So I accidently dropped my phone in water yesterday. I immediately powered it off and when I got home a couple of hours later, disassembled it, dried it off best I could and put the components in rice overnight. Today I reassembled and it will not turn on at all. I took it back apart and put it back in the rice.
I'm seriously screwed if this phone is dead. I REALLY can't afford $600.00 for a new one. I might have to buy a damn flip phone and lose my unlimited VZ data if I can't get it to work....
Is there anywhere out there that repairs phones like this? Anyone got a tip that might bring it back to life? I'm desperate!

Or get a job to afford a new one. There isn't much you can do otherwise. Leave it in rice again for 24 hours see what happens but it doesn't sound good.

putting the phone in a bag of rice overnight isnt enough. put more rice in the bag, zip it up, and stick it somewhere that gets sun, youll want at least 3-4 days.
Still in 30 days period ? Make sure u dry it up then exchange it

I would try to find silica packs instead of rice. And yes, you will want to leave this in a warm dry spot for at least a week. Even then, there may be corrosion which will forever affect the device.
If you can't find a quart sized bag of silica baggies, then change the rice daily.

I am going to make your day if u used American express to buy your phone. They have a 90 no question asked insurance policy included with every purchase. Check if your credit card has the same feature. They also add 1 year warranty to everything u buy too. I use it for big purchases and save money by not adding store ought warranties

Probably too late now but that's why they sell insurance. Then your only out the deductible. I rarely get insurance but on a phone that retails for 600+ I went for it. Anyway hindsights 20/20 so gl with the rice.

1st thing you did wrong is drop the phone in water. 2nd thing was trying to turn it on. Could of made it worse.
Like said before leave it in a bag of rice or something similar for a few days. There may be small chance of hope.

If you have it apart, put everything except the battery and screen in some 97% alcohol. Just for a minute, then let them dry out. The alcohol will push the corrosion and water away from the parts.
My son put my GS2(Epic Touch) in the toilet a few times.I took it apart,dried it out with paper towel first then put it in the oven for 2 minutes.
When i was sure it was fully dry,i put it back together,put the battery back in and BOOM it still worked!
Stop listening to these fools who know next to nothing about electronics,first thing you do after your phone been in water take out the battery and dont push the power button.Take it apart and dry it out like i did but dont over cook it in the oven.That rice thing will surelly corode your phone inside and rarely works.
After i did this everything stlil worked,except one thing-the power button,lol.Power button workes only one time-to turn the phone on but after the phone is on it doesnt work any more.So in order for me to turn on the screen i would have to wait untill someone calls or txt me or plug the phone in the usb so i can unlock the screen or battery pull.I suspect this happened because my girl when she found the phone wet tried to turn it on to see if it worked and she shouldnt have.
Anyways without power button working that made my phone almost useless-almost.
I put two screws in back cover and mounted the phone by my son's bed,i plugged it in the outlet that was connected to a light switch.So if i want to turn the phone on i simply hit the light switch and the screen will light up so i can unlock it.
Now my 2 year old son has a mini tv by his bed so he can watch cartoons and play games,this is something that i used to dream of when i was a kid,lol.

Yeah he is right,i forgot to mention aclcohol-it helps i did that to but dont soak it in alcohol!Take a q-tip,soak it in alcohol and go over the electronoc board carefully,make sure none of the cotton got caught in the chips.
What i did i just went over the metal strip that connected the phone to the screen with alcohol to make sure it had good contact.
The key is to put the phone parts in the oven including the screen to let it get hot enough to evaporate any left over water
without melting the parts.
I put it in for about 2 minutes on 500 degrees.I took it out when the phone was almost too hot to touch-almost too hot.
should have blow dried it soon as you opened it up.
Oh and forget about rice-thats what the oven is for.Or if you dont know or scared about using the oven and overcooking the phone,just use a hair dryer.
Put it on the highest heat setting and start heatting the phone parts untill they are too hot to touch.
Rice is the last resort option for thing that you cant dissasemble,if you can take it apart and dry it out there is no need for rice-ever.

When you take apart the phone and dry it out there is no longer need for rice.Now if you had a unibody phone that was hard/impossible to take a part or put back together then that would call for the bag of rice to slowly soak up the water.

Went swimming last and forgot my phone was in my pocket, it was only underwater for a minute till I pulled it out. I dried dried it off the best I could and even used a hair dryer but I think the screen is ruined. When I power it on it vibrates and the lights flash on like normal just the screen is blank.

Here's a fix...
First, your battery is definitely done. But the phone is not. Take the phone apart. Don't get too crazy just separate the main screen piece from the backing and battery cover. Then, fill a sandwich baggie with dry rice and put all the pieces in with it. Let it be for about 24 hours (longer is better). Put it back together. You should be good to go (hopefully your new battery has arrived). If there is moisture left in the the screen, it'll look funny but it dried out for me after a couple more days and looked normal.
Obviously, no guarantees here, but this has worked for me...twice. It's not a perfect fix but it'll save you a few bucks.

Don't leave the phone on the bed while you are having fun with your wife. Oh wait. Whenever I go to the steam room or next to a pool I keep my phone away from humidity.
lol ill keep that in mind, Right now I'm having a connection problem. wifi seems to work but really slow. Also I am unable to connect to 3G or any other network. I cant make or receive calls or surf the web. I tried wiping and flashing the newest TazzFroyo rom but I still have the same problem. Any ideas?

Best advice ever given on xda. Im an electronics repair guy for the army and whenever someone brings us a wet device we do exactly this. Take it apart as much as your skills allow and you are comfortable with, then leave it in rice for a couple days. After all this take some canned air and blow it out to make sure there isnt any dirt or particles in there and put it back together...

I have dropped my phone in water for 30 seconds or so and pulled the battery as fast as I could, then placed everything (taken as far apart as I could) on my radiator on top of a couple of pencils (to avoid direct contact) for a couple days and my phone has never shown any problems including battery.
Last night i was out, and well basically my phone isnt working and im 90% sure its water damage now, the screen has little white bits round the end, whats the best way to get it working again, because it wont turn on :/

My girlfriend knocked her phone off the counter into the toilet when she was sick (needless to say phone had some chunks on it as well). It was game over. luckily in US we are able to insure it and we are now getting a new one for the one time "low cost" of $125. 125 is better than a full retail, thats for sure. I made her call AT&T before just to see if we could weasel a SII on early upgrade, no dice.
Moral: Insurance ftw

Best thing to do would have been to take out the battery/sim/sdcard and put in dry rice immediately, then leave overnight. Might not be too late either, but def should have done that right away. Right after I got my Captivate I got really drunk and accidentally soaked it, I didnt even realize it had gotten so wet until I woke up the next morning and tried to turn it on. It even tried to boot, showing the Samsung screen briefly then immediately turning off. Taking the battery door off there was water drops inside. After about 18 hours in rice I was soooo surprised that it booted right up and I havent had a problem out of it to this day!! I still use it all the time.

It wasnt even beer, it was just raining loads so it got soaked in my pocket

So i have put it in dry rice, and well it booted up but the touch screen was unresponsive, and so was the fingerprint sensor leaving me with no way to actually use any of the phones features, i think there is a tiny bit of water left so im going to stick it in rice a bit longer but try and get the screen repaired if that doesnt help,
Is there anyway i can access the stuff on my phone using the usb connection maybe?
Sorry to hear about your phone. My son got pushed into a swimming pool with his Atrix in his pocket. It is fully functional today.
What we did.
Rice and a warm spot. Not for hours... It took a whole week before everything straightened out. There was an issue with the sim and sd card readers, but nothing an emery board didn't fix.
First mistake, you turned (tried to) it on. Second mistake...........you turned it on too soon after putting it in rice.
One day in dry rice is not enough. If you read guides about water damage you will see that you really should have the phone in dry ice for 5 days. Never ever plug it into the charger or turn it on before you do this. Only takes one wee drop of liquid to short something out.
Next, you should strip the phone down and clean everything internally to make sure you will not suffer from oxidation and corrosion in the future. Many phones will work after being in dry rice, only to succumb to corrosion after a few weeks or months because all the connectors inside became oxidized.
In short, water damage is horrible, but there are many guides on the internet specific to this outside of XDA which can help you. The iPhone water damage guides are especially useful, even though the hardware is different. The concept is exactly the same.
First rule is always do not attempt to turn the phone on, and do not plug into a charger.

Hope this helps, the phone that I mentioned, was turned on immediately after getting wet. His girlfriend was the smart one and pulled the battery for him.
We sat it in the rice and checked it every day by turning it on. (I am in no way recommending this btw, simply reporting an experience.). Each day it seems like it got better and better. The last two days everything was working, but there was still evidence of moisture on the screen. So we baked it for a few extra days. I did have an advantage over you. The outside temp was 100 plus and I sat his, in that bag of rice, on the hood of a red car everyday for most of the afternoon. It will most likely take longer with a cooler temp to work with.
We may have been 'lucky'. But this is so you know that there is a great chance that everything will be fine.
well, an update on my girlfriend's PUKE phone:
The day I posted that was I think thursday, we let is sit all thursday- friday- saturday. On sunday (around noon) she couldnt handle the Nokia 3360 any longer. When she left for her "mani/pedi", I sat down with the poor phone. After a little cleaning of contacts and such I was able to get it to boot and come up. When she got home it was up and going. She was thrilled and I got a "reward".
She used it all Sunday and today until the insurance joint came in. The only thing that didnt totally dry was the screen. It looked like pure hell, but worked. She said anythign was etter than the old green screen nokia
PS- she had tried to turn it on friday and got a "Modem Failed to Initialize: Starting RSD". Sunday it worked fine.

I've heard up to a week but a couple days will probably work. I would probably just use a can of compressed air. Hair dryers can create enough heat to loosen the adhesive for screens on phones. Maybe place it near a vent or put it on a window sill with sunlight?

Okay....i have a black international galaxy s II converted to white and i dropped it in the water last night I was fairly intoxicated and my friend immediately helped me put it in a bowl of rice battery out etc....I left it like that overnight then tried to turn the phone on (not smart)wasn't turning on.....i came to my senses and disassembled the phone right away this morning and saw it was still a bit wet, immediately stuck it in the bowl of rice.
What it's chances at survival?? lol it was legit in water submerged for a only 1 sec if anything, i immediately snatched it out and saw that it was still turning on etc...
Also, what are warranty options? You think they'd know it was water damage after i put it back together? I also have a custom ROM and kernel and stuff but if it doesn't turn on would they be able to find out?
Hopefully the bowl of rice fixes it -.- I've had the phone for maybe like 1 month tops

Edit: fully functional luckily, no water damage, no eroding, litmus indicator is still fine and didn't change colors to indicate water damage. Close call but 100% perfect
The prognosis is not good. Warranty does not cover water damage unless you have insurance on the device. Sorry, I hope I'm mistaken for your sake!

blahhh......it doesn't look like theres any water damage since i have a feeling the rice soaked a lot of water initially.
lol been going all over the web watching youtube videos etc....seeing ppl freaking submerge their galaxy s II and it still working damn.
Gonna leave it in the rice for another like 2 hrs probably then see how it does, was barely any water when disassembled, droplet here and there but that doesn't mean jack sh*t.

I would try someone's battery to see if it is still working in a couple of days.
It's not the amount of water, it's where it gets to - even a single droplet can kill a device if it shorts the right (or wrong) circuits.
Also even if it's completely dry and left in rice for a month you probably can't warranty it as there's water sensitive tabs all over modern smartphones. On the battery, usually near the headphones jack and others inside.

Good thing i have my OEM battery and an extra anker 1900. The first anker was in the phone so if thats messed up, I have 2 other batteries to try.
Damn 2 days -.- I'm probably gonna end up trying it tonight or something lol. Im in college and flying home on tuesday so i kinda need to find out if it'll work or not. Thanks for the help.
But damn, all those survival stores of the galaxy s II is making me both sad cuz if mine doesn't work, how the hell did theirs survive and hopeful it may work. Lol some dude had his in a full cycle washing machine, left the phone in rice for 7 days and it worked

i've heard a hair dryer is a bad idea, reading about it on the webs. Apparently it messes with the circuit boards or w/e......air dry is the best, i just let it sit in rice for a bit longer, pretty confident all of it is dry since i took the phone apart and let it sit in the rice.
Running it now and everything is working perfectly.
Last week, my friend's EVO 3D was water damaged. He was going to throw it out but I offered him $25 for it and he gave it to me. When I try turning it on, it vibrates, the buttons at the bottom light up but the screen doesn't seem to turn on. Is there any chance of fixing it?
Hmm well it might be but It's hard to tell if the board got damaged or just the screen. If u really want to fix it buy one off eBay or Craigslist with a broken screen and swap internals. At least that's what I'd do

^^ awesome idea forgot to mention that rice is like a miracle worker I've saved many a phone that have taken full swims just by throwing them in a bag of rice for a couple days

there is a chance. but probably would require an extensive knowledge of circuitry and i'm guessing since you don't know where to even start... probably not going to happen. lol

Mine survived being totally submerged in water when it fell in a puddle. at first the screen didn't work at all, then it flickered, then it had some lines on the screen, then after one day it was fully functional in every aspect haha, all I did was put it in rice, and all is well... Now I just wish I had waited to file an insurance claim, as now I'm stuck with a refurbished with 1.5

It's too late now to do the rice trick. If there was water on the board and the user tried to turn it on, the damage has already been done and chips were probably fried.

the "with caution" part, here, should simply be don't turn it on at all. turning it on with water or moisture still present internally could damage it beyond repair (if that isn't the case already).
pull the battery out, and throw it in a very large, sealed Ziploc, bag of rice for a few days, maybe even longer - and cross your fingers. if it doesn't work after that. I wouldn't put anymore time and certainly not anymore money into it.
and yes it was worth a shot for only 25 bucks, for sure. I would have given it a try for that price.
I had a HD2 with the same problem. your screwed dude. Sorry. No amount rice is going to save that phone.
Yep, I think the only thing that saved mine, when it was totally submerged, is that the battery was completely dead, so nothing got power.

Last week, my friend's EVO 3D was water damaged. He was going to throw it out but I offered him $25 for it and he gave it to me. When I try turning it on, it vibrates, the buttons at the bottom light up but the screen doesn't seem to turn on. Is there any chance of fixing it?

Take the phone apart and try this, with just the board, an alcohol (as pure as you can get) soak for 2-5mins then air dry (let sit for 1-2hours). Reassemble and test. As the alcohol evaporates, it extracts water out of the circuitry. But, as it has been mentioned, powering it on prior to a full dry may have already fried it.

Theres no science behind water damage, if you've turned it on already then it's too late for any measures to be taken.
In future, if you drop it in water, remove it straight away, remove everything from the phone, try to get as much water out as you can, then pop it in a bowl of dry rice for as long as you can, months would be best, simply assume that the phone is gone and do not switch it on until you can assure that it is completely dry, any other measures you can take seldom work but some have had results, the rice trick is as good as it gets tbh.
Avoid water like the plague with your phone.

So I bought the HTC Evo 3D and had it for about 20 hours before I drowned it in a cup of tea (yes I was drunk) where it sat for a couple of minutes before it was discovered. As soon as it was discovered, I turned it off and removed the battery. It sat over night band in the morning I turned it back on and it works. But I immediately realized that there was still water at the bottom of the screen. I again turned it off and removed the battery and it has been sitting in rice for over a week. There is still water at the bottom of the screen! I'm so frustrated! I don't have a cell phone repair place where I live and I have no experience with working on cell phones. I have even tried using a blow dryer a little but am worried that the heat will harm the screen. My sister suggested just trying to used the phone and the heat from the phone working would evaporate the left over water but I am also afraid of frying things too. Any suggestions???
You turned it on while it was still wet. It's done for. Time for a new phone.
Sugar or colorants that were in the tea could have made that mark on the bottom of the screen
Anyway, i really don't think is there anything you can do.

Exactly. Even if you get all the water out, you likely fried the board somewhere. If you still want an evo 3d, they are pretty old now, you should be able to get one on ebay for under 50 bucks.
You could attempt to take your phone apart and clean all the internals with rubbing alcohol but chances are your phone is past-out for ever
(Don't ask me for help as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh! )
Today i went swimming an my kid took off with my phone an it went into the pool. I was told it was water proof an when i pool it out the phone turns gray an powers off.. ive gotten it wet before by accident an it was just fine.. i have it in rice now but im asking is it a goner?
Could be. They are not waterproof, they are splash resistant. Still wish it's only a minor incident

The best way at least that i can think of is to manually disassemble the phone and wipe it to dry by yourself,rise wont make it dry,try to power on the phone in a week or so,when the phone is dry.

Actually rice is a natural absorbent, it can in fact, save your phone as it has with my iPod Touch 32gb, though not a razr, it has all similar mobile device components inside, and I didn't even take it apart, left it in a Tupperware full of rice for a few days, after I used a good hair-dryer to evaporate the large stuff. We're still talking about a non-serviceable internal battery (just like our Droid RAZR).
Even though it didn't properly start-up within a day after leaving it in the rice for a few days, the darn thing started right up as if right out of the box about a week later.
So lesson learned, technology is amazing, unpredictable, and very servicable, no matter what.
Though, the idea of taking it apart is a good one because by having water damage your warranty is voided atm.

Taking it apart will not stop the warranty from being voided. There is a water sensor that was activated the moment it got wet and cannot be returned to its original state.
Rice only gets rid of humidity, corrosion will start anyway. It WILL destroy the phone sooner or later.

yeah happened to my girlfriend evo 3d wouldnt charge after awhile... im really not good with taking things apart.. lol also i tried pluging it in it went to the charging part when it boots up with charger, but wouldnt power on fully.. an eventually started rebooting over n over so back in rice for couple days i guess hope i didnt fry it...

There is a 'sonic' bath or somethiing like that that you can perform that is supopsed to get rid of corosion, but you would have to find someone with equipment to do that. Assuming of course that connecting it to the charger did not fry it.

Chlorine should dissipate but you could have problems if you tried charging prior to the phone being fully dry, or if the btty was left in for too long. Alcohol is usually used to clean electronics but I forgot what type doesn't leave a residue.
The rice bath for a couple of days should dry the phone (alcohol also helps to dry the phone), but I would be concerned about btty damage. The content of the btty could have leaked.

i remember using rubbing alcohol, aka methanol should work. try taking a look at XDA tv. there was one instance the guy was *****ing about the Razr not having a removable battery and he opened his galaxy nexus and dipped it in methanol

if you do take it apart pick up some Denatured Alcohol from a Home Depot type store and use that to clean the inside. It will help prevent corrosion and it is perfectly safe to use on any part of the phone.
My friend had the same thing happen, he took off the back took out only the battery, then grabbed alcohol 99% and distilled water, made a 50/50 solution and put it in a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for like 30 min, then in a bag of silica gell (those tiny paper bags that say to not eat) Left it there for 2 days, works just fine.
Rice fixed it two days open sd card slot n it working like a charm
