Hello guys,
I just got myself an Atrix 4G, it should be here by tomorrow. I'm a LG Optimus One user, and i decided it was time to buy a new phone, after a year and a half with that LG (running CM9 atm on it).
I have been reading this forum for a while, reading about Atrix, CM10 (impressed with epinter's work) and stuffs, but i still have some questions and i would love if you guys could answer them.
1th one:
I live in Brazil and imported the Atrix 4G from Mercado Livre, a website like eBay. I have been reading here that the AT&T phone have some problems with OTA updates and stuffs like that, so people are losing they phones when they updated or unlock bootloader... some stuffs like that. So my question is: since i live on Brazil, should i ignore any OTA update if i want to enjoy custom roms? Or i can upgrade and root/unlock when i feel i want it?
2th one:
Still on the bootloader topic, i see i need to use something called Fastboot. The link say it's compatible only with Windows... but i use Ubuntu as my desktop, with no dual boot. Can i use terminal to run it too?
3th one:
ICS and JB roms seems to not have HW acceleration drivers because NVidia don't release they drivers for those versions. Does it mean TEGRA is basicly useless and not used on those roms yet? If so, how is gaming on those roms?
4th one:
I use my LG Optimus One basicly to read books (yeah, i should buy a tablet, but nah..) and gaming with GBA/SNES emulators, and for that, CM9 (and CM7 before it) give me great performance. So, what is the rom with best performance in games for Atrix? I guess ICS/JB ones are out of the table, and i don't think the default CM7 would be it... i mean, it's fast, but usualy roms based on them do more tweaks in performance, so... any recommendation?
I'm pretty anxious and hope the phone gets here soon! For someone who only played around with dumb phones and mid/low end Android devices, a dual core with a TEGRA GPU will be a huge boost
Thanks in advanced guys! And sorry for my english :S
I can't answer all you question, but regarding OTA there are no updates out since last JUNE, there is a chance the phone is updated. Motorola fixed the issue so the OTA update is fine to carry out. The latest update for AT&T is 2.3.7 GB Blur_Version.4.5.141.MB860.ATT.en.US.
Regarding UBUNTU. You might be able to use SuperOneClick through MONO to fastboot. Also I have found this russian forum link showing how to fastboot in Unbutu. Only issue is its in RUSSIAN lol.. http://forum.motofan.ru/index.php?showtopic=1730813
I personally would not update to ICS firmwares just yet, as they do not have fingerprint scanner support just yet.
I am currently using CM7.2 and had GTA 3 on my phone, its works great no lag, pretty smooth too.
HOPE this helps

Fastboot is available for linux... its RSD lite that isnt... Use http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2010/05/sbfflash.html instead of RSD, and use the fastboot found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092 (should be first or second on list depending on 64 or 32 bit... Hope that helps

I am currently perfectly fine with my deivce right now. Only thing i want is google voice video chat which is in 2.3.4 update i believe and hdmi mirroring which should be possible now that the bootloader is unlocked.
Anyone know around what date the officak release should be? It should soon right?
No word on official release... people think it's in the next few weeks but it's just speculation given the quality of the builds seen so far.
Personally, I'd say wait. The 2.34 version everyone is flashing right now is more for play than use at the moment. Wait at least until some more complete/stable roms have been built or the various issues people have been having with the leaked version have been fixed.
I agree with mysticdrew. I have decided to wait for a week or two till we get the official update to 2.3.4. I will unlock only once CM is available for atrix.

+1. I have no problem waiting a month or more for an official 2.3 update .
In kenneth's unlock guide there's 24 steps to unlock. With the official 2.3.4 you start at step 13, which is where the steps are easier/safer.
I also am waiting on something more stable. But I'm still refreshing the forums every few hours and getting my reading in! Best advise I can give if you are unsure is read read read before you attempt.
I unlocked mine and it was relatively simple to do. The only problem I had was the /data wipe.

Are you for serious? I mean its a developer community, and the gingerbread rom out there is not really a test Rom, its Motorola release leak. I think its worth installing it. And its very simple! And totally safe.

yes I'm serious. The leaked build is not specifically for US AT&T
The leaked build from Hong Kong / Taiwan was probably not built for a device that is exactly like ours. Test phones can have different hardware. Don't expect everything to work, it's super-duper beta and since we've all only been unlocked 24hrs no one really knows how usable it is! Flash at your own risk... (PS you can 'Skip' Motoblur just by hitting 'Menu' during setup. It won't connect anyway...)

Why mess with all of this when within a month or so we can get a fully supported OTA update? The current formal Atrix build is just fine. Unless you're a dev trying to build ROMs or something, I don't see a huge benefit other than just saying you have the latest and greatest. There's multiple posts in the Atrix section with "I applied 2.3.4 and X does not work properly", not worth it IMO when there is no significant benefit.

The unlock is relatively simple yes, but the 2.34 leak isn't issue less for sure - there are resolution issues, home button issues, data speed issues, network issues, lots of small issues people have been having (all probably fixable for sure, but definitely a n00bie would be overwhelmed).
point of having unlocked bootloader is to have custom and 3rd party solutions.
what point is it to wait for the official release when you can still enjoy the hot cake now and switch to official release when it is out?
in that case you do not need the unlocked bootloader in the 1st place.

True, access to custom and 3rd party solutions, but that has no bearing on the decision to wait until there's a stable solution unofficial or official. There's a stability threshold everyone has and for some obviously it's met and for others it hasn't.
I'm going to wait for there to be a stable rom, or at least for the official gingerbread release.

I agree. I see no problem with unlocking now, but since there isn't much to do with it right now I just won't do it. I'm not interested in some buggy Taiwan or whatever build of the GB update...
Maybe I'm missing something, but is there anything else we can do with the unlocked phone RIGHT NOW?
Not to be a **** but the whole point of XDA is to try things before they are meant to be tried and trying things that shouldnt be tried. Im running 2.3.4 and it is completely stable, no freezes or reboots. Only thing that does not work is motoBlur and Fingerprint reader. This build is completely safe if you read the directions and then read them again.
IMO no. You can apply barely tested stuff, shake your fist in anger when multiple core functions break, and then flash back to stock w/ root . If you're a dev, then yes all of this 2.3.4/unlock stuff is like Christmas right now.
Like I said, many people have tried 2.3.4 and its STABLE.
You can also use cwm recovery now without having to plug your AC charger in. For me, that in itself is worth unlocking the bootloader over.

- stock ringtones are missing

All this just to get a HKTW 2.3.4 a few weeks in advance??
the point of XDA is NOT for a general user to try out stuff before devs have had a chance to try it out for less than 24 hrs.

From the HKTW thread:
"WARNING

This doesn't assure people it's stable, and if it were perfectly stable, there wouldn't be multiple threads about fixing some of the issues from flashing this. It's a beta, and not even for the US phones. Don't be so naive as to think you know everything about this build, and also don't be so pigheaded as to think you know better than the devs who give us this stuff, and posted the aforementioned warning. Anything which is alpha or beta is not stable, or it would be live and in all our phones right now from Moto/AT&T. If people don't want to flash it, that's up to them!

Hi
I have a brand new Motorola Defy on T-Mobile UK still running 2.1. It is red lens. There is still no official update for it.
Whilst I am quite geeky, I prefer my phone to just work. So once I have upgraded it I don't plan to do so again for another 12-18 months unless there is a really good reason to update before hand.
So I am looking for a stable update, that will still be compatible with new apps in 12-18 months time. I want the updates for the following reasons: speed, battery life, as few bugs as possible, stability, any camera improvements and 720p video recording.
Yes it is a long list I figure an Android 2.3 is probably better than a 2.2 for future proofing. Last night I spent a few hour reading the wiki and information about lots of roms.
I am not looking for help in how to do anything as there are quite a lot of info on the threads about it. I would just like to know which is the best rom/s to install now, from experienced users.
Thanks Alex
The official update for T-Mobile UK android 2.2 (froyo) has been out for a couple of weeks now - it's on the Motorola Software Update site ready for download. There's also the retail version there that would have no operator logo etc.
I'm using CM7 on my UK Defy (green lens on mine as it's an early one) & find it be the best ROM I've used so far - much better than the stock eclair it came with & better than the froyo ROMS I flashed (used 2 leaked UK 2.2 & a Nordic 2.2).
I'd recommend CM7 as it's very stable for me - no random reboots or freezing like would happen from time to time on 2.1 & 2.2 when I had those.
CM7 is still in development but it's working fine for me but if started using it you may need to flash an upgrade every so often but this was quite easy for me & only took a few minutes.
MIUI is also out for the Defy - haven't used it myself so can't comment but it seems popular.
Thanks for the info.
Can anyone tell me how I can get this posted in the General section?
I have no idea how it got into the Themes and Apps section.
It might be on the motorola website but over an hour later I cannot get the installer to recognise an internet connection, so I will give up on this. CM7 doesn't yes support 720p recording so I will try something different.
if you want a customisable and pure speed ROM, it's CM7, but if you dont plan to tinker a lot, then MIUI is pretty good as it's already a pretty nice looking ROM, with a lot of iOS influence
Im so good at listening to advice I ignored it all and tried to install 2.3.4 from forum.xda-developers com/showthread.php?t=1135901.
Somehow I not get a flashing red moto logo, system restore and bootloader do nothing and the phone does not show up on my computer. At a bit of a loss what to do now!
Remove battery, and put it back.. While starting keep the vol up button pressed. It ll take u to moto bootloader state. Connect to pc with usb. Use rsdlite software to detect it.. Then flash with any full sbf of ur choice to give back life to ur defy...
Thanks for the info. It sounds so simple. Sadly after hours of trying this morning I still can't get the phone to turn on.
First of all: check if your phone has a green or red lens (the answer is here). If your phone has a green lens, sorry, but nothing can be done for it to record 720p videos (hardware limitation). But, if your Defy is brand-new, you'll probably get the red lensed one, because green lensed Defy are old and, AFAIK, not selling anymore.
If you want speed and stability, with 720p recording, I recommend you to install Barebones Froyo with Hancock's 720p mod (mod available here). For better compatibility, ROMs based on the leaked GBs are the best option, and there is also a patch for it to be able to record in 720p (even though I wasn't able to get this one working on my phone - but many people did and are satisfied with it).
For speed + stability + compatibility, CM7 is the one to go for. But it doesn't have 720p enabled yet (some nightlies do, but they're not stable, and even on these nightlies, 720p is not working for everyone).
MiUI is also stable - and beautiful - but not as fast as CM7. For CM7's speed with the looks of MiUI, check here for the Meizu theme.
First thing first... Flash back your phone with full sbf. I would recommend start flashing froyo 2.2.2 since you're from 2.1.
I assume your Defy is red lens as it is newly bought right.. Flash gingerbread 2.3.4 and patch it the 720p followed with installing lgcamera for video recorder. Lastly patch it multitouch to have more than 2 fingers touch. You can find these all in the developer section. Above poster already guided you how to go into bootloader, clean cache and installing rsdlite drivers. Take one step slowly...

Hmm... my Defy is a May 2011 model (taken from the serial number) brand new UK retail version from Amazon. Updated to 2.2.2 from the Moto site. Lens is clearly Green...
CM7, out of the question.
CM7... da best u can hav!
CM7 is really stable for defy!
Stock 2.2 GB rooted and overclocked is really nice.
Current custom roms break too much at the moment for me.
I need an infrastructure hot spot, stable wifi, gps that does not need agps to lock and working fm receiver.
I fancy a go with CM7 or miui, but I am going to wait a while for all the fixes to roll in. The devs need people to test and use these roms, but with over 2 million hits i think they have enough already
Ask yourself if you really need a custom rom yet?
I would recommend either a stock froyo rom or adlxmod froyo, as they are stable and won't require any real upkeep. Adlxmod can be updated directly from the phone itself and is hassle free.
CM7 is probably one of the best roms but has nightly updates almost everyday, which is great for people like me who want to be on the bleeding edge but not if you dont want to update.
Stock 2.2.2 GB retail via MSU has 1-2 random reboots/day marring its Kudos. Always when you really don't need it...
True, I forgot about that, I tried it for an hour and was amazed that the official was that bad. In that case nordic froyo is very stable and 2.3.4 motoginger is also very good too, just takes a bit longer to install though.

Really? Wow, mine has been rock solid with overclock to 1Ghz. My hero running MoDaCo and villain used to bork out all the time, but the defy has been up for 3 days now using gps, sms, email, wifi tether and web and not a single reboot or lock.
Running launcher pro with scale transition effect and it is very smooth and responsive - very pleased with it so far.
Sounds like I might be doing something wrong
I wonder if some folks hardware (mem and cpu) is a bit flaky? Might be interesting to see place and date of manufacturer of those units that are rebooting. Still does not explain why they can run CM7 well though.
Practically every rom has ran fine for me except 2.2.2 uk. I even used MSU and then re-did using rsdlite, both instances it was terrible. If I was a standard user and didn't experiment with different roms I probably would have been pissed you must be one of the lucky ones.
Hi everyone,
After lurking for a month or so, and searching through various threads, I have a few questions for the more knowledgeable/experienced.
I purchased a 2.3.6 MX2 from Cellular South about a month ago. My options were very limited, as CS's selection of android devices is absolutely terrible. The MX2 seems to be the best android device CS carries, at least hardware-wise.
To be blunt, I've come to hate this phone. The stock firmware (GB2.3.6) is buggy, slow, slow, slow, and slow. Did I mention slow? I've rooted and installed the standard suite of root apps (adfree, TB, root explorer, etc...).
I'm probably a bit spoiled, as my previous phone was a Desire (BravoC), running a newer MIUI release, with a few other optimizations. I did not let it go willingly. I also own a slightly modded Kindle Fire, which runs wonderfully.
Now, after all that, on to my actual question(s):
1. Are there are ROMs available for the MX2, that include wifi/major component functionality?
2. I've read about some of these scripts on the forums, but have been warry of trying anything so far. Could someone point me in the right direction as far as what scripts might work?
3. I'm willing to try just about anything else to improve my MX2, provided that I can keep major functionality, wifi included. Any ideas?
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible. And don't get me wrong--I think the MX2 is a great hardware platform, I'm just feeling let down by the stock firmware...
Thanks in advance!
What you guys should be waiting for is a 2.3.5/413 based rom as that kernel works well with your 2.3.6 system.
1. No
2.V6 Supercharger, and the second core script are the best. Both are super easy to install.
3. Skwood (the guy above me) has an awesomely clean Blur nandroid for the MX2 check it out

Apologies I did a search but can't find this out.
Last time I played with ICS Netflix was broken. Wondering if it has been fixed as yet ?
I know it works on stock and derivatives of stock also CM7 but have yet to find it working on CM9.
Still a no. Its going to be a problem until we can get better GPU drivers, most likely from an official Motorola ICS release. If we're lucky, we might be able to use something from another Tegra 2 phone like the G2X, but I wouldnt bet on it.
Thought that was the limitation but just checking as I haven't been keeping a close eye for the last couple of months and wanted to check.

let me clarify a bit...i use this lapdock from time to time, but i'm thinking i could use it alot more if i could update it.I use the google suite of apps such as sheets,drive,etc... i also like using chromecast on my note 4...but maybe the trusty atrix can handle that too?
I recommend ICSROM 1.4.6 that gives you the most functionality and ICS supported apps. Also, Webtop 3.0 is more stable and no resets of phone after using it.
Then update the kernel with the last 3.1 kernel from this Gdrive.
kernel-atrics
You will also want to update the ExtDispServiceD.apk from that Gdrive location as well.

Ty!looks promising!going to start reading on that tomorrow!
I wouldn't be using this if my LG G3 didn't take a face plant to a brick, but here we are. So I tried the ROM and kernel you recommended because I've been out of the Atrix game for a minute and have no idea what I'm doing (not that I did back then either). The ROM works pretty well except for the WiFi and it refuses to realize that it has superuser installed? There was ICSROM-v1.4.6.zip and ICSROM-v146_Rebuild.zip but you didn't mention the rebuild, so I figured you meant the first one and went with that.
Now as to the Kernel, you mentioned the last one. I figured you meant the last ICS one and not KK (last file in the list) so I tried that. However at boot the screen got a little shaky, then REALLY SHAKY, and then everything went black. So I wiped everything and reinstalled 1.4.6 and that's where I'm at now.
Please advise.
