The wipe data and factory reset option will wipe the /data partition which includes application data, any apps you've downloaded, pictures, music, messages, and contacts that are not stored on your sd-card. In addition to wiping the /data partition it also wipes the /cache partition which mostly contains your apps temporary files, and other system related temporary files. Your contacts can be backed up to your Google account, messages can be backed up with SMS Backup +, and for your other data I would recommend taking a look at My Backup it doesn't require root, if you are rooted Titanium Backup is a very handy tool for backing up your device.

Just to clarify do you mean it's gets stuck on the Cyanogenmod Bootanimation or the Setup Wizard welcome screen when you first setup the phone after wiping it or installing a new ROM? Do you have adb debugging enabled (Under Developer Options in System Settings)? Because if you do then you can use that to pull files from your device. Otherwise what you try doing is booting into recovery and trying ADB through recovery to see if you can access it that way, another suggestion would be in recovery mode to do a NANDROID backup of your current setup and then transfer the backup to your computer, extract the userdata.img from the NANDROID backup, and then use Linux to view the content of the userdata.img file (This would be a decent place to start). Otherwise I'm afraid you may be out of luck.

[Q] Samsung S3 Permanent freeze on home screen

My appologies for this post. Probably this problem is being dealt before on this forum but cant seem to find a solution to mine.
hi, i have a samsung s3 32gb (original stock unrooted).
Problem my space was running low on my s3. And while shooting a video, the space ran out and the phone froze. then i tried to end the video but obviously the screen was frozen.
After that i tried to reboot the phone but it came to the home screen, and couldnt press anything. (i only can drag the top bar down and that's it, it doesnt come back up).
i tried soft reset, didnt work. i tried to boot in safe mode, it doesnt work (it get stuck at the samsung logo). download and recovery mode works fine.
when i connect it to the pc, in device manager i get under Portable Devices (MTP USB device with a yellow triangle and ! mark). obviously KIES doesnt recognise anything connected.
After reading lot of posts, i installed 'android-sdk' and ran 'adb.exe' in cmd.
adb devices shows my device ; i can see all the directories on my phone.
when i try to copy, move or delete any files from the phone to my pc to empty the phone storage, i get this message "device not found".
i dont wanna lose my pics and videos +data (no backup). ANY HELP GUYS???

Try clearing cache and dalvik. If it doesn't work, u might have to factory reset which deletes ur data. Since android-sdk doesn't work anymore and kies too. There is no way to back up ur data. Ur only hope is tat clearing cache and dalvik works.

pictures and videos are stored on the internal sdcard, so they are save even if you decide to wipe your data.
you will only lose your app data and settings
but try first the suggestion from the post above

if you are referring to clearing the cache that is in the recovery mode. i already cleared the cache and still same thing happening.
can you explain 'dalvik' ? what to do step by step if possible
Also you mentioned that android-sdk is not working, (it is true ) but how come i can still see all my phone contents ?

if you are referring to the factory reset inside the "settings" menu in the phone, i think it would be true (the pics & videos wont be affected)
but if you are referring to the reset in the recovery mode. i think that will format everything including my personal data (pics & videos) and return the phone to a factory state (which is how it was new). isnt the OS and data are on the internal sdcard as well ?
Their comments refer to a custom recovery, e.g Philz, where you can clear dalvik and also mount your storage for usb access.
I think you have bigger problems, the phone should not have frozen as you describe and you many have partition corruption.
There are step by step guides on how to install custom recovery in general forum, stickies. It will invalidate your warranty, which might not be a good idea if you need a new motherboard.

[Q] How to bypass pattern lock?

Hi there,
Please forgive my stupid questions, I don't know much about this kind of stuff!
My daughter has a pattern lock on her Asus Memo HD7, and she forgot what it was. I have no idea what email was used, I've tried all possible emails to reset the screen lock, but none of them work.
I could do the factory reset, but I would just hate to lose all her photos and videos.
I watched a few youtube videos, and installed the adb/fastboot. I can't get the adb commands to work at all, but it has recognized the tablet a couple of times with fastboot. Problem is, I have no clue what commands to use to access her photos? (I also don't know if the tablet's debugger is enabled or disabled). Or if there is a way to bypass the pattern lock? Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

Wipe data (factory reset) it means : delete installed apps & system apps's data
This will not delete any pictures or videos or any content located on internal memory or sdcard.
There is a guide here: (you need ADB for this, but keeps all apps and settings)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800799
Or look at the smudges on the screen..

So if I choose the wipe data/factory reset button it will not delete the photos? I thought that wiped the whole thing back to how it was coming out of the box?
What do the options 'back up user data' and 'restore user data' do?
Thanks!

[SOLVED] deleted gatekeeper.pattern.key ! now can't lock again

I have a silly problem, I had freshly installed the unofficial CM14.x and between all the new settings forgot the Lockscreen pattern. Since i didn't want to try factory reset and other solutions without data loss didn't wird, I searched a bit and erasted the /data/system/gatekeeper.pattern.key via ADB ! It actually helped passing through lockscreen, but now I can't set any new lock (none of the options tough) / I can't go to the option… I get dropped out with an error…

Chill.
You able to access your files and data?
Just open settings and change the screen lock to "none" or "swipe", then select pin/password and set your own.
It should fix it.
If it doesnt then make a backup of your data and clean flash stock rom by wiping system, cache and data (not internal sd).

Says right in the in original post that he can't set any new lock with any of the options, it just crashes. I think he's got not choice but a re-flash.
As @Tanner1294 noticed. I can't change the locksreen options anymore and that's the problem (I can't use the device without lock! But I wouldn't)
backing up data may work or maybe not, because the missing files could be under data… But I'll give it a try.
I don't know why I couldn't replace the screen password via Google Device Manager… The device was recognised and the pass and message has been sent to it, but i couldn't interact with it at all! only "emergency call" was touchable If it's an issue in Android 7.x or CM14.x dunnow
Maybe dirty flashing the ROM again will help

Make a backup of contacts, sms, apps(or just download from playstore) or use titanium backup if you want app data also.
And clean flash rom.
Forget everything and clean flash after making backup.
That file is related to system and has to be present in /data/system/ so will remain excluded from backups you make.
Make sure you clean flash rom.

If I only knew how I can re-install my selection of apps straightforward, I wouldn't hesitate about clean flash; I don't worry about my files, contacts etc.
I'll try to figure out, how Titanium Backup works… Thanks for advice
The problem is now solved without reflashing etc.
I just had to know which other files need to be removed in addition to /data/system/gatekeeper.pattern.key
they were locksettings.db locksettings.db-wal locksettings.db-shm from the same directory!
So i removed them, whatever they may contain
then rebooted to system and everything was on the rail, i could pick a lockscreen method again.
PS: I haven't imagined that havong debugging mode enabled could make an Android system so unsecure though!

Titanium backup is godly makes transitioning between ROMs a breeze like you never left your setup. In TB app top right corner is a blank page with check mark on it. In there you can backup/restore large chunks of apps and data. After a fresh install rooted first thing install is TB and got to that section restore and choose what you want from backup. System apps can be backup also but will find some won't work on other ROMs. Regular apps will have no such issues. There is also TB sms backup. To use that you must set TB as default sms app. Restore sms then revert back to regular sms app and open. There all your messages will be restored.

You shouldn't delete " /data/system/gatekeeper.pattern.key" as "locksettings.db locksettings.db-wal locksettings.db-shm" contain your lock screen pattern. So to remove pattern just delete these files. Android device manager won't work if it reads that your device has already a pattern/PIN enabled. I guess it worked a while ago on password protected devices as well but not anymore.

[Q] Doubts about android 8.1

Yesterday I installed a ROM (Unofficial Resurrection Remix) thanks to EndLess and it seemed great, really very good work with the system. But when I went to restore the original rom of the phone "TWRP" asks me for an unlock pattern, after putting it and restoring the original system image, I am ready to boot the system. The system starts well, but asks me for the same pattern to start the boot. Then the loading process continues and I get to the part of setting the unlock pattern to start Android. Here's my problem, the pattern I used is the same one that I used the previous 2 times and it does not work.
Therefore I have 4 questions:
1- Is it possible to delete the encryption of the phone and leave it as it was before installing Android 8.1?
2- Is it possible to access my previous system?
3- I noticed that this room does not come with root activated, is it possible to root the ROOM?
4- If I put a new unlock pattern, will the current one be overwritten in the encryption or will the phone simply not find a way to boot and I will have a beautiful paperweight?
Thanks in advance.
Please forgive my English, it is not my native language

As it seems that you encrypted your device somehow by chance.
1. Before installing any rom you have to format your data First. That'll Remove the pattern.
2. Accessing the old system depends upon your access. If you are now encrypted then no actually.
3. Yea just flash magisk zip and the rom will be rooted.
4. Expect an out of the world paper weight.

Thanks for the quick response, would you be so kind as to explain to me what do you mean by "format your data first"?
You mean to delete all the partitions of the phone and install everything from 0 ??
How am I supposed to do that? I have a save from the previous system, I told "TWRP" to save all the partitions in my phone. If I restore that backup, will my device be decrypted?

Boot to TWRP, and select "Format data". You will lose all your data, plus the contents of your internal SD - but the encryption will be gone. You should back up your internal SD (either to an external SD drive, or your PC, etc) before trying any of this. I hope you have backups of your data.

When you select "wipe" on main menu. There will we two options at bottom. One will say "Format data" and another will say "Partition" select format data. It will open a new screen saying that format data will delete all the data and Remove encryption. Type yes and continue. However backup your data before doing this. Better copy the files using mtp from recovery or system.

I saw that option later, thanks to all who help, my system was recover. The only strange thing was the lock pattern. I delete from /data/system/ this 2 files, "gatekeeper.password.key" and "gatekeeper.pattern.key". Use TWRP as file manager and my phone good as new.
