Hi!
My father has a Samsung Galaxy S2 with the stock GB, and un-rooted. The phone has been working flawlessly, but lately (since about 2-3 days ago) it begun to using a crazy amount of data.
My father normally uses about 300 mb per month, but now the phone is using about 20-30 mb per hour IN STANDBY.
Also he notices that the battery is lasting about half of the previous time which is consistent with a long running process...
He doesn’t install/update anything lately and the settings are set for low data use. Like no auto sync, he also has all the known data eating apps disabled.
He has installed an app call “my data monitor” and the app says that all the data is being used by OS services but there isn't a detailed information.
Just for clarification, he doesn’t have too much applications installed. Just: Whatsapp, Viber, Facebook and Twiter, but as I say before, he has all the auto sync off, and all this apps where installed Months ago.
My question is: there is a program that can help us to find what is going on? Something like a “on the fly” data analysis?
Any other idea what can be happening?
Thanks!
Edgar
First off, turn off data connection. Settings-wireless and networks-mobile network-uncheck "use packet data".
And then go to Accounts and sync in settings and disable all Google account syncing.

Sounds like a virus to me. Download a virus scanner from the play store. And if you have wifi, I would turn on airplane mode then turn on wifi so he's not using his plans data

I already installed Avast, it coming clean. Maybe I will try another AV.
This happened to me too! Tried figuring out what the issue was, but no avail! Data connection continuously ON and the battery draining like crazy. Had to re-flash stock GB and the problem vanished. :victory:

Well, I have my device running for 2days already with no reboot.
I charged it at night and have it running for 5 hours.
I did make 1:30 hours phone calls, a few internet and so, but its awake for the whole 5 hours which doesnt makes any sense..
The only reason I noticed it was how I lost 48% in 5hours.
I have almost nothing running in background, stock task manager shows only messages, gmail & Android market.
the "running" tab in Go launcher shows 250mb free out of 838mb total..
now after reboot its fine again, it goes to deep sleep (i checked with cpu spy)
but the problem is, how do i tell what was the cause for this mess?
BetterBatteryStats showed me that the phone was awake 100.0% of the time..
Check "partial wake locks" in the better battery stats app. Will give you info on what app or process time awake.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Well, in this menu there's nothing suspicious, the highest one takes 2-3mins with not too high count,
and the rest are for less than that & with low count as well.
So what else can I do to check it out?
If its not deep sleeping, what frequency is it stuck on when screen is off?
Is any data connection on, gps etc
There is also an app, "watchdog lite", may help alert you if there are amy rogue apps or processes (depending on config)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite
What is your current system setup and config?
Have you made any system changes or installation of apps or themes since it was working fine?
If still no good our out of ideas, Maybe reflash the kernel and no setcpu profiles, UC, OC etc. .......
or at worst full wipe and reflash the lot.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I will try Watchdog.
I have everything the same as before, nothing changed much.
The only serious thing I did in the past week was freezing 1-2 things with TB.
There was nothing running in the background such as download or similar
The freq. used on screen off was 200MHz
What was frozen, and how about unfreeze and test?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It seems like it doesn't use deep sleep again. I didn't di anything serious since the last reboot.
The only things I froze are kies, system update...but I returned them back.
One thing I noticed but not sure if it was like that before or not, is that in the battery info, I have battery idle, operation time is as time from last charge and time without signal is 100%.
Also, when I look at the graph, awake and screen on are synchronized so im getting lost here.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
My device is at 100% awake according to betterbatterystats but in watchdog I don't see anything suspicious.
What cab I do?
I removed most of the things I installed lately but it continues

As I said before;
Is any data connection on, gps etc ?
Also, do you have a strong signal, so its not constantly looking for a network or bouncing between 2g / 3g etc.
Put thephone into Flight Mode, so this eliminates connection to your network, wifi,.gps, etc.
If still no good our out of ideas, Maybe reflash the kernel and no setcpu profiles, UC, OC etc. .......
or at worst full wipe (factory data reset,.cache, dalvik etc in CWM and reflash the lot immediately after.
Don't forget to the md5 checksum to ensure your DLs are not corrupted and matching that of the Dev's original.

One member here found social hub was the cause of not deep sleeping. More than likely a config problem.
One of my suggestions was to put into flight mode and test.
Also you can use Droid Wall to block unwanted network connections.

Well, unfortunately I dont know whats the cause so I dont know how I can configure droid wall.
After 6 hours in night, I had the device for 15 mins awake with no explenation. Partial wakelocks shows the highest activity is *sync* with 1m18s, count:6. The highest count is like...200~, not too critical.
The device was in deep sleep for 6hours but 200mhz for 17mins, which is the time I have no explenation for. In bettery mode you can see that 15~ mins where its awake but screen off.
I have no explenation for this but also dont know what caused it.
The good thing is that I lost only 2% over night, so I cant be too worried about it..
So I still don't know what caused it to be 100% awake.
meanwhile, I have no OC, OV/UV, no setcpu settings at all.
Im on Cognition 1.51 & Speedmod T40. I dont have the Samsung Apps installed at all.
Much better

At the moment, yes
however, the issue wasnt found & solved yet, so I need to keep looking for it.
dunno what else to do, sadly..
Full wipe and reflash does not take a great deal of time, a lot less than troubleshooting in most cases.
Just backup your user apps and data with titanium before hand, and md5 checksum match.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
But if I backup all user apps and data, how will it help me ? Isn't one of them the cause for that ?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Just in case. It may be rom our kernel
You always have the option to download fresh from market and just restore the data.
Edit: If it happens again;
Personally, I'd backup, full wipe, flash. Reboot after first boot, and before / after applying themes and after restoring.

My Account Sync setting seems to like to turn itself off randomly. Is this happening to anyone else??
Some days Ill get my Gmail and Facebook notifications just fine, but sometimes Ill notice I haven't gotten anything all day, go into Settings, and sure enough the Sync option is unchecked once again!
Im on the stock 2.3.4 OS that came with my GS2, all Ive done was root it, nothing else. I don't have any sort of settings on that disable my data or anything that Im aware of, all Ive got is the Power Saving option which turns off my GPS when the battery drops below 30% but this shouldn't affect syncing my Google and Facebook accounts should it??
Last time I updated Gmail in the Market last month, I noticed a lot of comments that this was happening to all sorts of folks so I assumed it was a bug in the latest version. It was just by random chance I happened to go into the Account settings to look at something and noticed it was turning itself off..
Check to see if you have power save turned on. It will turn things off to save battery.
Settings, power save mode.

I have the same issue, but the question is; when the phone gets charged isn't auto sync suppose to turn back on? Mine stays off (t989 for me)
Mine was the same so I just turned it off altogether.

Hello all,
I have a amaze for a while now that I recently (about 2 months ago) installed 3g watch dog to monitor the data I use thru out the month.
I noticed that over the last 19 days that the "phone" with sub catagories of phone, dialer storage, SIM toolkit program used about 115 mb of data.
Over the last hour has used about 470kb and have not even used the phone at all.
While right now I have a 5gb plan (that I have gone over a few times with) and is not a problem now if I go to a 200 mb plan to save money that would be over half the months useage.
Currently I am completely stock with the phone not rooted or even unlocked bootloader or anything.
Does anyone know why that app is using so much data or what may be causeing it?
Any help or insite would be greatly appreciated.
I noticed a handful of people have looked at this with no response, so just wanted to say you're not alone but I have no idea why. Any insight would be great.
I was wondering if using Facebook that's built into the phone/contacts app might be something?

It requires root, the OP isn't rooted.
Looking into this a little more I went so far as turning off background, auto sync, location services, all syncs of contacts and accounts, update polling for the phone OS.
And has jumped over 2 mb in a hour with no phone use.
Not sure if there is anything else that could cause that.
Really the only thing that I have seen that stops it is turning off data on the phone completely.

The data toggle is a must have.
I've trained myself to tap it before the phone goes down, or I don't require the net.
Eliminates a long list of "issues".
now this may be a dumb question since i don't consider myself new to android, i've changed three android tablets so far, rooted my phone, installed and tweaked dozen of roms on it, so i know some relativelly average things about android, but this one puzzles me:
on both my tablet and phone i have facebook and gmail applications. they are basically the same .apks since i have a backup of them on a sd card and if i format one device, i often use restire the apps from the sd card.
and you know how you get an instant notification on your phone if you receive a fb message or an e-mail? that doesn't happen on my tablet. it seems that a couple of minutes after i turn off the display on my tablet, it drops the wifi connection (a power save thing i suppose).
is there any way to ensure a constant wifi connection on my tablet so that i receive email/fb notifications in real time and just not after i turn the display on?
this may be only an unchecked box in my network settings, but i really haven't noticed it
thanks for your help on advance

Go to Settings > Wireless & network settings > Press Menu > Advanced, and change Wi-Fi sleep policy to Never (or Never when plugged in, to avoid drain your battery)
thank you! i'll try to keep it turned on constantly, and see what the battery drain will be
Sent from my PMP5570C using Tapatalk HD
noup... i gave up after a few days... the battery drain is too big... even when it's pluged in, the charging process takes a lot since i'm almost constantly using it, in such a case, it almost doesn't charge

Have u tried using tasker?
U can use that app to like turn on Wi-Fi every half hour for a minute or so to check for notifications, and then turn off.
All automated
no, but that's an excellent idea! thank you for the suggestion! will install it and give it a try
Sent from my PMP5570C using Tapatalk HD
hey... i need help with tasker... i seem to have programmed it to connect to wifi every 30 minutes, to check facebook, gmail and tapatalk, and the profile is on, according to on/off switch in tasker itself. but when i check notification icon, it says "no active" profiles.
also, i would like to write you how my profile looks like, but i don't know how i realize that tasker is a powerful app, with a lot of options, but they seem so complicated when trying to adjust them. :/
Sent from my PMP5570C using Tapatalk HD
Hmm...first try installing tasker as a system app and see if that fixes it. Also check accessibility settings as it may be listed there.
If the above doesn't work then it may be a problem with your profile.

well the problem with your first solution is that my tablet isn't roited so i can't install tasker in system/app, the other is that it might be a problem with my profile, but i realy don't know how to set it up... i mean, i tried, and i think it's good, but it doesn't have to be good. that's why i needed help in the first place

Hi I got my phone a week ago, a Galaxy S4 i9505 with Vodafone Italy. I had a nexus 4 before this and I never had problems, now the phone consumed almost all my data in just a few days. I attached the screenshots since I cannot post the links.
For now I selected the option "Restrict background data" and I will check in the next few days, but it seems that it will disable it on wifi too. I don't care how much data it uses on wifi, I want to have Dropbox automatic uploads and Android backup, so it's fine that Android OS consumes a lot on wifi, I just need it to stop on 3G since I almost capped the month in a week.
Any ideas?

That's quite a lot for a data usage, in my opinion. I Think that there is an option in (at least) any app with sync that limits the data usage whit mobile connection. Try it and let's see what happen
Disable "backup data" under backup and reset in settings. That did it for me.

The only thing I can think of is using Droidwall to restrict Android OS to Wi-Fi only.

I tried updating the firmware to the latest version today, now I will see if maybe this solves the problem. By the way, is there any way to analyze better the usage of Android OS? It involves several different processes, maybe with a better firewall/data monitor we could find out what exactly is using up the data. I am now at 800 MB of usage just from Android OS in less than a month. The phone is rooted (I had the same problem before rooting) so I can put apps that require root.
Galaxy S4 Android OS High Data Usage
I also have a GS4 and in August I used 1.54GB of data This is absolutely unreal, I don't have 3G enabled all the time either, I only switch it on as needed. I have done some investigation over the last few days to find the culprit as it is all reported as "Android OS". I disabled all accounts sync, still using more than 100MB a day. I restricted background processes, no difference. I limited updates to WiFi only. I disabled email automated refreshes. I in fact didn't touch my phone at all for an entire day, still more than 100MB a day usage. The one thing I hadn't done yet was disable the automated backups. I have just re-enabled everything and only have the backups disabled. So far I have only used 1MB of data, it has been about 8 hours. I think the automated "Backup to Google Servers" is the culprit. In any event why does it have to do a huge backup every day, even if I havn't used the phone? Why doesn't this feature have an option to limit the backup to WiFi only (here is a a request for the developers)? Why does the Data Usage under "Android OS" not allow a more granular breakdown of services, if it showed "Backups" I would easily have know what the culprit was?
So let's hope I have now stopped this high data usage as it was costing me a fortune every month

ofcourse. The galaxy s4 consumes everything, just like the s3. Your also having trouble with battery life too right? Its what comes with the galaxy line, give a little and it takes all. That huge awesome display of it's.

UPDATE 3 Sep 2013: The high Data Usage has been resolved, it was the "Back up my data" under "Backup and reset"
mine does that too but it ain't a backup thingy

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.
Hope this helps, Press THANKS if it did help you
Enjoy
I disabled auto Google backups and I still get huge data drain from google os.
It started after march 22. Up to this point it was 900kb per month, last month it was 1.7GB
I am running latest Android (Nexus 6p). Any ideas?
