Hello,
a couple of days ago my Samsung galaxy s2(I9100G variant) was stolen from me.I made a police report and I will wait for 2 months, maybe I can get it back but if I couldn't,I will just get a new phone of course.Thinking about getting the s3 but there are 2 things that are making me a bit hesitated:
1-I'm not sure whether samsung will provide the new android version(key lime pie ?) that comes after jelly bean or not...And I'm not willing to use any AOSP ROMs till samsung stops their official updates because I like the new touchwiz features.
2-I'm not sure if the s3 will gain cyanogenmod(the base of most AOSP ROMs) support or not after samsung stop their updates for the s3...and codeworkx says that exynos is hard to develop on.
Keeping in mind that I'm from the type of users who keep their phone for a long time(I might keep it for up to 4 years)...Some might suggest getting a gnex but I don't like it because of the poor camera(compared to s2/s3) and lack of sd card slot.
I am sure nobody knows the answer to whether SIII will be updated to keylime pie(?), but I think it would as I have heard reports of SII in the list of devices to be updated to JB
If SII can get JB I am sure SIII will see KLP(?)
CM10 is already out for SIII even before samsung has released/leaked anything JB for it. COuld be the same for KLP
Just wait next nexus. 5 company will make phone for google.

Afaik Samsung has claimed the s2 not to be powerful enough for Jb.
Cyaaogenmod of course proved them wrong by releasing preview-builds of Cm10 for the S2 and it's predecessor S1.
I guess the same will happen with KLP.
At least I don't see anything that would need more power than the s2 got

I wouldn't wait the 2 months. The chances are really high that you'll never see your phone again. Police reports do very little in finding stolen electronics. This is at least from my experience.

Source? That sounds rather unlikely being as that JB doesn't have any more hardware requirements comparing to ICS.
im very certain s3 will get JB.
and CM9 / CM10 aokp all are already developed for S3.

If you're going to stick with stock for a while, then be aware that you'll only have 11Gb of space to store apps, regardless of what size SD card you purchase in insert into it: http://www.chainfire.eu/articles/113/Is_Google_blocking_apps_writing_to_SD_cards_/
if you want a new android handset right now, there really is nothing more future proof than the GS3, if you can wait until fall then you can look at what the rumored nexus devices are packing.
the GS3 will most likely get the 5.0 update in the fall, but as to when it might actually get it, you're probably looking at Q2 of 2013 at the earliest.
ok so it seems that there's a very high chance that the s3 will get key lime pie because samsung is already testing JB for S2 users(2nd major update for the s2).Codeworkx was able to release cm10 before samsung releases official JB for S3,tho it's not so stable but it's not even in nightly releases yet.I hope things go the same with android versions after KLP.

I just got my S3 today. It is bigger then I actually would like. Also, I do not like TouchWiz (and the VZW mods/bloatware) on the phone. Even using Nova Launcher, I still get stuck with some odd interface issues due to TouchWiz.
For hardware, though, it runs very, very well. However, I am stuck -- I would like to but JB on it but with no perm root yet for the phone (just the kexec work around). So I am curious, since the BL is locked (not eta yet of getting it unlocked) should I go towards the Gnex (similar size phone) or the smaller Inc4g (which is unlockable -- worried about support though unlike my OG DINC). I prefer the Inc4g however the build quality is an issue on the phone. In my 20mins of playing with it at VZW (day it came out), seems to run very well with Android 4.0 and Sense 4. I don't mind Sense as much as TouchWiz either.
So I am at an impass: do I wait to see what happens with the S3? Do I jump ship to the GNex or Inc4g?
I do wish VZW would not have been stupid about the S3!

I would honestly wait it out. It's a matter of time before enough people get together and win over a BL unlock update from Sammy. If you want a GN enough I would trade you, but to be fair the s3 is a strong phone and should get the unlock soon.

Hello all! I recently (yesterday) just upgraded from my Captivate to this fine machine. After a full days work of rooting and flashing cm10, yes, this took about 6 hours after getting stuck in a boot loop, I finally have jellybean on my note. My question is, does anyone know if any progress is being made to get to 4.2.1? I thought it a little strange that my captivate is running the newest version of jb, although I know it isn't official, but that the note isn't. the new apps really are great! Maybe I missed it in the development section where there is a 4.2 ROM but if anyone could give me info I would appreciate it!

Welcome to the note world, I switched from the captivate too, your gonna love it. No 4.2 out for our phone yet but I'm sure the developers are working hard.

Thanks! I have been searching through the forums and it looks like it could be a little while before this is a 4.2 released but at least the Gapps seem to be coming along! I really love this phone so far, it even came with the hyperion 5000mah ext. battery, which I have read is not truly 5000mah, however I have been using the phone pretty heavily for about 10 hours now and it is still at 70% battery so I am very pleased. I just dont know what to do with my cappy now!
To my knowledge we lost a few devs to the note2, but I know of at least one dev that is working on it right now. Also rumor is that the canadian devices will be getting there official upgrade to jelly bean in Jan, so fingers crossed thats stays true for us, most likely won't be 4.2 though, but still official JB would be great for making the JB roms more stable.
Well I'm reading up on different phones and I was almost sold on the LG Nexus 4 until I read further into the no LTE issue and then it clicked that while it can come with 16 gigs of memory, it's internal and therefore if the phone dies violently...or just gets lost, I lost a lot of important pics should i not back up to my comp enough. Which I don't honestly.
So I'm reading up on this phone and it has everything I need except one hitch, it doesn't come stock with Jellybean. LGs site says it come with 4.0 ICS. So I'm wondering if it does get the OS update and if so to what version. That will honestly be the deal breaker on whether I commit to buying this device in the near future.
I know i could just read through this whole forum..but really I just want a simple answer with my making my head explode with all the extra info..cause my ADD hide will sit here and read everything out of boredom. And I'm just not in the mood tonight. Please and thank you!

Well, while there's not an "official" JB update yet, there are a few unofficial ones that are working quite well, as well as CM/AOSP in the making. You can also just convert it to a nexus (basically) if you'd like, so I'd say go for it personally. However I'll probably get flamed for even answering you because you should really search since there are probably about a million threads just like this. Just food for thought...
NEVER buy a phone for what it MIGHT do in the future...
The Optimus G will probably get JB in the future - but there is a slight chance it won't. And who knows when, could be months.
If you don't mind rooting and tinkering, there are a few ports that mostly (but not completely or perfectly) run JB now.
If that works for you, then there you go.
Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
If you need or really want JB, and don't feel like rooting, wait a few months for the next crop of super phones. By the time this gets official JB support, the next batch will already be here with faster processors, etc. However, if you do like to mod and root and tinker, as was mentioned, there are some developers working on AOSP and CM10.1. Hopefully that will be out by the end of this month, but we don't ask for or get ETA's around here...etiquette, and stuff.
Once that door opens, I would imagine the ROM's and custom development will take-off.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
I guess I should have worded my question differently. I should have said, has it gotten the update, rather than does it get it. But from the way it sounds, it has not. I like rooting and tinkering. But I really just want a stock JB phone to work with and tinker from there. I appreciate the answers though. Thanks.
Snow released a fully functional JB port based on stock for a different LGOG (not sure which one) which works phenomenally. Though I'm more for ICS instead of JB, I'm giving it a shot. The performance is outrageous.

Where is that at?
Do all features that are at least in the OEM firmware work properly?
(I have to have a phone that works, out of beta, without bugs and crashes and spending days on workarounds. I tried AOSP on my Samsung Galacxy SII Skyrocket and it was nothing but problems. Camera crashing, editing configs.... it was a beta at best and unreliable. I don't think I want a custom ROM ever again if that is the experience with it, but I do love JB)

Everything's working fine on my end too. The only other problem i've heard is of some people not having their 32g or 64g external card show up while others have. I just flashed it last night, granted it's still early to know for sure without testing a few more days but I'm really enjoying it and things are flawless right now.

Samsung will never tell us that development for our loved SII is dead, but what do you expect ?
We got Android 4.0.x and 4.1.2, thats already fantastic for a 2 year old phone, soon 3 years...

We can only hope and see. It would be amazing to see if samsung really does it, cause its been 2 years and the phone is still getting updates!
I'd love to see the S2 get the update......but I doubt it will happen.........
As another poster said.......the model is nearly 3 years old now....it's also 2 generations out of date (S3 &S4)......I'm sure the phone is capable of running the update, but I'm also sure that Samsung isn't going to continually update an older phone and deprive themselves of income generated by purchases of newer phones. The S2 has been updated more times than any other phone (cmiiw).....but now (I read somewhere) that they've ceased production of the phone, it wouldn't surprise me if they ceased support for it too........
Sent from my Alliance powered S2 via XDA Developers App
So I presume that means you'd like all the Knox crap/locked down bootloader then ?
No.....if that happens my next phone aint gonna be a Samsung......and from what I've read about knox, it shouldn't affect the S2 anyway as the S2 doesn't have the knox efuse built in to it.......
Sent from my Alliance powered S2 via XDA Developers App
The thing I don't understand is why people keep believing those rumours. First 'they' said 4.2.2 would be the final update, then 'they' told us Samsung would skip that version and would jump to 4.3, and now both of these things didn't came out, and suddenly 4.4 would come to our device?
Like said before, the step from GB to JB was already quite big, so don't expect anything more from Samsung.
I don't understand why people get hard whenever a new firmware drops. Let's face it, Samsung's firmwares are complete/utter crap. What people should be getting barred up about is when sources drop. Sources allow developers to make better roms. Samsung releasing new firmware minus sources = so what ?

Why still GB? There are official Samsung Updates for your S2. The latest one being 4.1.2. So go for it bro!
actually I don't mind if Samsung released 4.4 for this phone, even if they didn't we will always have custom roms .In my opinion, Samsung is a great company it has supported this phone for a long period of time.I think that this phone is better than some phones being released this year and I wouldn't like to get another phone( I dont think its time to upgrade )
My S3 died when plugging a USB stick via an OTG cable. See here for the issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981582
I'm past the year warranty, and no upgrade until October. This backup TBolt is killing me, so I need to buy a used phone, either an S3 or an S4. I had a couple questions about the S4:
SAFESTRAP QUESTIONS
- I'm guessing that Safestrap chainloads another partition using code written into the primary system partition?
- I'm unclear as to the ROM limitations. Is it just the kernel that has to be stock, or does the ROM have to be essentially TW? Can the ROM be debloated?
- Is it as fast as running the stock partition? (I know it's on EMMC)
- How does multiboot work? Does one have to go into Safestrap Recovery, choose a partition, and reboot? Or is it more like a desktop OS, where there's a chooser at boot time?
- Does the decreased RAM significantly impact app space? Is it imperative to find a 32gb model?
- Can one use the same data/sdcard partitions with multiple 'ROM'-slots, or even the stock partition?
HARDWARE QUESTIONS
- Are the overheating issues serious, or just overblown?
- Have there been problems with the USB port? (I don't want to fry another phone)
- I'm guessing it's hard to find an MDK phone at a reasonable price?
- Anyone remember the videogame "MDK"?
SUMMARY
I mainly use the phone for PIM apps, web browsing, GMaps, and podcasts/music. I prefer a debloated ROM for speed, but don't mind a stock base. I don't nead CM/AOSP, etc. For reference, I run CleanROM on the S3. I use a 64gb SD card for data, so don't need much internal memory.
It seems the only advantage of the S4 to me is the better display. The S3 is plenty fast for me. OTOH, the S4 would also future-proof me. The S5 doesn't sound like much of an upgrade from the S4, and will problably be locked down even more.
Any advice?
No overheating with the s4, I should know. I mean I have 4 of em in my house that my sisters use. Their perfect because when you root them you can get sick android and not all your tells garbage from whatever your carrier is. Bottom line is get and s4 used of eBay then upgrade the s3 you has ace to an s5 when it comes out, if it comes, when... The s5 might just be a rumor. But yes

Wow, didn't know there was an MDK S4 for that cheap. Can one assume that's MDK since it has CM on it?
However, S3s are dropping to $150 since people are getting S5s.

Ooh. Thank you for helping me learn more about technology
I tell people that I'd trade my MDK S4 for an S3 all the time. I just felt like I got better performance out of it all around. CM11 definitely ran better and was more stable on the S3, even in Alpha stages, than even the most current CM11 build for the S4.
Just my opinion though.
And yes I remember the old MDK Sega Genesis game. I loved that game.

So, are you saying the ROMS for the S4 aren't mature yet? As I said above, I run CleanROM. Rock stable but still quick because of the debloat. If S4 ROMS don't provide a stable environment, I may want to stick with an S3.
BTW, the S4 for $235 @ Swappa has been dropped about a foot and has a crack in the glass near the button (not over the screen). It also only comes with a Zerolemon extended battery/case which is twice as thick as a stock S4. One would have to buy a stock backplate and standard sized battery. I'm guessing it's been through multiple owners.
Think it's worth it?

I'd be more inclined to say the ROMs I use aren't. AOSP ROMs specifically. I'm sure many people are just fine with TW ROMs and are perfectly okay with the SafeStrap method. I'm not one of those people and as a result have had stability issues. I'm currently running the final release of CM 10.2.1 because it's much more fully matured, but I still have issues with data dropping from time to time and other general instability. I never had issues like this with my S3, iirc, even on CM 11.

I would pass on just about all of them except those running MDK.
Having KNOX, is a pain in the butt.
I personally would not buy the S4. I have one but would not buy another.
I'd go for something that I could unlock the bootloader.
Right now the LG G2 is as cheap as the GS4 with hardware close to the HTC M8 or Galaxy S5.
If you need an internal SD that won't work. My next phone is not Samsung. Just say no to "KNOX Pox".

Not sure what your doing but my S4 blows my S3 out of the water. Try a Rom like Liquidsmooth or Vanir !

Would you care to rephrase that? I'm not sure how you S4 is better than your S4.
Honestly if you wanna mod, roms all that, your best bet Is either a nexus or HTC, as you can unlock HTC bootloader. Or pay full price for unlocked version of s4 :/

Need microSD. That rules out the G2, HTC One, Nexus 5 (off VZW). S4 is the only viable phone in that generation. M8/S5 too expensive.
Most people here harping on the need for mdk are ALMOST wrong, lol. The OP says he only wants stock based roms. That is totally an option with safestrap. Currently your needs sound like they would totally be met with a locked Verizon phone. However, who knows what future updates will "fix"... so there would be a chance that safestap couldnt be made to work on a new update... at which point you would have to choose between updates and roms...

scryan is prescient.
I'm leaning towards an S4 for 2 reasons:
- 1080 screen.
- It would be a shame to have to pay for a new phone, just to get the same old thing. Granted, the S4 is >$100 more . . .
It looks like the TW ROMs have enough customization to keep me happy. It's a shame that Scott stopped developing CleanROM, as that's rock stable on the S3. Hyperdrive sounds like a good candidate to start. Not worried about updates killing SS. I'm sure the devs will find a way around it.
Just waiting to see if the S5 release drives S4 prices downward any further.
MDK S4.
One thing you may not have seen first-hand is just how huge a difference AWS makes.
