SGS2 Lightning Rom Flashing (Newbie) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm here because I'm new to flashing, rooting and whatever comes within this territory. I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 which was bought from a retail store in New Zealand. It's not an imported phone however Vodafone is its "Carrier" of choice.
What I want to do, is flash the device with this ROM because I am having battery drain issues with the Stock ICS 4.0.3 firmware. I have tried everything, removing apps, wiped cache partition a few times, but when Wifi is on 24/7 it drains from 100% to 0% in literally 8-9 hours flat. That's with me doing absolutely nothing with the phone.
I installed BetterBatteryStats and Battery Monitor Widget. The latter app shows my phone discharging -8.0% while Wifi is on and -0.2% when it's off. BetterBatteryStats doesn't indicate anything that is obvious.
So, I'm hoping a ROM like Lighnting may help. Plus, I love it's theme, look and feel.
Down to my real questions.
If I have any issues during flashing of the ROM, can I return the phone back to its stock firmware?
What is the procedure to do so?
Can anything go wrong?
Thank you
STEALA

Here's couple screenshots of my battery usage. Yesterday there was an update so I updated. Wiped cache and factory data reset. All I installed was AirDroid and setup Gmail.
The drain is quite excessive.

you can revert by flashing a stock rom on odin

Hiya, thanks for the information. I looked up some YouTube videos and it all makes sense. The only problem is I couldn't find my Kernel from the above website? See attached image? Is that XWLP1 or LPI (i)?
Thanks

Can anyone please help me with the above query about my modem?
Thanks

Oops! Thanks for that.

Well, couldn't get access to Lite'ning ROM website which left me feeling disappointed, as I did want this ROM. I however ended up successfully CF rooted my SGS2 and flashed CyanogenMod v9 Stable. This is the guide that helped me with this: http://www.techethon.com/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-9-galaxy-s2-i9100-version-cm9-ics/
I'm looking forward to playing with this and seeing if my battery drain lasts longer, with Wi-Fi on.

[Q] Help me select ROMS

hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing

[Q] Best ROM for battery and performance

Hi,
Im looking for a ROM which uses less battery and has good performance. So far i've got VillainROM and WajkIUI. I could'nt find the 2.3.6 version of VillianROM and i think its not out yet. My SGSII is stock 2.3.6.
Also, i read somewhere that there is a 'counter' for custom roms and once the counter goes up, you lose warranty. Is that true?
you will get a best perform rom and batt friendly if you join to it a good kernel and modem but I suggest you checkroom v4 wish is EXCELLENT without too much tweak and removing all the samsung junk so you can still download it again with an app that cam when you flash the rom
and actually I'm on syiah 2.5 gt+KL1 modem and very fine at the moment no battery drain for nothing and everything is smooth as butter
if you read carefully you will not brick your phone and everything is reversible to 100% stock phone actually sue no worry for warranty
there is a counter if you flash an insecure kernel or rom but you can reset with a ''micro jig'' that you can buy on ebay for less than 4$
and with the new clockwork mod app you can bypass the counter by the way and you save the time to connect to the computer and flashing with odin ...

Sorry, Im a noob to all this. What do you think is the best kernel and modem for my rom? I downloaded and flashed XWKK5 and the kernel is
[email protected]#2. Dont know how to find the modem lol sorry
you just have to download any kernel from this site there are few very good !
the kernel you have on it is a stock kernel
you have to follow the direction if you want to root(install cf-root)that match your version, make a backup and download titanium backup (verrrrry good app)
siyah 2.5 gt (the one I use)
speedmod (I used it very good batt life but feel not as stable as siyah) and you are a gunea pig with this one
DK very good based on siyah kernel with a bit better battery life maybe
you have to match your current version wish is kk5
for the modem is the base band in phone info and its should be KI4 at the end if I'm ok or KI3

[Q] SGSII heating a lot while doing regular tasks

Hallo everyone!
So since a week ago i'm a proud owner of Samsung Galaxy S2 (yay!).
It had Android 2.3.5 at the beginning so 2 days ago i've updated it to ICS (4.0.3). I've updated it via ODIN (since it couldn't find updates via KIES or by air) with a official ROM (if that's what it's called) from samfirmware.
Since then my phone heats up a lot more compared to 2.3.5 , i don't know how's that possible but i haven't installed any new apps or used the phone differently since the update. I know it's normal to heat up when playing games but even if i'm browsing the web it heats up a lot. I haven't this problem with 2.3.5
Any suggestions?
Go back to 2.3.5 and wait for JB.Or try custom rom.

So it's a common issue?
Hmm.. This is weird.. I'm having the same issue, but I'm having it with JellyBean ROMs.
For ICS the combination that works for me best is Cyanogenmod 9.1 and Siyah Kernel. If that still heats up, you might want to try some different modem and check out if any of them works for you. I think the stock XXKH3 modem helps.

As you might red above i'm a total newb to Android world atm , i just learned how to flash few days ago, i'm not going to mess with new modems etc. (for now). Do you guys think that if i upgrade to that leaked 4.1.2 , that might fix the problem? Also i didn't do factory reset after the upgrade to 4.0.3 because some other user from other forum told me that if i install the official 4.0.3 rom from Samsung - there's no need to do factory reset.
I would have done a factory reset, but thats just me.ICS was overheating my wifes phone, but it was the 4.0.4 thats worst.
If you are flashing modems, you should root first and backup your efs folder......and make a nand backup.

As i mentioned i won't be flashing modems and such. What would you suggest me to do from that point (aside from downgrading)?
You can only downgrade to GB.I detest ICS(rootbox was ok),so I went back to GB.
But now I use vanilla rootbox(JB) with dorimanx kernel.
Only problem Ive seen with this so far is the bloody volumes far too loud when I press keys(had to switch it off).
Anyway, whatever you do make sure you get rooted and backup your efs folder.
So i just upgraded to JB and we'll see how's it going.

UPDATE: So i've upgraded to 4.1.2 (JellyBean) , haven't installed any apps and for about 10 min. of browsing the web it jumped from 31°C to 37°C. What should be the average temperature of SGSII while using it (not playing games)?

How do i get back to original rom

hi guys,
i have a samsung galaxy s2 (GT-i9100 - NFC), which i got from orange end of 2011. I the in jan 2012 got help from this forum to root my phone and change the rom from the original to:-
Rom & Build No: VillianROM 3.0
And' ver: 2.3.5
Baseband: i9100XXki1
Kernel: 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ninpo @ titan #20
Although the phone works okay, i'm beginning to notice a lot of slowdowns and regular reboots, so i want to go back to whatever latest google android OS the S2 can handle (rooted). I've forgotten what to do and would be most grateful if someone could please help me with the following:-
1. Whats the best software/method to backup everything?
2. What is the latest rom (original, but should not have a provider's bloatware) i can use on the S2?
3. Once backed up, how do i change from VillianRom to the latest/best OS currently available?
4. How can i root the original rom?
Thanks once again

1. Depends. You can do a backup in CWM to image your device or you can use Titanium Backup Pro to just backup your apps/appdata and restore to new rom.
2. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ < Check your device/model here.
3. Well just so you're clear, There is no "best" its subjective. Also "latest" depends on what type of rom you want to flash like Sammy/AOSP/AOKP/CM/MIUI etc. To flash latest samsung do it via ODIN, to flash any other do it via CWM. All info you need is already on forum.
4. By flashing custom kernel via ODIN.
All your questions have already been answered countless times.
Thanks very much guys. I simply want a fast lean rom as some seem to be slow running.
Doesn't get better than this.
sendign the phone for warranty?
you will need to flash back the original rom and unroot your phone.
if they found your phone is rooted the warranty void, experience it before so be aware of this.
Let me thank you guys for advicing me. I am most grateful. I read your posts a bit late and in the meantime, I think i have bricked my phone as i've flashed Samsung's original FW (I9100PBVLP8_I9100PORALP8_ORA) from sammobile.com. I used Odin v3 and successfully flashed the phone, but it's simply stuck on the boot logo. I have even done the following:-
I've managed to wipe the cache partition, but the recovery menu has No advanced options. It says:-
ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY <3a>
reboot system now
apply update from ext' storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redband fota[FS]
But i still cannot get it to boot. I have also tried to use an old nandroid.md5 backup i made, but odin reports the file as invalid.
I'm desperate guys, please could someone help me.
Download Mode and re flash.
Are you sure you are flashing the right ROM right? Check under the battery to see the Device Model.
If it's i9100, then make sure you are downloading a i9100 ROM.
Thanks very much for your advice gastonw - i have managed to fix the problem now by going into system recovery and doing a factory reset, so thank you.
Although everything seems to be working fine, i would have preferred a more newer 4.2 jelly bean rather than 4.0.3. Oh well beggars can't be choosers and all that, lol! I guess i'll have to re-root it again.

I'm quite new myself @ this so plz use caution when trying it out.

Good to know man, enjoy it
About root, I've seen a couple of methods laying around the threads, I'm sure they're safe.
I still think that ExynosAbuse app is the fastest way to Root now (one-click).
Here's a vid. I never tried it tho.
Thanks very much for the links AnubuRe and Gastonw.
Gastonw mate, i have been playing with the rom you posted a link to. Don't get me wrong, it's great and very fast, but the downside is that it doesn't have a huge number of options to tweak etc. Now someone mentioned a rom called Neatrom, but i'm wondering what you can recommend? I don't want a bloated rom...i want a fast rom, but with some options to allow me more greater control over the phone.
Also, i know this is a bit off-topic, but can you recommend me a widget app, where i can quickly dial phone numbers i.e. by touching a person's photo?

[Q] Help needed after root!

So I have rooted my classmate his Galaxy S2 with CF-Root, which I now realized was a big mistake. It seems that he when he opens his camera app, a black screen comes but he can still take pictures. He can't also access the YouTube app. Another thing is that he lost ALL his files on his intern memory (like pictures, music etc. Which was kind of weird, because I have never had such a problem.) He doesn't really care about losing his files, contacts etc. He just wants to take pictures and access YouTube again. I read on a different topic that flashing Siyah kernel would fix this? Also, IF I have to flash Siyah for him, I have to put the Siyah kernel file in Odin in PDA and hit start, right?
Sorry if this isn't a huge question. It's just that I have never flashed to a different kernel (I have always flashed Custom ROMs with the kernel provided in there). Also is there a chance of any errors, mistakes, something going wrong? I know I can always flash back to the latest stock ICS rom, but nothing big should happen when switching kernels? Or am I wrong?

If the phone is running on ICS you can flash siyah kernel 5.01 with odin. Its perfectly safe. Just install samsung kies for the drivers. And if your phone is running on GB do not flash siyah
Thing can always go south when flashing. Wanna try a safe-friendly method for flashing custom kernels and Stock ROMs? Try Mobile Odin.

If you have proper drivers installed its perfectly safe to flash siyah using odin. Do not wipe or restore nandroid backups on your current cf root recovery. You can do anything after flashing siyah or dorimanx kernel
It seems highly unlikely to me that CF-root started all this. Did you flash the correct CF-Root for the correct rom version? You didnt mention which version of CF-root you flashed or what version of the stock rom he has.
If you got no experience in other kernels, why not do a full wipe and start from scratch?
