Help please! Unique problem!!! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to flash my vibrant to stock, but my laptop says usb unrecognized. This causes Odin not to detect my vibrant in download mode. I have downloaded all drivers including nexus drivers, but still same error usb unrecognized. I have then start on switching data cables including the stock data cables but the errors remain the same. I have tried on different computers and different windows, nothing working its the same errors on all computers. I have messed up by formatting everything in the Vibrant, now it boot loops to Vibrant logo. I can get into download mode normal but I cant get into CWM or any recovery mode, its probably because I have formatted the whole phone. When the phone is off, I plugged in the micro USB to the phone from the laptop, all it shows is the white lines that are in circler motions and then freezes. Weird my laptop still detects it as a USB unrecognized. As the phone is plugged in to the laptop I try taking the battery out and my phone is still on with the frozen screen of those white lines in circler Motions. Can anyone help me, or at least explain to me what the problem may be? My thoughts is that it may be a hardware problem. If so can anyone provide me some schematics on the USB portion? I hope we can bring some light on this problem. Giving it to T-Mobile is not an option. I have dealt with many problems and solved it, but this is one problem that keeps me stomp in my own tracks.
You can give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, he will be able to eat for a lifetime!

Ok, so I am in a similar situation as yourself. I bought another Vibrant that was stuck on the bootloader screen. I gets into DL mode just fine, however Odin doesn't recognize it. I have uninstalled, reinstalled the drivers, used Nexus S and GNex drivers, 4 cords and 3ports and still no joy. My daily driver Vibe is like a mid-town flasher and is seen all over the place. So this leads me to believe that it is not driver/SW related but rather HW realted for me.
I think that my next step is to clean the USB ports on the phone and see if that works. If not, then I'll have to probably crack her open and clean there. I have another laptop that is using WinXP, so I might give that a try since nothing Samsung has ever been installed on it.
Keep me up to date with your findings and I will do the same with mine. Clearly I am not a noob but now this is just making me mad. Why one phone works/is seen and not the other. Common denomitator has to be HW.

I agree with you, it may be a HW issue. I have tried connecting other phones to my laptop and it reads it just fine, but for my vibrant no success. Im gonna go ahead and actally open it up and check on some componets, i have a feeling that it may have burnt one of the componets due to over charge. Ill get back with you on my findings. Keep me updated on your progress.

Before you open her up, have you tried cleaning the metal contacts inside the USB on the phone? I am at work not, so I can't try anything, but I would check that before opening. Might just need to be cleaned.

yes i've tried. I used a Q-tip and some alcohol, still same problems.

Update: Nothing!! How about you?
I have tried un/reinstalling the drivers, Odin v1.8, 1.3 and 1.0, about 4-5 cables and all 3 ports. I have cleaned the USB with alcohol and at this point am at a slight loss. The phone boots into DLmode and charges fine, so I don't think it is a faulty USB port. I cannot get into any recovery or ROM boot. All I have is DLmode and the GB bl screen. No kernel or ROM splash.

Gasp! I'm in a similar boat guys. My phone charges fine, and all my drivers are working and up to date...I can get into DL mode and all that jazz...phone even boots up and works! (fortunately)...but no dice on it being recognized by my or any computer. Glancing into the port, it looks like there may be some corrosion on the left hand side of the port, or some sort of damage...can't really tell without a proper magnifying glass. but it does look damaged or at least irregular. I've been reading around, and cleaning sounds like a potential solution...I've no idea how you guys are cleaning with giant q-tips lol but hopefully I can figure that one out also and give it a whirl xD But in the mean time, I sure hope somebody can come to the rescue

I don't know if this can help you guys, but this is how i hard bricked my vibrant few months ago. I get into download mode trying to get back to stock from ICS and my computer didn't recognize my phone....after a couple of hours my phone was completely dead and after a few days of research i brought it back to life using the unbrickable mod. What i'm thinking now is to use the Unbrickable Resurrector but you will need Linux...it always worked for me but i'm not sure if you need the unbrickable mod already applied. However i think if you have Linux installed you can have a try. Here is the link for the unbrickable resurrector http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17135277#post17135277

Any one having problems with their pc recognizing thier fascinate after flashing AOKP?
I can charge but not get it to recognize the phone.
I have tried different cables and ports on the pc.

Anyone have a good set of windows 7 drivers that work for AOKP ICS roms?

Got a good working link to just the drivers and not the sdk? It would be much appreciated. Also thanks for your work on all the different roms...so nice to have the choice. I feel the best thing about android is choice!

Nada.
I plug the phone in and I get nothing. It doesn't even pop up detecting device down by the notification area of windows... I tried toggling in glitch between mtp and usb mass storage.
I even uninstalled all the drivers, installed the android dev kit and tried that.

This may sound silly, but happens to me a lot, try "jiggeling" cable were it plugs into phone. Seriously, sometimes its just not connecting. I gave this advice to many and it does work. No idea why.

Maybe not entirely related.. But i had pageonce locked to only work on my device. Have flashed hundreds of times with no issue. Until aokpm4. Pageonce servers kept nuking my credentials every time i restored data. Their support said my device id was changed and not showing as my phone anymore. Kinda weird

Try navigating to the USB device in Device Manager and uninstalling the drivers. Then disconnect/reconnect it, sometimes this clears up issues.

I finally remembered that i have two laptops in the house and grabbed them and tried to get it hooked up to one of those...no dice. I'm thinking possibly something wrong with the data pins on the usb connector of my phone.
I'm paranoid about flashing anything because if something goes wrong I wouldn't be able to odin it and start over again...
I guess i just need to relax and enjoy the phone the way it is until may...then go buy something brand new and flash the hell out of that...
Thanks for all your help and work!

I had cleaned the pins with rubbing alcohol, a bit of felt and a toothpick (too small for a qtip) no dice.
Then yesterday evening i plugged into the computer to charge rather than walking to the other room to get my charger and i heard the Da dum of it recognizing my phone...it installed it and up pops the device...
I think my phone is like a crazy girlfriend...she is mean as hell to you all the time then when you get ready to dump her she decides to be nice and make you feel guilty you though about ditching her.

[Q] I777 No longer able to mounted to PC...

My I777 has been acting up lately, and now I'm out of options and wondering what my next move should be.
For several days when I'd connect the phone to the PC via USB, it started saying "this device can perform faster when on a USB 2.0 port..." - which, my ports ARE 2.0.. transfers were taking forever. Now, anytime I plug it in it simply says "USB Device not recognized" - I've tried the OEM cable, the plethora of other cables, 4 different PC's... *ALL* have the same result.
My concern is with a custom ROM on it and no way to get any PC to recognize the phone to get it back to root - how should I proceed from here for warranty purposes? I've only had it since March - just wondering what's gonna happen at this point - or is this even fixable? All the threads I've seen say it needs replaced... but with no way to unroot, etc., I'm just unsure how this is gonna go.
Thanks for any advice.

Absolutely NOT.
This is a situation that's been coming over a period of time, starting with the inability to see it as a USB 2.0 device when initially plugged in, and now has deteriorated to the point that it can't even be seen.

Yeah, I sure did - nothing. Even in recovery, it won't "mount" usb there either.
Samsung's have a crappy USB port. It fails sometimes. You have a hard time charging at all?
But like I stated above, even without a computer connection you can get Mobile Odin and flash back to stock, as long as your rooted.
I'm having this same issue. I just got the phone earlier this week and I am unable to get bit connected to my pc to root or Odin. I have installed and uninstalled Kies multiple times on two different computers, tries different ports, and checked if the cable worked by using another phone (PC recognized without an issue). I get the USB not recognized or the 2.0 USB message. If I enable debugging, I can connect regularly and transfer files through windows explorer. But if I use USB debugging off, then nothing will work. I've tried using odin and it will just get stuck at setup connection or cache.img and then I'd have to pull the device. I've tries updating through Kies when it shows the USB 2.0 message but once the S2 hits download mode then the computer stops recognizing it. I have also tried installing the i777 drovers on the Samsung website and its still a no go. Does anyone know how to fix this? Its not rooted so mobile Odin won't help me now.

It is the OEM cable that came with my Samsung Infuse. It worked with the T989 3 days ago and it's not working with my i777. Its strange because I tried it with my infuse again and I am able to Odin just fine. Could it really be an issue with my USB or will it be a PCB issue? I would rather or not disassemble my phone if it is a PCB issue. Should be able to do a warranty exchange though.

I hate to break it to you brother but it's damn near impossible to determine what the actual culprit could be, your best best is to try each and every single different thing I've listed. The end result being changing the PCB which one, isn't that hard, and two, is very cheap the only problem is waiting for the board to come in the mail.

I've soft bricked my phone 2 times with this problem and it takes hours to get Odin to pick up my phone.

Its strange because when I enable USB debugging, I can get a "USB connection" on the phone and data transfers fine. But when I turn it off, I get a "MTP connection" and sometimes it'll connect (5% of the time) and allow me to transfer data. But when lies tries to update when that mtp connection is active, it'll hang when the phone goes into download mode. Did you have this same issue?

I f you're able to transfer files via mass storage with USB debugging enabled then you can (most likely) rule out hardware failure on your phone.
If anything this sounds like a driver issue on the cpmputer. Are you running windows? If so remove and reinstall the drivers for your phone.
Still think its hardware.
I can connect 1/100 of the times I'm plugged into a computer. Its not a driver issue because my girlfriend has an i777 as well and no problems for her connecting at all.
Its not ROM related because I have this problem with all ROMs.

Does that apply to ums as well? From his description he can connect in ums just fine. Its only mtp that's giving him problems. In his case, with the problem only being in one connection mode, it leads me to think drivers. In your case, tested against another s2 I'd say hardware.
Just tried using a Motorola cable and a third PC and my chances of connection increased to about 15-20%. Kies and Odin failed on me a few times just like I had described before. But eventually Odin was able to flash okay. Finally on ICS on my i777! I think I'll stay on stock since I'd rather not go USB and PC hunting to flash stock if anything goes wrong.

[Q] USB port replacement [Bell][i757m]

Hi all. I couldn't find a specific forum for my SII HD LTE (Bell Canada version - i757m) so I'm posting in here with hopes that someone can help me out.
My USB port appears to be toast. The phone will charge, but it not recognized by any computer I plug it in to. I've tested in with Odin on two machines with several cables in download mode, USB debugging mode with the SDK, and mass storage mode. The fact that it won't even get detected in download mode leads me to believe that it's a hardware issue. Is this common?
Edit: Tried to post a link but I'm too much of an XDA posting noob to do so (<10 posts)
Is this the same device / would it be compatible? It's only 10 bucks but I'd like to know if there is anything else I can try or any known issues / fixes for this problem.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks.
Have you tried to clean the port. That's a problem. Or mobile Odin if you want to flash some thing. Have you tried dif version of Odin?

I've tried cleaning the port with a clean dry toothbrush as suggested for some other models without any luck. I've also used a version of Odin that I know worked on the phone a month or so ago so there's definitely something wrong on the phone's end of things. Since it's failing to get detected in download mode (before anything is really loaded) I'm almost positive it's a hardware problem - unless there is some obscure software issue that may be causing this.
I'm not using any custom ROMs at the moment and it just stopped working out of the blue.
Fairly certain I'm going to have to replace the actual hardware piece. I looked in it with a flashlight and everything looks clear / contacts are all in-place so I'm guessing something may have fried on the pcb that it's attached to. Possibly a short or something?
I've run into the identical problem.
It's quite an issue actually, because the stock experience is becoming really unbearable, and I can't find a way to root or install a custom Rom without USB.
Any solution?
I actually sourced the part for about 10 bucks on Ebay. Just arrived a few days ago. It includes the whole circuit board, ribbon cable, and USB plug. There's gonna be some disassembly required (obviously) but after testing every software solution in the book, cleaning the ever living crap out of it, and trying four different cables on multiple PCs, I'm positive the USB port / attached hardware bit the dust.
I'll post my results when I get around to putting the thing in.

[Q] i9300 problem with usb connectivity

i have a sgs3 i9300. i recently flashed the stock MJ9 android 4.3 firmware to it and it was working fine till 3 days ago when it started to show driving mode sign and then i flashed the rom again 2 or 3 times i wiped user data and now the driving mode sign is gone but i cannot connect the phone to the computer, when i connect it nothing happens, on mobile or computer. nothing. (no usb charging or mass storage or any sounds or anything) however i can charge it using usb charger that came with it and strangely i can even use the phone in download mode with computer to flash it using odin. i read somewhere that its not a hardware issue so im really looking forward to some help here. thanks

searched all over xda. tried all the things suggested (including the recovery firmware). still things remain the same. i still can flash it in download mode. but i cant charge it or anything. im sure its a software problem not a hardware problem. some serious help is required here

Would suggest you uninstall Kies if you have it then download the new version (Kies for non Android 4.3 or Kies 3 for Android 4.3) from here Kies this will re-install the new drivers, re-boot your PC then plug your phone into your PC and you should get the message installing drivers.
Don't let Kies run at the same time as Odin otherwise it wont work but I guess you probably know that.

Have you tried different USB ports on the PC, there have been reports before that for some reason the port people normally use stops working and by switching to another USB port it works
Forgot to say if not already tried, turn off the phone pull the battery leave for a minute or two, replace the battery and reboot then try to connect it.

Not having much luck are you, one last thing I have read before is using a pin or cocktail stick (you may need a magnifying glass as well) to gently clean the USB port on the phone and the cable, remove the battery first, but be careful you don't actually damage anything, that's why you need to be gentle with it.
Can you flash via ODIN successfully but phone not recognised by Windows??? Sounds like not all pins connecting properly. Clean connector VERY carefully...

i used a very sharp pin to clean the port on phone. did clean a bit, and had a bit of success. i cud charge my phone with the connector connected at a certain angle. if i wud touch it it would stop charging. but that went on for like 40 minutes and then it stopped working any ideas on how can i clean it? if i open the phone will i be able to clean it easily?

Never actually had to do it, only read what others have done, maybe an old dry toothbrush would do it as ling as you remember the gentle bit, if the pin did help then this could solve the problem for you it may simply be dust or dirt on the connections.
Would do both the phone and the cable end, not easy but worth a try as its free.

Omate Truesmart "USB Device Not Recognized"

Hi everyone, so I have a 1GB/8GB Omate Truesmart that has been awesome. After having the Imperium Operative ROM on it and realizing the sensors were not working, I decided to try and revert back to the stock firmware. However, that's where the trouble started. My cradle wasn't working properly during the process and stopped in the middle of it, and now I can't even boot my watch on (unless there's some alternative way). On top of that, anytime I try to connect it to any of my USB ports, it keeps saying on my Windows 7 laptop that the USB device is not recognized, and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers again.
So, if anyone can please help me and guide me in "unbricking" the watch and just being able to have my laptop recognize it so I can actually do the stock firmware process, I'd be really grateful. Thanks a lot!
You used Sp flash tool correct? I'd suggest reading the unbricking guide first but answer these first:
What color was the progress bar when it stopped?
Have you tried a different port?
Have you pulled the battery yet?

Actually fixed it!

Hey kurunosan, so I did follow the unbricking guide exactly, but because my cradle is a little bit finicky (the microUSB has to be plugged into it in an exact position for it to be read by the laptop), it had messed up during the unbricking process and therefore, caused it to be "bricked". To answer your questions though, the color of the progress bar was yellow, I tried all the different ports around my laptop, as well as my work laptop. And I wasn't able to pull the battery because I haven't been able to unscrew the back yet (I blame those crazy small screws lol).
BUT, I was finally able to fix the drivers issue and my watch was recognized by my laptop finally. If I have time later in the next day or two, I'll try and make a guide about it if something like that happens to anyone. Or if anyone is curious or has had it happen to them, you can feel free to PM me.
I'm just glad that my TrueSmart is finally functional again!

The good news for you is that because it was only yellow, your watch was just stuck in preloader mode and you hadn't fully bricked it.
If you disconnected it while the progress bar was purple, you'd be in some serious trouble.
I'm very familiar with preloader and it's such a pain in the ass when the drivers do gymnastics and switch ports or flat out don't work.

Oh gotcha, did not know that about the preloader. Well, good thing that was the only case then!
I have had a similar experience with my Truesmart. I originally tried to apply Lokifish's Root + Enhanced Security patch. This unfortunately failed for some reason and resulted in me not having root or any USB functionaility.
So I went through the process of putting the watch back to stock. I followed the process to the letter, but something went wrong during the process and it ended up with SPTools giving up (looking at the logs it looks like it lost USB connectivity - attached). Now the watch seems to be bricked. I have attempted the process again but SPTools is not detecting anything.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated....I am a very sad bunny at the moment :crying:
I would prefer to not have to remove the battery (for obvious reasons), but will do if there is no other way round it.

The patch will tell you if there's an error. It will show the command with the word "failed".
Regarding SPTools attempt to return to stock. In looking at the log it was continuously connecting and disconnecting which usually demotes either a driver, dock or USB issue. It is most likely in a bootloader mode but locked up. I suggest you leave the TS alone for a few hours or possibly overnight and attempt to flash it again.
Unfortunately you have given my very little to go on so other than general fixes there's not much I can tell you. In the future if you run into any issues flashing anything or running scripts it is best to post in that projects support thread and wait for help.
The log clearly shows multiple disconnects, probably because of a bad query. I suggest the same thing Loki did.
