I finally figured out how to do this too LOL!
go to system --> media --UI (MAKE SURE YOU MOUNT /SYSTEM BEFORE MODIFYING ANYTHING)
YOu have Lock.ogg and Unlock.ogg - You need to convert a mp3 or whatever to OGG 96kbps or less 44,100 mhz -- Then RENAME original LOCK/UNLOCK to LOCK.ogg.bak and Unlock.ogg.bak (so you can restore whever you want). Now paste the new OGG lock/unlock in there and make sure the FILENAME IS EXACTLY THE SAME - CASE SENSETIVE TOO! FIX permissions, wipe dalvik/caches in recovery reboot. Works perfectly for me.
Cheers!

Go get File Converter from the PLAY STORE. Make sure your files are converted to 128kbps or lower and change sound to MONO in the File converter settings.... then rename, replace, change permissions, reboot. I did this literally 20 minutes ago and it works.

NOT WORKING. I have done exactly as you have said except I only wanna change the unlock sound. I'm on an sm-n910t(tmo note 4) I have used 4 different root file writers. Using all of the EXACT steps you have posted here and nothing. I can't even get my old unlock sound back. One file explorer shows the file but it has paper beside it. And the other file explorer has no file at all. I have changed the permissions. I have even changed the owner and group name to the exact same root as the other files. The rw is on the name is the same but I get nothing. I've wiped dalvik and cache before each attempt to make the change and nothing. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. If I could send a screen shot I would. Please any info would be helpful.

Hey here is something I threw together last night for everyone who wants the newest droid boot for a themed ROM, or just cause it looks cool It is in full QHD Glory!.
Credit to xploited, for the origional droid 3 boot that I used to make these
Installation has changed a bit, to install, download the color of the boot you want below, and extract all of the files inside. Put bootanimation.zip into System/Media. Put Droid.ogg into System/Media/Audio/Notifications for 2.3.x, and System/Media for 2.2. Just put the wallpaper on you sdcard and select from Gallery to use.
There are some CWM flashable versions of the boot animations there also,(Thanks CaelanT!) if you dont want to mess around in Root explorer.
If anyone wants a particular color just post!!
And by the way, I removed animated .gif of Steel and Green versions, page was beginning to load slow... The actual boot animation is the same as the Blue one, just a different color...
If you like it, appreciate it, or use it please press the "Thanks" button below!

Just found these same instructions in another boot animation thread, it's all working now.
Ran upstairs to look at this on my computer.
There is an audio file called out in desc.txt which is missing also.
<edit> Animation works...............looks nice.
Just rename to bootanimation as was said, and copy to system/media, not data/local.
I'll see about making a CWM version with audio tonight.
here is the audio
Having a hard time testing. no matter what I do my phone boots with the original android boot animation, not even the att one. have tried all kinds of stuff...
edit: lol i am a fool... thats my roms default boot if there is none, and I compiled the .zip wrong on my comp.
Love this, but is there any way to possibly get a white or steel colored version of this? I'd do it myself but have no clue what it entails

Bootanimation audio files in 2.3.x must go in System/Media/Audio/Notifications
Drop your audio file there and you will here the sound with the boot animation.

I tried leaked S Voice APK and just like Samsung confirmed, it is only a test app and has many bugs. You can actually hear the difference since leaked test voice sound garbled. Latest one below is one that cam with S3 Rom leak and more up-to-date.
HOW DO YOU INSTALL?
1. Download ZIP on link below(Extract on your desktop). If you download to phone directly, you still need to extract to a normal folder.
2. Contained within is 2 files.(voicetalk.apk & libsvoxtts.so)
3. Place voicetalk.apk in system/app with "Root Explorer" or like(Use Mount R/W and set permissions by holding voicetalk.apk to see sub-menu). Make sure to make permissions as "rw-r--r--".
4. Now place libsvoxtts.so on /system/lib.
5. Reboot *****NO NEED TO CHANGE build.prop such as with others.
6. ENJOY, then ask funny questions to it.
__* IF YOU HEAR NO FEEDBACK, try turning media volume up by opening phone dialer or on youtube video, or a music song and such.

***NOTE: I did limited testing, if you try on other roms and does not work, just delete both files.

Its not located on the internal or external storage. It's on the phone itself which you can't see from the PC without using adb. You need to use a root file explorer on your phone itself. ES File Explorer is free and can be granted root access. Then you'll see your system folder.

Every single file I have on mediafire is doing that. I have no idea what's going. I have submitted a support ticket so hopefully I hear something back soon.
All my files should be working again.
This may or may not work on gb 2.3.4 ReZound, let me know if you try it.
There is another thread somewhere on XDA, but the files won't work for the ReZound.
So, I spent a few hours modifying it, used this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1556613
YOU COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE!
I take no responsibility if you brick your phone, read directions and follow thoroughly.
Sorry the preview was deleted I guess, I'll have another up when I have my tools reinstalled.

To install, you MUST have root and a root file explorer that has the ability to modify permissions and mount R/W.
Make a nandroid, or do what I did, make a nandroid and copy the original files to my computer.
Amon Ra is my most recommended item, If you brick your phone with R/W (like I did once ) it will let you recover!
Backup these files:
/system/customize/CID/default.xml
/system/customize/resource/Vigor_VZW_bootanimation.zip
Mount /system R/W
Copy default.xml to /system/customize/CID
Copy andriod_audio.mp3 to /system/customize/resource
Copy Vigor_VZW_bootanimation.zip to /system/customize/resource
Set permissions to all three files:
Owner: R/W
Group: R
All: R
Mount /system R/O
reserved! Just in case.
Excellent work.look pretty nice.

Thank you, I enjoyed making it.
Nice work but you might want to remove that part about bricking the phone. If one messes up installing a boot animation then about the worst that will happen is there will be no animation. It will just show a black screen until its loaded.
That might be true, but you have to make the internal storage R/W and I know from experience, without something like amon ra covering you, your soft bricked...
My LG enlighten did this when I failed to return mount to R/O and there is no way to fix it without adb or something.

My Rezound, as well as my Thunderbolt, has /system mounted as R/W 24/7. Maybe the LG is different but HTC phones don't require the system be mounted as R/O to work. Idk, maybe there is something I'm missing here.
At any rate, good job on the animation. I'm enjoying it every time I reboot. (Which is about once every 2-3 minutes right now. Lol)
Glad you like it Rob.
Lol, well just in case I say keep it R/O, I about panicked because I had to return it when I got my rezound, they never noticed, so I guess they factory reset without checking it.
I already did a soft brick today trying to change framework-res.apk, amon ra saved me lol.

Good job will give it a shot. I like how it says "rezound, an energy star ally" if phones were energy star compliant, the rezound would definitely not nominated lol

sound isn't working though.
EDIT: Nvm forgot to Edit in the audio part into my XML, Working now!
Awesome! I love the BIOS boot up. Have it on my Incredible.
Thanks for your work, this is the only boot animation I've been able to get working on my Rezound.
You have to put the files in the right folder for the sound to work, I believe I left instructions in the op.

original boot animation taken from NicePenguin here: http://www.android-hilfe.de/themes-fuer-motorola-defy/329209-hal9000-bootanimation.html
For anyone else that wants something a little different... I've had this on my phone for a while and thought I'd share it. HAL 9000 is the computer from the old sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey
this is someone else's work that i optimized for our screens.
i resized the original for our screens (to 768x1280) and darkened them in photoshop.
I also found a soundclip of hal 9000 saying "i'm completely operational and all my circuits are functioning perfectly"
you will need access to your /system partition. put bootanimation.zip in your /system/media/ folder and if you want the audio, put that PowerOn.ogg in your /system/media/audio/ui/ folder. These files may overwrite existing files.
Here's what it will look like.

Awesome! I'll have to try it out. I was just thinking about Hal 9000 after seeing that Facebook had this line come up in my Status Update box: "How has your day been, Jameson?" Creeped me out. If my name was Dave it would have been worse. BTW, I hit the "Thanks" button, but I'm all out for today.
Just replaced the boot animation with this, really cool! The power on and power off sounds sounds great. Good job!
Murasaki likes, looking forward to throwing this on when I get off work.
Edit: Haha, this is great. Thanks!
No working i have a black screen now

did you copy the bootanimation.zip file to your /system/media folder? do not extract the files out of bootanimation.zip. can't imagine what else you could have done...

When I removed boot animation completely I'm pretty sure I had a black screen. Maybe, it didn't copy over correctly... Idk?
Edit: didn't mean to make it sound like I've tried it, yet. But, I've removed boot animation before and the result was a black screen, if I'm not mistaken.

My steps:
Download the zip given. Extract that zip wherever you'd like, all the things will go into a folder (obviously). Those things are bootanimation.zip, poweron/off.ogg
I first went into the folders and renamed the originals with a (...)2.zip at the end. I then went back into the folder and clicked Move To and placed them in to their according spots. Rebooted and working.
I didn't do this via computer, just in case anyone is confused. Downloaded from xda app on my phone and used ES File Manager to move around. Root settings and Writable.
Why not just use CWM to apply the new boot animation?

Does it put the sound file in the right place too? I've never used it on boots with audio. Just curious.

Because that's called spoon feeding. Moving two files to a folder after unzipping a file isn't difficult

Sure, moving two files to a single folder is simple, but moving three files to two folders?
j/k
That meme made that post gold, haha. Thanks for the laugh!

Another common way to keep the old bootanimation in there just in case is to rename them to bootanimation.zip.bak (for "bakup...").
Both ways work, that just seems to be how everybody does it.
Very nice animation by the way.

Nothing wrong with being weird unique.
Thanks for this. Classic!
Love this boot animation. I been running the 4.1.2 stock and i like the simple boot animation it uses.but this Hal one is awesome, especially with the audio it comes with haha. Most people i know wont get the reference but its super creepy when u do get it haha. Im just using the poweron not poweroff audio and the audio is almost perfectly timed for how long it takes to boot up the phone, excellent work. Nice job doblebo on bringing it over and to nicepenguin for creating it
