Hello, im having trouble getting any custom ics rom to boot after flashing any custom ics kernal, I can flash a custom kernal and load up stock ics rom but then as soon as I flash a custom rom I get stuck on the boot animation screen and the rom doesnt boot up. Does anyone have any suggestions why its doing this? its rather annoying being stuck on cm7 when ics is the way forward. Ive tried every custom ics rom and kernal and the only one that works is stock, my bootloader is unlocked, ive ran out of ideas.
if u wana flash a custom rom first flash kernel and then flash custom rom by cwm. and make a full data wipe-factory reset
and also Wipe cache and Dalvik cache before flashing the rom

Hey,man.
Since you've unlocked your bootloader,I think you are able to flash any custom roms successfully.
So,did you fully wipe after flash the kernel?
take FXP rom for example:flash boot.img inside the zip -> go to CWM and fully wipe , install the rom -> reboot and enjoy.
Before flashing a rom, you are supposed to wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. If you are flashing roms like ExMIUI or MiniCmSandwich you will also have to wipe system.

Im not new to installing custom roms, I know the procedure in installing a custom rom, the problem is no custom ics rom boots up using any custom kernal.

I do not know if this will work or not, but you can try flashing stock FTF file for your device and then go through the procedure of flashing kernel and rom again.
do wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then go to mounts and storage and do format system
believe me I have tried everything and nothing works, cm7 works fine with a custom kernal so I dont know what the problem could be.

Did you follow the instruction:
1. flash kernel
2. go to cwm and do wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then go to mounts and storage and do format system + delete from sd card all folders and files with dots
3. flash rom (if rom has the aroma installer follow the aroma instructions)
4. reboot phone (first boot is up to 10 minutes

i'm looking for well explained tutorial on doing a fullwipe before flashing new rom.
thanks...
What phone and firmware do you have and what rom do you want to flash to it ?
before you flash it, make sure you do a backup of course in case anything goes wrong.
i believe you just need to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
Depending on your phone, there are many ways to do a full wipe. You can do it manually in recovery, you could flash Calkulin's format all, or you could flash Virus Rom's superwipe (which is basically calkulin's format all flashed 3 times)

I am using the latest Unnamed 1.1.0 ROM and when I use the shutdown feature, the phone will shutdown, but then reboot immediately. For my install I wiped both data cache and delvik cache before installing, however, I didn't flash from a stock 2.3.4 ROM. Since the directions did not say that was needed, is that not the case, or is this a known bug with unnamed 1.1.0?

If you did not flash from stock 2.3.4 rom and you did not flash from the
previous version of the UnNamed rom that means that you forgot to do a
"Wipe data/Factory Reset" in the clockworkmod recovery before flashing
the UnNamed rom.
Your best bet is to reflash the UnNamed rom but this time when you are in
the clockworkmod menu (CWM recovery) select the "Wipe Data/FActory Reset"
before you flash the rom. (you may want to do a titanium backup of your apps first)
Good Luck!
Also, if you install a theme from a different ROM, the shutdown menu may become rearranged or even nonfunctional.
Thanks Misterjunky, I'll give that a try. Coming from the Samsung Captivate I find the new ROM process a little frustrating. I have been using ODIN to flash the Clockwork (CW) Recovery kernel, then install ROMs via the CW menu. Two questions:
-Is the Wipe Data/Factory reset right there next to the devlik/cache clear on the first CW screen or hidden in advanced?
-Is there an easier way to flash ROMs other than pushing the CW kernel via ODIN?

The "Wipe data/factory reset" is in the default screen which you see first.
Also you only need to flash the odin3 kernel once, not everytime you flash a custom rom.
(SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.TAR - kernel).
The reason is, that if coming from STOCK Gingerbread 2.3.4 rom we cannot flash any custom
roms without first flashing the odin flash kernel because the stock rom does not have a CWM
Recovery compatible kernel.
The other kernels you see here in XDA for our phones are CWM flash zipfiles which we can flash
since after flashing the custom odin3 kernel we now have a kernel that has CWM Recovery
built-in which is required for flashing any compatible custom roms, kernels, themes and other
modifications. (Which are all zipfiles ) - I hope this explains it.
Thanks for the info Misterjunky, that helped. Unnamed isn't rebooting on power any more either. Reinstalled, no issues, must've forgotten to clear both options prior to install.

General steps before flashing a new ROM.
1. Backup your present ROM just incase
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
4. Format /system (under mount)
5. Flash your desired Rom/zips
6. Fix permissions (under advanced)
Notes:
- If you are moving from from an AOSP ROM to Samsung (vice versa), perform all the steps above.
- If you are upgrading / downgrading from one android version to another e.g ICS to jellybean or 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, also perform all the steps above.
- If you are upgrading from a Samsung ROM to another wipe the same android version, you may skip step 1.
- if you are upgrading your Aosp/aokp Rom with another with the same android version e.g 4.0.4 Aosp to 4.0.4 aokp, you may also skip step 1.
*******Important******
If you are presently running a Samsung based 4.0.4 Rom that is using Samsung based kernel e.g CF-ROOT or stock kernel, please flash Siyah kernel before performing any of the above steps. You will end up with an unusable device if you don't adhere to this important information.

Based on the bold, you're in a bootloop. Try to wipe data/ factory reset, clear cache and dalvic in cwm recovery and it should work
Edit: and are you following the steps on the first post of the thread? The creator of the rom usually has step by step instructions on how to install the rom

Hello, I hope this is the right group.
I have spent the last 2 days trying to get JB working on my SGS2. I previously had ICS Hydra h2o 1.4.1 ROM on my device.
The troubles started when I tried booting into CWM recovery. The phone wouldn't go past the yellow triangle so I had to use ODIN to flash stock Samsung ICS ROM on the phone to get it working again. I have since tried multiple JB ROMs with different kernels but most of them get past the yellow triangle but then stop on logos varying between kernels. I am also unable to boot into CWM recovery and must flash a CF-Root kernel using ODIN to get into recovery.
It is strange that this happens only with JB ROMs and I have no trouble installing Hydra h2o again through recovery.
I always use the same method of installing ROMs through CWM:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- install .zip from sdcard
I have also tried fixing permissions before and after flashing ROMs, nothing seems to get me into the OS.
One ROM, Vanilla RootBox, I have found to sometimes boot all the way into the OS but the system frequently freezes and is unstable. Looks amazing tho.
Do you have any ideas on how I could get JB ROMs working with my SGS2? Is there anything I am missing?

Thank you for the reply, but that method does not seem to work either.
One thing I have noticed though is when I select wipe data/factory reset it reports an error formatting /sdcard/.android_secure.
Is this something that could be causing my problems?

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I have tried three versions of syiah, including 4.1.4 but I will try dorimanx and report with the results.
edit: dorimax kernel is the same.
One thing I noticed tough is whenever I wipe dalvik cache the system reports "unknown volume for /ext-sd blablabla" - maybe this is connected to my problem?
I am at a complete stop...
No JB kernels seem to work whatsoever. Is there any wit to flash the bootloader? Or is that even possible?
I really would like to get JB working on my device.
There must be something about the previous state of my phone, some files or folders that are in the way or are missing or somewhat. Is there any way to completely reset the phone? Not just factory resetting it since that is not working.
edit: Progress! These are my steps:
- Downloaded fresh stock Samsung ROM and another version of CF-root.
- Flashed stock ROM and then CF-root kernel.
- Booted into recovery and did the whole wipe.
- Flashed .zip twice (don't know if that did the trick or what)
- Wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions.
After that the phone booted normally and I'm now running ResurrectionRemix with Android 4.1.1, hoping it wil be awesome as ****.

what he is trying to say is that you should flash the kernel AFTER you flash your ROM
the ROM you chose is [CM10][Jellybro] i9100 Nightly Kangs, yes?
anyway..
here is what you should do
1. flash your rom
2. flash gapps for cm10
3. flash a kernel [an example of which is Dorimanx Kernel]
if you are still confused on some terms, please refer here
I hope this helps
EDIT:
you should root your phone first
You know, after flashing a new rom booting may take some more time, at least a few minutes. Have you been waiting enough time?
First, check md5sum of ROM [what Saywhatt wrote a few posts back]
a. If you are no longer in recovery modes then you can get a kernel [tar file] Flashing with Odin.
If your phone then starts normally, then flash the ROM you want through CWM.
*** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
b. If you can get into recovery mode, not flash with Odin, but do these same steps;
**** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
PS. If it fails in step a first flash stock ROM with Odin
sorry for my bad english
