You shouldn't lose any data when reflashing

Make a nan-droid backup fom recovery. Wipe everything. Flash new CM7. I recommend CM7.2 by FAT. Go to recovery -> backup and restore -> advanced restore -> restore data

Yes,but remember not to use this method in the future when you are flashing stock over cm as it wont work coz cm is a different build.

It probably wont go into a bootloop if you just restore data. No harm in trying.

Now then guys... i am thinking about rooting my phone to put jelly bean on my samsung galaxy s2 .... i was just wondering views on which is the best one to go for ( LINKS PLEASE ) and is it easy to do you know the usual questions you will have heard them before lol IM A NEWBIE !!!
Cheers People
Download Siyah 3.5.2.
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/07/29/siyahkernel-s2-v3-5/
Tar for Odin.
Then use this guide.
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s2-i9100-root-android-4-0-3-ics-xwlpd-88120/
Nevermind it says Cf-root. I flashed my Siyah kernel that way.
After that, flash any rom you want in recovery. Just do a Nandroid backup in recovery and backup apps with Titanium backup from Market!!!

Don't restore apps after flashing newer ROM, cause your phone will bootloop.
Better create text file and write names of installed apps.
Im not sure why everyone is worried about backing up there apps ive flashed about a 100 roms and never had to back them up cause if u go to the play store under my apps there always there
Infact there are apps there id forgotten about just pick which ones u want and re install .some roms auto instal them for u .make sure you have a google acc obviously!

What type of data? Music and photos are saved to the external SD card for me, and as for game save data, I believe that is externally backed up as well.

Only if the application is on the external memory card then it's backed up there. Otherwise they'll loose the data if that's not the case.

If you restore from google play, you loose all your app settings and you will have to reconfigure each app.
Also, Google Play will not show apps installed offline (apk)
Restoring app data with third party app like titanium backup is safe if app is compatible with the target rom

CWM-and have you bothered reading a Rom thread as there's normally install instructions.
And when I get bored of a rom I just restore my nand backup of something previous.

in order to install a perticular custom rom , all u have to do is to follow the install instruction's of the same in there OP. and the same applies to all other roms also.
since installation instruction do vary from one custom rom to another
Jasper, you are better to read up on things so you are familiar with the processes of like rooting/kernels/roms/cwm/Odin/troubleshooting.
I understand reading 1000s of posts is tedious, but you could end up with a non working phone.

restore the backup you made before flashing the mod...
ALWAYS BACKUP, IN CASE YOU F*** UP
I always backup before I flash anything, for two reasons
1. In case it causes a problem on my phone
2. I dont like what i have flashed.

download the rom from the phone...and reinstall rom? (I'm actually thinking it's a pretty lame asnwer but it might help)
Just doing some tidying up of the place. Moved to Q&A. Thanks everyone.
Hi!
I was wondering, before I do something stupid , if there's any problem on doing an advanced restore, restoring only data, so I could get my apps, contacts, etc on my just flashed ROM Cyanogen Mod 9, for locked bootloader. I have two nandroid backups, one with the stock ROM ICS 6.1.1.B.1.10, and the other with a custom rom, I think called ZXperience.
So, can I do a data restore easily without messing anything?
Thanks!
PS: I'm using Sony Xperia U
Depends on cwm version, if it's 6 then you can't but if below then you can

Thanks for response!
Well, I had 6, so I install the v5... I did na advanced restore from the stock ICS ROM. Now, when turn on, it shows sony logo, then it shows cyanogen mod boot animation, then flashes, get's back to sony logo, and then to cyanogen mod boot animation again and so on.
I can't still boot into CWM Touch Recovery.
How can I restore my settings, contacts, etc?

Ahaha, sorry if I'm being to noob, but I was able to sucessfully install my apps, how do I get my contacts and app data back? I see a lot of contacts and data related files but do I have to manually placed them in the right folder or there's an easier way?
Thanks!

I wasn't sure, a little odd, but it's ok. I used Titanium Backup Pro to restore app+data from a nandroid backup. Much easier.
Thank you so much for the help and patience!
Stay good!

One way, I think would be to reflash your current rom.

You won't need to wipe data if you're flashing the same ROM but yes, you should always backup. Always take a Nandroid backup before flashing ANYTHING. Also think about using Titanium backup for individual apps.
You should read:

i just use the stock firmware that came withthe phone so im unsure on how to reflash them
All in that thread I suggested you read although its probably easier for you to flash stock from Odin....

maybe u can use a launcher, like adwlauncher it let you change icons of your apps
If I wear to do an advanced restore and only remote the /system would that make any difference to my personal data, as it is syst apps that are modified such as the sms and phone app
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Or, if you have Nova Launcher installed, you could go to Nova Settings>Look and Feel>Icon Themes>Default or Stock Jelly Bean

I already use action launcher and have been for a while now, but the problem is that parts inside the all have been changed and also my apps on the block screen
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
In that case, I think one option for you to preserve stock look/icons would be to heed the earlier post/s by rootsu - flash stock firmware from your region/country using Odin. It shouldn't take that long.

Right. When I mentioned earlier about taking Nandroid backups before flashing things, that probably would have been a good time to bring that up.
