How did you get 4.0.3 software on your phone, the S3 comes with 4.0.4 firmware!
Afaik if you`re rooted and use a custom kernel upgrades will not be installed. The best thing to do is download the new rom from www.sammobile.com/firmware and and unstall it with Odin. Or unroot and reflash the original stock rom and to try install the upgrade.
Before unrooting reset the flash counter with TriangleAway 1.70, available on playstore and chainfires`s thread.

thanks.
it is not a custom rom it is the original rom just rooted it
when i reset it it kept the root so actually i just wiped out all content but root was still there
any thing i can do ?
thanks

You have to flash the whole original rom or the original kernel and than do a factory reset. Reset the binary flash counter first, see 2nd post.

thanks,
are you saying that just because i rooted the device i will not be able to update it and i will have to reinstall it all ?
it sounds a bit odd, as most of the devices are rooted and as far as i know they are getting updates.
i wouldn't want to start it all over from scratch and flush a new rom etc if not really needed
and then what ?
every time i will need to do that ?
so what's the point in rooting it ?

Once you root it, and update root will be overwritten and is gone.
What for me works best is to buy MobileOdin Pro and flash the latest rom of your country and by doing so you keep root. Uninstall Kies (exept the usb drivers) and forget about that. Just update your phone yourself when an upgrade is available
Apps and data can be stored with Titanium Backup.

not sure i understood what you're saying, sorry...
could you please try again ?

- Go to www.sammobile.com/firmware and download your latest rom from your country
- Uninstall Kies except the usb drivers
- Buy Mobile Odin Pro
- Flash the rom you downloaded, extracted once and placed on your sd card (md5. file) with Mobile Odin
- Done

still i don't get why ?
why did it happen?
everybody roots the device - are all resetting and flushing on each update?

You have a different kernel, not stock so updates will not be installed
If you update yourself with Mobile Odin Pro you don`t need samsung ota updates.
When in the future opdates are available you download the rom from www.sammobile.com/firmware and flash it with Mobile Odin
Settings will not be removed, unless it`s a major update like jellybean.

no, i said it is the original rom just rooted

CF Root 6.4?

ZeevG, I am in the same situation as you.
Because of the method required to root the S3, we have the clockwork mod installed, I understand that this is the reason the update is not being installed.
I will be doing it manually today with Odin

thanks pal, it is now OK
i used Kies from PC and it went like charm - it is now updated and all as said is OK
thank you for your kind assistance and good will
cheers pal.

Oke i` am glad for you

I've also had the OTA update automatically download into my phone, and it keeps asking me if it's OK to install it - but as I'm rooted, I don't want to!
I'll upgrade it myself via Odin at some point, but short of continually pressing 'Later' every three hours for the rest of my life, how do I kill and fully delete this pending OTA update?

[Q] How to revertback from rooted ICS 4.0.3 to official Android 2.3.6

Hi,
I have installed Android ICS 4.0.3 in my galaxy s2 two days back, but now i want to go back to the company provided version Android 2.3.6 for india.
I tried the official firmware given in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
but i am experiencing some problem and the mobile doesn't goes beyond the initial start up screen where it says "click on android logo to start"
Please anybody can tell me how to install properly the official firmware android 2.3.6 DDKL1 for Samsung galaxy s2.
Please let me know the exact steps to do and the link for files to download.
Thanks in advance.
The files you have should work fine. Did you flash.as shown in the pictures in the OP of the thread you linked?
If your getting to the android start screen your phone should boot fine. Did you click on the android to start?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Yes i did click on the android logo, It doesn't do anything rather some android process is getting stopped and i am getting popups for it.
while installing 4.0.3 i included all PDA,Phone,CSC and Pit files in odin manager and there by re-partitioned also.
the official firmware link above gives me only the PDA tar file rest of the other files i searched and downloaded dunno whether it is correct. so is it possible for you to give the full set of tar files, if u have?? or direct me to some links where i can download those.
I used the 2.3.6 xila version from remorema at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444651. Just make sure you wipe system/cache and delvik cache before you install from zip in cwm. Then it all should be fine. This presumed you have a CWM.
Hope this helps

It's probably interfering with something if you're getting all of the process close.
I suggest a factory data reset if you can, close your phone and go to recovery (even if its a stock rom, the original android recovery will also work) and do a factory data reset and try again.
If that still doesn't work, try re-flashing again and see what happens.

If you have only 1 file then don't download any others. Just flash it as pda as shown in the picture of your linked thread.

I'll try these option and let you guy know in a day.
Hi, mani_vic2rious
If U want to revert back to ginger Stock roms, then this is your place :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444651
I recommend you to choose only from ginger ones, and remember thy are all from samsung, thus, not tweaked or anything. the only difference is that you can install them via CWM, for those who don't like to use Odin on windows PC.
Now if you want to stay in ICS 4.0.3 LP2 based rom, I recommend you Wanamlite V7.2 :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436817
U won't find more stable and functional than this.
Keys to succes in any rom installation :
1- Backup all your personal Stuff;
2- reboot into recovery (cwm) and wipe every single thing : datas, all caches (use the advance menu to wipe more things like dalvics and battery stats)
3- install your rom
4- then restore your personal stuff
As possible as you can : Always reinstall your apps from the begining and avoid restoring them from the backup you did, this always cause conflits and that's why people are always complaining, only do backup your contacts sms and other things like that.
and voilĂ , always stay clean as possible, and every thing will work smooth, you only need to choose the right rom.
I hope this helps!

Also make sure you have flashed back the old Gingerbread bootloaders from that thread.
I swear this gets asked daily...
I had some issues also. Reboot to stock recovery. Data wipe. Reflash stock firmware through Odin. That seemed to work for me
Hi kimifender,
The wanamlite installation says "signature verification failed" while installing, anything to do with it??
I've flashed data and cache and reverted to 2.3.6, now it is working fine. anyhow if i can able to install wanamlite i'll try that too. Please sugest me.
Thanks for all who have helped me in solving the issue
but now the only issue is my kies is not detecting the version. anything else i have todo for this??

Kies or Odin /CWM not both .

Hi friends.
I have galaxy SII and just yesterday i update to official ICS (Greece) .
I didn't see any difference so i rooted , in order to be able to install customs ROM.
So i did but i don't like it and i thought that is good to revert back to official ginger , for my country.
I download from sammobile the following firmware I9100BUKJ3 and i uploaded to my phone through Odin.Everything is uploaded fine.
But the problem begins at the boot .....The first wizard for configuration of the phone cannot executed, throws an error and the android cannot tapped.
What should i do in order to make the phone operation again?????

kies will not update firmware on rooted phone

Hi
I have rooted my SGS3 using the ALLINONE root from SGS3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488) and it works fine. About a month ago I got a notice about a firmware update and I installed it using kies. The root ofcause dissappeared but I used the toolkit to re-root the device. No problem so far.
a few days ago I got a new notice about another firmware update and wanted to install it using kies. Now however kies tells me that the device does not support upgrading (something with "initialising").
What can I do to get this firmware update installed?

Flashing stock rom wipes your settings. Make a choice, either get root and forget about Samsung updates or flash stock and forget about XDA, can`t have it both
Moved to Q/A
I am not in it for the ROMs but merely for the rooting. In general I like the stock-rom as it is but do need to have the device rooted in order to use some apps.

Last time, once you have root you can no longer install OTA`s, you can however upgrade witk Kies provided you have no custom kernel. You will loose root and you may loose all your settings. So it will be easier for you to download the new rom from sammobile and install it with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root and loose no settings and files.
I have the same doubts/problems...
Where do I find in SamMobile the ROMs? Are those the zip under OTA files?
Do I the use Odin? Is there a guide somewhere? (I did search and ended up in this post)
Cheers
P.S. I read on SamMobile something about not being flashable via recovery (correct?)
See my signature item 3 or 4 about Odin

Based on my experience you can take an update via Kies or OTA with root as long as the stock rom remains intact (no major mods). I have generally upgraded with a stock kernel. I have mostly lost root or at least had to fix permissions each time.
The settings have remained intact each time (titanium should take care of this any way)

What the heck to do now?

The root is there...my Titanium Backup is reporting that it can acquire root. The only problem is with the broken OTA functionality.
Did you stop and think you have the latest OTA, what's the point of downloading and flashing the same update every time you check...
Beside, you use ODIN to flash the latest update, whats the point of using the OTA function if every time it flashes an OTA you need to go and reflash cf-root...
Personally I use mobile ODIN after flashing and rooting so I don't need to keep re-installing root...

Thanks for the reply. This is more a workarround than a fix to the initial problem. I would like to use OTA even with a rooted phone.
Root fix?
Any further ideas on how to root the S3 on the ROM: I9300XXDLIH?
I have tried CF Root 6.4 using Odin 3.04 and 1.85, still no problems.
I'm not sure about the unchecking auto reboot when flashing the CF-Root 6.4 and then booting into recovery to prompt an install? I've booted into recovery but not sure about how to prompt it into an install?
I like the new 4.1.1 ROM, but disappointed my apps aren't running correctly because the phone's not rooted?
You have tobhave auto reboot so it flashes the files for root

well that's somehow half true in our case
..and why i say that
when i had ICS 4.0.4 following the advices from xda i did succeed properly the following:
1. Achieve fast & safe root
2. Preserving the capacity of my device to get OTA updates
(3. TriangleAway did work as a charm- did reset flawless the counter)
as a summary of the above said all was superb
now - with stock 4.1.1 with root performed ( in the same manner) i get a superb msg: "device modified"
and TriangleAway doesn't reset at all the counter anymore
i must say i did follow the others advice and did - using ODIN Mobile- revert to stock ICS 4.0.4 and then flashed Stock rom vodafone 4.1.1 to try to avoid loosing root and to be able to get some OTA updates
it seems that at this point i did fail somewhere when i used TitaniumBackup in restoring some apps:
1. this one asked me if to revert to the old Mac Address- and i accepted in order that google apps keep recognizing the device - did this wreck up the clean status of my just flashed phone?
2. or did i wreck up the phone's status by restoring from a backup ( i think i did a restore from a backup that included system backup too) - in this case before flashing- i should do backup only for the apps- without any system backup?

[Q] Help pleaseee used odin by accident, cant figure out what to do

Hi,
Me and my partner both got s3's recently his on contract mine on like buy as you view. Mine received the 4.1.1 update through the phone and after waiting a few weeks and still nothing on his we decided to update it via computer. I used odin because i saw on a post that thats what you were supposed to use and flashed it to 4.1.1. I then realised i had put the wrong version on (German one i think) and it was causing errors so we flashed again to 4.1.1 the UK version.
He is now on:
Android version 4.1.1
Baseband version I9300XXDLID
I do not know if that's correct but everything seems a ok.
However since then my phone received the 4.1.2 update and we want the same update on his phone. It does not find it on the phone. Since then i learned KIES is the samsung software not odin. No updates can be found via KIES cos the software isn't supported. I want to be able to use KIES with his phone again, can i reverse the odin update anyway?? I rang samsung and he told me it will be like that forever now and i will never be able to use KIES?
Can anyone assist me. I really want ot be able to update from KIES again instead of using odin.
Sorry if i sound like a noob im only good with apple technology haha!!
(edit)
P.S. My software is
Android version 4.1.2
Baseband version I9300XXELLA
we are both on Orange if thats any help? His came on Ice Cream Sandwich though and mine came on 4.1.1

Before flashing with odin try doing a factory reset on your device and then check if your device status is NORMAL to do that go to settings>about devoce>status>device status if it says normal then u are ok if it says modified try flashing the stock room with Odin and doing factory reset after the flash and if that dosnt work your device is maybe rooted and u need to unroot and do a triangle away here is the guide how to do that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613

A stock Samsung firmware can be flashed via Odin without any problems .

And when I check for updates on the phone it says latest update already installed but its definately still on 4.1.1. Ill update via odin to the orange 4.1.2 and see what happens
OFW is "official firmware"
JJEgan said:
Yes you want 100\% the exact firmware that came with the phone including CSC .
A stock Samsung firmware can be flashed via Odin without any problems .

Ypu can achieve this by using KIES.
Open kies
Start recovering and make sure you can put your cells serial number somewhere
Connect phone only when kies asks to
Voila, stock as used to.
Kind regards,
Thomas

Thats probably because 4.1.2 is not out yet for that region carrier .

Just curious.

im not bothered about loosing my user data but the option isnt there for me, it says phones that need this are listed below and the phone does not show. Not even if i put it in recovery mode. Any assistance would be great i am however just going to download some 4.1.2's today to try and fix it. I did notice however that when in download mode at the bottom it said something about multi CSC should it say this? LOL i wish i was more technologically savvy but i am literally only good at apple software. Wish id just waited Someone said to do one with BTU on the end and it should correct the CSC code? any idea if this is right?
I should however imagine it would delete all user data, people on other posts have said it was lost

Ok if u want the 4.1.2 update and u want to be able to use OTA i advise u to do flash the latest 4.1.2 room from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 there is even a guide there how to flash it , if your device shows modified status after the flash just reboot into Android Recovery by holding Vol UP + Home + Power till you see Samsung Galaxy S3 displayed on screen , then u will see the recovery options, do a factory wipe and wipe cache then reboot and u should now be able to receive OTA updates .
I am also using the same room and all is working ok OTA shows no new updates but i think when the updates hits i will be able to get it via OTA , kies is not working but i think u dont need to worry about it because u can always flash via Odin .
Here is a guide how to flash a room with working Kies and OTA
First u need to root your device u can do this by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Edit: When u finish rooting u should use this app its called triangle away http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114 and use it to reset the counter .
When u are done with triangle away then download this on your phone it available on play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manniakk.cscselector&hl=en
Run it and change your CSC to BTU this will factory reset your phone after u done that u should flash the UK room from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
When u finish that u should boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset , you should now be able to use Kies .
I am not sure this will work 100% but it should , if u could remember what was the CSC and room before you flashed the devices with odin you could flash that firmware.
Tell me if it worked.

You need to post the output of Odin or tell us where it failed.. without more information it's kind of hard to tell you what is going on.
If no more information I would just tell to try again

Are you positive you are in Download Mode? Also make sure you do not have Kies installed. Also might want to try to reinstall Samsung drivers after uninstalling them. After that reboot your computer and let them install

Sounds like a usb error. Try another
i got the usb error solved by deleting kies and installing seperate usb drivers. found 2 different .tar files to use in the pda section but cant locate a proper .pit file. the ones that i havve searched for lead to broken or bogus links.

@coltblue,
That pit file lacousier18 linked you should have worked if you are ODIN'ing the correct .tar restore file. You didn't say which Android build you are currently on while trying to restore back to 4.1.2. If you ever installed stock factory builds of 4.3+, then you won't be able to ODIN back to 4.1.2 because your bootloader would have been locked... (you probably know, but any factory stock firmware 4.3 and above permanently locks the bootloader for our Note 2's).
If you were on 4.1.2 bootloader when things got messed up, then you should be able to restore your phone back to 4.1.2 and reroot with CASUAL.
If you were on factory stock 4.3 MJ9 (and just rooted) when things went wrong, you'll have to restore back to MJ9 and root again with saferoot.
There's currently no root method for factory stock 4.4.2.
Either way, you can find Droidstyle's guide at this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34891181
He has all the links for files needed to restore your phone back to 4.1.2 or 4.3.
If Droidstyle's guide helps you, please make sure to hit the thanks button for him. He spent a lot of time putting the guide together for us.
Good luck.

i have tried i605vrufnd7 , and KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_ , but not the other 2. i coouldnt find a working link for the others. i shall try them and report back thank you.
success ! odin finally accepted stock 4.1.1 but showed a warning triangle saying not official software on the phone screen. ran 4.4.2 through odin and it worked first try. phone restarted , booted up and loaded 4.4.2 . never lost any settings contacts or data! the big thing i did different was using odin on my desktop with a new usb cable and using the usb 3.0 port. Thanks for all the help !

Glad to hear that you got it restored. It sounds like you were initially running factory 4.4.2 Kit Kat when you had tried to root it to start with.
If you're re on stock 4.4.2 VRUFND7 , then unfortunately - - you can not root the device or unlock the bootloader because there's no rooting method or bootloader unlock method that works right now. You also won't be able to use Odin to downgrade to any of the other Android builds because of lock downs implemented with the 4.4.2 Kit Kat software. The good news is that your phone should run fine on stock 4.4.2 and you can use it again.
Keep your eyes open for new rooting methods.... you never know, someone might figure out how to root it yet.
