If you want keep root just update an reroot with CF Root, if you want all stock first use triangle away and reset the counter and update with Kies. Ota will not be installed because of custom recovery.

Thanks mate it's not easy to use android when I just went from ios

Hmm Triangle Away did not work? my phone still seems to be modified. I used the app and everything worked throug.

my fault, everything is ok now. Thanks again

Glad to help mate

Just got an OTA myself..but it won't install due to Root. Think it is the same root as the OP. No custom Kernels.
Pondering if I use the Kies method...will I lose data/apps etc?

When you get a update you will not loose data, you will however have to reroot with CF Root. Doesn`t matter if you update by OTA or through Kies.

I did reset the flash counter with Triangle Away with no luck? the phone seems to be modified.hmmm Gee?

Triangle away just reset the flash counter in download mode and nothing more
If you want to change the "modified" in about phone, there is 2 solution:
1- flash a stock rom with odin
2- find the thread which explain how to do it by playing with rom backup

Reset the flashcounter, update rom and do a facory reset in backup and restore. If that doesn`t work flash stock rom with Odin and do a factory reset afterwards.
Thought you wanted yo keep root?

Ah i see ))

If you want to keep root, update and afterwards reroot with CF Root. Done.

Thats what i have done

Problem:Your device is not supported to update using kiesh

Hey guys,i have a problem with my S3(international version).I had flashed to cm10 and then wanted to return to stock firmware earlier on today so i downloaded xxblfb firmware(latest for my country) and i flashed it using odin.Everything went as per plan, now i am on stock rom and my phone status is normal too and not modified but when i connect to kies it says that my device does not support updating using kies. Why is that and how can i fix it?.Please help me out.
Have you used Triangle Away when you were rooted? Did you factory-reset your phone?
Go to Download mode and check what the binary counter says.

Oh ok cool thanks.Any other way?..n wat are the risks?
Your first question is
Is their an update for your phone your phone not any phone and updates have codes that must match what you present to Kies .
Simple solution is to join XDA and flash stock rom as and when or wipe your phone install the original firmware and stay with Samsung for updates .

I don't think so, but it's worth a shot. It would at least theoretically be possible for the phone to report the Flash Counter to Kies.

Not only the simplest but the most efficient and quickest way. And of course most customizable one (modem of your choice, ...)

kies will not update firmware on rooted phone

Hi
I have rooted my SGS3 using the ALLINONE root from SGS3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488) and it works fine. About a month ago I got a notice about a firmware update and I installed it using kies. The root ofcause dissappeared but I used the toolkit to re-root the device. No problem so far.
a few days ago I got a new notice about another firmware update and wanted to install it using kies. Now however kies tells me that the device does not support upgrading (something with "initialising").
What can I do to get this firmware update installed?

Flashing stock rom wipes your settings. Make a choice, either get root and forget about Samsung updates or flash stock and forget about XDA, can`t have it both
Moved to Q/A
I am not in it for the ROMs but merely for the rooting. In general I like the stock-rom as it is but do need to have the device rooted in order to use some apps.

Last time, once you have root you can no longer install OTA`s, you can however upgrade witk Kies provided you have no custom kernel. You will loose root and you may loose all your settings. So it will be easier for you to download the new rom from sammobile and install it with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root and loose no settings and files.
I have the same doubts/problems...
Where do I find in SamMobile the ROMs? Are those the zip under OTA files?
Do I the use Odin? Is there a guide somewhere? (I did search and ended up in this post)
Cheers
P.S. I read on SamMobile something about not being flashable via recovery (correct?)
See my signature item 3 or 4 about Odin

Based on my experience you can take an update via Kies or OTA with root as long as the stock rom remains intact (no major mods). I have generally upgraded with a stock kernel. I have mostly lost root or at least had to fix permissions each time.
The settings have remained intact each time (titanium should take care of this any way)

Cool ... I should have mentioned I have always had a stock recovery if sticking with stock Rom. Because as you say the updates don't work with non stock recovery

USB Jig download counter

Hello,
I am trying to reset the download counter, but the jig not working. It has ICS on it so i know it wont work. Can i flash back to Android 3.x then use the jig and then let kies update it to the latest version. Whats the risk of flashing back? Can it brick my device?
Thanks as always for your time.

Since you are on ICS, Use Triangle Away app by chainfire to reset you download counter, there is no need for jig or downgrade.
good luck

Android 3.x codename Honeycomb is for tablets, You mean 2.3.x Gingerbread.
http://hotfile.com/dl/146025707/1b5fefc/GT-I9100_OLD_BOOTLOADER.tar.html
This is old gingerbread bootloader (flash as PDA in Odin). You don't need to flash whole gingerbread rom. Operation is reasky but using Triangle away also is dangerous becouse this app modify some bootloder hidden partition entries.

So once its rooted how to get it back to its unrooted state? As i want to take it into CEX and sell it tomorrow.
Which method did you use to root your phone?
Reset binnary counter in this way or another, format internal sd and flash stock firmware with Odin. Wipe data/factory reset.
i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
I have not rooted the phone. I had the MUIUI or what ever its called ROM. So i went to sammobile and downloaded the official rom and then just flashed it over with odin. So it should be unrooted now and back to stock. I think!

Yeah it should be unrooted now. If you want to use the triangle away app, you need root.
There are easy root and unroot methods for ICS already
so how risky is it going back to 2.3.5 using the jig then doing the update through kies?
The same as every flash. But not all gingerbread roms have old bootloders. With newones you wiil not be able to reset counter with jig. It must be version with old bootloder.

Seems you like it that way. it's risky, but should fine, if nothing goes wrong.
PS: I will sure be the first person to laugh at you, if anything bad should happen to your phone!

because you are rooted?
triangle away does NOT change the device status from modified to original, to do so you have to flash a stock ROM and unroot etc.

same issue here on my wife's phone, i was thinking about flashing the same rom with odin, but unroot the phone before that, maybe the status will change.
flashing with odin now, will it automatically do a factory reset or can she keep her data?

[Q] Boot Loop after 4.2.1 Update

So it seems I have done it again, got into a pickle with my Galaxy S3. So here is what I did. I updated the device using Odin to the latest leak of 4.2.1 and I was playing around in the settings and I think I was fiddling with the mimic duplicate screen and set the resolution to 1080p, its a new setting in the developer options of 4.2.1. After that is froze and went into boot loop. I have tried re installing the firmware, no resolution. I also tried a cache wipe, nothing. So I then though I would download and install my original 4.1.2 firmware, XEF, but that said it would take a day to download. So now I am wondering what my options are, I will do anything to not have to factory reset this because it is just a huge pain in the bum and I really should learn by now not to play with firmware, cos every time I muck it all up. Oh and also my custom binary count is now at 1, even though I installed official firmware through Odin.
Thanks and sorry for asking another question, I feel like I just ask them and never answer any

if you downgrade the firmware you will probably have to wipe anyway do clear the system.
I think the easiest way to to factory reset in recovery.

Factory reset and your counter should be fine too
I have installed 4.2.1 over XXELLA (4.1.2, which was rooted), and then did a factory reset
Now, even if the phone is rooted, my system status is official and binary counter is 0.
counter was 1 in XXELLA btw and would not go back to 0 even after using Triangle Away.
