Confused! I have a sound file on the SD card that I used to use for the notification sound of my prior phone (shift). All the sound files need to be in a dir under system/media/audio/ notifications. I tried copy paste via Astro but the permissions prevent the paste action. How do I get the file moved to where the LTE is expecting it?
I can get it to show up as a ringtone choice. But when I go to settings, sounds, default notification, it is not there.
I have had some issues with astro lately when using it to 'move' (copy paste). Just a hunch, but try doing this using Root Explorer.
Solved:
After failing to copy via all file explorer apps I connected to my computer with debug mode on. I was able to copy paste to the notifications folder & now the phone lists it as a choice. I made it my default & all is well. Lot of work for a simple task?

If you are not r00ted, or S-OFF, HTC Dev unlocked, you will not be able to use Astro or Root Explorer (my personal favorite) to move the files to the correct location, so you would need to download the notification.
Settings => Sound => Notification Sound
Then, you will see an option called "Shifter" which might be the same.
If not, click on the [Get More] button in the upper-right hand corner, to download whatever you like.
If this fails, then you can connect to your computer via USB ~ TWRP Recovery has a great mount option as well... ~ and you can copy and paste at will.

Anyone have issues with custom ringtones after rooting?
I had a custom ringtone in the mpga format that was working fine before I rooted. After rooting my phone, applying the lag fix, applying the gps fix, and installing ADW launcher, I can no longer use it as a ringtone.
I can navigate to the file in Astro, but the option to set it as a ringtone is greyed out. Anyone experience this?
Oh, I also clicked on "Fix Permissions" in Rom Manager and it went through the process (I figured it would have a prompt or something), don't know if this has caused it or not, is there a way to reverse whatever it did?

I have since tried putting the file in a folder named ringtones in my root sdcard directory and have had no luck getting the file recognized.

I make custom .mp3 ringtones on my laptop then transfer them over to the phone thru Windows Explorer.
1. Connect your phone to the PC via USB
2. On your phone, it should show that USB is connected on the drop down menu...click on it and mount
3. Now open My Computer on your PC and double click to open your internal sdcard (phone memory)
4. There should be a folder called "media." Double click to open that folder and then then double click the folder called "audio"
5. Create a new folder called "ringtones" (for custom ringtones) and another new folder called "notifications" (for custom message tones)
6. Now drag your audio files into the corresponding folders and you should be able to choose your custom ringtones/message tones through the phone settings
There are also apps in the market that enable you to create your own ringtones on the phone using the music in your library (Ringdroid)

Thank you! That fixed my issue. I just needed to have the ringtone folder in the right directory. Kinda strange it didn't make me do that before the rooting though. Nonetheless, thank you very much for your help!

none is causing trouble. To delete, you first of course need root. mount the system. then you can delete and add and just reboot to have it take affect. Navigate to the directories below to delete or push your new sounds over to them.

Is it easier to use some other file manager? Or some app to chmod? Or is that terminal only?
you can use root explorer. es file manager, is that a root browser? if so you have to mount read/write before you can edit.

yeah in post 2 i mentioned you need a reboot for it to take affect. glad this is solved haha.
you will need to root, make sure you have moto mediascape installed on your computer so you have the drivers and software installed,
after you have rooted, you simply open up a folder that is within your atrix's memory, it will state "RINGTONES" just slip your ringtone in there and go ahead open up ringtones from your phone and set it to whatever you have installed.

i run a backup sesseion yesterday with the build-in app "back up & restore" on my ICS 4.04. i had no chance to choose "usb storage" even my mobile was connected with my laptop so i keep it on "internal storage".
but i can't find the backup now on there. There are just a few folders but only some KB's in size.
Where put the app my backup in ?
It's in a folder called .semc-fullbackup
and where is that folder? do I have an access without root?

its in internal memory and its hidden so use explorer and then youll see it.

You're supposed to connect a USB flash drive TO your phone, not your phone to a computer. It works, i've tried it.
To view the folders, open them through your computer when connected via a data cable; if you try to view them on your phone via a file explorer they don't show up.
Edit: To get Es file explorer to show hidden files/folders go to: Settings --> File Settings --> Show hidden files
It's great that you can do a backup to a USB flash drive, but you don't get the USB on-the-go cable in the box and most people wouldn't know they exist, or where to get one (I've never seen one on sale in a shop).
(For those that don't know, you can get official Nokia or Samsung ones dirt cheap from Amazon and probably eBay etc).
I use MyBackupPro and found that it was impossible to transfer the folder contents to another folder on my Mac desktop using MTP. Certain files just won't/can't copy. A total joke.
However, I can use a file manager to copy everything in the backup folder to a USB drive via the cable (well, actually via a LiveDock as the phone can't power an awful lot of flash drives) but that's a right PITA.
To be honest, I know Google can now backup app settings but the whole thing is a mess. When you reset, you don't always get the apps reinstalling (even if starts to do it seemingly fine) and I'm not confident it would work if I needed to rely on it. And even less so if I broke my phone and replaced it with another one, where the backed up data wouldn't reinstall either.
Frankly, despite showing off some really cool features in Android 4.1 at Google I/O today, the one thing they've not really taken much care of is making backups. Why not let me make a backup to my Google Drive storage space? Why not back up all applications and data, including apps installed on the SD card (or internal drive) and also backup widget data, home screen icon positions etc?
Even rooted devices are hit and miss when it comes to backups, and most people don't root their devices - or may have rooted the device they have now, but can't always root the device when changing phone or updating the OS.
Anyway, that was a much longer rant than I intended to write. Going back to the start, the backup app for most people is pretty pointless!!

I used ES file explorer to see the folder I said, my phone was rooted, maybe that's the reason the folder was visible by default

Just checked and you're right, ES file explorer can see the folders (my phone is not rooted), you just have to enable the option in settings.
Es file explorer: Settings --> File Settings --> Show hidden files

I'm not rooted, what I did was:
- connect the phone to you computer
- adb shell
- cd sdcard1
- ls -la
Then you should see the .semc-fullbackup folder. So you need to have android SDK installed, I'm not sure if you need to have developer mode enabled, but I did have it enabled.

This requires root!
The sounds (by default) are stored in /system/media/audio/ui/
!NOTE: This is for system/OS sounds. Notifications etc are not stored here!
Screen touch sound is "TW_Touch.ogg" and back and menu button sounds are "S_HW_Touch.ogg"
If you would like to change the sound to something else, find a mp3 or something that you would like to use then convert it to a .ogg format.
Can be done on this website: htt$p://audio.on$line-convert.$com/convert-to-ogg *Remove $ symbols from URL
Then rename your new .ogg to either "TW_Touch.ogg" or "S_HW_Touch.ogg" dependent on what sound you would like to change.
Place the .ogg file on your sd card and move it the mentioned directory and overwrite (delete) the original .ogg file (backup first).
Then remember to set the permissions of the .ogg file to "rw-r--r--" and make sure it is named correctly, it is case sensitive.
Reboot system and enjoy your new sounds :good:
I tried everything that you said and it doesn't work for me. When i try to move/overwrite the file it tells me "Cannot copy or move file". When i try to delete the orginal file first it tells me "Warning - Could not delete". I am on stock rom and rooted. When i try to change permissions to the original files it gives me error "unable to chmod /system/media/...bla bla". What to do?

Your root has failed, download root checker to see.
If it fails you will need to re-root with CF-Root.

I am running into an issue. My phone has been verified as rooted by rootchecker. The only way I can see the root directory on the phone is with Astro File Manager. Once in the correct folder, I can see the TW_TOUCH.OGG file and have a replacement. However I can't write to the folder. I can't even rename the original. Checking the properties of the file I don't see any notations that the file or folder are write protected. I assume the entire drive is per se with the exception of the \SDCARD directory.
Is there a better tool for doing all this? I'd like to have something I can use from a PC as well.

First you need to Root.
There are good guides around here.
I'd recommend ES File Explorer
Download it then
Open ES File Explorer
Menu > Settings > Root settings.
Check Root Explorer
Click Grant when SU popup appears.
Check Up to Root
and Check Mount File System.
Now it will copy succesfully to the system folder.
Slightly easier
No need to do renaming. Save desired oggs to your ext sd card.
Use Root Browser (ES doesnt seem to go to system no matter)
Use Root Browser. Go to your ext sd card. Long press on the desired .ogg. Copy it.
navigate to the folder l /system/media/audio/ui/ as instructed above.
Click paste. If your file is named correctly it will ask 'replace?' click yes. Do the same for the other file.
Reboot. You have to reboot. How it still plays water droplets before rebooting Idk. But reboot and you back to clicky goodness. (who thought of that water droplet. Chinese water torture.)
Edit: I attached the two files. Change from .txt to .ogg.

Ok so i ran into a problem. Im using es file explorer and i accidentally changed my keyboard tap sound without backing up the original one. I also didnt look at the permissions before i changed it. Can someone tell me what the permissions are? Thx in advance. Im on a Samsung Galaxy s3. Im working on turning it into a halo themed phone, complete with halo system sounds and even halo themed icons.

Rw-r-r. In a grid of 1 to 9, top left to bottom right, 1,2,3,4 ticked. 5,6,7,8,9 unticked. Should be immediate but if not, just reboot.

I believe all of us here like the android that we can do what ever we want with our device,
I personally dislike some of the sound I hear when my device power on and when I unlock the
screen and when I touch and select Menus and item within android.And also the power up sound

Please kindly do a backup in case things go bad for you.
Using the APP Root browser (lite from the google play) or any file editing App that has root access you can
change the UI sound that you hear on any android powered device.
For instance i have tried most of the ROMs in the forums.I just download a Custom ICS,JB ROM
And then navigate to the system file in the zip file on my computer and then to media and copy the
files overthere to my device.
LET GET STARTED
1.Connect your device your computer or laptop and turn on USB connection
2.ROM zip file >>>> system >>>> media >>> audio{alarms,notifications,ringtones,ui}
3.create a folder in the storage (system sd card or external sd card) to copy the files from the
Android ROM you downloaded
4.copy the files from the audio folder into the folder you created
5.Run Root browser and navigate to folder you created and open it and multi select each
of the sound files (.ogg).(it does not work selecting the whole folder you will get an error)
navigate back and go to system folder
System >>>>media>>>>>audio and open and paste the files from the previous respective folder you
copied from earlier.( YOU MIGHT HAVE DUPLICATES THE ONLY WAY TO DETECT SUCH IS THE DATE )
6. Now with the UI sounds there is three of them 1.the unlock sound, 2.the lock sound,
3.the screen selection sound. this files are easy to identify for instance most of them are
labelled as such eg. lock.ogg for phone lock, unlock.ogg for screen password unlock sound and
mostly for Samsung it is TW_Touch.ogg for the screen touch selection.
7. You can repeat all the steps for the other audio files. once done you can select and play
the sound within the root browser. you can also copy sounds from notification and ringtones
and use it for any of the UI sounds and vice versa. These also increase the amount of sound
on your device.
8 .If any of the sounds interest you and want to change your UI sound, all you have to do is exactly rename
the original UI sound eg.1TW_Touch.ogg which was the original and then the sound that interest
you for the touch selection to be TW_Touch.ogg and reboot your Device.
9. Same goes with the power sound(powerom.wav) which is located in different folders on
some ROMS within the system folder. (personal i deleted the power on sound I dont like it)
On the current CM10 ROM the only hackable is user interface sound (Effect_tick.oog) is the touch sound. Which is located
