If you plan on rooting your phone. DO NOT UPDATE It will change your hboot of the phone. HTC did this to the evo 3d and screwed up the phone. If you want the updates without the changed hboot. Root your phone and the devs have made a flashable zip that has all the good updates and no hboot change.
No do not ota. Download this:
http://d-h.st/elt
Rename it to PJ75IMG.zip
Place it on sdcard - not in any folders, in the main directory
Reboot into bootloader and say yes to update
Rename or remove it from sd card

Is it okay to install the updates Htc sends being rooted? I have an update for the lockscreen and don't know if I should update it or not.

yea, i think there is a lockscreen/few app update should be fine. although these types of updates have been uncommon on my EVO so not sure if these small and narrowly focused OTA updates will be common or not on the EVO 3D. this is the first update of this type i've seen on the evo/evo3d series. it only patches a few applications and doesn't touch the bootloader/hboot/radio/recovery.
as a general warning, most OTAs from HTC, especially larger in size, have the potential to reset root access on the device and lock the user out. keep in mind when running most OTAs, especially larger ones, you do run the risk of losing root access.
if you want to do some investigating yourself, the OTA files are always downloaded to the /cache partition. download the file, but do not install. after the file has been downloaded, adb pull the downloaded .zip from the /cache partition. you can open this .zip up in 7zip/winrar and maybe also winzip. inside the .zip you can see all the pieces it plans on loading and can determine which parts of the phone will be modified, i.e. hboot, radio, kernel, recovery, apps, etc.
hope that helps!
How come when u rename a backup folder, and tried to recover it.it says "folder empty or no files in folder?. All I did is rename that folder to a more easy to understand name, not the standard date and time.???
Using Cwm 4.0.1.4
EVO 3d hboot 1.5

Because it only knows to look for what it named the backup, not what you changed it to.
so the program that only works that you can specify a backup name is rommanager? I used rommngr before and paid app too .what happened is it upgraded my Cwm 4.0.1.4 to 5...something, that app does not backup just restarts my phone(but ask to create a filename and just restarts lol) and when I tried to use recovery (on hboot and rommgr)it just restarts my phone
I never used rommgr after that incident.and the instruction on new hboot EVO 3d 1.5 is to use Cwm 4014 Manually? Any other options.?

Revised on recovery part.
When i use recovery using hboot it just restarts, when i use ROM mgr there is no back up file, bec. It didn't backup in d 1st place.

If you Open the ROM Manager App there's a Option "Manage and Restore Backups" if you Click that, then Click the Backup you wanna Rename you'll be given the Option to Rename it from there! If you Do Make Sure you Don't Have Spaces Between Words!
Good Luck!
Hi,
I have an EVO 4G, 2.3.3
I rooted it using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
Followed that step by step. Now it seems to me that my phone is not actually rooted.
Some of the apps I'm trying to use that require root are popping up saying "you're phone does not appear to be rooted or does not have root privileges, but on my bootloader screen it says S-OFF.
I used Amon RA, by putting it in the root of the SD card, and used super user..
Also, everytime I go into bootloader it finds the PC36IMG.zip and it asks to update and reboot every single time.
I tried downloading ROM Manager and tried the whole "Click the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" thing, and it says error occured with privileges or some bull...
I need quite a bit of help.
Are u sure superuser is installed? Or correctly? Might be worth uninstalling it then reinstalling.

Whats the best way to do that? Uninstall it through settings > applications? then pull it off my SD card?
Settings>applications>manage applications and uninstall yeah. Also rename the p3.......zip and that will stop it from updating everytime.

I broke the rule and made a thread before researching thoroughly when I thought my bootloader was messed up so I've edited this post....
What does "update gift" mean?
I figured out that it happens when there is a update.zip and a PJ53IMG.zip on the sd card together but but still not sure what it means

That is really strange. Do you have any .zip files (or any other files that might confuse the bootloader) in the root folder of your SD card?
Yeah I had an update.zip from titanium backup after more refining my google search I found that I needed to get rid of the update.zip

Just to confirm: Removing the update.zip from the root folder of your SD card fixed the issue?

Hello,
I have a stock rooted ROM from viper that has all of the bloatware an sprint apps on it. I've tried removing the apks from ES file browser, android terminal emulator, and titanium backup uninstall. They are removed from the app drawer but then reappear (and sometimes update) whenever I reboot the phone.
How do I prevent this and remove them permanently?
Also, on an unrelated note, I'm using the OMJ mod pack and hot reboot doesn't work. It reboots to lock screen and then turns off completely. Has anyone found a fix for that too?

This has to do with not being able to make system changes while S-ON after the JellyBean update.
Urgh, I can't post outside links yet. Google this article to read more:
"Bootloader in Jelly Bean update causes huge headaches for rooted, S-ON HTC EVO 4G LTE owners" at Pocketables
A few options:
You could install MeanBean which has a fix to allow S-ON users to make system changes so that your uninstalls will persist.
Or you could check out App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE, which you can use to freeze apps. I used this before MeanBean had the system changes fix and I didn't have any problems with the changes reverting. Titanium Backup has the option too, but the freeze option is only in the pay version.
Another option that I do personally due to this issue is remove all associated apk and odex files in the zip of the app you don't want in the Rom before transferring it to your sdcard and flashing... Takes a few minutes but ensures the app isn't installed upon bootup...just another option in case its a Rom that doesn't have meanrom's s-on workaround....

This worked perfectly! I deleted the apks while it was still zipped in Winrar and reflashed.
Best option: just get s-off.
Yes it may sound scary, but you will never want to go back to s-on again.
No more flashing kernels before a new Rom, none of that.
Just go to the dirty racun thread and go from there.
