Searched and can't find an answer to this.
Since I have 4g, I have taken to downloading straight to the phone...It's actually faster then my home internet most of the time. But by default, in Chrome and elsewhere, the download folder is on the internal SD card. Then I have to copy it over to the external SD to flash it. Is that necessary? And, if it is, does anyone know how to make the default Downloads folder exist on the external card?
Thanks in advance!
I looked in the past and couldn't find a solution. I don't think there's a way at this time.

You might be able to make a symlink from the internal downloads folder to your SD downloads folder so that Chrome will be redirected to you SD downloads.
I'm not sure how to make a symlink in Android though.
(The /sdcard/ext_sdcard folder is actually a symlink to /sdcard2. You can test it by unmounting your SD card and saving a file to /sdcard/ext_sdcard.)

Something to research, Thanks!
If you're still looking into this I believe this thread may help. It is essentially the same thing just for Google Play Music.

Obviously the locations just need to be changed to your downloads folder and then set to run on boot. Either through init.d or Script Manager.

Today I found that the contents of my SDCARD (internal) was deleted. It doesn't look like the SDCARD was formatted because 1 or 2 files were still left behind.
I don't know if this was what triggered the delete but this is what I did prior to it happening:
In Settings I unmounted the 32 GB micro-sd card. The alert said it was safe to remove the card.
I ejected the card.
I reinserted the card. The G-Tablet did not detect it.
I powered down the G-Tablet and then powered up.
The external card was now detected ad I found that I lost the contents of the internal card.
I am using update 3389 with the Enhancement Pack v1.
This is not good.
Was it just media files? If so, then this is a known issue (with stock, as well as mods like TnT Lite and VEGAn).

The DCIM folder was deleted. I also had a folder named "download" in which I had several PDFs and a subfolder with APK files. The xScope folder (with Cache, downloads and Themes) was deleted along with a few more that I do not remember their names.

I have been searching the forums looking for a fix for this and I haven't been able to find one. Tried to search the forums with an advanced search from Google as well, no lock. This is an old thread, but is there any update to this? Running Vegan 5.11, Pershoot kernal. I had a bunch of pictures and video that were deleted, but the folders/containers they were in were not deleted. Thanks in advance for any help.
add an empty file in root sdcard2 called .nomedia
thanks for that, will give it a try and will let you knwo if it works.

Yes, worked for me. Running Vegan 5.1
When you apply this file everything is supposed to stay and not be deleted right?
I installed VEGAn-TAB 7.0 and had the same problem with media files disappearing (.mp4 video files and .jpg files). Happened when I deleted one file from the internal storage (memory). Next time I came in to the Videos folder on the internal storage everything was gone. Another time happened after I unmounted and removed my external micro SD Card 16gb. Also had the same thing happen with media files disappearing from the external micro SD Card. Very frustrating. Finally put all those elusive media files on my trusty 8gb Transcend Flash Drive and lo and behold, everything worked fine and I could play all those videos, remove the USB drive and when next inserted everything was okay. For whatever reason, the USB flash drive works far better and more safely than the micro SD card. Plugged the USB flash drive into my USB 2.0 4-port hub along with the USB keyboard and USB mouse.
i am seeing conflicting fixes.
some people say to make a file named .nomedia in the root of the sdcard2
other people say to make a folder named .nomedia and put all your files inside.
the 3rd fix i see is to make a .nomedia file in each directory that contains media
which is the correct method.
thank you.

how did you make the file? if you are using windows to create the file over usb, it automatically adds .txt to the end. i suggest making it through a file manager on the tablet.
i have not tried this yet, i will when i get home.

I will try to make it from the tablet and see if that helps.

My problem is apps being deleted and not media.
I hope this thread isn't getting too old. So I am having similar issues with files being deleted periodically after some reboots, the only difference is that the majority of the time they are apps and no longer media.
Specs:
-Running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 stable
-I have created .nomedia file and placed on root of SD (no file extension)
-I use Apps2SD Pro to move apps to sd card
-When I notice that an app no longer appears in my tray after a reboot, i will reinstall from the market and before the install it will tell me that "this will replace an existing version already installed" which leads me to believe that the app is still there just not accessible.
There were a few instances where some of my ebooks and pdf's were being deleted, but that stopped after I placed the .nomedia file on the SD, but dont seem to see any change regarding deleted apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.
Dear All
I can't update the apps that moved on SD card, but has no problem after moving back to phone ? Anyone know the solution ? Thanks
I had the same problem. I was able to resolve the problem by mounting my phone to USB. Then delete the file smdl2tmp1.asec in the /sdcard/.android_secure/ directory.
After deleting the file from the sdcard, I was able to install all apps again
you can do two thgs.
1:delete the file smdl2tmp1.asec in the /sdcard/.android_secure/ directory wt he said if not
2:you may try this, go to setting and choose save to phone instead of sd card. this may allow updates.

i can't find the .android_secure folder. does my phone need to be rooted?
finally!
After reading through a million posts and blogs and pulling out my hair, it was the smdl2tmp1.asec causing all my problems!!! Thanks for the post! Of the hundreds I've read, this is the first reference to the right thing.
any other ideas?
I'm having the same problem. That directory on my phone says it's empty. Yet
, I still can't update apps on the SD card. Any other ideas?
Another path
My .android_secure folder was also empty but other sources said there's another folder to look,
./mnt/secure/asec/
this folder requires root access and using root explorer
I looked around and cannot find the answer to this. I gave my Vibrant to a friend who takes a lot of pictures with it. He has downloaded a few different photo apps and some of them ended up filling the main system storage of the phone with photos. When I looked into it, some of the apps had placed the storage folder under the root directory and not in the Internal Storage or the External SD card. I looked in the apps and they do not have an option to move where the images are stored. The phone is running bionix-v-1.3.1 (just found it to be the most stable for my friend). One of the main apps that is doing this is FxCamera as the storage folder is at: /FxCamera.
So my question is, can I move this folder using symbolic links or another way? I attempted to make a symbolic link but it said I could not create it. I have a feeling I am not mounting correctly or have the wrong symbolic link. (or this just cannot be done). Maybe I should do it via a terminal window but not sure of the commands here as my Linux experience is somewhat limited.
One last note, what I would really like is to get all these photos moved into the DCIM folder on the SD so his Dropbox Upload will automatically upload them.
Thank you for any help!

PART 1: obb "Game Data" to external_sd
Simple script that binds the internal obb folder to an external Gamedata folder on your sd to save space on Internal SD Card.
Use at your own risk.
1. Create a folder on the external_sd called "Gamedata"
2. Move all folders located in sdcard/android/obb to the newly created folder "Gamedata" (This takes a long time using Root Explorer, be patient. I recommend using Solid Explorer so that you can see the progress.)
3. Download the txt file and rename the extension to .sh OR Create a new script using:
Stock ICS:
Code:
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/Gamedata /mnt/sdcard/Android/obb/
SnowJB (may or may not work on other JB ROMS) - Credit:
Code:
mount -o bind /storage/external_SD/Gamedata /storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/
4. Download Smanager from the playstore.
5. Find the script you created and set it to run with SU, make sure to save.
6. You can run it now to see if it worked. (If it did, make sure to edit the script to run at boot)
Notes:
I reclaimed about 6GB+ and was able to download several new games after doing this.
Occasional a folder called /Android/data/ gets created in Gamedata but it stays empty and doesn't effect anything. Just ignore it.
Newly downloaded game data will automatically be downloaded to the Gamedata folder. (As long as the addition data is downloaded through Google Play)
Works with Link2SD
This should work on every device that has an external sd card, however you might have to edit the paths to make sure they match up with how your device has the external sd card implemented (emmc, sdcard1, extSdCard). You may also have to edit the internal sd path for 4.2 and above to because of multi-user support.
Thanks to DeathmonkeyGTX! His music cache script gave me the idea to do the same for obb game data. They could probably be combined into one script, should you want to.
PART 2: Link2SD Info - for even more space saving
You can also use Link2Sd (found on the market) to store apps on the external sd card.
I formatted my external sd into two partitions. One 55 GB partition (For user data) and another 4 GB partition (for Link2SD).
Notes:
The highest app that I linked only saved about 50 MBs. Not really saving that much space, but after I linked several 50 MBs and under apps, I recovered about 1.2 GBs of space on the Internal.
The second partition can only be used for Link2SD.
To Set Up:
Backup your SD, format it to Fat32, use MiniTool to resize the first partition, then create a second partition (FAT 32 and make sure it is Primary) using the remaining space. You should now have two partitions. Now just launch the Link2SD app and create the start-up mount scripts. Reboot, launch the app once more, and finally start linking apps to your external sd card.
More info here: http://www.link2sd.info/home
I recommend reading the description and FAQ.
Both "PARTS" can be used together or separately just fine on ICS. However, I was not able to get Link2Sd working on SnowJB.
Seems to be working great! We now have so much more room for activities!

You have to delete the files before you set the script to run at boot. Otherwise you will be deleting the files on the external sd since the script tricks the system into thinking they are on the internal. I'm also think that your misunderstanding when you say they are on both. If you look at the total space when tapping the obb folder on your internal you will notice it goes from 11GB to whatever size you external sd card is. The two folders are binded so it would appear that they are on both but they are only on your external.

I just noticed this today, I ran this correctly (thank you for adapting it btw) and saw that I had "duplicates" on my internal. Then I saw that the total space was listed as 32 gigs... and it clicked, lol.
For a little clarification, you will see the folder in both places, the one on the internal card is just a link, it shouldn't actually take up any room on the internal card.
I was also able to get this to work for another folder created by a game that didn't put the files in obb folder.
(Just make a copy of the script and edit the pathways in it and run as root at boot.)

Yeah it bugs me big time that some apps download files to different places. I noticed some apps that download additional files through the play store, download the data to the /android/data/ folder instead of /android/obb/. Google really needs to make that uniform, where all additional game data get downloaded to one place. I did, however, adapt my script to link the whole /android/ folder to the external sdcard.
I won't release that one because there is way more things that can go wrong. The /android/data folder is used for so much more than just games and if it's not set up just right you could get force closes and blank widgets on boot. But just FYI, it is possible and is working well for me.
Worked! Thanks a lot for the script man helped save a lot of data!

Hey Joecascio2000,
Do you know how one would modify this script to work on the Stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean LG-E973/1/5/0 CANADA / ATT / INTERNATIONAL rom?
I've read in that thread that the sdcard locations are different for Jellybean.
I've tried the following path to no avail.
mount -o bind /mnt/storage/external_SD/Gamedata /mnt/storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/
Using that path will have smanager error out stating the following:
card0:/AndroidObbSwap.sh'
mount: No such file or directory
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have JB installed yet so I don't know exactly how the sd card and external sd card are mount. I'm assuming your paths are correct. But I suggest making sure that the script is running from the internal SD card. Also, I would add a "sleep" line just to make sure the external sd is mounted properly before running the bind.
Try:
#start
sleep 30
mount -o bind /mnt/storage/external_SD/Gamedata /mnt/storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/
#end

I gave that a shot, and it's still kicking out the same error. I think I'm going to post in that thread and see if anyone there can tell me if my path names are incorrect.
Well Joecascio2000, I figured it out after getting a good nights sleep. My paths weren't correct.
Anyhow, the correct path/command is as follows:
Code:
mount -o bind /storage/external_SD/Gamedata /storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/
Feel free to update your OP to notify anyone who may be using that rom to use the above script for things to work properly.
What would be the code to get this working with the new cm 10.1 conversion?
I tried
mount -o bind /storage/sdcard1/Gamedata /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/
and a few others

Again, not really sure how CM10.1 handles the external sd. Did you try the code directly above your post? It works for the JB port so it may work for the CM10.1 ROM.
EDIT:
Try:

I know they used too on my Captivate but with the multiple users in 10.1 I think they might have changed it. And again it could be different for every device. I recommend using solid explorer to just search around. If you tap the little android icon in the top left it gives you the exact path of the folder you are in.

Did you add the sleep line? Some ROMS take longer to mount the sd card than others. If the sd card isn't mounted before the script runs nothing will happen.
Code:
#start
sleep 30
mount -o bind /storage/external_SD/Gamedata /storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/
#end
This will wait 30 seconds before running the script. If the paths are correct, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Under smanager, click menu>more> advanced>configuration, and turn on "Show On Boot Script Log". That should give you an idea as to what is happening.
Regarding Android Jelly Bean version and my Verizon S4 (sch-i545)...
I know that the native folder location for ringtones, alerts, and notifications is at /system/media/audio
But, where can I create a folder on the sdcard (or ext_sdcard) to add my own ringtones?
I've created and moved mp3's into the following folder structures, rebooted and still don't see them when I try to add new ringtones:
\sdcard\media\audio\ringtones
\sdcard\media\ringtones
\sdcard\ringtones
None of the 3 above folder structures work. Anyone have an idea or do I have to move mp3 files into the /system location?
The stock ringtones are in /system/media/audio/ringtones ... I've been putting my files there but you need root explorer
\mnt\extSdCard\Alarms
\mnt\extSdCard\Notifications
\mnt\extSdCard\Ringtones
Those are 3 folders that work off of the external SD Card. Obviously if you're just looking for a place for a ringtone and don't care about alarms or notifications then just disregard the first 2.
I prefer the external SD Card so that my custom sounds can be carried over between ROM installations without a backup.

So I discovered what you responded above at the same time.
My problem was that I kept looking at the extSdCard as an external SD card. Therefore I was trying everything at the \mnt\sdcard level
When I finally stumbled onto the fact that if I put the files in the respective folders on the folder structure you listed above, then it works.
Again, my confusion is that I thought everthing needed to be placed at the root of scard.
Seems weird to me but I think the S4 looks at the external SD card as "sd card"

I think that TW on the S4 does something funky with what it calls sdcard where it's actually an emulated partition rather than a true file path like on other phones or variations of Android. Whenever you pull up default storage locations of app data and the like, it always shows up as something like: /storage/emulated/0...
For me, extSdCard is definitely my 64GB SD card that I put in myself. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can take it from here. This is my first Android phone from Samsung, and by extension my first experience with TW.
I noticed the same thing (storage/emulated/0/ ) confused the crap out of me at first. I would download files and had no idea where they ended up.

Yeah, I've been trying to research the SDcard vs. ExtSDcard differences. It seems to me like it's different from what I remember. I'd also appreciate any insight anyone has on this. I totally am not (yet) getting the emulated partition. When I go hunt for stuff, I use root explorer to go to \mnt\sdcard and don't start with the emulated partition. There doesn't seem to be much explanation out there so far as I can tell.
