Just got my Nook Tablet rooted and put Go Launcher on it. This is my first time using an android device and Go Launcher and it's all a little over whelming with all the mods I can make to my device. Just not sure where to begin when it comes to themes, apps, and icons. You guys are a great community and just looking for a little help.

I would say just start experimenting with what you already have on the device. Explore the different themes and widgets before adding on more and more packages and overwhelming yourself.
Personalizing your devices is a fun process so enjoy it and try not to turn it into a quest for the perfect device.
APKTOP.com and freewarelovers.com are two good places to look for apps. You can install apps directly from the Android Markrt (if rooted) and from the Amazon app store. I use my PC to seach for, and download apps. If you do that, you will want a simple WiFI transfer utility. FTPserver works well for me. I've had my Nook for two weeks. I have over 100 apps insralled and I am not rooted.
Check out the Themes & Apps subforum for ideas - there is an essential app thread that is a good place to start.
I read the whole section forum and people are side loading uncompatible apps, but no where does anyone explain "how to" side load an app can somenoe tell me, I have apps on my Galaxy 7in and they are not compatible with the Sony S running Android 3.2.1.
I want my Amazon app store, Pinger texting, words with friends and I have others too!
This is a new toy for me but disappointed that I cannot get these apps
Any help is appreciated!
It's easiest if you have ADB knowledge so you can pull apps from the galaxy tab and push them to the tablet s, but you can get the amazon appstore by going to amazon's website and it'll email you a link to the download. Also, I have words with friends on my tablet which I downloaded from the market no problems. Maybe with the latest tablet s update it is no longer marked as compatible, in which case we'll have to wait for the ICS update for a lot of the fragmentation problems to go away.
Put the .apk file from your Tab on your sd card, then you go into a file explorer type application on the Sony to find the file. Click on it and it should ask you if you want to install.
You should be able to download the amazon app store directly from amazon.com.
Also a nice program that will backup all your settings/files/apks is MyBackup Root, which will put all the apk's in one folder. However looks like the sony still hasn't been rooted?? I'm still waiting for mine in the mail.
Thank you
I am sure some of this is out of my league but I am going to take a shot at it. This is all new to me. I am technically challenged LOL.
I am going to go get the Amazon App Store though.
Thank you for the extra help

If you use Astro File Manager (I know plenty do) on your Tab, you can use Astro's built-in App Manager to backup the apk files from every installed app to a folder on your SD Card. Then just copy this folder to your Sony like any other file, then using Astro (or some other file manager) to click on the individual apps in that folder and choose install.
I backed it up
AGC 93
I really am technically challenged here, I downlaoded the Astro File system, and I backed up the programs I want but I don't know where I backed them up to, it didn't give me a choice as to where to back them up.
Then I dont know how to transfer them from one device to the other. I wasn't kidding when I said technically challenged!
Thank you
Sandy
you could also save apps on a shared drive and install from there using file manager or the same via dropbox, etc
Maybe?
Maybe one of you would be willing to walk me through this procedure from beginning to end and then I will learn it, but right now it is all a mumbo jumbo to me.
We can do it through PM if we don't want to clog up the forum or maybe there is someone else who needs the same help as myself
Thank you
Sandy
Would it not be easier to just use the normal Amazon web page rather than mess about trying to get an app to install? If it's anything like the Amazon iphone app, it's pretty useless anyway - certainly nowhere near as good as using the web page.
I should explain better
I really need to text so I need a texting program that works well with at least some options. Chompsms and Handcent do not work without a phone number and getting an answer from tech support from either of those is like pulling eye teeth,(sorry)
I found a texting program on my galaxy 7 inch that works wonderful and does have some options for larger fonts, a local phone number bubbles so you know who is talking blah blah blah, it is not compatible with Android 3.2.1 which is on my new Sony tablet,
I am trying to side load that and Have no idea what I am doing,
Plus when we get ICS does that mean some of the things that are not compatible now will be when we get that update?
thank you in advance for all the help
Sandy

Sorry for the slow reply. By default, the apps we be backed up to a folder called Backup on the SD card. In there, there should be your apk's.
Hope that helps
There is an app I use quite a bit on Windows called Clock Stopper. All it does is freeze the computer's clock so apps and such are all dated at the same time when installed. It would be awesome if something like this was available for Android.
Why? Because I like to try LOTS of new apps. It would be easier to freeze the clock at a certain date & time, install the apps, create a backup, etc. It makes it easier for me to remember when and what I did.
Also some apps have time restraints on them when I want to use them longer before I decide to buy them.
Strange concept...
Strange concept. I don't quite get how this works and why you will need it. Mind giving more information? Is there anything I can read up online about this?

Some trial application, let users evaluate their FULL product for a certain days.
For example :
I downloaded an application and it lets me evaluate their product for 7 days.
If I stop the time on my phone, the app will allow me to use it for unlimited numbers of days.
I doubt such app will be helpful for many people.
Android developer usually use limited functionality or advertisement in free apps.
It's mainly for reasons I and frenzyboi listed.
Attached is the Windows version. Extract the files directly to C: and copy/paste the shortcut "Clock Stopper 1.0b" to your desktop then run as admin if using Windows 7 or Vista. The program runs from a folder so there is no installation needed.

Therefore you are trying to cheat the Applications' devs.
This thread has been reported.

It isn't piracy at all! Piracy is when you use paid things without paying for them. Trial software is usually limited not only in time but in features.
Would be great
I would have a great use for something like this. My son changed the password on his tablet for the parental lock. Now the tablet is only able to be used for 3 hours per day. It has been this way for over 3 years. I tried to do a factory reset, but I think the parental lock won't let this happen. It just reboots. I also tried several rooting procedures, but that didn't work either.
Hey guys,
I have an issue I'm facing at the moment. I have purchased 3 Samsung Galaxy Nexus devices for my family, and one for myself. I wanted to setup all our devices for them and pre-install essential apps for them, and lay it out in a way which makes each device identical so that my family (which is new to Android) can all get the same easy experience from their devices, rather than everyone getting a different LG/Samsung/HTC device and having to deal with differences in skins every time someone phones me with a question about their device.
Here is what I have done:
1. Unlocked bootloader, root, installed CM10.1.2 + gapps onto my own personal device. Clean install, wiped everything.
2. Setup android with a temporary Gmail account, installed about 20 apps, setup the homescreen, changed a few settings for simplicity, change wallpapers, etc.
3. Once I was satisfied, I removed the google account, rebooted to recovery (CWM 6.0.3.2) and made a Nandroid backup which was later copied to my home server.
4. Unlocked Bootloader, rooted and installed CM10.1.2 + gapps on all the other devices, booted the device then transferred the Nandroid backup from my home server to each of these other three devices. Restore the backup, reboot, all seems fine so I setup new individual google accounts, and away I went. Everything works fine, at least so it seems.
Now the issue is that I'm having came a day or two after I got everything setup on each device. At the moment I'm having serious issues with the Google Play Store and Push Notifications. Almost all devices intermittently have issues with this. The play store issue I'm getting is [RPC:S-5:AEC-0], and prevents me from downloading or updating apps. Push notifications is not working either. For example, Google hangouts notifications don't notify me of messages on devices intermittently unless I manually check the app. Same goes with facebook and snapchat notifications. Very annoying. Tried all sorts of fixes such as removing the Google account, rebooting and adding it again, but no luck.
It seems like there is some sort of conflict with each device, but I don't understand why. I changed the Android ID on each device hoping that would help, but still no luck. If anyone could offer an explanation why this issue is occurring I would love to hear it!
Cheers.
Edit: Tried making a titanium backup of one device and moved it to a rooted Galaxy S2 running CM10.1 nightlies, and no such issue. Also, updated one nexus device to the latest nightly, still no fix. Hopefully this information will help someone be able to point out the problem somewhere.
Okay, so I've been playing with a couple of these devices today, and by removing a google account, rebooting the device and then adding the google account again, it makes the play store work on that device, but breaks functionality on the other devices. Would someone with a low-level understanding of Android care to explain why this is?
I'm going to try doing a factory reset on one of these Nexus devices and restore a Titanium Backup and see if that helps, unless anyone has any suggestions?
The different accounts are linked to the play store separately, you are best off to just downloaded each app and set up each phone with its own gmail account. I know it sounds time consuming but it would take less time than you've been spending already.
As you learn more about android there are lots of ways of doing almost exactly what you want here, but learning right now will take less time and effort than downloading 20 apps to three different phones

Thanks for the advice, but at the same time I'm using my family as guinea pigs to test whether it's possible to clone devices like this, as I'm in charge of the IT department at our organisation and I suggested it may be possible to deploy a large number of identical rooted android devices through the organisation (probably around 30-40 devices to start with). At this stage though, there seems to be some issues with doing this. Would you be able to point me in the direction of how I could clone Android to several devices, or at least deploy an identical setup to several devices? Perhaps I'll need to customize my own ROM based on Cyanogenmod? Chances are I'll be having to support different hardware as well. This may include the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Xperia Z and the LG Optimus 4X HD.
Well the absolute best way, in my opinion, would be to create your own ROM.
And by this I don't mean you need to learn how to port or build from source (at least not at first) just some simple zipkanging will do for something like this
Take the ROM.zip, open it, take out apps and such you don't want, add it the ones you do, rezip and sign
Now flash this to each phone and they will all have the same ROM and can just add their Google account.
Now if you want to have certain settings or the system ui look different than this you will need to learn how to decompile some apks and edit xml files, but start slow, do what is easy and what you can't figure out let me know and I'll try to help

Thought this might be the case.
Is it relatively simple to copy the changes I make to one ROM (eg for a Galaxy Nexus) for another ROM (eg. for a Nexus 4)? Is there some sort of Android virtual machine I can test or build this in?
Not simple at all, I was referring to multiple phones of the same type. Its easy to create identical ROMs to be flashed between 30 n4s or 30 genexs, but to create the same identical ROM to work in both types of phones would require source builds matched to each device tree
Which if you know little about android, java, c++ etc, then you have a real long journey ahead of you.
If you want to have an identical ROM (based off one already in existence) be flashed to 30 identical phones this is relatively easy depending on what all you want
Like I said, start small, learn what's easily obtained, then try for something bigger

The idea was to use CM10.1 as a base and simply add in some apps + app data and change some settings. Setting up the homescreen in a certain way would be part of that. The Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Xperia Z, and LG Optimus 4X HD all support CM10.1 stable.
If I setup a device the way I want it, would it be possible to extract some of these custom configurations from the live device to a flashable ROM?
Just because there is the same ROM for each phone doesn't mean they are exact, but in your case probably good enough. But the change you would make would be to each individual ROM (on computer not on phone) and then flashed these new versions of your ROM to each phone.
You can not make changes to your phone when running the os and extract these changes and flash them to another phone easily, near impossible to do it to a different phone make
Like I have been saying, take a ROM, open it up on PC, change what you need, flash to phone. The simpler the changes the easier it is to do. This will have to be done on a case by case basis if you are doing it to multiple types of phones
Now if you give me a list of what you want to change exactly there may be a few things you can do on your phone but in reality this is the harder way, doing all the work on PC is the easier way
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yes, I understand that. I think what I'll have to do is record the changes I make to one ROM in a changelog of some sort, and then simply recreate these changes manually to other ROMs. Through the PC of course.

Well for example, here are the outdated and rough changes I need to make to the settings (this is just a note of the changes in the settingsof the ROM to make it run way I wanted on the device). Attached it as a PDF as I couldn't copy the formatting.
Most of that should be doable by decompiling systemui.apk and settings.apk, somewhat time consuming and depending on your experience a steep learning curve, but should be able to do it

Is there a way to build Themer themes (or even Zooper widgets) on a PC or Mac and export them back out, transfer them to the device and import them into Themer?
I have been trying to build a theme but I keep getting frustrated with how cumbersome it is to use these tools on a touchscreen device. I would be able to create a theme a lot more quickly and efficiently if I could drag elements around with a mouse, type on a physical keyboard and make use of a larger screen with more real estate than my phone. I also think it would be much more precise.
A tool like this would be fairly easy to build. It'd just have to have a few basic options for the device like resolution and dpi and could also have presets so that a designer could select the device he or she is exporting to. This would also be helpful for people who are modifying themes to work with other devices or if users are running their phones with custom DPI settings (I do).
Would anyone else find this useful?
Please forgive me if this has been asked and answered already. I did a bunch of searching and couldn't come up with anything.
Thanks,
Cass

Yes. I second your idea. i did search for theme builder. nothing of that sort. on a different note , i did find an ancient theme builder for ancient symbian phones. i donot know whether to laugh or to cry. LOL

Hi, if you are asking if there is an App to build themes on a PC? If yes then the answer is sadly no.
However there is another option. You can use an Android VM such as GenyMotion. It no longer has Play Store access, so you will need to sideload Themer on it, but it does work well. http://www.genymotion.com/features/
the link doesn't work comes back as nothing found, fortunately this one does work https://cloud.genymotion.com/page/launchpad/download/
you wiull need to register and log in before download

Yeah, I started to do this but as the performance is fairly bad in emulation, I threw in the towel. If there is enough support, is this something that you guys would be willing to build? It's probably even something that could be built in a web app, meaning you could build it once and be done
The benefit here is that having a tool like this would open the door for a lot more designers. The more great themes you have in Themer the bigger your install base.
Thanks so much for responding so quickly
Edit: I misunderstood. I have tried the emulator provided with the SDK, but I'll give GenyMotion a shot also. Thanks for the suggestion.

We might have a look at an online version in the future, but that will only be once Themer is a lot more stable and we have more resources to work with. Thanks for the suggestion though!
it could be awesome for pc users
I installed Genymotion. Getting it configured with Themer took some doing, but once it was setup I had everything I needed. Thanks so much for this suggestion.
For those who want to do the same thing, there are some things you need to know. First, you need either a Google account or a Facebook account to log into Themer. That means that after you install GenyMotion, you need to do one of two things: either you need to 1) flash a Google apps package over the GenyMotion VM (a 4.3 apps package that works with Cyanogen mod works best), then log into Google, then update everything with the Play Store, and then install Themer; OR (and I didn't do this, so it might be more complex than this) sideload Facebook and sideload Themer, log into Facebook, then setup Themer.
The reason you need to do this is because in order to use Themer, you need to log in using either a Google account or a Facebook account, and Themer uses a list of accounts already on your phone (or in this case, the VM) to populate the dialog box that asks you to log in. That said, you want to have either a Facebook account or a Google account set up on the device (or VM) prior to launching Themer. Since I'd rather not ever use Facebook to do anything, that limits my option to Google.
It might be the case that if you exported themes from Themer and wanted to import it, that you might not have to go through any of these steps. However, if you want to be able to download existing themes from Themer and work with them as a starting point for building your theme, or even just pick them apart to figure out how they work in order to learn, you need to log in.
Someone correct me if I made this way more complicated than it needed to be.
As for developing a web client for theming, maybe this could be a community-led effort? I don't have the skill or time to do any of it, but if this is a popular request, perhaps we could organize a project and try to contribute to it. Is anyone interested?
