Some pixels not as dark as others - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Just noticed the other day when I pulled down my notification bar. In the lower left quadrant I can see a small circle of pixels that are darker than the rest of the screen. I can only see it in a dark room with a black background. Anyone else with this issue?

It's called "black crush" and last I heard, Supercurio was trying to develop something to alleviate it. Google search it and you should see some results
Edit: nm you do have those black blotches common in samoled screens

Those are the "blotches" that you will hear people talk about. They are common on the Samsung SAM-OLED screens and have been a problem since the Galaxy S. If it really bothers you your best bet is return it and try another one, but that is hit or miss you might get one thats worse. Its a problem with manufacturing process of the screen (no software fix).

I guess it's kinda relieving to know it's common but not at the same time

Yup. I got my replacement the other day and it still had it but not as bad as the first one. Chances are you're better off winning the powerball than getting a perfect amoled screen

Was really drunk last night and noticed it while using my phone outside. Can't see it at all in normal use, but seeing it for the first time really bothered me. Well, for a whole 5 minutes at least.

It doesn't have to do with the retina displays...just the type of material. Apple and HTC use LCD variants and the manufacturing process doesn't introduce these black ink marks.

You are paying way too much attention to your phone.

On the contrary, alot of launch 3Ds had problems and many still do. Mines has a tilted screen and light leakage but im dealing with it. Others overheat. Others have reboot locks. Research before you call someone a idiot...

I think people return their phones over every little flaw. Honestly i think if u go through 6 it means u have the problem. Imo sprint shouldnt give u another phone over light leakage, people seem to be spoiled.

Those are stupid reasons to waste time exchanging phone after phone. Light leakage and a tilted screen don't hinder functionality in the least. I've got the light leakage...oh well. I don't use my phone in the dark a lot for it to be an issue and even if I did oh well....it still works. Some people are exchanging their phones constantly for retarded reasons. I have a hard time believing that out of 6 devices ALL of them were defective to the point that they couldn't be used.

For to is this you.
I think what he is thinking is if you coat it with ink it will block the light, but there needs to be a barrier between where the LED and the screen seperate. I'm just not bold enough to go taking mine apart when I just disable them completely
I haven't taken my phone apart yet, need to to replace the ear speaker.
But a thin piece of electric tape would probably fix it, just like we did for the camera bleed.

true - but not all of ours are rooted. Tried the Screen Filter and it doesn't seem to resolve the issue completely. It sort of just "SUGAR COAT" it.

Underlying screen issue

I have returned one Razr Maxx for this issue. The unit I have know also has this issue. I will explain...
Your screen has to be black. I achieve this by either doing a google image search for black image or.. While hdmi out to TV (screen goes to black while hdmi out)
When screen is black and you yourself are in a dark room, example: laying in bed with lights out.
Look at your screen. You will see black blotches or black lines on your screen.
The two maxx phones i've had both show these abnormalities but... They appear differently between the two phones.
Wondering if this is a screen issue or is it some kind of glue underlying the screen.

OK. Look at it in the dark on a black screen and see what you can find. Or go to some content and see what it can do.

It's a AMOLED display and this is normal. All AMOLED displays have this at some degree.
I've never looked at it in a dark room. it's a phone. It's not a proofing display.
My screen has this problem as well. It def looks like a manufacturing defect, but I noticed after the 14 days so vzn wouldn't give me a new phone just a refurb. I just decided to keep it for now maybe I'll do a warranty claim later.

Side effect of the Super Amoled display. All Razr' will have this. Exchange to your hearts content but you won't get one without it. Look at it like this though. What problems does your current device NOT have? When you exchange your device you might pick up new issues. Just keep that in mind.

Oh, yeah, sometimes the actual screen is a half a millimeter or so to one side or the other so the black space around it can be bigger on one side than the other. But as long as the screen isn't crooked (i.e. it's straight up and down as it appears to be) I wouldn't worry about it.

Had you mentioned that in the original post you may have got a less terse response.
Either way what you are talking about is the misplacement of the screen within the case by about 1000th of an inch. if that really is an issue for you then I suggest going back to your supplier and trying to get a refund or replacement.

Well, it's a very minor aesthetic issue that doesn't affect the phones performance, so it's really a matter of opinion on how big an issue it is. If it's really bugging you, you can try and get it replaced. But in my experience almost every phone has minor issues like this. Some are less noticeable because their front panels are entirely black and mask the minor alignment quirks. But if the screen bumps right up against white or some other color, you're probably going to notice it more.

Though I do have to say, the gs4 has a nice screen too.

i haven't checked one out in person yet, but to be honest, i'm over AMOLED.
the fact that my white GS3 has banding issues on gray backgrounds (while my blue S3 doesn't..) and the fact that my white S3 also has thos infamous black AMOLED splotches when the screen is black, makes me not want to ever purchase an AMOLED screen again.
my DNA has one tiny stuck white pixel on it that i don't even notice anymore..i'd much rather live with that than the banding/vertical lines and the black splotches in the dark. samsung can keep their AMOLED; i'm diggin SLCD!
I have a nexus 7 that I use all the time when at home. When I go from the nexus to the Dna it is like night and day. The Dna screen is flat out gorgeous.

Agreed... The only reason I'm using my n7 right now is because it felt abandoned.

haha yeah poor nexus... but that screen is still better than the screen on the gs3 lol.
i actually really like the n7 screen. at first I thought it was too washed out, which is sort of is... but i got one anyway and loved it. I don't use it often anymore since getting the dna, but i still really like it a lot. I'm waiting to see what the next n7 will be like with the 1080p screen. i'll probably get that and give my n7 to my dad lol
