Help with rooting - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

i just rooted my phone with odin, then using a toolkit i flashed the cwm; idk how to check it it actually worked but according to the kit it did, idk if i should see an app called cwm lol. and also now that it is rooted how can i work with the settings to extend my battery life?
btw im on an s3 att

The process is you Odin to get cwm recovery
And using that recovery you flash a zip that gives you root
If you have the super user app you should have root
If you don't do the the sprint dev sec(regardless of carrier)
In the stickes look for the how to root thread
In that thread there will be a video by qbking77 go to the video on YouTube and it will redirect you to a new updated video that works with all carriers

If your device is rooted and flashed with CWM, you have two options:
1) Keep stock rom, debloat using Titanium Backup (freeze unwanted apps), and use CPU Sleeper. CPU Sleeper does an excellent job of preserving battery life when your phone is in standby
2) do some research and install a custom rom which users are reporting to have good battery life
The more you read on the threads, the more info you will get on everything. Invest some time into this forum. PM me if you need any specific help.

Thanks guys believe i did it all correctly now just to find good roms to flash i suppose XD any recommondations or apps ? My first android been on iphones since for ever

[?] Miui vs. touchwiz

I'm currently using simply honey 4.0 rc3 and I've always heard good things about miui but it sounds very difficult to install. I have gb boot loaders so I'm not sure how to install it since they're aosp. Another thing is I've heard miui had inferior battery life to touchwiz roms so can anyone share any advice?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If u flash with gb bootloaders the external sd wont mount no big deal but I quickly grew accustomed to MIUI because its so customizable and I hated touchwiz and as for battery I flashed the glitch kernel and undervolted and I got about 12 hrs with moderate use and my battery was at 61% but I guess battery varys from person to person
Sounds good which miui and how do I backup my efs
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
you can always just flash the froyo bootloader if you switch to miui and you won;t have the external sd problem

Yeah but the complex and tedious work to test a rom just seems a little out there so I wanted to know is miui really worth the big amount of risks I'm happy with my current rom but I've heard good things about miui

Tedious? all you do is put it on the root of your int sd card and flash it...then odin back to stock if you want to go back to Touchwiz based roms.

It's been fixed. ;-) the guide hasn't been updated. Just Odin back to jfd, flash miui. To go back, Odin jfd.

Which rom did you use? You have to make sure it's stock and not stripped.

Clockwork mod instead of Odin

So I use Odin and the snapdragon tool kit to root my phone. I have the stock rooted Rom that came with the toolkit. Right now I have to use the snapdragon toolkit to install Roms but want to be able to use clockworkmod cuz I don't always have my computer with me. So is there anyway to do that? And also what is the best ROM for the sg3

Go to the following link. just download CF kernel latest version. install it using ODIN. that's it you are done now you will be able to use CLOCKWORKMOD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
There are 2 ways to access CWM
1. press VOL UP+HOME+POWER, keep it pressed till samsung logo appears, than let it go.
2. in your app drawer there will be an app CWM, open it than tap on recovery mode and it will boot in CWM.

One question and that is important..if you have a GT-I9300 international version which has Exynos chipset why are you using Snapdragon Toolkit?
and if you have any other version of S3..why are you posting it here?

Sprint has its own forum for the sgs3 varient.......thats where you will get help from.
we can help you, but all the files/tools/roms/and Mods are of pretty much no use to you. so it makes sense to get info from people who have the same device.

get titanium backup and freeze/backup+uninstall SDM that will keep updates from happening. (only for stock rom, once you install a rom it won't be a problem all roms have SDM disabled by default)
you can now flash any touchwiz rom however unless your cwm is loki'd you can't flash aosp roms (such as cyanogen mod, MIUI, aokp...)
so basically if you are not lokied you can flash only roms on the android development board if you ARE lokied you can flash those AND the ones in the ORIGINAL android development board.

Use the galaxy s3 toolkit best way for root I think just read it carefully and use the right variant model and update eg 4.1.2 and not earlier very simple

I found the easiest was was to use cf auto root through Odin on windows laptop and then install a recovery using ROM manager from the play store.. And then away ya go! Don't forget to back up before ya change anything

Rom manager is not such a good idea with the S3. Safer to use mobile odin and Flash a recovery that way.

I didn't realise it wasn't a good idea to use ROM manager with the s3.. Why is that then? I went that way because my laptop is a Macbook and hiemdall didn't seem to work well so I had a quick ten mins on a laptop at work with Odin to root and then I only had my Macbook to use so ROM manager is the way I went too manager seems to be the same thing as well

From experience I can say that using ROM Manager can soft brick your device. I once wanted to use it with my old S2 to install CWM and I got into a bootloop afterwards. Only re-flashing a Samsung ROM via Odin helped to boot into Android.
One of the easiest way (in my opinion) to root your device is to flash a Kernel via Odin that will give you Root. The Siyah Kernel is a good place to start, since the developer also provides tar files for odin to flash. It will give you Root and from then on you can install Stweaks and flash CWM from there.
I wish i d of spoke to u a few months ago when I first rooted cause I buggered about with it for weeks! I didn't realise you could install recovery from steaks either.. Have you got much apple Mac/android sync experience?.. I can only describe it as trying to get arch rivals to mate!.. Might just dual boot windows on the Macbook if I can't get them to play nice
