Hi,
I'm thinking about try a custom kernel on my phone but didn't find any comparison between the available options, so I tought it would be good to compile a list of pros and cons to help me and others to choose the best one based on our necessities.
So people with custom kernels, why are you using the kernel you are using??
There dont have the best kernel, only have better and better kernel.

xperia sspeed
hi i use xperia sspeed kernel. its very smooth ! dll currently not working for .elf file, but u can install a .zip over recovery
if you are game for experimenting.. go for speed kernel.. else go for advanced kernel.. xsx seemed a bit laggy to me.. i have tried all 3...
advanced kernel is stable.. no problem kernel... speed kernel v1 sent my phone into reboot loop.. went back to advanced... then v2 speed worked for me.. then advanced kernel 11 came along.. switched to that one as even though v2 was stable.. but battery life was not so good for me.. yet to try the v3.. probably today or tomorrow will try that..

is there any kernel which helps with battery life. I don't necessarily want a custom rom. any kernel which helps with battery life I would be interested. my rooted stock v.10c is running out of juice rather quickly and I am not yet using heavily. I am not too much into gaming or multimedia. 3g has to be on; as in my area 2g signal is worse than 3g.... go figure.
thanks
ash
i recommend u flash der_caveman's kernel and install and setup juice defender from market..I have done the same..Plus a tweaks like low brightness and powersave governor when screen is off(SetCPU) help
Hi all can i try flashing this kernel on my stock rom...This one seems nice..
[ROM] devoid.franco (franco.Kernel.v6: BFQ,BFS,smartass,lagfix,3D drivers +)
Got myself a live walkman. what's the best rom and kernel for this phone?
Thanks,
John

I personally use hybrom v15 with x kernel. Currently the most stable ROM according to me.
MIUI has nice interface, but has still quite a lot of bugs and not everything works. Also CyanogenMod.

I saw before that you were using Rage Kernel, is X Kernel better?
I am currently using Rage Kernel.
Is X Kernel much more battery efficient and better performance compared to Rage Kernel?
I have used rage kernel, x kernel, krsh kernel and bbooff kernel on my live with walkman. x kernel is the best, seems to me.
I also want ot know the best rom for live.
sorry for my english.
I,ve using Hybrom V15 with Rage kernel.
Sometime it abit laggy when your phone on a high temperature. (I've OC to 1.2 Ghz :\)
I think I should try x kernel when I'm less lazy.
PS. If you want a stable ROM. I prefer stock over Hybrom.
I already used hybrom, xrom and miuiv4 and the best from depends on your needs and likes if you want a stock from feeling go for hybrom very stable , xrom is pretty but has some bugs and miui is still beta but with a really nice interface rc0 kernel is giving me and average battery life. Never really tried cm7 or cm9 cause there is no stereo speakers and about kernels for me the rage kernel was the best.
Take into account that everyone has different experiences with roms and so, so the more stable is always stock, if no rom convince you just stick with with stock and try a custom kernel with it.
thank u guys. im sticking with stock until a stable rom comes along.
I use hybrom + x kernel
I am currently using Hybroman V15, used boof kernel then changed it to rage kernel.
Saw here in xda that x kernel seems to be the best.
Installed x kernel and tried to flash the zram but caused bootloops, never gets past bootanimation.
Had to reflash X kernel then install Hybroman again, so far so good...
Hybrom is currently stable ROM.
I haven't noticed big difference between X kernel and Rage kernel at the moment.
Haven't tested battery life difference.

Hybrom is great but when i tried MIUI beta, is the best for music lover..
Hybrom stable, fast, useable..
MIUI true clear bass, stable when i used normally, fast with antutu cpu master..

This Thread Rocks, Thanks to TS, Your Comments are really helpful to those who want to try custom roms and kernel,
Im planning to have mine Hybroman 16 + X Kernel Combo...
X Kernel Is the Best among the Feedbacks so Far... Please add more feedbacks.. thanks...

Here you go... X Kernel
In my opinion, Stock kernel and Stock ROM obviously you must root to get some extra features

Staying on stock rom and kernel is fine but if you want to extract a few more juice out of your phone and set things up a few notch higher; installing customized item is the answer. Improved battery life, bravia display, OC feature, new UI, etc. In the end all falls on the user preference as they say.
I too recommend that stock ROM is the best and almost bug free.
XKernal - Hybrom

I think if u wanna try something more try X Kernal n Hybrom.. I have tried many ROM even the ICS ones this combination gives me hell of a good battery life... n I am not saying that this ROM is 100% stable sometimes gives away but okey
Guys what combination of rom and kernel do u most prefer for mni pro coz i been having a trial and error about this roms and kernel...tnx for the answers and explanation on why...
I am having the same issues. I find X Kernel gives the best battery life for Ginger Bread ROMs. I have yet to find a ROM that I am satisfied with. Currently I am running a rooted .62 and finding that to be the best balance. I have removed a bunch of apps based on the tutorial in this forum.
So far I've used the stock 4.0.4 ICS ROM with different kernels.
My most favorite kernels that were working are:
EXtended Stock Kernel - v2 4.1.B.0.431 (had a great battery usage... the most I got on-battery with this one was 22 hours with some light usage)
Rage Kernel v3.2 (i loved this one because of the swap and the ability to OC your CPU, but the battery performance was somewhat lower than the EXtended Stock Kernel - v2...)
You can always try the KRsH Kernel v3.0 but I didn't really like that one.
And currently I'm using the CM 9 RC1 ROM (check their official site) with FXP126 kernel and still testing the performance and stuff. So far I like this one more than all previous.
I hope this helps you out a little bit.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. And don't forget to hit the thanks button if this helped you a tiny bit
can you give me a link for tutorial for apps removing?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089470
This link has apps that can be safely removed from the Xperia Arc. I removed the same apps from the Mini Pro without issue. The apps can be removed using Titanium backup on a rooted device.

ICS ROMs are in my opinion still work in progress, buggy if you will.
KRsH kernel v3 is very good at battery consumption
For stability, speed etc I prefer GB ROMs though.
Like CM7.2RC3 + Rage kernel, or Spartan ROM if you like stock. Also on Rage.
In the end it depends what you like. There is no absolute best ROM or kernel.
everyone likes different things.

Thank You very much
how about the combination for gaming guys??? do u have any idea?
and if i am using ics wht should a choose?
ICS sucks.. Bravia doesn't work on my minipro if i dont use xperia gallery app
+1 .. IMHO i prefer to use GB than ICS for a better gaming performance..my current ROM is real ICS lite 29th june, and my kernel is Rage Kernel v3.2 (which i suggest you it's worth to try)..and when im playing some HD game it's still LAGGY (which is not laggy in my previous GB ROM) like Vlachmed said.. i choose this kernel because of its swap capability..i really wanna go back to GB but cant find my old ROM's thread.. (Hybrom V17) apparently the dev has left XdA (too bad)
sorry for my bad english and grammar..
Best Rom and Kernel
Personally I use Real ICS and the kernel is Rage Kernel v3.2 ICS and my phone runs very fast and smooth
Gingerbread
For Gingerbread you can try NeroDroid , and Rage Kernel 3.0
So which one do you preffer and why :
Real ICS beta Rom vs Ice Hybrom (v3)
and Rage kernel vs KrSh kernel - especially in terms of battery life ...
Regards
Experience varies with people. You should try it on your own.

have tried almost all - but was curious on the opinion of the others
Thanks
Real ICS and Rage Kernel
I would prefer real ics because it has some battery saving tweaks and it works and rage kernel because it saves more battery than krsh kernel
i havent try RealICS but i stick NeroICS & Iceybrom cos dey re lite, smooth & good.... Bugfree or less bug!!! for kernel, i go Krsh Kernel v2 lite cos its saves more battery & tha best kernel but MESA Kernel too is okay!!! currently using Mesa Kernel...
After several roms n kernel ice hybrom goes well wid krsh kernel dey r smooth almost no battery drain games r good overclocking is good ice hybrom is the best we have!! Boof should come back to scene

i use Real ICS lite 1.1 with Rage kernel 3.2 and it's smooth and quick on my X mini
I flashed Real ICS Lite ROM a couple of days ago... In combination with Rage kernel, and maybe a few tweaks, I must say it has the best battery life I've seen so far
And it's fast and stable so far.
Hi people..
I have just unlocked my bootloader.. Can you please suggest ICS Roms for better and smooth performance than the stock Rom and the appropriate kernels for them!
And should I first install the rom or kernel?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
First kernel, then rom.
Head out to dev section and have fun in testing and finding which is best for you. Everyone have different opinions. But try aosp or aokp roms
try the new xperia pureness v3 its amazing, its still beta but its very good
You can try night elf kernel plus ka21.1 ics rom.
Sent from my MT11i using xda premium
if u want smooth working phone install Polish Blood....
if u want customized with toggles and everything use AKOP,CM9
if u want stock rom use Spacious, smooth and light ICS
but if u want everything working perfectly & smoothly go back to a GB Rom -- codename_ei8ht-----a super rom by a super dev:good:
Get codename eight by emann... on gb..
Else for ics.. try otu whatever u can... i prefer aokp only.. and spacious by shradul..
Rest.. well.. not meant for me atleast..
I use Paranoid Hybrid based on Cynogenmod 9 unofficial version. It's heck of a ROM to start with. You get Cyno feel along with ICS 4.0.4 and also toggle between Tablet UI and Phone UI. It's smooth, fast and gives what you want. You can also use variety of Themes available for Cynogenmod. Please use FXP Kernel.

Though I agree that the rom is excellent, I would stick to 20.1 until issues with the market, gallery, walkman etc is resolved. 20.1 just comes off as a more stable release and recommended for those who don't want to spend time configuring after install. Just my opinion..
A good tip might be to use titanium backup, which can also backup contacts and text messages. Since you often need to format when switching or updating roms.
Kernel & ROM Combo
I also have the Night Elf Kernel plus KA21.1 ICS ROM. No need to factory reset if unlocked and already running a previous version of KA. No issue what so ever on my SE Neo Mt15a
