Step-by-step guide for unbricking a Photon from an ota update brick and recovering from a "failed to boot 2" or "failed to boot 3" error when booting.
Also, big note, this is NOT for 2.3.4 users!
EXTREME thanks to peetr_ for ALL of this info and getting myself and probably countless others fixed. All the links are files he uploaded personally and all these instructions come directly from him. Be sure to thank the crap out of him if you get your device fixed through this method.
1) Make sure you have all the motorola drivers (I assume you do otherwise you wouldn't have been able to brick your device).
2) Make sure you have a FULL ass charge. Not 90%, but FULL! I know it doesn't charge when it's in the failed to boot mode. I bought an external battery wall charger from Overstock for under $10 shipped, I suggest you do the same.
3) Enter Fastboot mode by holding the volume up key while powering on your device.
4) Connect your phone via USB to your computer.
5) Open command line on your computer (Windows key + "R", then type in "cmd") or (Windows 7: Open the start menu and type "cmd").
6) Download and extract this file: (uploaded by peetr_) http://d-h.st/xl8 (if no hyperlink, copy and paste the previous text in your browser). There should be a "boot.img" file and a "recovery.img" file.
7) It is VERY helpful to have all your files in one directory, all your fastboot files, ADB and all that jazz should be in the same directory as well as all the files you've downloaded to flash.
8) In command line type in "moto-fastboot flash boot boot.img" (assuming you followed step 7). It will say "sending" and then "writing" and should only take a few seconds. Your device will say some things too. After this, restart your device and your phone should boot in for the first time since you bricked it. (That was the greatest thing to watch after being bricked for 3 weeks!)
9) You're not quite out of the woods yet, 4G and WiFi will not work yet. Hold the power button up while powering on once again to enter fastboot mode.
10) Once again in command line (assuming your phone is still hooked up) type in "moto-fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and it will send and write.
11) If your phone wasn't previously rooted or if somehow you lost root go ahead and root it now (just google the oneclick method).
12) Download these modules http://d-h.st/aAi and store them on your device, SD card or internal memory.
13) Download the RootExplorer app and navigate to the zip on your device, set it to Read/Write on the top of the app and hold the zip down until you get a menu, hit permissions and set them.
14) Hold volume up while powering device on and you should get into Bootstrap recovery.
15) Hit "install zip from SD card" and navigate to the file and install it.
16) Boot the device normally and congratulations! You now have working WiFi and 4G on an electrify flashed Photon! OTA updates will NOT work and you will NOT be able to unlock the bootloader via pudding for Custom ROM installs. If you hate blur like I do, download "GO Launcher" or my personal favorite "SPB Shell".
I appreciate your effort. Just highlighting some inaccuracies.
This is only for failed to boot (2 or 3) after ota 2.3.5 update. Not after flashing Electrify sbf. You never flashed that.
And you cannot flash modules with android recovery option in bootloader menu, you had to install bootstrap recovery or copy with root explorer and set permissions one by one.
And give there a big warning, that this is not for 2.3.4 users.
Other than this, it's good.
Edited! Hopefully it's good enough to help some people now.

I've searched everywhere and I can't find conclusive information on how to "fastboot a recovery image"
I'm sure i could do it if there was a how to, but I can't seem to find any?
please help!
P.s I know how to get into fastboot on my streak but I dont know what all the numbers mean on the screen or where I go from there to install the recovery from the sd card.
i was!!
hehe...we all were at first....worried bout bricking our lovely toys and trying to filter all the posts n posts n post..
have you seen this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455
seems to be a fully automated process
So if I am correct, this will let me flash a recovery so that I can install Streakdroid yes?
to install a streakdroid rom you will have to ignore my previous comment as the are for stock recovery. you will need to flash over clockwork or, the more streak compatible streakmod.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840326
^^^ the post on flashing streakmod to enable flashing zip packages
2. To stop the stock recovery overwritting the recovery you should do:
Rename --- "etc/install-recovery.sh" . (just add ".bak" to stop the system using install-recovery.sh"
Im still slightly retarded but hope this clarifies things
oh....btw... i struggled with the fastboot command.. but found out the full proper command is "fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img
"
i.e. 0.x413c must be added so the fastboot command knows what device its talking to..
(Hope this has been useful....had so much fun learning in these forums at XDA would be nice if i could help people in return - IM A RETARD TOO!)
Ok, The thing is, I read through all of that but something is missing.
At what stage do I type things? whats the process for that?
and where exactly do I rename this file?
I know the steps before and after - I'm missing the bit in between here.
k...let me see if i can clarify..
reread the instructions....to make is easier and automated for u, i would suggest the following..(although i did it the manual way this should be painless!!)
1. ensure you have the latest dell drivers installed and that in the device manger you have your Android Composite ADB device up n running.
2. from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455 download the MultiRecoveryFlasher v.0.3 and the bat file too.
extract to say C:\
(copy the extracted bat file into the same directory.
3. with power off, turn on streak hold the camera button and then the power button together until you get to the white screen, then select fastboot...
4. now double click that bat file in your directory and option 7, and wait 10 secs
5. now connect your streak usb cable to the pc
it should install the latest streakmod automatically for you....
6. when successful run, using the bat file select option 9 to reboot the phone (takes a few seconds for it to happen)
7. exit the bat file.....finished with pc
8. when streak has booted to normal...using root explorer navigate to the folder "system/etc/" and locate file "install-recovery.sh" long press on that file and rename.....rename to install-recovery.sh.bak (by just adding .bak)
9. power off phone and once again boot into fastboot as per 3. to ensure you still have streakmod.....if all is well you can then go ahead and flash your zip from sd card roms.
10. if you get the stock recovery option already overwritten the streakmod just repeat steps above 3-7..
as i said i did it the manual way...but im sure that following these steps using the uksheep's programme you will find it painless........
let me know if it worked or if im still a superdelux, mark1, grade A duffer (was hoping to be grade B by now lololo)
edit...you are rooted??? download root explorer pro...its on the net....tap the R/W button to enable renaming of system files first...be careful!!...also you boot into recovery by holding both volume buttons AND th epower button until you get the four options menu. You have to select option 2 whic will take you to the streakmod (you will see dell symbols..press power button again when you do to access streakmod functions..
megacamz....have you read the pdf here....

So I was following a tutorial for installing CWM recovery on my atrix and it had me:
"Using Root Explorer or some other type of file explorer, navigate to /system/etc and delete the file called install_recovery.sh. This will prevent your phone from automatically reinstalling the stock Android Recovery".
I did this without making a backup of the file (foolish) and now my phone cannot boot into recovery at all. When I select Boot into Recovery, I get the error - failed to boot 2. This is a major problem because I cannot even factory restore my atrix, Even a hardware reset failed.
Basically if anyone has any ideas on a solution, they would be greatly appreciated. Or perhaps someone could post their install_recovery.sh file so I can replace it.
Thank you!

1. Unlock your bootloader (get into RSD mode and flash pudding .sbf)
2. Flash CWM again
3. Try to get back into recovery
Ah! I thought gingerbread unlocked my bootloader. that's definitely my problem. Thanks for the tip. will try now.
If your phone is already unlocked, follow this steps.
In order for you to follow these steps, you have to have your fastboot program already downloaded.
1. Press the power button while press and hold the Vol Down button.
2. When you get fastboot on your screen, press the Vol Up button.
3. You will see ''Starting Fastboot Protocol support" on your screen.
4. Connect you USB cable
5. Issue "fastboot.exe devices" and you will see some device information. This means your device is properly recognized.
6. Issue "fastboot flash recovery [your recovery image file name]"
7, Issue "fastboot reboot" if step #6 is OK and your device will reboot, but quickly press and hold Vol Down button again.
8. You will see Fastboot again on your screen, then use Vol Down key till you see "Andrid Recovery" and then press "Vol Up"
9. If everything's fine, this will get you to the recovery.
Thanks
I finally unlocked my bootloader and now I have an ics cm9 rom on it! So much better.

ok this is what i did just 4 hours ago and my phone its back to stock again..gladly =)
1. charged the phone to 100% (very important)
2. downloaded the lastest driver for atrix 4g --5.5 motohelper it says
motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Support-Homepage/Software_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
3. download the files for 2.3.4 ginger bread 4.5.91 here thanks to 1KDS ---> goo.gl/GEizI extract it anywhere just make sure you know where its..
goo.gl/YMS0j for people with the same version as me.. 4.5.141 GB 2.3.6 WORKED FOR ME
4. get RSDlite 5.7 from here ----> forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=920654&d=1330265840 thanks to alsitn for posting the link
4. get fastboot files... mediafire.com/?j1qs6a75z3fv681 -uploaded by me-
create a folder at C:\ called Fastboot and extract the files in there (just in case you dont have fastboot files anymore)
5. do a full wipe with the following steps
a. enter recovery mode of clockworkmod
b. Wipe Dalvik (advanced option in main menu)
wipe cache
factory reset/data
c. turn off the phone and then enter fastbootmode turning ON the phone and holding VOL down and then pressing VOL up it should say starting fastboot protocols..then connect the phone to PC
d. on CMD (command prompt) navigate to the folder created on step 3** using CD.. to go back and CD "folder name" to go foward, when you get inside the folder where the files are..then write the following commands
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase webtop
fastboot erase preinstall
Disconnect phone from PC
6. then turn off the phone by removing the battery..then remove SIM and SD card
turn ON the phone holding VOL up it should say Starting RSD protocols.. run the RSDlite...connect your phone...make sure RSD detects your phone it should Say on model: NS flash olympus and just in the right column it should say connected.. after that... press the "...." button next to the textbox called Filename and select the SBF file you downloaded and extracted.. it should be 1.46 gb both files size are the same..so make sure your selecting the one you need (version you had before installing cyanogenmod)
7. after you select your file...press start it gonna takes around 25 or 30mins.. never disconnect your phone during the process it will reach 100% like 2 or 3 times and reboot phone 2 or 3 times too..... feel free to disconnect ONLY when the RSDlite says PASSED or PASS something like that..in the result column
8. after that you should be back to stock without ROOT without bootloaded unlocked ready for rooting and BL unlocking wich i like more..only to have that on my stock rom..

up!
Hello everyone, been a lurker for some time, but have never needed to post before until today. I'm accustomed to rooting and installing custom roms but I've never had anywhere close to as much difficulty as Im having with this tf201. Heres the situation:
Not sure if you'd call this bricked, as I have total access to fastboot, adb, and CWM Recovery (version 5.8.3.4 touch btw). However my most recent attempt ended with totally wiping from the volume down+power menu (whatever its called). I can not turn the tablet off, as it automatically boots to the asus splash screen (and goes no further, naturally). It is unlocked, and my drivers do work (both fastboot and adb recognize the device), but I can not flash or push anything to the sdcard (with adb its a protocol failure, with fastboot I get "sending zip....OKAY writing zip....FAILED [remote : [FileOperationFailed]]) Don't know if it needs to be said, but I also can't simply drop the file on the sd card as if it were a media storage device as "my computer" does not recognize that it is connected (Oh I am using the naked universal drivers from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650 )
So yeah, Im at a loss as it seems like no one has had this particular problem before (also my connector cable works fine, so its not that). Any help would, of course, be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: On the tablet after trying to flash with fastboot it returns "Failed to process command flash:zip error (0x30003)"
Really? Not a single person has any idea? Could really use some help here...

You do not flash zips with fastboot.
First of all tell me where your "NVIDIA" logo is when you first power on, bottom center or bottom right?
The nvidia logo is in the bottom center of the "EEE PC Splash"
This is going to sound stupid, but did you verify the MD5 before you tried to flash it?

You are still on the ICS bootloader if NVIDIA is bottom center.
Go here http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/93 and follow the instructions for "Download - Recovery Image / Fastboot Method (using ICS or JB Asus bootloader)"
You will need to get the ICS blob file. Never flash the wrong recovery for what bootloader you are on or you can brick your device.
If you get it working and you want to upgrade to Jellybean bootloader there is instructions in post 2 of the Hairybean Rom thread. "Upgrade instructions for ICS"
edit.. to make it a bit easier for you.
Get this file http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf201/openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-tf201-ICS.blob
Rename it to twrp.blob
Place the twrp.blob in the same folder as your fastboot exe
Go into fastboot and type
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery twrp.blob
Wait for it to finish and then type
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
see if that works.
Damn, I had a feeling it was the bootloader issue that I messed up. I went searching all over for how to find out which one I had once I realized my potential mistake. Gonna give these steps a try
I just tried all your steps, twrp is on there and I was able to push both cm10 and gapps onto the tablet, but now the zips I pushed to the sd card arent showing up in TWRP...

If you now have twrp on there you dont need to push a file. Place the file on an external SD card on the root and plug it in before starting prime.
When going into TWRP go into install and select external SD. Pick your rom and then flash it.
Thanks a lot flumpster, everything's good now and Ive got cyanogen up and running smoothly. You've brought my tablet back to life and Ive learned a valuable lesson
Hi all, i have a problem that i can't solve, is the oem unlocking on my blu life one x2. I downloaded adb and fastboot (windows user), phone and adb drivers, and when i put the phone on bootloader mode, i run the "fastboot oem unlock" command, and the command prompt say: "need user wipe data, do fastboot oem unlock-go", so i put these command, and the oem is not unlocked yet, so I repeat those steps and the command prompt keeps showing me the same message (need user wipe data, do fastboot oem unlock-go). At this point, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I made the factory format many times, and I cannot unlock the OEM.
Can help me pls? I want to root my device, but because of this problem, I can not go to other steps :crying: :crying:
Thanks

Hi there, I have THE VERY SAME PROBLEM. Done the same, with same lame results... BOOTLOADER STILL UNLOCKED!!
It is really frustrating... been through many posts and guides but can't finish them... fastboot OEM unlock with the user data eraser switch didn't work out well in any case.
IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH A COMPLETE WORKING GUIDE WILLING TO SHARE IT?
Thanks in advance.
J.
I have the same problem also, I have posted on another thread but no responses. here is my error:
"FAILED (remote: Need wipe userdata. Do 'fastboot oem unlock-go')
finished. total time: 0.003s"
Has anyone figured out how to onlock the NEW BOOTLOADER?
I have a new life one x2 that BLU sent me.

I actually still use this device and should be able to get you through this.
I'm not sure where are you on the device i.e. partly unlocked ect.
I'll start you from the top and I'll let you pickup wherever you like.
First, let's get our links ready (because I had these ready to go for myself).
I just checked it now, the device specific links still work.
ADB: https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
TWRP: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6_iuhJQH7aGM0JkOXJkUHdlRHM
MAGISK: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/topjohnwu/magisk-manager/

DOWNLOAD: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6_iuhJQH7aGR05CSnlhWm1HWWc
1) Download The driver, download program, and stock ROM.
2) Install the first two files.
3) Go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm\QPST\bin
4) When your device is off; Hold down the vol up AND down while turning on the device and wait until the text disappears
5) Plug in the phone to the PC and a red light should start blinking
5) Unzip the stock rom (when done, it can take a while).
6) Open QFIL.exe
7) You should see "(COM8)" on the top for the connection
8) Click on the first Browse button and select the mbn file from the extracted stock ROM folder
9) Click on LOAD XML and click rawprogram_unsparse_upgrade and then patch0
10) Click download until the phone reboots into test mode; click reboot to start the 'new' phone
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Do the generic phone stuff to unlock the bootloader by enabling dev options and then enable BOTH OEM unlocking AND USB debugging
2) Download and install magisk from the link above and then download the zip file it gives you to flash
3) Download the TWRP image and ADB files listed above and do whatever you need/want to do (boot, flash, or both)
4) Flash the magisk zip file and your done
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Delete the folders fota, fota-updater, and fire from the system partition in TWRP as these are the spyware/adware that BLU added
If you want to disable and other apps that BLU added, you can just rename the file from *.apk to *.ap
I'll try to be around if you have any questions
Thank you for this. I just left on vacation and will not be able to try this till next week, hope you are around then as I am sure I will have questions.

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you but I have been traveling out of the county and have not had time to try this.
I have been successful in rooting 2 Life One X2 phones with this prosses. One was new out of the box and the second one was an older one about 2 years old.
Thank you for all your help when no one ele knew the answer.
My next project is to root an Oukitel OK6000, there does not seem to be much information on this phone. If you hear of anything please let me know.

3) Download the TWRP image and ADB files listed above and do whatever you need/want to do (boot, flash, or both)
4) Flash the magisk zip file and your done

Delete the folders fota, fota-updater, and fire from the system partition in TWRP as these are the spyware/adware that BLU added
If you want to disable and other apps that BLU added, you can just rename the file from *.apk to *.ap
I'll try to be around if you have any questions

Hello dougo007,
Some of the links are dead and I am stuck and cannot figure out how to get passed the failed error on OEM unlock. It just keeps saying try unlock go.
Could you please provide new links or point me to someplace that I can use to oem unlock my BLU Life ONE X2. I searched and can't seem to find anything.
Having the same issue as you were and the links don't work

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you but I have been traveling out of the county and have not had time to try this.
I have been successful in rooting 2 Life One X2 phones with this prosses. One was new out of the box and the second one was an older one about 2 years old.
Thank you for all your help when no one ele knew the answer.
My next project is to root an Oukitel OK6000, there does not seem to be much information on this phone. If you hear of anything please let me know.
