[Q] Modify build.prop file without root access? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The answer to this is probably no, but wanted to ask anyway
Is it possible to modify the build.prop file without root access?
Trying to eliminate the screen redraw issue for widgets (stop the delay for them to re appear when going back to the home screen ) and wanted to try adding the ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 command
However, my handset is locked to t-mobile so in their wisdom I can't get the latest update and can't seem to modify the file
Thanks. Eon.

Hi,
Without root... not possible.
And in any case this line in the build.prop do nothing with Ice Cream Sandwich. A modified services.jar can help for your launcher redraws (or widget redraws) but also here you need root...
Some roms contains a modified services.jar or you can search in the operating system section/Android software and hacking for v6 supercharger where you can easily modifie your services.jar online... you always need root for these kinds of mods.

To edit some strings of build.prop file present in your Android device. To be able to do you need of course on the rights of Root as action be granted only to those who possess the administrator rights.

Enable navigation bar Jelly Bean 4.+

Hi Guys,
This is a quick dev guide to enable navigation bar for MyPhone A919i and Micromax CanvasHD.
The Jelly Bean operating system brought a whole new fluid user interface and some major tweaks.
"The soft keys were still there and i know many many guys very badly want those soft keys and it required lot of hassle on ics. But it is a lot easier on Jellybean. Either you can use the same method (if you prefer to) or you can try the new easier, safer and shorter method. And the best part is the soft keys work on STOCK ROMS!"
Now it’s time to edit! :victory:
1. The first and foremost thing you need is ROOT!
2. Then you will be needing a app on your device to edit the build.prop file. I recommend downloading ES File Explorer or Root Explorer from the play store.
3. First, backup your rom!…if anything goes wrong you will be able to restore it.
4. Open root explorer and navigate to the build.prop file in system/. Open it via your favorite text editor and look for qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 and change it to qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
5. And save the file. Now reboot.
You’re all done! Enjoy your on-screen buttons!
If you decide you don’t like them, simply change the "0" to "1" and you’re back to normal.
Please hit thanks and give credits.
There is another way to get this right. Root your phone!!! Install Xposed Framework. Then Install Gravitybox mod. Now Gravitybox 2.4.1 has the option to override system and enable this navigational bars on screen. Not only that. It also allows to customize the navigation bar which is not possible with your way.

[Q] Is it safe to modify build.prop?

I want to make Asphalt 8: Airborne think I have an s4, so I can unlock higher graphic settings, is it safe? How do I do it?
I'm running CyanogenMod with Android 4.2.2
My friend did that (Galaxy Y) to update one of his game and it is safe. Just create a backup file of your original build.prop first before editing.

I have a GT-P5100
Apparently, I can't find any way to edit it
I also need others to tell me if it's safe or not
Bump.

As long as you have away of backing up and restoring the original build.prop then it is safe. The easiest way is with a nandroid back up or you can make a flashable zip with the original build.prop. If these are things that you have never ever heard of...then maybe you shouldn't mess with the build.prop.
OK, you will need to root your device. You can modify the build.prop using ROM Toolbox Lite from the playstore. That is probably the easiest way to do it or if you have a rooted file explorer you can also navigate to the build.prop and then open it in a text editor on your android device and modify it there (you will have to change the permissions to RW and when you are done change them back to RO). If you copy it to your PC make sure you use a compatible text editor, if you use Word, you will be sad After pushing the edited version back to your device's system folder, make sure to change the permissions because they will be all messed up. Reboot your device so the new changes get implemented.

[Dev's] Potential Sony Exploit using Sony's app

I was playing around with my Z2 I have flashed Lollipop using Flashtool (All Official).
I found two interesting apk's that can be installed over the existing ones as an update (Which have a permission to write to system files I guess).
I tried to decompile them but no luck. What I had in my plan is to inject some code in the apk that will let it give permission to other application that we specify in the Manifest.xml (It is a long shot)
I will attach the apk's
/system/app/PremiumSmsUpdate
/system/priv-app/UpdateCenter
Both can be installed over and over with no failed installation.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to inject one of the two apks with something to root?
Thanks
Safar
Just a simple yes or no from a developer would do it
No because SELinux will pick it up and kill it

Dual window for all apps

Is it possible to have all app in dual window with out rooting. I've seen some threads about editing the build.prop but usually that needs root. Is there another way to edit or replace build.prop via side loading or something.

Back to Android and Feel like NOOB! Help

I have just moved back to Android from Windows Phone...Please don't shout at me, I enjoyed Windows UI but the app support is just awful.
Got myself a Z5 compact....obviously, why would I be posting here otherwise.
Its second hand and locked to o2, just waiting on the unlock code to get that sorted, but I hate the o2 animation. I have downloaded an alternative, however when in es file explorer, I can't seem to delete/rename or move the current bootanimation file. Some please tell the dummy what he is doing wrong. or another way to get rid of o2's stupid bubbles.
Everything is standard stock.
I feel like a complete beginner again.
Thanks!
Try root explorer, if no luck, you will have to root the phone to wonder in those protected sector.

You need root to modify system apps
Just flash a non branded ftf with flashtool
You don't need an alternative file manager or another ROM to be able to change the bootanimation. You only need root access. SuperSU needs to grant root permission to ES and in ES File Explorer you need to set Root Explorer on, and system R/W.
Possibly the default bootanimation isn't located in system/media (where you can drop your bootanimation) but somewhere else.
- you need to ROOT your phone to alter boot animation
- Sony releases Stock version for various LOCKED phones Verison, At&T, o2 etc. I am not sure what will happend if you FLASH stock rom (original) over locked o2. will it boot? or will it go in bootloops. however its worth trying atleast.
have both o2 version of ftf file and original ftf stockrom ready!
Just followed steps to try and unlock bootloader and the status states that "Bootloader unlock allowed: No" I presume there is a workaround, can someone help? Thanks
