[Q] Enabling Swap - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hey,
how would I go about enabling swap on Entropy512's DD for the US version? Rather, assuming root access, how would I go about enabling swap, period? I just got a "class 10" (with a write speed of pitiful) 32 GB card that I want to play with.
Also, how would I go about scripting/enabling ZRAM?
Thanks!

Or just point me in the right direction so I can f* up my player on my own time...
Or, how different is the Android kernels from Linux kernels?

I guess only one who can enable swap Is person who made the kernel.

[DEV] The project to port Android(froyo) on S8500 (8530)

Hi All.
It's my thread - port Android on Wave S8500(also S8530).
Wellcome developers and designers.
Last state of project:
06/13/2011 Now working on Android 2.3.3 (Source GB for GT-I9000 and M130K)
not working - modem and GPS.
04/04/2011 Memory allocation now is correct!
05/11/2011 I have full schematic for phone
and we're ready to get a fully working kernel.
Full decriptions of GPIO is attached.
source for kernel and initramfs here:

Please expect not too much from me.
1.
My other handsets are from 2006... NEVER hold Android handset in my own Hand...
2.
I'm Windows User.
Linux/Unix ... I know only 1 or 2 Commands
I've never formated my SD Card nor any Harddrive with Linux ext4, JFS, ReiserFS or XFS
3.
I NEVER worked with IDA or something similar.
Installed yes, but then my Head exploded
Brain too small.
4.
Many missing parts...
Why I should kill my alive handset, as I have no real chance to reanimate it...
- no Riff Box
- no PCB to play with
I AM NOT the right man to port Android nor to find Security hole
You can make this post sticky.
NO joke, expect not too much from me. We can learn together... but this takes time.
Many time. Months, maybe years...
Best Regards
after many many variant, i found the right boot+sbl+param.lsf for kernel message output.
this is my last bootlogo.
how it can be seen, there is a problem with memory allocation.

Great of you to keep us posted! \o/
hmmm... as a matter of interest - I noticed you're using kernel 2.6.35.7, when I look at the original I9000 source that's 2.6.29....
what does that source say as to why it failed in bootmem.c @ line 341?
Not enough memory, permissions, wrong offset?

You mean to tell me that Meteor bundled a 512Mb memory card?
I have 4Gb on mine...this memory thing is a bit mystifying dontcha think, despite the discussion on another thread about the nand chipset.... on the one hand some say its 256Mb, others say 512Mb...
I tried the versions 2.6.32 and 2.6.35.
I post sbl+boot+param.lfs and config file for kernel making.
Last time u had problem with lcd_rst pin..did u figure that out?

No i mean Meteor gave me some (seeminly non existant) version of the wave that has 512 internal storage. Im pretty sure its meant to have 2-4gb at the minimum.

Wave S8500 have 2Gb of internal storage which are partitioned (bada 1.0.2):
-about 512Mb for messages (mail+sms);
-about 420Mb for user files;
-about 1Gb for system files (os+apps+widget+java)

To adfree,
1)now the steps bada->android or android->bada is only via JTAG.

We can think about running SBL or any other bootloader (anybody with sources for that?) through the FOTA hole as I described in the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020444
This way we don't need JTAG for initial flashing. It'd be also good to perform testing without touching BADA in the NAND, but we either need to reorganize partitions or boot from SD card
Best Regards,
mijoma
I think an combination will lead to success... so work together.
At this status it is maybe tooo risky to play without JTAG.
As we not know, how Android will handle Memory...
Okay, correction. I don't know.
In worst case scenario you need JTAG to reanimate Wave...
We have 2 steps/parts.
Android part.
Display, Kernel, Memory, etc...
This part is mandatory in my opinion.
Then second part, how to start Android. Then there are several theories...
BootLoader, No BootLoader, FOTA... inject via JTAG into RAM...
internal Memory or Dual Boot from SD Card...
Anyway, without proper modified Android part we can't use all our Security Holes.
As more infos we have, better, as more working solution we have.
So more chance to improve something.
At the moment we can only improve Video Quality.
Best Regards
Mijoma,
I totally agree with you, maybe this is the way to deploying android on S8500.
But now,i think about build working kernel for our s8500.
Maybe you helping with analize memory init on original bootloader?
like this - http://code.google.com/p/jetdroid/wiki/OriginalDramInit
Regards
Seems like using mijoma's discovery you should be able to replace booting and maybe make it to boot from SD card using a open source booter a compatible android kernel with selfmade drivers.
Maybe that could be the way, sadly we'd lose internal storage since we wouldn't be touching bada partition, anyway Android should be working fine from a SD card, It does properly on other handsets which internal storage is nothing more than a microSD card instead of flash memory.
I think losing 2GB on internal and XMB on microSD is a good deal for having android on our handsets. Happily I got 16GB SD on my wave xP. Anyway once you achieved that we could gather to use the internal flash memory partition
Jioma I suggest you to work with adfree (along your knowledge) and oleg_k they're our wave masters, baybe you together could gather to achieve this great project. I require you to work on this oh please jioma=(
Ok thats great news! Finally we have a method of booting other platforms on the Wave. What we need is as much information on the s5800 chipset as we can get so we know exactly what to compile and what drivers are needed in the linux kernel for android. Someone get in touch with Cyanogen mod and ask him for help and offer him a wave or something ha.

Swapper Configuration? :-D Do you mean by any chance the app "Swapper"? Because I can't find any "swapper configuration" app anywhere...
Btw..: after enabling swap file with swapper I'm still unable to see any free swap memory within the terminal (free shows still 0 swap)
Although - it seems my phone is working better now... Placebo?

I am not the expert in these things. After installing swapper and enabling swap on the sd-card, my phone became very responsive. On clicking home button, main screen with widgets and icons appears instantly, no matter in which program or apps I am in. So I guess it did made the phone faster and responsive.

[Q] X10 - Using SD card as Swap File

Hi
I would like to know if anybody knows of a way to enable the use of a swap file on the SD Card in the Xperia X10.
Using Memory Info & check swapfile that checks compatibility for SWAPit RAM Expander I get:
Code:
Your device has not accept an swapfile.
Your device is not compatible .... you should try
to find a custom kernel for your Device via google
because your device manufacturer has locked the
swap-function in your device!
Using Swapper 2 I get:
Code:
->Enabling swap (file) FAIL
->
swapon: /sdcard/swapfile.swp: Function not implemented
I currrently have Z's newest custom kernel installed.
Per haps the stock kernel supports swap files? (I wouldn't think that it would, since Z probably wouldn't remove that...)
As you know this device has very little RAM (384MB...) available to itself. I don't care about the low speed of swapfiles or the card dying on me, I just want multitasking ability. (I'll buy a Class 10 card to make it bearable)
If anyone has some ideas, I'd really appreceate it.
Thanks

[Q] Question about zram and swap

Hi there, i already searched and i know what swap and zram are aswell their differences and all that... but what i want to know and i was unable to find is can i use both of them? I mean can i use hardswap with a partition of lets say 512 on a class 10 card and use zram at the same time? Will i have anymore benefits using both of them if i can or it will just slow down the device/doesnt bring any benefits at all using both?
I am asking because i am running omega 53v and yank55 kernel and in the kernel there both option, i am just wondering if it is worth enabling swap and zram or i have to choose 1 of them.

[GUIDE][SWAP]Increase virtual ram easily in simple steps

Hello all, as some of you know that there is a way that lets you increase your device's ram capacity, and that is by swap, well am here to give you simple and easy steps to enable swap on your device.I only tested this on few devices so don't complain if it didn't work.
I'am not responsible for any damage could happen, you are doing it at your own risk.
Prerequisites
1-An android phone (duhh )
2-Must be rooted.
3-Busybox xbin. (Read below)
4-Kernel Must Support Swap
Tested devices
-Galaxy Ace S5830
-Galaxy Ace S5830i
-Galaxy Ace 2
-Galaxy S4 (don't ask why!)
-Galaxy S4 mini
-Galaxy Ace Plus
-Sony Xperia Sola
Tested android versions
-2.3.x
-4.0.x
-4.1.x
-4.2.2
-4.3.0
-4.4.2 (got some problems)
-4.4.4 (got some problems)
kitkat users may find a problem that swap has a limit of 50 MB or 150 MB ( Caused by the new 4.4.x kernel Just Try It)
Installing busybox xbin
{If you are not sure what is this then just go to how to swap
And if swap didn't work the come back here and apply the steps}
1-Download busybox from playstore or buy the pro version
2-Run busybox
3-Wait for the loading
4-Then normal install or smart install in case you are in pro.
5-When done installing restart your phone
How to swap
1-Install simple root swap
2-Run it and give it root permission
3-Specify the size of swap file (how much MB you want to add as virtual ram) (big size needs more time)
4-Create swap file
5-Check enable at boot
6-Click on
7-Check if the swap worked
8-Enjoy...

Since the swap file in made on the SD Card, No, it will not damage your system but there is a high chance it can affect the SD Card. If you have an SD Card, then yes you can try this on Auto Navi System with Android 4.0.3. Make sure to have a class 8 or greater SD Card to get maximum speed. Hope I Helped
Thx for your answer! I will try it after I buy another SD class! I hope that will make my unit a little smoother!

The file is there, it has the size that I choose in "Simple Root Swap". I tried 200 MB and 100 MB.
The "Info" tab of "Simple Root Swap" tells me however:
Status Swap:
Total Swap: 0MB
Used Swap: 0MB
Free Swap: 0MB
When I open a terminal emulator "free" tells me 0 swap, "swapon -a" tells me that /etc/fstab does not exist...

Since you have followed all the instructions perfectly, it must be the kernel. Rafael's kernel does have swap support though.
