Im having trouble copying files over to the root of my Tmo GS3. Its only the CM roms that tell me i cant copy though. Any ideas?
More specifically it is telling me the phone has disconnected whenever the file gets about 3/4 of the way done.....And when i tried just directly downloading the file to the phone and moving it to root with file explorer cwm gave me an error when trying to flash.

So I have heard people talk about always putting the .zip files onto the root of our SDs. I have always followed this procedure. However, I usually tether my phone to my computer and do it all that way. When I installed NEROv2 a couple days ago, I downloaded the file straight from my phone due to no USB access on work computer. The phone initially did not know where to get a file from and told me it was aborted. But when I chose "install from SD" I was able to go into the /downloads folder and find the .zip in there. From there I chose to install .zip and it seemed to work just fine. I also DL'd JL5 and flashed that onto my phone via the same process with seemingly no issues.
What risks am I taking by not saving directly to the root of SD?
One that I can think of because it happened to me. I got locked out of my phone. My pin on the lockscreen wouldnt take. I had to reboot into recovery and reflash the ROM I was using. I would save it the SD, if for some reason you get stuck in a boot loop and can only access recovery its there if you need it.
You are right that you can install from your download folder, I do this a lot.
I think it's a combination of old practices and tied to the rooting process *MUST be on the root of your sd*
I don't think there is one good reason.... then again, how hard is it to move a file with Root explorer/astro.
I been playing with my phone for a few days now trying to get it to work and I haven't had much success although I have been learning a hole bunch and now able to load any rom onto my phone easily and flash kernels and such with ease...
The situation is that I received a phone from a friend SGSII I have never had a rooted phone and it came pre rooted, never knew much about it as it is my first Android phone and now love it
never knowing I had to do these things like "backup EFS directory" and such as I know now... anyhow, a few days ago what has happened is I have a stock rom + CF-Root and my phone all a sudden started telling me there is no IMEI and no SIM card present.. after much research, flashing of roms, kernels, bricking the phone, re flashing and so on and so foth....... xda-developers is a FANTASTICK site full of useful information btw now I'm still at the same point but a lot more knowledgeable, I have learned that the problem lies with my efs folder and have found a .nv_data.bak file that is dated dec 31 of last year, at this point it is my only so called backup and hope that it will restore proper functions of the phone, as per some of the guides and other posts and questions I have learned to do this.. so what I have done was copy using ADB my files to my sdcard folder renamed my nv_data.bin to nv_data.bak and my .nv_data.bak to nv_data.bin
also I have used root explorer to copy the hole efs folder to a location on my external sd card and used HC-kTool to make a backup of my efs folder
now I have been trying to use the command to copy my nv_data.bin file in the sdcard folder to my efs folder and it is not working as it gives me msges of write protected file or file exist canot copy... the commands I have been trying to use are
cp /sdcard/nv_data.bin /efs/nv_data.bin
cp /sdcard/nv_data.bin /efs/
I have tried also
rm command to remove the file but nothing has been working...
one thing I should mention is that I have been connecting withough usb cable as I can't seem to connect with that I keep getting device not found so I been using the wireless adb function
abd connect "ip addressort"
I have tried installing the kies driver for usb and the google sdk drivers and none seem to work, in fact kies doesn't reconize my phone aswell... but Odin seems to function through my USB just fine.... not sure if that matters or not but trying to give as much info as possible
Thank you in advance for the help.... this is a great site with very knowledgeable ppl
permissions have to be reset as the back up does not copy the permissions. Use cwm recovery to reset the permissions.
Thank you very much for you quick response, however I have just tried that, booted into cwm recovery, went to advanced and reset permissions, rebooted my hone and still cannot copy the file
Try using a Root Explorer from the market.Connect via wifi obviously if your phone cant detect sim.Phone needs to be rooted.Give Root Explorer root permission and set to R/W from R/O and copy paste the nv.data files and IMEI to the efs folder in the root of your phone, reboot, boot to recovery and "fix permissions" and boot again.
sorry I guess I should of mentioned that aswell but thank you very much for the suggestion... I have tried to edit the file weather just delet it or overwrite or change permissions with Root Explorer and to no success.. also when I push the mount r/w button in the efs folder... nothing happens and the button stays as mount r/w
I found this.Maybe it will help.

Thank, I havent had time to read through them all but I will try tonight and see if I can come up with a solution... I will post here my findings weather they are good or bad..... but thank you very much for the info
I have read and tried and seen all those post, thankyou for the info the problem is still that I cannot modify my nv_data.bin file in any way... I cannot overwrite to it or anything using rootexplorer or adb or any other program... does anyone know of any other programs or command lines to strip the read only permissions on this file as it seems stuck on this and it's driving me insane lol
Gave up
I gave up and had it done professionally, they couldn't figure it out either and had to replace the phone.... Thank you all for the great help, even tho we didn't get it figured out it was great that help was provided
Thank you XDA-Developers your awesome!!

Today I wanted to see what the JellyBean for SGS III is like so I made a nandroid backup of my current setup. After playing with JB for a while, I wanted to restore the backup, but I was greeted with an error message.
I've been messing with this the entire F****** day and so far I've isolated the file that is corrupted (it's /system/app/Keystring_factory.apk).
So I need to delete that file from within the archive. The problem is how do I do that? When I try to copy the file to my computer, it hangs on it and says "corrupted file" (tried windows explorer but also total commander). I am able to open the archive on my SGS III using something like ZArchiver, but it doesn't have the option to delete the file from within the archive.
Help?

U can extract cwm with titanium backup or use a file explorer to extract the backup and delete the file then zip it.
But I would flash a new Rom and extract cwm with TB and restore the parts u need with TB.then when all is good make a new backup.
I don't think it's a good idea to restore a corrupted file even if u find the errors
Btw. Fayaab has tweeted that he is going to release a JB for gs3 tomorrow and this should be working
Tried that too, Titanium got stuck at the file. 7-Zip got stuck even when "Testing Archive". I'll write the file off as corrupt. Interestingly enough, the data.ext4.tar is also corrupt. Does this mean it's a time for a new microSD card? Or is it CWM that's writing corrupt files somehow?
Access system files from recovery any use .

Hi guys!
I was hoping one of you could help me.
Yesterday i modified a build.prop file on my NextBook EBM8000ND (Next800T) tablet, causing it to get stuck in a bootloop every time it's turned on. I've been searching the Internet all day long but it's hard to find support when you have a device which no one in the world uses . It was rooted but I did a factory reset hoping that it would fix it. It didn't and now it's also unrooted. I tried to make a custom update.zip with the backup of the original build.prop file but the stock recovery simply refuses to load any update file. It always stops at verification. I used 7zip with store option. I tried signing the zip, I even edited the updater script to only print some text on the screen but the recovery still wouldn't load it. I tried to find a way to install CWM using sdcard but with no luck. When i tried to use ADB in recovery the device says: "failed to open driver control: No such file or directory". It might be worth mentioning that I found my device's ROM online with boot.img and recovery.img files and a .tar file which contains the original system folder.
Is there any way to make the stock recovery (since installing CWM or TWRP seems impossible) read my update file? Or is there another way to fix this? I only need to replace that single file.
Hoping to get help soon.
Cheers!
Using a Blu life x2 rooted TWRP and using a custom rom called Drax from blox2.
Having a heck of a time getting access to the root system directory. I can browse it just fine via Root Explorer app. I can see all the notification sounds and ringtones that are default. (im ultimately trying to put some new notifications/ringtones directly on the internal storage vs installing something like zedge to manage ringtones (and trying to learn as i go).
Using ADB and fastboot im able to copy files. at least i thought. Booted into TWRP, i can see my device via "adb devices" I try to copy the first time and it fails as it doesnt see the directly (which is odd to me because its clearly there, i can navigated it when booted into android and browsing via Root Explorer. I then see that adb created a directly, i try again and it says it copied. As you can see on the screen shot.
since i cant submit a link yet.... drive.google.com/open?id=0B1halGed5ltCMVY0VzduRk5kTHM
So i think im golden, i go into Android try to change the notification and .. bubkiss. Nothing. I then try to see the file in android via root explorer and its not there.
I think i have a permissions issue as i've tried copying files directly in android using Root Explorer and I get operation failed or permissions complaints.
Any insights on this?
