So, I side-loaded the stock apps for the Desk Clock and such, and I find I really like the big screen and the desk clock with the weather display. This issues isn't specific to v1.4.3 as I had it with .2 as well but not as often. Of course, the Desk Clock gets its weather information from the News & Weather app...
I know there are no location services on the Nook Tablet, so I uncheck the box in the app settings for determining location and try to set a custom location. When I do this, it says that whatever location can't be found. I put in my Zip Code, says it cannot be found. Put in my city name, says it cannot be found. I even tried major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, and nothing can be found.
I read online and a lot of places say that you need to set location services on, agree to some terms of service, then you can set your custom location, but of course the Nook Tablet has no such services.
I have gotten it to work before, but clearing the data doesn't work, there is no cache on the app to clear. I even tried booting into CWM and clearing the Dalvik (that spelled right?) cache and repairing permissions. To no effect.
Anyone else having a similar issue? I know there are probably other desk-clock style apps out there, but I honestly like the stock apps when they work. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know if using GPS counts as "billable" data usage?
I ask because I'm driving to Canada next week and would like to make use of Google's Nav (for at least a bit of the trip). I realize Maps likely needs internet connectivity to function correctly, so may plan consists of:
Being connected to the web (either Mobile Data or WiFi) here in Jersey
Searching for the hotel's address and allowing Maps to "download" the route
Leave GPS on, but turn off Mobile Data
Do this seem terribly stupid? Assuming it would work, would the "connection" to the GPS show up on my VZW bill?
maps does need the internet to work properly. the gps data does not count as data. there are several options including paid apps such as copilot that have maps stored on your phone. there is also a modified version of google maps that will download map data to the cache which should allow you to do what you were suggesting (set route and then follow). i have not used either personally. however, a thread for the modified google apps is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887&page=245 with the newest version as the last post on this page. you can read the thread to see what all it can and cant do. it started out as modified by brut then was picked up by a different developer, but using the same thread.
All I can tell you is that Nav Does work when driving through areas of No Signal. You have the blue line through a blank (white) background. I don't know if you lose the verbal cues or not. No signal areas I encounter are not in areas I need to turn, but just following a highway.
From my experience with Nav I think your plan is at least a valid experiment. If it does not work, on the way back just Get Directions and follow the written instructions.
Your GPS is on the phone. There is no charge to use it. My only caveat is if it requests Assistance data - that may cause data charges. It should only need assistance data to help acquire lock. Once you are navigating it should be fine without a data connection.
Please post how it goes.
ok since you are the second person i have recommended the app i posted the thread link to, i figured i should probably install it. you have to uninstall you current map app. the new app has two things to do. in the settings menu of the app, there is a more button. in the more button there is a sign in to account option, this will sync it with your google account (starred places and such). the other part directly applicable to you is under the more button, there is a cache settings option, if you click that, then check the prefetch on mobile box, it should prefetch all of the maps when you program your route. one piece of advice is to toggle off your network and make sure the "international roaming" option in your phone settings is turned off once you leave the country. when i went to jamaica i was greeted by a text when the plane landed. a friend wishing me happy travels cost me 50 cents...lol. that will teach me to leave international roaming turned on. the nice thing was that where we were staying had wifi so i still got my email and voicemail/texts through google voice.
Thanks to you both.

Interesting thread, I'll have to read through that when I get the time (lunch time at work tomorrow is looking good heh). Thanks for the link.

My main concern is getting charged for usage outside of the country, but it sounds like that won't happen. I'm probably going to "steal" my wife's Garmin for the trip, but will also try this experiment with the Eris just out of curiosity. Will post results when I return.

You went above and beyond on that one for me brother, much appreciated! Sounds like you've found me a solution, and a new piece of software to play with. The wife will be watching more of that horrible Jersey Shore in my absence (if I'm so much in the room my blood pressure goes up about 50 points), so double thanks to you!

Just tried out the latest version 5.2.1 and it didn't seem to voice search well. I will probably try out v5.0. i know that in brut it worked. brut stopped updating his version at v4.6 i believe.
edit: the brut options (cache maps etc) do not work in gingerbread.
program on the market called Locus allows downloading maps of a selected area also if the brut/google maps doesn't work and you are still looking for a free option.
I'm looking for a simple, stable, free weather app.
All I want is the current temperature and a forecast for the next 36 hours or so.
It doesn't need to run all the time, but will preferably update fairly quickly when started. Nothing fancy needed. I found one that looked promising and would have been fine except that it was convinced I'm in Idaho when I'm in North Carolina.
Any suggestions?

honestly weather app in Clock works for me
Am using weather info provided in clock just have it on my desktop and click first thing in the morning to get the feel for the upcoming day. As long as you have location and background running updates over wifi very quick over 3g not to bad.
Weather apps don't know where I am.
I don't understand why Maps and Navigation apps have no trouble figuring out my location but every weather app I try is incapable of figuring it out.
I tried News & Weather, which comes with the phone, I tried a handful of different ones from the marketplace. They either tell me they can't establish a location or they freeze while trying to.
Any ideas?
Ensure the following
I have the follow enabled on my phone and weather app inside clock works like a charm:
Wireless & networks:
Wifi and 3G
Location and Security:
Use wireless networks
Use GPS networks
Use assisted GPS
Accounts & Synch:
Background data
Honestly has not failed my yet, very simple weather app and already part of the phone.
I made my settings the same. The only thing that wasn't is that I normally have "Assisted GPS" disabled. I still cannot get weather to work.
Froyo 2.2 official release. I just rooted it today, but this has been going on for a few days now, so that has nothing to do with the problem.
Anybody have any more ideas?
Ok I use clock so try this
Click on clock click on weather even if location is wrong click on settings and set my location. If that does not work set your location manually. hopefully that works.
That worked, but I would like to know what is wrong with the locator.
Don't think you have a problem
Sometimes the Cell Tower sends erroneous info and your phone goes nuts. So you have to tell it where you are.
i use weatherbug and i also use fancy widget its great!
So I'm finally posting here to check in on this one....I've had weather widget location issues from day one on this phone. I've read that it seems to be an HTC thing...however I don't see that many in this forum complain about it really. I'm starting to wonder if maybe my phone is just exceptionally bad with this and I should try a new one.
So that said, how's everyone's widgets? I can't get a consistently accurate location with the HTC one or Fancy/BW. Sometimes they work, other times(like now) they put me in another state. All other location services seem to work and give my proper location.
I guess I'm just concerned because it seems to happen across the board, regardless of which widget. Any input is appreciated.
So long as I have data, my weather has been fine from the get-go. I don't know if it matters, but I have Google location services enabled, and Verizon and Standalone GPS disabled. (I'm not convinced that HTC is using Google location services, so that may not matter.)
Now, in HTC's weather widget, you can set up additional cities (I have current--which updates to wherever I am--plus a couple of other locations). Are you sure you're looking at the 'current' city and not a fixed location?

Yep definitely set to current city. I'm wondering now more so if I just have a bad GPS. Strange thing is I never once had the GPS lock issue that a lot of people have had, so I just chalked this up to a buggy HTC thing. But since it's happening across the board now to all widgets, has me wondering.
Ok guys here we have it. Under location settings on my s3, all 4 options are checked, on Facebook under messages ie the inbox, I can see my location is available for my receipient to see, I check in a place, for example if im at the cinema, however when I go to update/share status. It will show my Location for example London in the bottom right corner however once ive composed the status and posted it to say where it be everyone or friends, it shows the shared status on my profile and feed but the attached location. Ive tried killing it fb from the task manager by both swipping to the left and end all/remove all, ive forced stopped it from the application manager under settings and cleared cache/date, ive uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I've under ClockWorkMod wiped user data n cache n all that crap, whatever i've seemed to do hasnt worked. I have an International i9300 Galaxy S3 with stock rom that is rooted. Im considering a reflash but I doubt that will sort it, nor will a factory reset from the phones settings under Ice Cream. Help me, im really frustrated, its weird twitter publishes my location fine but facebook dont, it was working fine up until friday when I upgraded to the new fb, even when ive wiped user date n it installs the apps again it doesnt seem to solve it. Its weird the new fb is meant to make the location awareness easier it says. Jelly Bean is out Wednesday hopefully this can be resolved.
Might want to go to the appropriate forum.

I reflashed the phone with the stock Rom for my network, then through the phones settings back up and reset, I wiped the phone to factory settings. Root went and all the apps reinstalled, by refusing to update to the new Facebook the location services now add the current location to status updates, whereas as the new Facebook doesn't.

Im having the same problem since i updated my s3 to android 4.1.2. Any solution?
First off, I have to say thank you for this killer app, one of the best Android apps, in the history of Android itself In one click I have a theme in a few seconds, that if I did manually would take me a full frigging day to figure out, amazing.
Question though, on every theme I try it has some different weather location, no my location. I have my location permanent set in my weather app to a fixed zip code.

The problem with this is that the current weather provider we're using is terrible, and it's very difficult to change. We are working hard on switching though, and once it's done there should be no more weather issues :fingers-crossed:
need some help with that too
Yeah, I don't think you can yet. However, it works great for me.
Does it have anything to do with Location Services? The first theme I loaded up showed "location n/a" and I figured it was because I had Location Services turned off. I turned it on and it updated accordingly but now it's kind of hit or miss.
