hit by it. Sometimes the cache wipe and factory reset stuff works and sometimes it doesnt. Motorola has some new ICS builds coming down the pipe. Latest one is .215 and people who have flashed to it have seen dramatic battery improvements (back to how it was with GB).
So hang tight, help is on the way.

[Q] % of total battery usage - display is way to high

Hi guys sorry for this thread new here so please go easy on me. Had a galaxy s2 for a few weeks now and i have to say best phone ever. Did the normal rooting and flashing roms and i have noticed recently that my battery has been going down quite a lot after a few hours. I tried roms like Villainrom, Cognition, Batista and etc which i find them very good but on my battery stats it says that i have high display usage and the percentage is like 56 - 85 and sometimes goes and stays to 91. i have since then when back to 2.3.3 stock firmware rooted it as well and i only have display percentage of only 25% which i think is normal and my battery lasts longer. I have spoken to Samsung regarding this situation and they are sending me a new battery but im just wondering why i cant flash a custom rom without having to worry about the high display % and what can i do to fix it? do i have to give it a few days for the battery to settle on the rom or shall i just stay with the stock rom for now till i get my new battery and then try to flash? sorry for the long essay i just need to find out if any one else had the same problem as i really like to use a custom rom that my normal one.
THanks
I too find it very hard on the battery with all the custom roms that I have tried out. I tried, Villain, Cogniton, LeoMar, Batista, etc..etc..etc. I have in fact tried out all the ROMs out here. Tried even different combinations of Kernel, but all only lead to the frustration when it comes to battery life. I finally tried MIUI ROM and I can say that it is giving me very good battery life compared to other ROMs.
It is interesting to note from you that the STOCK ROM has given you better battery life. Could you please tell me how long did your battery last in Stock ROM and what are the Apps that were running in it?
Install Better Battery Stats, I don't think anything wrong with the battery.
See under Wakelocks what apps/processes are going in background and causing the drain. Then take necessary steps with TB Pro.

to xdadeveloporian: thanks for your reply bk and sorry to hear that you had the same issues. like i said above i am very new to all this so apologies if i am replying with noobish comments. with wifi on and the normal widgets i had a battery life over a day. only charged it once and it still going. is that rom that you using now good?
and to ithappy sorry what do you mean by your reply i do not understand sorry. and do you guys think with a new battery it will fix my problems and i will be able to flash roms or do i have a faulty phone?
% is not important, what really matters is total time on for the display. Are you sure it isn't that the stock ROM burns more power in other areas, so the display is less? Or maybe the brightness is different? I'm not even sure how the display proportion of battery drain is apportioned - is there really a current sense integrator?
now that i have the stock rom with firmware 2.3.3 display is 30% followed by android os 15 - 19% which i think is normal into regards were i was on customs roms and the os was 15% and display 50% and over. brightness is basically at the lowest i can put it i am using touchwiz launcher and i only have two pages with widgets and nothing else. just a bit confusing thats all. i mean with custom roms the battery should be alot better not the other way round if you get me.
apologies if im not making any sense here. thanks again for all your replies it does help

I don't believe that stuff, why battery life would be better in a Custom ROM, because they added/modified some stuffs, nah. You can make a Stock ROM custom with some little modifications if you are rooted and have great apps like Root Explorer, Titanium Backup etc. I, for me, will never ever use a Custom ROM. But that's just me, don't take it any personally.
And about battery, don't see that how long are you getting with it, like- 1 day, 2 days, they don't make any sense, just keep an eye on the 'Screen On' time, if that is around or above 5 hours then you are very fine. And also keep checking that your Awake and Screen On bar is synchronized or not, if it is not then you must have something going on background, like- Latitude, Email exchange etc. which you can see under Better Battery Stats. And also, when not needed turn off, 3G, Packet Data, WiFi, Auto Sync, Background Sync and check how many apps are on Auto Sync, if not needed then modify it to Manual Sync.
Regards.

Maybe they fixed some bugs - specifically a custom kernel might have improvements or bug fixes (since there is lots of work going on here from many companies making contributions). This takes time to filter through to the official ROMs.
Maybe they removed some of the stock apps which contribute (maybe only slightly) to power drain.
Maybe the small differences in the ROM mean that existing bugs are less likely to have an impact, so even not fixing the bug it seems to have gone away.
Custom ROMs are as likely to make things worse - but if many people are affected then it is likely that someone will track down the reason.
Look all i know is that as soon as i started flashing custom roms on my phone my battery life has been going down like hell. Checking battery stats the most thing that is taking up battery life is the display being as high as 80 even 90 percent. I am not a expert on android having had an iphone all my life so when people say underclocking and other stuff its like new things to me so i do apologise for being such a noob. i do love my galaxy and i think its the best phone out there at the moment. all i need to know is if there is something that i can do to bring the display down and not to have it drain so much out of the battery..
Thanks again for everyone for replying
very niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
huh? has anyone else experience high display usage on their phones when checking battery stats?
is that from the android market i can get that app?

Which ROM has the best battery life

I'm using Seraphim and I'm happy with the battery life. It seems to be worse than the GB ROM but I can get about 2% down every hour when the phone is idle.
I am thinking of trying different ROMs and battery life is very important to me. Which ROM will give the phone a better battery life based on your experience?
Thanks.

ah ok, im in search of a good ics battery friendly rom as well, actually downloading dag's ics "hybrid" rt now. i'll give it a go for the next couple days and post back. i was seeing about the same as you for seraphim.
In my experience, unless there's a bug, a ROM has little effect on battery life. Android is going to use a certain amount of power to run itself, and there is little that a dev can cook into a ROM to change this. Beyond the system, battery usage is from the screen, apps, and radios. If you are in an area with poor reception, and have lots of apps and widgets that frequently update in the background, this will decrease battery life.
I've used both DaGr8's Alpha II and Seraphim, and my battery drains less than 1% per hour when idling.
Guys a Search would have told you that Battery life is 99% on the user and has almost nothing to do with the rom. We could be running the exact same rom and get very different battery lifes due to the apps we use and how we have the device set up.
In the end there is not best rom. Only what works best for you.

[Q] Reasonable expectation of battery life?

I have been struggling with trying to figure out if the battery life I am seeing is what my Atrix is really capable of. I am occasionally a heavy user, but on weekends I am a very light user. I'll start at 8am with 100% and be almost dead at 6-8pm. I have searched around and seen other Atrix users with 24 hours of battery life and even if I tried my hardest to not use my phone I wouldn't get those kind of numbers. I feel fairly confident in saying i scoured search results and tried everything i could find to extend battery life.
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there something I can do to help?
I know it's been asked before, but I am hoping to get some current answers for this question: what kind of battery life numbers are you getting on your Atrix? Which rom are you using?
Atrix 4G running CM7 RC3. If the answer is "keep it charged as often as possible", it is what it is. It would be great to find an answer to why battery life is so much shorter than others though! Many thanks in advance.
Just noticed CM7.2 stable was released, upgrading to that now to see if battery life improves. Might try a full wipe to see if battery life is better without email, syncs, etc. etc. if the upgrade doesn't help.
i would recommend getting cpu spy and also download and install as a zip 'blue sleep fix' (blue sleep zip can be found in the CM7 thread). This has greatly improved my battery life.

Which kernel? Flash Faux 1.0GHz and undervolt across the board by -50mv. Instant battery life!
Also, use ROM Manager or equivalent to stop all non essential apps from starting on boot.

You should turn wifi off when not in use, that will save battery life.
Badass battery will let you know how you spend your battery by % and let you know which app takes the most battery. (Lets you get a really readable easily understandable battery read out.)
I can help you get even better battery if you use this app and give me some numbers (it has a share via gmail/etc)

turning off wifi is not going to help him that much. I leave my wifi on all the time no problems, make 2 days light usage no problem.
More likely he's got some apps running around in the background. I suggest he pick through what he's got installed and start turning off the things that like to sync all the time in the background.
I think step number 1 would be to install a non-stock ROM and startover fresh.
Blur-based ROMs (Nottachtrix was really good) then the faux123 kernel then slowly start installing the apps he likes to use and monitor battery life. It might take a month but he's definitely got an offender here or there causing these problems.
also install Juice Defender. My mom's Galaxy S2 was having tons of problems with battery life even though she wasn't using it at all, 60% battery life at 3pm without using it at all, installed that and immediately helped her a lot, like 80% by 3pm WITH use.
Also, clear your dalvik cache. After installing lots of stuff and not using it, it just fills up with sometimes poorly written code. Clearing it always makes phone faster in my experience.

I think this is what I will do today! I'll do a nandroid backup, and try Nottachtrix with no extra stuff installed or setup. I will report back! I appreciate all the help to get my phone performing where it should be.
Just wanted to report in. I tried a clean ROM as stated in my previous post with no luck. I just couldn't get past the battery life I was getting with cyanogenmod WITH all of the apps and syncs enabled. Should I try another ROM maybe?
Maybe your battery is just a bit old? After ~2 years, you can expect that battery life drops dramatically. if you are a heavy user this might happen earlier. Maybe check with the battery of a friend of yours whether it's a software or a hardware issue
Nvmd
You could be right, the battery might be dying.
I was on vacation the past few days so I got the opportunity to not use my phone most of the day (job requires me to use the phone a lot). The battery lasted about 12 hours and looked like it had about 4 hours left. So maybe I am expecting too much, but I'm not trolling...no.
If you aren't going to be helpful, go somewhere else. You could have said "Your phone screen was on for probably longer periods than the average user and that's why you can't hit longer hours". Based on your previous comments, I shouldn't expect much from you though.
Many thanks to all who are helping me. You're all awesome.

[Q] Massive battery drain after jb 4.1.2 update

Hello
I updated my Galaxy S2 via Odin(PC) from Stock 4.0.4 to Stock 4.1.2. All went fine, phone works smooth and fast. But there was a massive battery drain. Therefore i wiped data/cache, did a factory reset, everything is new an fresh. Phone still works smooth and fast but battery drain doesn't change. Take a look at the screenshot. Is there something i can check and change?
Thanx in advance.

Thanx for your reply. But i cannot confirm that. Never had such a behavior. Flashed a few ICS 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 Roms and either thery're draining or not unless i'm able to change or fix somthing. It never improves on its own. Maybe it's my bad luck only.

Yes, you are right. But i read a lot about battery drain problem in the dev thread and also tried a few, ok not all, things to fix it. Yes i will.
But, generally, flashing different Roms causes different issues. Reading solutions based on different ROMs, Custom ROMs, etc. isn't very helpful. There may be general solutions for this damn battery draining problem. But until now nothing fits to me.
In the end i hope to find a solution or i will go back to ics.

Your absolutly right, i read many problems, but with those stats are weird.
1) Just try to re-flash the ROM and after go to recovery and clear everything(dalvik, data etc).
2) Use the option to reboot.
3) Turn off phone -> remove the battery -> Try to turn the phone ON without battery one or 2 times -> wait 2-5minutes more without doing nothing -> Battery back in.
4) Charge up to 100% (when the icon appears).
5) Wait for 1-3 cycles and check if its ok.
6) If you have media draining check my signature link.
Issue solved, probably
I probably solved my battery drain issue while doing what CrisR82 suggested in his post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37227296&postcount=10017
" Battery drain is caused by a permanent wake-lock (I had that issue).
For everyone with that problem, here's what I did and got rid of it:
1 - fully drain your battery (0%, to the point where it won't power-on at all)
2 - recharge your battery without turning on the phone
3 - go to recovery mode and wipe both data and cache
NOTE: backup all your contacts, messages, whatever...this will delete everything!
(I formatted my USB storage aswell before step 1, but I think that's not necessary)
No wake-lock for me, 17 hours use, 12% battery down (only checking the clock every once in a while)."
As it seems it worked for me also. Did it yesterday evening and keep in mind i did a factory reset therefore i had to reinstall everything. Battery is behaving normally again.
Maybe this helps the one or the other.
Greetings
Nicolas
Now, right solution
Ok, my mistake!
At first it seems that there is an improvment in battery life like i said in the above post. There is ... but slightly. Not enough, not acceptable at all.
To make it short.
I did a clean install. That's it. Wiped everthing, pumped the battery up to 100% and flashed Samsung Stock jb 4.1.2 again. And it works now.
Thanks all for your advice.

Thought I should share that I tried the same and face the same issue. Before JB, on completely stock 4.0.4 (no root), I would charge after three full days (72 hrs). Moderate/normal use - no heavy gaming. Under JB it drained in less than 24 hrs with very moderate use - mostly idle. Back on ICS i now get the same battery time as before.
I should add that my phone came new with ICS 4.0.4 installed. Two friends of mine have upgraded theirs all the way from GB -> ICS -> JB and they exeperience significant battery improvement. Being a noob, I don't understand whether this makes any difference. Simply coincidence?
All the best.

New ROMs are always smoother than previous ones, once you flash em you get in cant-put-it-down mode. You need at least 1 week to judge battery life on any ROM. A couple of days to set it up and a few days to see how it behaves.
Once you get things going you never go back, that's a fact.
Be careful on 4.0.4.

Battery drains in cm11 + galaxy-s2 - tried all tips

I installed cm11 on my s2 a while ago using the installer and since then im trying to figure out the reason for the huge battery drain. Cm works great but it drains the battery in an average rate of 19% per hour (a special app did the math, and i can clearly see for myself ). I dont do anything more than music, surfing and whatsapp. Android stats usually say the screen is the no1 battery drainer. Android os second.
I searched the internet and tried every possible tip there was. IMO the only thing I hadn't tried is flashing different modem and different kernel (didn't find good guides for it and was afraid to brick the device)
What I have tried:
1. Flashed neatrom just to compare. A little improvement but still not like old days and of its not a good performance like cm.
2. Went back to cm through recovery backup and Used battery stats, taking permissions away from every app with a redundant wake/cpu lock.
3. Got new battery, assuming the problem may have to do with an old battery (bought the device 2yrs ago)
4. Calibrated battery both with the app and also using the manual trick (chrage while phone off, take batter out, wait five mins and put back in).
5. Tried different governors.
Might be forgetting other things. Nothing works!
What can I do? I really wanna use cm and not get lost flashing less good roms.
Thanks
This device uses an old Exynos SoC optimized for Android 4.1, In new versions is normal battery performance loss because there is more consumption of resources
It also warms up and all.... You recommend flashing older version of cm?

Yes, only if you really need more battery life. I have a Galaxy S Advance, who died in the 4.1, Battery life in 4.4(CM) is 30% lower than the official 4.1.
