Hi all,
I had an idea for a better keyboard for the streak, but I can't find any step-by-step walkthroughs for making android keyboards. If there's one available, let me know and I should be able to tackle this.
If not, I think the streak needs a split keyboard. Imagine the left half of the keyboard on the left third of the screen, the right half on the right third, and a big numpad/d-pad in the middle third. When I'm typing in landscape mode, I know I'd appreciate minimizing my thumbs' reach.
Any takers? Or good keyboard making tutorials?

I thought the same thing when i first got my streak.

Great Idea!
If someone does make one you should add settings so you can control where the DPAD is, so you could make it like the original Dell Keyboard too!
I'm guessing you've not tried swype then?

While we're on the subject of thumb reach, might I suggest a portrait keyboard with more keys on the left/right side, so you don't constantly mis-type those O's and P's as a leftie (for example), when using the streak one-handed?
I was thinking of a real multitouch keyboard.
First, you have the standard qwerty keyboard, with shift, enter en dpad buttons. A tab button would be cool too.
Second, if you tap and hold the keyboard (anywhere) and slide it to the left, on the right side it will reveal the nummeric keys, where you can input your numbers. Releasing the keyboard and it'll slide back in position. Slidng the other way around, gives other keys.
I'm dreaming of such a keyboard a long time now.
Someone?

I love the Streak, but my thumbs don't...
Hi guys- I don't know of any tutorials, but basically you need to create a custom IME (that's the term used by Android SDK). There is an android SDK example for creating an IME I believe. Also, here is the source code for a Latin keyboard IME someone made:
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/inputmethods/LatinIME.git;a=summary
+1 to the initial idea.
Myself and my office mate were just discussing UI's and both of us agreed that a split keyboard option would make the streak far more ergonomically friendly and probably speed up typing.
BTW, for mocked up examples of what we are talking about see:

I would really love to see a keyboard like this!
Dell's 1.6 stock keyboard makes good use of the additional space instead of just making the buttons ridiculously large, but it really should be symmetric.
With smartphones getting larger and tablets on the rise it's high time for new keyboards, so I think not only the Streak would benefit from it!
All thumbs up for the idea!
Here's an idea: find a developer and start up a kickstart for this... Perhaps we could post this to the general android development forum.
Basic Version
Hey all,
Here's a basic version. It's just a slightly modified version of the soft keyboard that comes with the SDK. It's only usable it in landscape mode, unless you have really small fingers.
Any thoughts/ideas/feedback? Basic changes may be within my ability. A lot of the programming is way over my head, so if anyone wants the source to do some fancy stuff, let me know.

Nice work will give it a try
Works fine i would just prefer the buttons to be a bit bigger about double the size infact and would like the numbers on the end and not in the middle and the numbers a different colour but thats me other than that a great start thanks
Awesome! Some color / shading might help to distinguish between the letters and numbers and more easily find keys. May be its something you adjust to but i find myself having to search for letters.
Two other layout thoughts. 1) maybe stretching out the spacebar a bit. since thats a frequently pressed key it'd be nice to have it by the other letters and closer to the thumbs., 2) rearranging the numpad to have the zero at the bottom center as with a typical dialer numpad. This would require splitting the spacebar into two segments.
Just my 2 cents.

Can't get color to work, yet. Good idea on the spacebar(s). Check this version out.

Here's the current state of things (as of the build above). I'm going to look more into changing the color of the number keys, but I don't think it's really as necessary with this layout. Any and all suggestions are welcomed, and I will let you know what I can/can't/will/won't do.
Also, anyone with android programming experience who can tell me things like, "What are the image format requirements for icons like the one on the delete key?" please let me know if you can offer expertise.

I have definitely seen the same issue. I will take a look at the source, but if anyone has the SDK and has a good eye for troubleshooting code, feel free to post hints.
I'm new with the tablet, actually just got it yesterday. I'm looking for a note taking app that I can turn on when I'm browsing Web sites or forums so that when I come across something I want to remember I can jot it down without having a pen and paper. Almost like a floating notepad. Thanks. Also I'm not rooted. Appreciate any help given.
The Samsung memo application, while limited, does exactly that. You can run anywhere by clicking on the arrow in the middle of the status bar, then choosing the memo, and it isn't full screen, it just floats there in the middle of the screen.
Thank you
Hey thank you nightmarebadger. That helps. The funny thing is that I've actually hit that button a few times and have seen the icons down there while browsing around and doing other things just never paid attention to it. Once again thanks for your help.

No problem - good to know that at least some TouchWiz features are actually useful to people .
PS: If you'll ever change to a ROM without TouchWiz (like CM9), the Memo app won't be there any more and you'll have to find a different way - just a "warning"
I'm happy with my S3 but I come from a Galaxy Note. In S3 there's no option to add new words to Predictive text dictionary.
Are you having the same problem? Is there a way to fix it?
Thanks in advanced.

I'm used to typing with old phones keyboard and thanks to you I've realised that if I want to add a new word I have to use the qwerty keyboard.
Do you know how to delete words added to the dictionary. I could do it in Galaxy Note.
Sorry for all the incoveniences

Hi all! Congrats to those who got their shiny new S3s.
I would like to check if anyone is experiencing the same bug as me within predictive text:
Save a new word to the auto-substitution and/or my word list and then restart your phone.
Do your custom words disappear? Mine are not preserved after the restart.
Do test it and let me know!

Please test this with your S3s people! I'll be putting in an official complaint to samsung tomorrow! Need more to confirm the presence of the bug

Just updated my gf's S2 to ICS 4.0.3 & when using the 3x4 keyboard, in the predictive txt area there is the option to add your own word, why would this be removed for the S3? Makes no sense??
Yeah same problem with mine, I spent and age adding words the first day then next day they all gone and wasn't auto learning new ones, but yesterday it started learning again and for me this is the most serious bug I ever saw on a phone.
---------- Post added at 03:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:49 PM ----------
Is there any system file to Backup/Modify/Restore because I can't afford to keep losing all my words.
Has this problem been solved in the new update?

need to change to qwerty to add words to my words list...
a restart will reset the my words list..
in smiley list under the qwerty kb there is no BIG SMILE

is there a way to add the words to my words list frm the pc...its sucks to add 100's of words manualy
I was never a big fan of stock keyboard...
I find it a bit gimmicky especially the predictive text
I suggest you try a third party keyboard instead... SwiftKey a much better in option in my opinion.
I've been trying to find out myself if there's any other way to add words by finding the file in the Root folder that saves my words list so I can save and replace it every time I reboot, but no one seems to know how.
Hi I have the same problem as soon as I restart my phone or switch it off all the words in the list will be deleted, my old firmware was I9300XXALE9, & after visiting the Samsung workshop to fix this issue they've installed this firmware I9300XXALEF but the same problem remain the same, please advice how to solve this issue.
BRs,
Ahmad T.
I've been digging through the Root files to try to find where it saves "My word list" and all I've found is the file:
Root/data/user/0->/data/data/com.android.providers.userdictionary.
But even with words in my word list that folder is empty, so come on there must be someone out there clever enough to find the folder the words are saved in.
Hi,
since when I updated to ICS my Xperia keeps learning every word I write and that's very annoying because it learns words with spelling mistakes etc. In GB I found an option that made the keyboard not learn the "new" words I wrote but I can't find this option on ICS. What can I do?

Setting it's there I had this problem too, but it's there! I don't have English ICS but I'll try to translate it by my way.....
Settings / Language and Input / Keyboard Xperia (click icon on right side) / Text Input Settings / Words prediction / here apply the last button like "I don't want any help during typing"
I use Slovak language so that's why my titles could be little bit different...
Thank you but that's not what I meant... I want to be helped a little (in italian there are some "special" letters the phone replaces automatically) but I don't want the phone to learn new words... However, thank you
well.. if you see that you typed your word wrong, then just use the enter key, NEVER tap words you dont want in your dictionary.
I would also like to have this feature back on my Xperia P.

Fellow modders, could you please suggest some good Keyboards?
The problem is that there probably won't be a good swype-like keyboard available for Serbian language for a long time (there are simply too many word-forms and irregular forms per word). I've been trying to get used to Swype (the latest version) for 2 weeks now, but it's simply not possible, their Serbian dictionary is not really big and I have to type in manually at least one new word per a message which then completely destroys any speed effect that swyping has I've added ~150 my words so far, but I still have to write in new ones all the time... And wnex ord prediction is non existent, Swype sucks at predicting words. The good thing about Swype is that it keeps the standard 26 letter keyboard (all Ć, Č and C are under C; Š and S are under S etc).
I've also tried the latest SwiftKey X. The problem with it is that it shows all 30 letters of Serbian Latin script and that makes the key too small... The dictionary and word prediction seems a lot better than it is on Swype, but the keys are just so small I couldn't find an option to switch to a 26 letter keyboard while using the Serbian dictionary
So, after weeks of experimenting, I would like to return to the usual way of typing - letter by letter. What keyboard would you recommend for this?
The best keyboard for letter by letter typing on Gingerbread was that HTC one, it was A LOT better than the 2.3 AOSP keyboard! But it doesn't work on anything higher than Android 2.3
Coming to ICS and JellyBean, the AOSP keyboard has been greatly improved, but I find the keys a bit too small for our screens and when I type fast, mistakes happen all the time
I will try to use SwiftKeyX as a regular keyboard, without Serbian and "Flow" enabled, but would you recommend any more? Are there any good brand-made keyboards for Android 4.x? Sony/Xperia, Samsung/TouchWiz, HTC/Sense?
*sorry for the terribly long post*
I remember seeing a HTC Sense keyboard somewhere for ICS+. I'll post the link if I find it.

I've switched from Swype to Swiftkey and have been using it for the past week or so and deleted it last night. The more I used it, the worse the predictions and the corrections became... The Xperia keyboard is nice, but the keys are utterly to small for me, I couldn't achieve any speed or precision
I will try TouchPal and Kii keyboards in the following days, maybe one of these two will work out for me
If not, I've also signed up for the Minuum keyboard beta and I'm waiting for them to contact me.... (you can sign up here - http://minuum.com/ )
I also was searching for good keyboard for our "small" screens.
Also i needed Serbian letters and Ћирилица. I tested a lot of them and last 1 year i am using Smart Keyboard Pro.
You can edit everything you want. There is also calibration so can be calibrated it to your usage.

Thanks, mate, will check it out for sure
I have tested Kii Keyboard and Touchpal since my last post. Kii Keyboard is not on par with the bigger names (like Swype, Touchpal and Swiftkey), it just doesn't feel that mature. I didn't find it enjoyable.
Touchpal was very good for my needs, but I couldn't turn off its "toolbar" (that's how they call its word suggestion line, because it has shortcuts to some tools) which was very irritating

There's a lot keyboards at marketplace for sure but i never found any keyboard that i can change everything i want, there is always that something need to stay or i am missing something from reall keyboard. When you are typing, some suffs are just anoying and that was:
- Turn off complitlly text predirection, only Auto-capitalizion to stay,
- add enter button,
- remove speaker button,
- remove smiley button,
- remove or change popup button (usually that can makes small deley when you type fast, so without it you can type how much fast you want)
- having " , " and " . " at same time
- control extra space
- having normal, not some colored styles
- support for needed language and when i use it, i don't need to use that layout. So when i am using Serbian language, i dont need to have changed letters Z ana Y. English layout can be used.
- Calibration is incredible, its impossible to wrote wrong word with it. I dont understand how perfect can be but it is. I just will never learn to use touch screen for type message
- after all after you restore backup from memory card, calibration and all settings are same as you saved them.
There is so much more stuffs that i didn't found on other keyboard but i just need them. That was the only reason why i hated this phone when i buyed it At first look i tought that its impossible to write normal messages without 30% of bad typed words but after this one, i found it possible. Maybe there is many peoples who will find that less important but when you wrote some important mail or something, i don't wanna spend 10 minutes more to find all strings or keys i always need.
Phone is just incredible and i want to make it most possible incredible that i can

I know, and Swiftkey and Touchpal have those features as well, but I don't want to use text prediction and auto-correction... I've tried living with those features for almost a month and it didn't work out, the Serbian dictionaries available for keyboards are not very good and the amount of word forms covered is very low...
Thanks for the suggestion, though

Which I did But then SwiftKey didn't make much noise, because the keys are more cramped up than they are on the AOSP keyboard and, furthermore, the symbols were strangely positioned and smileys weren't as accessible as on the AOSP one, so...
But it doesn't matter, because Smart Keyboard Pro is just what I needed A tad bigger keys than on the AOSP keyboard and that's it. Everything is in the same place, but I have a higher speed combined with a better accuracy
