i9100/i777 Paranoid Android touch key disabled - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
The initial build of Paranoid Android ROMs allowed for the total disablement of the native touch keys therefore allowing you to use only the on screen keys native to ICS. I believe the version was 1.2 as 1.3 and up no longer has this option.
Does anyone have a copy of the 1.2 version of Paranoid Android? I didn't have any issues on the ROM and I know it lacks features of what the newer Paranoid ROMs have but I love the fact that you could completely disable the touch key buttons.
Or if there are any other ROMs with the same capability (all though I doubt there is), please tell me, as I have tried all AOSP, AOKP, CM, and Sammy ROMs and have not found this feature again.
Thank you for your time!!!

[Q] What's A ROM

As I understand it, there is a linux kernel that android sits on. I thought the ROM was like a virtual machine running inside of android and then we loaded apps onto that. I read something that indicated that each custom ROM comes with a kernel. Then we can replace that kernel with another one if we wish. I understand that the kernel must be compatible (although I don't know how to tell) but that seems confusing. It would seem that if the ROM is running in android then as long as the kernel can run android, any kernel should suffice. Clearly that is not the case so what exactly is a ROM and why does it interact directly with the kernel?
A ROM in this case is a system image (full or partial) containing the Android operating system, drivers, applications, and/or kernel.
Like with regular PC OS not all kernels are compatible with the larger OS, primarily across major versions.

Rom futures
does anyone know where roms are going? read somewhere 2.3 and 3.0 are forks. that makes sense if 2.3 continues focus on phones, small devices etc and 3.0 continues down the larger tablet track. I am currently running 2.3.3 on gtab and it runs great. it seems to be very tablet friendly. does 2.3 provide much of the functionality of 3.0 for the small screen. can we expect 3.0 to bring additional utility to tabs like the gtab? just curious where we might be headed. keep up the great work. i stay excited about the next build!

This is a GREAT link! Thanks.

possible fix for broken features on new roms - run two kernels?

I realize that one can run and install linux on an android device (which is running it's own kernel on top of android's kernel), so wouldn't it be just as possible to run a factory kernel on top of a modded kernel to regain access to device specific features that only the factory kernel can currently utilize (4g, 3d cameras, etc.)? As far as I understand, linux has access to those features and can interface with them (whether it can do anything with them is another topic, but...), so wouldn't this be a viable solution to make custom ICS, JellyBean, Cyanogenmod roms work 100% with each device? Sorry for the lack of specific technical mumbo-jumbo lingo, just a newbie brainstorming here.

[Q] Lightweight ROM

Hi,
I work in the security and privacy field and would like to start development of a new lightweight ROM with strong security and privacy controls but to be honest I don't have a clue where to start. I am experienced in flashing ROMs onto Android devices (currently have CM on my Nexus 4 and Galaxy Tab 2 as well as Beanstalk on my old HTC Desire Bravo) but have not yet built a custom ROM.
Ideally I would like to build the lightest possible ROM for HTC Desire (as this is my device for experimenting) but there are a number of features/restrictions I would like to include.
I see a lot of ROMs on this site (which I am sure are very good) and some generic guides on how to build ROMs but I need some more specific information. I need to know how to build a kernel which disables access to certain things (such as regular voice calling - this ROM should only permit VOIP calls) - how to strip out all the apps and services I don't want or need, how to include the apps I want installed by default (such as droidwall) and I have yet to come across such a resource.
Ideally I would like to strip the ROM down to the bare minimum required to allow a functioning device with data connectivity and then build it back up with the functionality I need.
Could anyone point me in the right direction?
Hi
I can Need you. You can Port roms .i have a project with Android 5.0 for Mid and Low End devices please join US We can work together but i Need more Rom porter and Kernel builder

Best custom ROMs for Galaxy S4:

Warning
Before flashing a new ROM, ensure that the model of your Galaxy S4 is correct in the procedure: GT-i9500 for the standard version, and GT-i9505 for the 4G version. Flashing the incorrect ROM on your smartphone could brick it.
PAC-Man 4.4.2
PAC-Man is one of the custom ROMS that is gaining a lot of popularity. It integrates many functions from ParanoidAndroid, CyanogenMod and AOKP, so not only does it have a lot of options, most of them have also been improved on. The version of the Galaxy S4 i9500 is based on Android 4.4 KitKat and is currently in its alpha phase, though some wrinkles still need to be ironed out. The last official version for the I9505 is based on Android 4.3, but it’s more stable.
Lidroid allows you to keep the TouchWiz theme for those who are used to it and don’t want to completely eradicate it. Lidroid is based on the official version of Android 4.4.2, is deodexed, and integrates all the base Samsung functions, along with a theme editor and an excellent file explorer. If you would like to step it up a notch without significantly changing the entire user experience, then Lidroid V2.0 is for you!
MIUI
You may ask why we mention MIUI, a custom ROM that almost everyone knows about? That’s because, on the Samsung Galaxy S4, the size of the screen and the MIUI color management work really well together, as if the ROM was made for the smartphone. If you like big icons and the absence of an app drawer, MIUI might just be your thing. The community behind this ROM, which was first developed by the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, is very large and extremely active.
Prism Barebone ROM
Prism Barebone is based on Android 4.3. It is stable and allows you to choose between either the TouchWiz or pure Android design. Pre-installed apps and other bloatware have been deleted, however Samsung widgets still remain on board. It’s like the best of both worlds. Prism Barebone allows you to choose what you want to keep from Touchwiz and what you want to get rid of.
CyanogenMOD 11
CyanogenMod has almost become a staple of custom ROMs. It’s very useful, stable and gets regularly updated. The ROM is so good that it’s almost natural to turn to CM if you don’t know what else to flash. There is version for the Galaxy S4 I9500 and one for the S4 4G I9505, both are in the nightly stage, but are relatively stable. Those who want more can turn to CyanogenMod 10.2, which is based on Android 4.3.

Seeking for a rather recent CM release that fully supports Bluetooth Phone Call !

CM dropped official support due to kernel stability issues. I remember we were discussing ROMs. 7.2 was, according to CM, the last stable version. Due to all the changes when everything became 4.0, the kernel became unstable on our device. Our devs have created a kernel that is stable enough for daily use, but not stable enough for an official CM. You do have CM9, 10, 10.1, 10.2, and 11 that are stable. CM12 needs work before being recommended for daily use.

Thanks for the information, glad to see that i can still get support for this device. :good:
I'm trying to get general information for the last 2 days, reading especially the Q&A and development sections in the forum . If i understood correct;
* There's a new kernel being developed named as [KERNEL] [3.1.10] as you mentioned in your post. This new kernel seems nearly perfect, it just has these 3 downsides regarding the given information on its own topic:
1) HDMI [post-poned] (Nvm, I don't need it)
2) Fingerprint ROM Libs+Framework [work in progress] (Nvm, I don't need it)
3) Flash [work in progress] (Camera flash? It would be nice, but still not mandatory for me)
So i thought i could try the newest unofficial CM releases based on this new kernel. I checked the most-used ones in the development section for CM11, CM10.1, CM10, CM9. But i learned a very disappointing thing in the posts. If it's true, although bluetooth is operable for data transfer, it is NOT working for voice, meaning that i won't be able to use it in my car. :crying:
Other negatives are not that important, but GSM calls over bluetooth is very necessary for me. Because it's a security issue, as most of all need to use our phones while driving! So i regrettably had to eliminate the CM Roms which use this new kernel for now!
I need a Rom that is stable enough and has a wide hardware support such as necessarily:
1) Calls over bluetooth
2) GPS
3) Wi-fi tethering (USB tethering is not important)
Plus; android version must be new enough to support some of the applications. I found out that i need at least CM10 (Android v4.1) for the applications that i need to install.
At the end i can summarize my choices as follows:
* CM7.2 based Roms: All of them seem very stable, but some of my applications doesn't work on Android 2.3, so negative.
* CM9 based Roms: New kernel or not, Android v4.0 is old for a few of my applications. So, negative.
* CM10 based Roms: "CM10 (JellyBean) for Atrix" from @epinter seems very appropriate for me. It doesn't use the new kernel and Android v4.1 is sufficient (recent enough) for my applications. POSITIVE
* CM10.1 based Roms: "CM 10.1(Android 4.2) for Atrix" from @epinter could be very good, but it uses the new kernel. So, negative.
* CM11 based Roms: "CM 11 ( Android 4.4.4 ) for Atrix (BigPart)" from @Zn7mkUKzN1r8aCIV would be perfect, but i think it also uses new kernel, as it's indicated that ".BT phone call" is NOT working. So, negative.
* CM12 based Roms: I saw the "Mokee For Atrix 4g (Android L 5.0.2) (preview)", but as you see, it's not an option for me yet. So, negative.
If i didn't misunderstood what i've read till now, the most appropriate Rom seems;
"CM10 (JellyBean) for Atrix, By epinter" for me.

I think it would be better for me to continue on its own Q&A thread, I don't want to ruin this CM7.2 thread anymore.
Please share your opinions, i really need your advises.
EDIT: Oopss, basic kernel on CM10 seems lacking HW acceleration. So, i can't play NFS Most Wanted, Dead Space, Max Payne etc. games properly, right? What about navigation apps like iGo, Sygic, etc?
EDIT: This post was originally in the "CM7 Q&A" section and moved here as a seperate thread. My aim is not to find the "Best Rom ever" etc., i just seek for a Rom that's similar to the current awesome CM7, which fits my needs. I think i could find the best title for this post.
