"Elastic scrolling" / delayed touch input? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

UPDATE
I tried the CM10 preview #5 and theres no delay or "elastic scrolling" at all.
Seems to be something samsung added as a "feature" in the stock rom.
Heres a video of scrolling in CM10
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey,
I already found this thread but no real answer or solution.
I noticed a lag between the physical touch points and the positions the apps are getting. Some people referred to that as "elastic scrolling" but it seems to be present everywhere.
Heres a little video that shows the touch position from the android developer options and from a multitouch test app.
As you can see the positions the app gets is indeed "elastic" and seems to be delayed just like scrolling.
Another one that shows the scroll delay (even in lists with just a few elements).
I find it quite annoying compared to the direct input on the HOX or even compared to my old phone running CM7 (a Motorola Defy).
Is there any way to get rid of that behaviour? Oh and since I did not try one yet: is the input/scrolling in custom roms delayed too?
The S3 should have enough computing power for direct scrolling ..

I see this elastic scrolling more of a feature.

Me too, this looks more like a feature to me. Can anyone try AOSP-based ROMs and see if the result is the same? Especially on CM10.

Updated the OP with a video showing scrolling in CM10. Apparently theres no input lag or "elastic scrolling" compared to the stock roms.
Why the hell did samsung add this loose input?

this "elastic scrolling" thing annoys me like hell....
I just bought a quadcore CPU phone, and now my phone likes some WindowsMobile6.0 thing?
Come on Samsung, ever tried scrolling on an Iphone?
Please come up with a better solution...

You do realize CM10 is based on "Jelly Bean" and not "Icecream Sandwich" as the current Samsung ROM's are?
ICS has elastic scrolling...

I hate samsung's web browser. Any way to replace it with the AOSP or CM7 one ?

I guess It's all in the title : After 10 days of using the browser I can clearly say that I don't like it (checkered effect, pixelated zoom, cant double tap to zoom, text doesn't reflow...), and even though I tried other browsers (Opera, FF, Dolphin...) my favorite is still the stock browser from Gingerbread or the slightly modified one from Cyanogenmod.
Is there any way I can replace the samsung one with one of those ?
Thanx.
You can double tap to zoom, which also simultaneously reflows the text. But yeah about everything else you're right...the checkerboard effect is annoying :/ As of yet, there's no way to replace the Samsung browser with either the CM one or the standard Gingerbread one, sorry to disappoint...
Double tapping never really worked for me : it zooms but only by like 5% so it's pretty useless. Is there a setting somewhere ?
Thanx for the answer anyway
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
are you tripping the browser is incredible..
Nothing else is as smooth, i regret buying dolphin HD.
The samsung browser smashes everythign I compare it too including the iphone 4 so I'm not sure how you can be unhappy.

The stock browser is really good and definitely out does othe rbrowsers I've used. I find dolphin to be a bit troublesome and it is aesthetically unpleasent also.
I've found the browser to be fantastic. It's the only Android phone to have smooth scrolling like the iPhone. Why has it taken so long? :/
if you switch to a different browser it wont be as smooth because it wont be hardware accelerated. the samsung stock is optimized with the GPU it seems.
that said, i played with the Infuse and it too seems hardware accelerated, showed the checkered background, yet it reflowed text just like its supposed to. double tap reflowed text. and pinch to zoom reflowed text.
why would samsung implement on one device but not the other?

Maybe it's a bug on SGS2 that'll get fixed by a firmware update. Samsung needs to be aware of this bug though.

although i do have opera 11 aswell as it has slightly easier navigation.. for quicker browsing
I would trade the smoothness of stock browser for AOSP browser in a heartbeat.
Smoothness: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
Full screen : stock (0%) AOSP (100%)
text reflow : stock (10%) AOSP (100%)
text selection: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
window switch: stock (50%) AOSP (100%)
The window switching ui is just fancy but not practical at all. It require so many swipes and clicks to select/close windows.

Wow I didn't realize samsungs custom browser was not likes this much. Is it really that bad? Makes me enjoy my stock browser much more.

Quick settings pull down? - not on SGS2

Hello.
Just ported myself from Desire HD running LeeDroid to SGS2, and I am happy, except one thing...
Why is the pull down menu not present in the SGS2 roms? It is pretty normal in Desire HD roms.
The menu consists of last used apps, and a quick shortcut to settings, wifi, data and more of the settings presently presented in SGS2 drop down... Thought it was a standard feature on Android Gingerbread...
Anyone found a way - har tried to search but have found no answer so far.
That was a feature of the ROM. I had a HD2 before the SGS2 and had no end of different ROMs, some of them being DHD ROMs, so I know what you're talking about. The most recently used apps can be accessed by holding the home button (great for switching between running apps), but quick settings are not there. It's a trade-off with the toggles that are there in the SGS2.
Other than trying different ROMs I can't suggest anything, as I've never seen a Market app that does anything to the notification/pull-down screen.
Hate to say it, but maybe you just need to get used to it being different?
Maybe you are right - or maybe the DEVS at SGS2 have not yet seen ported this part...I hope.
actually there is a toggle tool on market with more feature than standard on SGS2, but I can not remember its name, though I will search for it and post it here if any luck.
I would really like to have advanced pull down notification menu for my SGS2
Maybe this is something for you

There are quite apps in the market that allow you to quickly access different settings: screen settings, sound settings, data settings, etc. just by pulling down the notification bar
Yes I agree but nothing as smart as the ones I am talking about I guess, because I don't have running/ last used apps on SGS2. Instead I have a toggle. So I believe it is a step backwards compared to other devices in this specific matter.

Yeah, guess it's not the same as Desire HD. Maybe there's an app on market that does that too, but there are so many that it's like looking for a needle in the haystack. I tried about 10 apps until i decided to keep the one that i found most useful for me.
You are missing HTC Sence features... If you want your most recent apps, hold down the home button. If you want controls, use the market. Sence is great, I know, but basically the same stuff is here just packaged different. You just need to get used to it... I did.

You can access recently used apps from holding the home button.
Thanks guys, already new about home button but glad you took your time.
I actually stripped sense from every custom ROM but that was the leftover.... Didn't know...
Well hope that someone makes an app to tweak that pull down as I find it pretty useless as it is right now with the sense version in mind.
But I just have to live with it. Everything else it a lot better on the SGS2 so I am still very happy... Rest in peace HTC.
For what it's worth I prefer being able to Toggle settings via the pull-down. I hated the Desire HD for putting apps there, I quite liked the Sense 3.0 ROMs that had the Recent Apps (even though I never used them) but also had a tab at the bottom of the pull-down for settings.

[Q]Flattened Sense Scrolling.

Currently running Fresh and I would like to implement flattened 2D scrolling for sense, however I am a bit confused on how to do so. Would someone mind pointing me in the correct direction?
Also, is there a way to implement RCtweak on a rom without having to bake it in?
I'm assuming you mean to make the scrolling more like stock Android. I'm not sure there is a way to, since it would involve pretty heavy modification of the framework.
No thats not what I am referring too. If you look at the widgets on the home screen as you are scrolling you will see layers to the widgets. This while it looks nice cause a hit to FPS, which can be translated as perceived lag. Flattened scrolling removes layers of the widgets.

Youre talking about the 3d effect when moving from one screen to another. Unfortunately I've not seen that done yet. If you are rooted I recommend using Eternity rom 1.3.1. That rom seems to have taken care of the lag issue you are experiencing. It's what I use and you dont really need to overclock like i did unless you want everthing else smoother. See a video of my phone below.

I wanna say mike1986 was talking about taking this feature from sensation and using it on shooter in his next release of ARHD.

There was a 3D 3.0 Rom that had RCtweaks in it which allowed you to switch this option.

[Q] Joelz ICS ROM Questions

I'd like to start off by saying these are just things I have noticed and am wondering if they are being worked on or if there is nothing to do about it. I'm not trying to complain but I cannot post in the Dev forum yet so I'm posting here trying to figure out the answers.
1. Is there any way to take advantage of more screen? there is a good 1/4 inch of space at the top and bottom of the screen that you cannot use. The only reason I can think of that there would be so much space is because of the remove button on the top when you drag widgets.
2. Google Talk does not work for me by any means. If I try and log in it says I'm offline and when I click on my user name it says that it had a problem and force closes. Anyone else experiencing this?
3. How hard would it be to add virtual looping to the home screens? that is by far my favorite feature of Launcher Pro along with transition animations.
4. When will the dock and icons preferences be fixed?
5. What is the issue with the camera? Is it just the 3D? or is it because the EVO is supporting 3D the drivers are weird to handle?
I'll probably have more questions so I'll update later. I have searched the Joelz ICS thread for these answers and didn't come up with anything. I hope someone could help me with at least most of these questions. I understand programming but I'm not an android developer so keep that in mind. Thanks in advanced

1. I don't get what you're saying by that. In the launcher preferences you can disable the persistent Google search widget so that will open up a tiny bit of space but let's be honest... it doesn't make that much of a difference.
2. Google Talk doesn't work. I'm pretty sure Joel just added it in with further plans for it.
3. The launcher being used is CM's CM9 launcher, Trebuchet, and they have stated that it's in their plans to add in endless scrolling.
4. Again, this is up to CM for when they finish up the first release of the launcher since it's v0.1 alpha right now. Couple of releases off of being added in, and god knows how long til it's 100% functional. CM is generally quick.
5. It'll be just like the long haul that was getting camera to work on 2.3.x when that was the newest that we had. The camera has extremely odd drivers and it is much easier to fix/re-write for a single camera than two, of which 3D is it's purpose... I think we will have to wait on CM to fix up the camera drivers for ICS before we see any real progress in that department. I'd say camera is a long way off. :l
Hope that helps you to some degree!

That did help a lot thanks. For the first question yeah you can disable the persistent search bar but it doesn't seem like you gain that space back. Its just empty space then. Can't even resize widgets to go all the way to the top. I would say I lose almost an inch of screen space which is significant to me at least. I like my clock widget to be at the very top but on my phone it looks like its in the middle.
for question 5. So your saying even non 3D will be a while for the ICS ROMs?
Thank you for your help I really appreciate it
You can try another launcher. Go launcher works pretty good with Joelz ics rom.
And yeah, you don't get any space back when removing the search bar. That's there for the buttonless phones.

Yeah I feel like running a different launcher kind of takes away from ICS. I am hoping to keep it as my default launcher. but if no development is made I'll probably go to Launcher Pro

[Q] Any idea if the following annoyances of SII are fixed in SIII

There are a few things (software) that really annoy me in the SII, anyone knows if they have been addressed in the SIII:
No text reflow in stock browser
click on location in calendar widget does not go to google map
cannot scroll to next month, etc in calendar widget
Picture taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen
All software, all easily fixable if they bother...

the issues with text reflow arent an SGS issue, its an apk issue. the default browser just blows.. why are you using it anyway? Dolphin or Opera are the way to go man. and Opera Mobile has flawless text reflow
sorry the calender app is sucking for you, this one IS samsungs fault, maybe theyll fix it on the SIII, but you could always try a new calender app from the market.
pictures taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen, [email protected] yes this is fixed, its called "ZERO SHUTTER LAG" and it makes me veryyyy happy. what you see on screen when you snap a picture is exactly what youll see when you take a picture.
HOWEVERRRR, if you want a fix for your S2 right now, i got one. download Fast Burst camera app from the market, it can take like 20 pictures a second, and what you see IS what you get. rapidly snap the shutter button, or hold it down for a DSLR machine gun sounding shutter attack haha, this is the camera you wanna use to catch fast shots, like your dog jumping, or someone flipping a coin. things beast

Yeah, but what annoys me is that HTC phones have a great stock browser *with text reflow* and the calendar is brilliant.
Surely Samsung should address this usability issues before getting on the flashy gestures functionalities...
Also remember that Dolphin recorded and sent to the mothership the list of web sites you visited. They allegedly "corrected" that. But after such a security blunder I will never use their products again...

The text reflow in stock browser was a setting you can change. If you go to your settings, there should be a "Auto-fit pages" that's unchecked by default (at least for Samsung ROMs). I think by default, it's checked for other phones/ROMs.
I haven't flashed my SGSII with the Samsung stock ICS ROM, so I can't speak to that... but it's there for all of the Gingerbread Samsung ROMs I had. (I'm currently on CM9).
I can flash back to a Samsung ICS ROM to verify.
UPDATE: I'm on the stock SGS2 ICS TW ROM, and verified: In the browser, hit the menu button, Settings, Advanced, Auto-fit pages. That will control if the text reflows or not.
Now the thing that irks me on SGSII (again with Gingerbread Samsung ROMs) is there's no touch-to-focus while taking a video. The HTC One X/S, iPhone, and Moto Razr has this feature, so not sure why Samsung left it out. I hope they put it in the SGS3 TW ROM.
It irks me that it's not in the Google stock ICS builds (CM9, built from source, GNex, etc). This is, of course, a problem stemmed from Google's own source code. All those nice features (pano, snapshot while videoing, but no touch-focus while videoing).
The video autofocus is not reliable.

That option switches on text reflow only when you double tap to zoom. There is still no text reflow on pinch-to-zoom.
It's quite annoying when browsing forums and in general sites with lots of text content
I'll try Quick ICS, it sounds promising.
The thing is, I wanna get a SIII but I have to admit that between Sensation and SII the user experience for me was better on the sensation, it just felt tighter. It's the small things... I'll have a play as soon as it hits the shops!
