[Q] having a hard time transferring stuff to sd card - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

is there another way to transfer pics, roms and etc to the internal sd card and the external sd card other then using this horrible MTP junk? its taken me 10 mins to transfer 3 pictures to my external sd card using the MTP crap. this is driving me nuts. i am starting to hate this phone because its so complicated to transfer anything to the damn sd cards on this phone. i want mass storage back. so much quicker

so nobody has this issue like i do? i cant seem to transfer nothing to my internal or external sd card. even if i get lucky and it does start to transfer, im gonna be waiting at least 15 to 20 mins just to transfer some pictures

How are you doing the transfer? When I plug in my phone, it shows up in "My Computer" just like a disk. I double click my way to the right location and just drag and drop. simple. I was worried because of all the fuss over not supporting UMS, but I think this works as well or better.
One issue I did have was the usb cable I was using. The only one that works for me is the charging cable that came with the phone. If you're usng anything else, try using that cable.

Yes MTP is total crap compared to mass storage, but it's all we really got so...

i plug my phone into my windows 7 pc. it shows my phone, then i click on it and it shows me my internal sd card and external sd card. then i click on my external sd card and drag my photos from the pc to the external sd card and it shows its transferring then it just gets stuck at one point. nothing i can do about it. here is some pics to show u. the one wallpaper i tried to transfer from the pc to my sd card was only 1.43mb and it wont transfer over. when i try to transfer a rom over. forget about it. nothing happens
Edit: the only way i can get my stuff transferred over is to put my external sd card in my gfs sensation 4g and transfer all my files from my pc to her phone. then when i am done i take my sd card out of her phone and put it back in mine. thats the only way i can do it so far. i was hoping there was an easier way but i guess not. this is bs if u ask me. i hate samsung for making this so complicated

yeah it is bs. i was hoping someone would figure out a way to enable mass storage like they do for the international version.

That's what I do. I'm still on XP. Windows 7 is supposed to be better for this. Try the original cable.

thats all i have is the original cable. still no go. idk what up with it.

I had the same issue and turned out to be the two back usb ports I was using. The sgs3 didn't like them and would transfer extremely slow. Weird because I had no issues with my sgs2. I suggest trying different USB ports on your pc.

yep that did it for me.. that is soo odd lol. i used a different usb port in the front since i have 4 of them. now everything transfers pretty quick. thanks for that tip. i still think that is so odd though. :good:
Edit: i hit the thanks button for everyone that tried to help me out.

I'm glad that worked for you. Its very odd indeed but makes me feel better that I'm not the only one or that its not just my pc. Maybe we were using lower speed ports. In any case you should be good to go now and will just have to use those ports like me.

SD Card blank or has unsupported file system.

For no apparent reason, my phone just threw up this warning. I'd really rather not have to format it. Oddly enough, I can't access the Disk Management on my laptop. I put the card in an adapter into my computer and it can't seem to read it there at all either. Doesn't even notice it's in there.
Is there any way I can get to the card to scan it and attempt either to fix it or at the very least get my files off of it? Any way, since neither the computer or the phone can access it, I can use the phone to USB access the card on the computer?

That doesn't sound good :/ If you can't get the phone or computer to read it, it might be toast. Have you tried going into recovery and mounting the sd card and see if it will read? What type of card is it? And what rom were/are you running?

had this happen to my after market 8gb class 8 sdcard .. was very upsetting. the tool i used was msdos based but i can't seem to find the name.
a friend recommends using getdataback fat32 as saying he has used it for 8+ yrs.
i've generally tried to stick to main stream name brand sdcards now ..
sorry for the bad news, but hope the tool helps to recover your sdcard data.
Haven't tried the recovery mounting thing yet. Will give it a shot.

Also, can anyone show me to a definitive guide as to how to install the Android 1.0 drivers?

Think I got the right driver installed. How would I be able to see the card through fastboot though? I'm a little lost on that one.

Doing something wrong? connecting to computer...

OK so I connected my prime to my PC to transfer over some music and videos to occupy me for my upcoming trip specifically to my micro SD card, and it only connects "as media Device" and shows up in my computer as portable media player. This if F-ing retarded I just want it to operate as a disk drive as my phone does. I plug my phone in and it asks me like a good piece of silicon should.
Maybe I am missing something and all is well but where is that option? It is a problem because it just doesn't work, if I want to check a file on my prime from my PC it has to copy it to some temp spot on my pc????? also I tried copying 12gb over and it was going to take something ridiculous like 4 hours!!!!
I stick the same card in my android GB PHONE and it copies in ~ 20 minutes so is this and ICS thing or is this just yet another stupid move by ASUS?
I have tried to be objective with this tablet, I have barely posted anything bad in the 2 MONTHS (today) I have owned it but this just annoys me along with the bluetooth/Wifi problem, non existent GPS, random reboots, seemingly shotty haptic feedback and 4 hot spots on my screen. I would send it in to get fixed however I honestly am loosing faith in ASUS and want it for my trip to Vegas on Monday and then I'm going to Jamaica in a month.
On top of this I Pmed Gary and he must think I was digging for a lawsuit as he said he would be caught up om PMs last weekend expect for the ones he deleted feeling they were asking things in a way that was digging for a lawsuits? I have never taken a law course in my life and don't even have my own lawyer.
I just feel really betrayed and I'm sorry my little question turned into a rant I just needed to get it all out. I will send it in when I am not in need of the tablet and make my final judgement then but as it stands neither me nor my family (as I am the tech guy) will EVER buy anything ASUS again.
when I plug my prime into a computer it shows up as a media device just like you said, however I can double click on it and access the tablets internal storage and microSD card just like a USB hard drive. Transferring files too and from the tablet seem about as fast as transferring them to my USB hard drive.
Also I don't known what phone you have, but my Galaxy S2 also acts like a media device and doesn't ask me what kind of USB connection I want to make. But likewise I can still access the internal storage and microSD card just like they were a mounted hard drive.
I am connecting my devices to several Windows 7 PCs.

Thanks, I'm using an HTC amaze and off it i can play my files directly and transfer rate was literally 10 times faster. I did realize clicking it shows both storage directories but its super slow and try playing a copied file.
I'm using win 7 64 bit on my PC.
It's because the Prime (and most if not all new Android devices) use MTP which is MUCH slower than the previous method. So no, not Asus as fault this time!
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA
This might not work for you, but both my Win 7 laptop and my Win 7 desktop have SD card slots built into them. I find it much easier and faster to just pop the microSD card slot out of the Prime and plug it into my PC to move large files over to my tablet.
An microSD -> SD card adapter is much smaller to carrier around than even data cable, and they are cheap enough that you can get a bunch and just stash them around places you might need to do transfers in. I actually use an SD card adapter to replace the dummy card that came with my laptop. It still protects the SD card slot and at least now I have something functional in there.

that would be the ideal solution however my PC doesn't have a card reader
They use it (if I recall correctly) because it allows for the entirety of the devices storage to be used for any purpose. I'm not sure the trade off on performance is worth it though.

[Q] why does transferring pics and etc. take so long to transfer?

hey guys, i just got my GS3 from tmobile and i know there is no USB Mass Storage which sucks. but when i try to transfer pics or anything it is so damn slow. i was just wondering why its soo slow. i dont have a external sd card yet so im only using the internal sd card for now.
Edit: i cant seem to get anything to transfer to this damn internal sd card because it starts to transfer then just gets stuck and does nothing. this is pretty retarded lol.
nobody can help? i want to transfer my pic and stuff to my new gs3 and this is being a real pain in the ass. what was samsung thinking. lol

i was at first and i have no external sd card. im transferring all my files to the internal 12gb of memory. it wont transfer anything. i tried one picture and it would start transferring the file then it would stop and never finish. i have no idea whats going on.
edit: im using windows 7 64 bit and im just dragging my files (from my pc) to the folders in the internal sd card. ive never had these issues before with any phone.
well i tried putting a sd card in the phone and transferring files like roms and pic from my pc to my phone. but it sometimes it didnt work, i would get an error or something like that or it just took way to damn long. what the hell is wrong with this damn phone. ive never had issues with any other phone transferring files from my pc. i guess mass storage makes that big of a difference. samsung needs to bring it back.

Usb mass storage mode? HELP!!!

Ok so I just upgraded yesterday from the HTC inspire and I must say I'm liking the S3. Except for one thing, no usb mass storage mode? Duuuwwwhhhaaaatttt??? This is awful...just awful.. I work night shifts and play minecraft a lot at work
D) and alwayed used my inspire for transfering the save data on my work computer to my personal desktop at home... I NEED this FIXED.!! I have the 16GB sd card I pulled out of my inspire shoved in the S3's ext-sd slot and would love to know how to use it as a usb mass storage like I did on my inspire.. I have tried the easy ums app and it doesn't work :/ so here I am, humbly asking for help from you geniuses...

Not sure if this is what you're asking but here goes...
I just started using the S3 as well, upgraded from an S2 T989 (T-mobile)
On the S2, when I connect to the USB port, I can "turn on" usb mass storage mode to connect to the PC and I'm not seeing that option here on the S3.
However, when I connect the phone to my PC, I get the following options:
- Media device (MTP): automatically checked
- Camera (PTP)
And when I check on "camera (PTP)", my PC would recognize the phone as SGH-T999. And when I click on it, I would have two options:
- Card (External SD)
- Phone (Internal SD)
From here, I can just copy and paste whatever from PC to SD card and vice versa.

Well let me start with this then..on my inspire, I could plug it up to any computer and it would show up as a disk drive and I could transfer baby file back and forth at my will.
Now that I have my S3, I've realised that they've done any with usb mass storage and adopted mtp. Which doesn't work for me. I get a message 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.'
I can also connect through ptp and it will transfer most files, but not all. It will get to a certain point it gives me the good ole 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.' message.
So overall, my question is simply this, is there a way to enable usb mass storage for the external sd card on my sgs3? Either by fixing easy ums to work for a 1747 or by installing another app that I don't know about.
Btw, my s3 is rooted, running stock Rom and stock kernel, stock everything. I've installed busybox as well.

Well add me to the list of: MTP sucks! This is pretty awful, I mean if there is a work-around fine, but we shouldn't HAVE TO work around just to get Mass Storage support.
As of now we are stuck with MPT.
Works ok though I guess, I can move files back and forth. You can also try using a wifi explorer if your on the same network.

Dont stress out too much, I see that your new here, stick around for a while and see what the devs here can do with these phone. Its amazing the stuff the create for us... 99% of the time for FREE! Its really a great place, its just not very newb friendly. Ive been here this long and Im still a newb (compared to other forums I belong to...).
But yea, stay for a while and watch the magic happen (Geez, that should be our tag line... )

Alrighty!! I've done some snooping around and found this!!!:
Here's a thread for the AT&T S3 on Mass Storage, requires some tinkering though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768752&highlight=mass+storage
So basically if you follow all the instructions, your 1747 will be able to mount its external sd card as a usb mass storage. Tried it myself!!! Amazing!!! Haha!!! Life is good once again...
In addition to the above steps, I also had to do something else. I'm running windows 7, but I don't see why it would be any different for any other windows, and after I installed gscript I had to go to device manager in windows, find your phone (should be under portable devices) and then right clicked and updated driver software. After that finished, the pc had to reboot. After reboot, I ran the scripts in gscript... Aaannnndddd... BAM.! MAGIC.!
I hope this helps those who are frustrated with their 1747 as well... this is a temp fix until a better one comes out... buuuuttt... cheers

I'm not using the I747 (I take it thats the T Mobile branded version), Im in fact using the SCH-I535, Verizon version. Due note that the phone does contain GSM radios so I am able to use it on T for voice (perfect!) and edge data (expected but better then nothing)...
I'm assuming SMS & MMS work as well, albeit untested.

Also, i just ran into this problem... the fix i mentioned above worked on my work computer but now that im home and i tried it..it didnt work.. :/
BUT!! i figured out the problem. The difference between my work and home computer? Kies... idk if it was that progam itself or just the drivers that came along with it but regardless i uninstalled kies and all the drivers associated with it. After that i plugged in my phone, ran the "mount" script and voila. MAGIC ONCE AGAIN!
Just thought i would inform the masses on what ive done so far to fix this problem
There is another option....
Get yourself a little adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027YYMU6/
Then you can plug any USB drive directly into that.. then the adapter into the phone.
Your phone will see it as a normal USB Drive... you can then use any filemanager to transfer files from the phones SD to that USB drive... Unplug the USB, pop it into a computer and you're all set.
I'll admit it's a bit kludgy, but until storage mode becomes available, you can use this on OS's that won't work properly with the existing MTP.
NOTE: Might want to buy a FEW adapters... i bought 1, worked great.. friend bought 2 more.. neither worked.. same brand etc... I have 2 more on the way just in case..but for .79 plus free shipping no reason not to buy half a dozen hehe

Yea, that would work... but im more on the side of "my phone should do this" lol dont know why they completely removed usb mass storage... they shouldve at least made it optional in the settings or something, ya know? those little adapters would work but idk how id feel about having to carry around an adapter just so i can transfer files..
Heres a scenerio:
Say my friend calls me up and wants a file that i have on my computer, so i use that adapter and transfer it to my phone, go to his house only to realize i accidentally left the adapter stuck in my computer at home :/ thats a pain in the you know what lol

The WHY actually is documented around here somewhere... the short version is, with the way the OS is written, mounting the card as USB storage makes it unavailable to the system. Since most of the newer Androids OS use the SD card more heavily (such as A2SD type stuff) it would render applications 'broken' whenever the USB was plugged in.
That's the official story.. I'm not sure I buy it myself as I've seen apps that let you use the SD card on my original EVO AND have USB mode enabled just fine.. granted transfer rates sucked, and occassionally a file would get corrupted, but it worked 99% of the time. I don't know what 'tricks' those apps used to get it to work, but I don't see why Google couldn't use those same tricks directly in the OS.
Another option btw.. is Wifi Explorer Pro. If you're PC is on the same WiFi network, you can run the app then go to a webpage on your PC to upload/download files as needed. It's not as fast as a cable.. but it does work pretty well and is simple to use.

[Q] Backing up Internal Storage

I seem to have accumulated a lot of stuff in my internal storage. Every time I have flashed a new ROM, it seems to just move everything into a directory called '0' and starts the root from scratch.
I am about 6 '0' directories deep now, and its taking up 10gb.
I would like to just backup the whole lot to my PC, then next time I flash a new ROM just format the internal SD card as well and get back all that precious space!
Plugging in the USB and copying over that way is apparently going to take over 1 day to copy everything, and I think from trying to do this before it got to a certain point and then something broke. Its using the soft mount, without a drive letter (this is so SO much slower and less successful than back in the day with the proper mass storage mounting).
Also Kies wont even connect to the phone even though a) I am loathe to use something like that and b) it would likely not get all the files I want anyway.
So how can I just take a full backup of my Internal Storage, ensuring it gets all files, and doesn't take 24 hours+ (which is ludicrous for only 10gb of files)
Cheers

How does it take more than one day to copy 10 gb? Mine copies 90 gb in less than an hour. There might be a problem with ur cable or computer.

Yea sounds like someone needs an upgrade to there PC... Or some serious cleaning... Maybe splurge on a good USB cable... Or if its an older PC try a different port one that's USB 2.0 @ least

Its an i7, 12gb RAM, etc. Definitely doesn't need an upgrade. And I get the same issues copying to other machines, using other cables, on different ROMs etc. Just seems like MTP is a buggy POS. Have seen other people complaining about the same thing, so I presumed it was just the way it was.
Might see if my other halves N4 is as bad, would rule out my S3 or not.
Anyways, couldn't get it mounted in Ubuntu, all sorts of issues. Might try setup FTP server on the phone and go over wifi

MTP still being lame regardless of PC / OS. this is getting silly now. tried an ftp server on the phone but it seems really flakey on files it moves and fails on
all i want is to take a complete internal SD backup, so I can do a full wipe and start from scratch, cant believe it is this hard to do
is there anything that will dump internal SD to external SD? then I can just remove the external SD and copy manually

yeah. I guess u could just copy from ur internal SD to ur external SD manually. 10 gb... Well... On a phone. Ur 'i7 12 gb' com takes 1 day plus to copy so i hope u are mentally prepared xD. I will rly just use the com to copy paste. Since if u copy and paste it in ur external sd. It will be thr forever unless u copy and paste it to ur com. Which will take another day.
