Install CWM without CF-root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have spent two nights reading many methods of rooting and flashing already, but I yet to come across a way to install CWM Recovery for my GT-I9100M without using a CF-root kernel.
The thing is, I want to keep the official 4.0.3 firmware I got from Kies.
I already figured out how to root without using a CF-root kernel. He does not have a CF kernel for my version anyways.
Back to my question. Is there a way?
I tried flashing the ZIP from ROM manager's website, but the recovery is only temporary. The next boot, it goes back to stock recovery.
In my Xperia X10, I could install CWM Recovery using a program after rooting. Not sure if I can do it for SG2.

You can flash kernels and you will not lose your official firmware.

All you would have to do is root your device and make a nandroid backup before you flash anything. Then you would have a copy of your firmware. Worst case, if you lose the backup, all you need to do is go to www.sammobile.com and download the firmware and flash through odin.

I see. Custom kernel is the only way to get recovery.
One other question though, is it okay to flash a ROM using a temporary CWM recovery (ie. recovery flashed indepedent of kernel)?

[Q] Now that I have verizon 2.2 tell me how to fix CWM recovery

yesterday iwasaperson was extremely helpful to me. Thanks. I took my fascinate back to stock 2.1 and allowed it to update to 2.2. I then rooted my phone by flashing CWM recovery using ODIN. (red version) I had installed two files to root of drive one update.zip and the other for rooting the phone Su-----.zip. I ran them using the red version and restarted the phone. The phone is now rooted but I can't get back to CWM recovery.
I tried the following: I have ROM manager and flashed CWM but it wom't take. If I try to go into recovery I get the stock Samsung blue menu. I am thinking I need a different (CWM recovery comptabile) kernel or mod to get this to work.
Can someone help?
You need to flash a kernel other than stock, rebooting with the stock kernel will revert back to blue recovery

why dont you just flash CWM in odin again?

This (though in reverse order).
You need to reflash CWM by odin, go into Odin immediately upon the first boot (not using Rom Manager!), and flash a new kernel from the SDcard. The stock kernel will trash CWM if it gets a chance to boot.
saf66. any ones in mind and where I can obtain them. And as if I weren't asking enough questions. (Sorry I know I am) Methods to flash them?
Or any others of you please
Go into development at the top of page open stickies and nitsu has a list of kernels,a well as roms

Download the kernel you want , then odin cwr, boot into recovery, flash kernel and then reboot phone

Simple mate. Download this http://db.tt/MxD7F6xg and install through stock recovery (volume up+home+power).
This is a temp CWM recovery so you can flash this kernel: http://www.dorimanx.com/Android-ICS/ by selecting Install zip from internal or external sdcard. BTW, it's touch recovery.
Then you're all done:thumbup:
Yes you can flash custom roms through CWM recovery built in the kernel.
Yes also to revert back to stock rom/kernel for ota. For this, you can use mobile Odin pro. Works great.
EDIT: OH and the kernels are pre-rooted

You should not be mucking about with your phone until you have a pc handy(with odin installed properly).
I hardly ever use a pc,but you can get situations when you flash something and the phone dont boot properly, plus no access to recovery.
The only option is then using a pc/odin.

[Q] Can't re-root after flashing stock ROM [XXEMC2]

Hello all,
About a week ago I ran into a problem with my phone which I thought was a software, which actually turned out to be a hardware issue with my sim card. Cutting a long story short, I flashed the official stock rom with Odin V1.85, and it passed and everything was back to default factory settings.
Having now got my issue fixed, I wanted to re-root my phone, in order to go back to the old ROM I was using [UltimaROM v12]. However after flashing various versions of CWM I cannot get my phone to root. I'm no stranger using Odin, I can usually install a new version of CWM in 30 seconds, but my phone is persistent on not rooting. I can't work out if maybe I've done something wrong, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I've tried running as Admin on W7, but it doesn't make a difference, I'd appreciate if one of you guys could help, as I used the search bar before, but it seems no-one has had this problem before.
Modem: XXEMC2
Kernel: Stock
ROM: Stock
Use TWRP or Philz recovery .

I've tried those too, they don't work either.

The problem is the recoveries will look as if they've installed fine through Odin getting a "passed" flag, but when I go to recovery it's still the default Android recovery. Therefore no root.
What root method are you using?
Chainfire one I believe. You basically install CWM recovery, then install SuperSU from .zip in CWM.
So you have rooted but can't install recovery?
Just flash one with mobile Odin,
Nope, no root yet, because I can't flash SuperSU.zip 'cause I'm still on the default recovery.
Just use the old cf root then update the recovery or use framaroot and flash recovery with mobile Odin
cf-root roots the phone as well as changes the stock recovery to cwm recovery! is this the exact one you flashed? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238

[Q] Stock recovery in CWM flashable form - anyone have a link to SDS safe version?

Decided to switch from custom recovery method to using mobile Odin for flashing, so the bootloader flash counter can be reset - kernel is also stock.
I can find threads for modems, bootloaders and kernels but the only links to stock recovery I could find was sticky threads and over a year old, so not SDS safe.
Does anyone have a recent .zip CWM flashable version please? I'm keeping the custom ROM I've already got, so don't really want to flash fully stock just to get the recovery.
Thanks.
Also, reading through those stickies some of the advice and files they link to are well out of date - noobs could end up flashing ICS if they follow some of them.
There's a safe stock recovery in the cf auto root tar. Maybe that'll flash via mobile odin?
Or take an existing recovery cwm.zip (example philz recovery) and put the recovery image from cf auto root or any official rom in it instead

Thanks, didn't think of that - it flashed in mobile odin and installed recovery perfectly, but removed root. Had to flash again on the pc to regain root, triangled away and updated the bootloader and I'm now at peace with my warranty information.
System is still modified, as it's rooted but I can live with that.

Yeah I have modified status only. Since I have an ICS bootloader (I don't use download mode) I don't have flash counter increased.

[Q] S2 - Siyah-s2-v6.0b5 Complete write failed

I have used several custom roms, until recently when I had some issue with my phone overheating I decided to flash back stock rom. Now the heating issue has solved, but somehow I can't go back to root. At first whenever I used to root I used a CWM zip which I used to flash from stock recovery. Since now I'm comfortable with odin,I want to root via odin and still retain my stock ROM.
I odined stock rom on my phone so that means odin works fine, but when I flash Siyah kernel it says failed. What could be the problem?
