Alternative SMS app besides GOsms & handcent? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Gosms has really taken a direction i do not like, no longer allowing you to locally backup sms and now wanting to charge to backup your private box.
It's there another SMS app that has comparable features to GOSMS (i.e. lockable private box, great ics or dark themes)

I am in the same boat. I was getting a feeling that they were becoming too large to not start charging for some aspects at least. I am back on default, sadly. :/ Sorry I can't help more. I did, however, like messaging 7 or something like that. It mimics the messaging ui on wp7 which i like but may not be for all. Give it a looksee

I switched to Chomp... has basically the same features as GoSMS.

I dumped GO SMS about a year ago when I found they were debugging nonsense HUNDREDS of times on my phone. They never would explain why they had done that, I suspect they quietly fixed it in an update.
Used Handcent since. What's wrong with Handcent? Or even stock, the stock messaging app isn't bad, unless you need bling..

i guess i liked gosms due to a couple features, they had nice a nice solid black / blue theme that i loved. also they had the private box which required a password to open just that box.
maybe someone knows a good privacy inbox sorta app?

A quick Google search showed this as the first hit. There may be others.

So it seems like a good market for a good dev or two to make a good sms program. Honestly i wouldn't mind paying $5 for a good sms app that is like gosms

Just for the record, the above url is now invalid and can be removed.

Thread is a year old. It was dead and buried. I bet if you check out other year old threads you will find dead links too.

Handcent SMS removed from market

Anyone know why?
I just downloaded it yesterday.. I just checked the market you rite not there

That's strange...
It is still in the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&hl=en
But it says it is incompatible with the Evo 4G and 3D. IDK about other phones. Maybe this was a mistake on their part?
Hopefully its some sort of maintenance or maybe some other big application purchased them. there should be word on it at some point
I know version 4.0 was supposed to come out soon.
Maybe they're renaming the app?
Just found this out too. Just flashed a new ROM and it wasn't listed. All the font/language packs are there, just not the app. Got an SGS2. I see it's in a couple other markets, but not the Android Market. Going to give Go SMS a whirl. Saw a few threads asking which is better and overwhelming response was Go SMS.
I noticed this earlier this evening... Hows Go SMS workin out for ya?
ive been using go sms for about a month and like it better than handcent, seems faster to me.
Think Ill give it a go and see how i like it...
You can always grab it from the dev's website.

Ive used Go SMS since 3vo came out and i love it... when it was unlocked, i have been flashing every week and love how GOSMS has an SMS backup feature
My biggest problem is when Im in the Gallery and want to attach a picture to a text, when I hit share, it rarely allows me to go to the stock messaging app. I vaguely remember that I could do that every time with Handcent... Does Go SMS show up when you click share on a picture?

GOsms is a lot better, I used to use handcent until I was shown GOsms, it's a lot better in my opinion.
I prefer Handcent because of the privacy features. I haven't found another app that offers the breadth of their privacy services.
Maybe it was removed due to some of the voicemail issues they were having. A friend of mine used to always complain that people would bring their phones in complaining about visual voicemail and it was always due to the Handcent app.
This is the email I got back from them this morning
"sorry, this is a temp issue ,we are contacting google ,it may fix in 3 days, now ,you can download from www.handcent.com temp, hope we can get response from google ASAP"

I've been using GO SMS & Launcher for over 6months. 1st on my EVO now on 3D. I love it.
Eh, I tried both, I still love hand cent much more.
I have handcent
I couldn't find Handcent on the market either so I used a backup I had on my SD card with Titanium Backup and it works perfectly...

[Q] texting app crapware

Hi,
Please tell me how to get rid of the god-awful slow texting app that comes with this phone, and replace it with the stock android texting app.
Thanks!
Are you referring to the AT&T messages app? 'Cause the SMS app that comes stock works fine for me :/
Stock messages app works fine for me. If you have root you may be able to find differnt message apps, but my first suggestion is to give handcent a try as it is my go to sms app for when I'm having issues with cusom ROMs being buggy with mms. Its got a threaded look to it, much like iphone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDIxMiwiY29tLmhhbmRjZW50Lm5leHRzbXMiXQ..
It also has font packs and other stuff on the app store.

I far prefer GO SMS Pro, love the interface and features, but with all the third-party SMS apps I have an issue of double and triple texts being sent to people. I agree the Samsung SMS app is painfully slow. I hate using it, but it's my only choice because it doesn't send out duplicate texts. :/

Thats very odd, I've never got complaint of this. Have you googled the issue to see if there is a known solution or work around? As common as these apps are you can't possibly be the only one misfortunate enough to experience this. I have had issues in the past getting numerous notifications despite turning native notifications off for SMS, but thats an entirely different issue.
How do i replace the Samsung message app with the vanilla android one? The Samsung one is slow and is a failed attempt at copying iphone. The keyboard even blocks the send button!

Mostly I see people on ICS complaining about this issue, but there are several people on GB complaining about it as well, for both GO SMS and Handcent and a few others on Google Play.
I had the duplicate notification issue with Handcent - even though I had disabled notifications for the stock app AND frozen it. Didn't have that problem with GO SMS. Had an odd problem when I tried Chomp SMS, where all incoming messages were anonymous and upon trying to view them, the message couldn't be found. That even happened in the stock app, so long as I had Chomp installed. Uninstalling fixed that issue immediately.
But so far as I can tell, some people just have the problem, and most don't. I have yet to see a reply from any of the devs about the issue. I've tried completely resetting the phone to factory spec but I still got the duplicate message issue.
I really, REALLY want to use GO SMS. Although something else I noticed is that some people's messages were being sent to the wrong contacts... Perhaps I'll try the vanilla Android apk...
How do you try the vanilla android apk?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
This is the ics messenger app, you can try it without needing root.

Thanks but I don't really want a third party version with ads. I don't get it...isn't there a plain messaging app that comes with android (like what was on the nexus one), or is it proprietary to every device? It seems like this shouldn't be such a difficult thing to install instead of the crappy samsung one. Am I missing something?
i'm surprised. the sms app is not bad i'm the note. I've seen worse. (though i am using the rogers version)
I'm coming from a rooted Inspire 4G (cyanogen) and I've noticed that the texting on the Samsung Messaging app is a bit sluggish. And some keys don't respond to my fast fingers.. Yet the app itself runs very fast (ie open app, open threads, go back, etc).
One thing I did was uninstall Swype through Titanium and I think I've noticed a difference in the keyboard speed. It may just be my imagination though

I'm using go SMS, no issues..as long as I leave stock installed and not frozen..if I do..no mms messages

Messaging app slows phone to a crawl?

My upfront apologies if this has been posted already - I'm finding that with stock messaging app (which stinks) when a message is received the whole phone essential locks up. It comes back but it just sits there. Is this the messaging app or something else? Better off doing it thru data via Google voice? Go to different SMS app? If so which one do people reccomend? Thanks!

+1 on go sms pro
been using sms pro for over a yr and got no issues with it...you could even customize and download themes..its the best so far
Funny, I was here looking for something else, but a friend called me 5 minutes ago screaming that she cannot send text. Told her to delete ALL of the old one's she did not need. Just text me and asked me did I receive it?
Pot calling the kettle black, my phone was running like crap with stock everything. I deleted all my old text, dumped some pictures I was playing with camera with that I will never upload, blew away junk e-mails.......Phone is new!

Favorite messaging app?

Wondering what messaging apps all of you are using.. and if you have any recommendations.
I absolutely love the stock app aside from two major faults: disappearing keyboard/lockup on each sent message, and no quick reply in notification drawer. But I really love the look and layout of it otherwise.
I've tried basically every other messaging app and didn't quite love any of them. GoSMS and Textra I like.. but don't really like how they handle notifications. I wish textra had a regular quick reply option.
Then I tried a few of the AOSP ones, which seem to have all the features down, but they're just plain ugly. Idk what it is.. they're just very big and clunky looking.
Any suggestions? Can't seem to find a simple and elegant one that also has the features down. I might give textra another shot and see if I can't come around to liking their notification system.
Chomp, GoSMS & Handcent are all great options. (I'm currently using Go)
tap'n on my S5
I used Handcent in my Evo 4g LTE. I like it better than all the other ones I tried after modifying the style to suite my needs. But the stock HTC message app on this ATT One works great for me. At this time I am running more stock than ever before. I have not even bothered to root since I ran the 4.4.3 RUU since everything works so well already...

I haven't had any such issue (disappearing keyboard/lockup) on the stock Messaging app, and quite happy with it. Although I've never really liked or used "quick reply" type features.
In the past when I didn't like the stock app, I used Chomp SMS. Chomp is very customizable (you can make it look practically however you want) and has quick reply (although this appears as a popup, not in the notification drawer).
I prefer Textra, but I had a problem with it failing to send after a while, so I ended up going back to stock. There is another thread around here where the same issue was noted in Chomp as well, so it seems that it may be an issue with the OS itself.

I love Textra. and i had problems with it sending stuff to but i fixed it. I had to manually configure the app APN to match the network APN that is in my phone. after i did that, it works wonderfully now.
I use 8sms. I am planning on using the stock sms app.

Changing the "recent contacts" messaging app when sharing. (cross post)

There is a REALLY cool feature I'd like to be able to utilize where the G4 pulls up your most recent contacts when you start to share something.
*see attached image* (names and numbers have been edited out for privacy reasons)
Only problem is, that even though my default messaging app is Next SMS if I select one of these recent contacts at the top. It still opens up "messaging" to send the message. Which actually is very limiting because it doesn't like not being default with MMS's.
Is there an easy way to change that behavior?
Thanks,
Gilligan
The app has to be made To use that function. It is part of stock Android. All my messaging apps use it. I can't say about handcent as I stopped using them a few years ago when the company when down hill and the app went to garbage.

What do you recommend and why it over Handcent? I'm not married to Handcent, but it does ok by my books. I don't really venture out and try other apps either.

Handcent is known for not delivering messages. Along with other huge issues. I use YAATA myself or textra. Both work wonderfully. I choice YAATA over textra so I can hide that God awful material design. Just avoid Go sms at all costs.

Yeah unless you ran a logcat or people contacted you every time you didn't reply then you really wouldn't know. I used to use handcent until people started getting mad I wasn't replying. Then I looked into it and saw it was failing. It was a great app until it was sold to a China based company.
So, how do you turn off the row for messaging if you have a different app (YAATA) doing the messaging for you now?

It should auto replace the normal messaging.
As you can see from my SS
Hmmm.. mine is acting differently. I has two rows. One replaced, one didn't.
As you can see here, top row is YAATA, bottom is still "Messaging".
The more you use it the less they will be there. If you have root you could always freeze it or disable it. It could also be the device. I know some apps are making it annoying to replace the stock apps. Like Samsung devices.
