Hello - I come from a Galaxy Nexus and love the S3, but the black backgrounds for the Exchange Email inbox and SMS inbox are not my favourites and I would prefer dark text on a light background. (I know the email messages themselves are black on white - that is good, but I would prefer the inbox to look this way as well)
I cannot find any way to change this within the standard functionality of the current firmware. Is it possible to do this without flashing a whole new ROM? (I have rooted the device but am on a standard build still)
Many thanks for any pointers.
Regards
Neil Gardner
For SMS inbox: open the messaging app, press menu button, tap "Settings", tap "Background style". Done. This is on stock. Not sure about the Email though.
Thanks for the reply - that does change the SMS history just fine - I hadn't looked at the SMS app too closely as it's mainly the email that's frustrating. Still no progress there unfortunately.
Cheers - N

Hi guys
I've installed Yahoo Mail for my email and Go Sms Pro for my texts. When i get a text or email, i don't get double notifications in the notification bar, however, i really miss the little bubble indicator in the top right hand corner of the stock email & sms apps that let you know how many missed messages you have (i prefer this to the notification bar).
Does anyone know if it's possible to get these on anything other than Samsung's own crappy versions?

No it is Samsung's. The stock Android apps are far different and don't feature notifications.
You could use something like ADWLauncher which will allow it on certain apps.
Well I have K-9 as my email app and I also have Go Launcher which has a plugin for notifications and it does show the email count for K-9 so you could give that a go.

install a program from the market called adwnotifier
I have two email accounts that I receive push notifications for (hotmail, gmail).
When I open my email shortcut that I placed on my home screen, it defaults to the gmail account. Is there any way to make a shortcut that goes directly to the combined view (to show mail from both accounts in the same view)? I find it slightly annoying to have to switch back and forth to view my unread emails.
BTW: I'm running Xtreme's Senseless ICS ROM
Thanks

It shouldn't be that hard to figure out but it is. Why is there no clear cut way to show the combined inbox? Luckily another thread explained it...You have to create a widget and the widget can be selected to show the combined view, this will give you consistent combined view when you click on it. I just upgraded to CyanogenMod 4.2.2 Jellybean and it has the same deficiency. You'd think that there would be an option somewhere. Find a Google developer to fix this please.
Hi,
with stock SGS 3 messaging app when I receive sms, on my lockscreen there is an envelope on which I can "click" and unlock directly to messaging app. I find go sms pro better than stock messaging app but with this app I'm missing the envelope on lock screen after receiving sms. Does anybody know how to make envelope on lock screen work with go sms pro?
Impossible
Typed on my Galaxy S 3 ♡
Seconded. The lockscreen notifications will only work with the stock messaging application. You may be able to cobble something together using WidgetLocker though - it allows similar functionality, but I don't know if they've managed to get it working with GMail yet.
You could disable GoSms' function to suppres the stock SMS notification, but a) you'd get TWO SMS notifications then, and b) clicking that envelope would get you to the stock SMS app, still.
Personally, I am using LockMenu and have one of the unlocking sliders configured to launch GoSms.
That in combination with GoSms' "New SMS popup" works very well for me.
That's a pity. Anyway, thx guys for workarounds!
Hi Friends,
I have HTC ONE M8 AT&T phone. Whatsapp does not show notification badges. Also, email shows notification badge but when I get into the email and come out without reading email, the notification badge is gone though there are still unread messages. Can someone help fix this please.
Thanks & Regards,

If you are referring to the little number on the icon on the home screen... then there's nothing to fix. It's working as designed.
That isn't actually a stock android feature. HTC (and Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc) customizes their home screen launcher to display unread count "badges" for the apps that are built in (email, messages, etc), but couldn't possibly do so for other 3rd party apps. In the case of email, the badge clears when you go into the app regardless of the number of unread messages. (It's more of a "you have this many unread since you last opened the app.)
If you want more functionality, you could use a different launcher (such as Nova Launcher) and a plugin (telsaunread) that supports more badges. I have no idea if "Whatsapp" is supported by nova/telsaunread, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out.
Edit: I just checked and nova launcher with teslaunread does explicitly support whatsapp.

Hi,
I also have a problem with my Icons on the top left-hand corner of the screen on my HTC One M8...
I have just launched the new Update "Sense 6.0" and now I can't see the Icons of WhatsApp, SMS, E-mails. etc. on the top left-hand corner of the screen, when the screen of my phone is locked (when I get a new message).
Do you know how I can turn it back on ?
Sam
I hate that every notification except email has the same sound. How can I change so that text messages have their own notification? Right now text messages and all other random notifications share the same ringtone so I never know if I got a text message or something else.

It doesn't work. If you change it, it changes it for all notifications. Not just texts.
I just figured it out.

I had been looking for this setting for days now and I just stumbled upon it. When you are editing a contact go to the bottom of the contacts information and hit the "ADD ANOTHER FIELD" button. There you will see the ability to add the "Message Tone" field as well as specify a "Vibration Pattern" if wanted. Not sure why they didn't put the Message Tone option on the contact by default.

Mind blow.
Dude, just set any ringtone for notifications via phone settings - it'l be your sms ringtone AND for any other applications having opportunity to create notifications you should open those applications, go their settings and find there option notifications and change notifications sound directly for that application. Logic!
Binrob, I get what you are after because I did a google search for the very same thing. No one here seems to get it.
What happens is all these other apps utilize the same NOTIFICATION sound as your text messages (like Facebook, or playing back-and-forth board games). Binrob and the rest of us want our TEXT messages TO BE DIFFERENT sounding than all the others. I don't want to look at my phone every time i get a notification, but i do want to look at my phone every time someone texts me. There doesn't seem to be a way to customize SMS/TEXT to its own notification sound. Android needs to fix this.
You've answered everyone's question! This should show up #1 on Google search!

Has there been updates since to change to separate notification for all contacts?
I get this issue and NEED them to fix as well! I don't want fb messenger and text messaging and any other notification to have the same sound. I want to know what app the notification is for WITHOUT unlocking and looking at my phone. Also, on my s5 I was able to change my led color for specific apps. If it blinking red I knew it was a text. Blinking green fb message. Blinking blue fb notification. Etc! Please add those back!
You CAN set the sound for messages, go to settings, notifications, advanced ......... choose messages, more settings (at the bottom of the screen), and the next screen is where you change the sound that is made. Not exactly user friendly though!
I think the answer is as simple.as: go to your message app, top right hit: more, Then go to settings and set whatever ringtone you want to have under notifications. I guess this should be what you are looking for.
Cheers

notificaton tone in message+
The comment that you can set message tones In contacts is correct except that apps like message+ , at least on the Galaxy , ignore that and use their own tones
I just found it....
open messages on the right top corner click there and pick customize ando under tones and there u can pick whatever ringtone for only SMS....
FOR SAMSUNG S9/S9+. To have a specific sound for you messages, go to messaging app/setting/notifications/general notications must be off/emergency alerts must be off. Go to new messages and choose your preferred sounds.
