So long and thanks for all the fish - Motorola Photon 4G

So between Motorola's crappy support of this device and sprints lousy data speeds, after reading this article I've decided to jump ship and go to t-mobile prepaid with a galaxy nexus. For $30 a month the price difference would more than cover the $300 ETF within 6 months, and selling my Photon will likely cover half the cost of the galaxy nexus.
So thanks to all the developers who have made the most of this great phone.

Cool deal

The idea is to use a VOIP app and use your google voice number with Wi-fi to make those other 100 minutes viable. You can also still use additional minutes for .10 cents a minute after you use your 100 minutes as well.
Overall unless you're a big talker with no stable Wi-fi, this plan could work for most people.
I'm using it on the Photon, no 3G speeds, but I'm around Wi-fi most of the time anyway.

Verizon upped data for same price

I had the 5gb data plan for $50 a month. I just logged into my account and hit change plan because i was thinking about getting more data, and they are offering double data. Now i get 10gb and dont have to pay any extra. Pretty surprised on that one.
Wonder if that works for Hotspots too. Will have to check as I have a 4G Hotspot on a 5GB plan right now that I use for a bunch of non-3G devices.
Updated: Answer is no.
You guys could get unlimited data and unlimited hotspot if you did this.

That's good news, I pulled 5 GB last month basically streaming music in the car and with normal usage and that's with being on wifi all day at work because my building is a signal black hole. I don't know how they expect people not to go over these tiers they have, I can only imagine they are getting a lot of complaints from people going over and getting billed for it.

I think sooner or latter the ones of us that have truly unlimited data will be able to sell the plans. I have 2 lines with unlimited data. Any takers lol

Check out my data speeds.

Yes, they suck. Unfortunately this is what I have 98% of the time where I live. 2G.

Wow, I don't even see that in the next city where there is 4G speeds. I may see 10mbps there. 2G is pretty worthless and t mobile can't see why I won't upgrade my data to a bigger package. I have the unlimited $10 with 200 mb at 4G , which I rarely see.

Wifi would be your best friend in times like this, reminds me of my x10 on tmo, I dealt with it but eventually it had to go.

I would kill myself with those speeds lol, I average about 18-20 mbps, lowest I've seen my device go is 8mbps
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
Ouch... I get good speeds aside from my ping. After the ICS update my ping went up into the mid-upper 100's and 200's from double digit ping times on GB.
T-Mo's 2G may be meh, but it's still better than AT&T's 2G network, or at least that's how it seemed when I had them.
Only smartphone I know handles tmo 3G well and doesn't seem slow on it is BlackBerry's.
T mobile reps are saying we will have 4g here by 2013. If not, in may when contract is up probably jump to the dreaded Verizon. They have 4G here.

Bye, Bye Note :(

Sadly today I got rid of my beloved Note. before my trial period expired I made the decision to cut ties with it. not because it was a bad phone but because of 2 issues. 1) the high price of AT&T phone service and the lack of unlimited data plan. I came from sprint 13 days ago and could not stand looking at my data usage and my first bill scare me. so I returned back to Sprint with my new S3. Love the service on AT&T. I think is the best so far. but not at a cost AT&T want it. so,,, good bye Note!!! :crying::crying:. one more thing,,,,, THANK YOU ALL AT THE NOTE FORUM FOR YOUR SUPPORT AT ROOTING,UNROOTING AND ROM FLASHING YOU ARE THE BEST AT THIS COMMUNITY XDA-DEVELOPERS ROCK!!!!!!
understandable...hate to see you leave but it is pricey. I, too, pay about 45 dollars more a month for att but I couldnt stand sprints service in my area. the trade off for me is worth it for now. plus, i love my note. it IS the main reason I came to att. be cool man. youll be missed...
Me too men. The Note was the reason I switch to AT&T. But I'll be watching for the Note2!!!!

I was told in NYC they are turning all the old payphones into wifi hotspots. I was wondering if there is any truth to that or if that already happened? If that is the case you would never need to have a data plan.
Certainly understand. I spent years w/Sprint (not always enjoyable) BUT switched to AT&T when I got the iPhone3g when it came out.

The transaction is expected to close in mid-2013, subject to a meeting of Sprint shareholders, and the usual FCC and antitrust approval, as well as SoftBank's ability to secure financing. In the event that it can't raise the necessary cash or if Sprint gets a better offer, the Japanese carrier will have to cough up $600 million in termination fees. Likewise, Sprint will have to pay $75 million if its shareholders don't approve the transaction.
