Just updated to ICS from stock system/rom and having issues... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Alright so I've never rooted my phone or done anything fancy with it as far as that goes. Recently the ICS update was released and I didn't update right away, wasn't sure how bad it would mess up my current settings etc. After reading that it retained all my settings and functionality I decided to upgrade. Ok so first off I can't Tether anymore and my portable wifi hotspot does not work either, I'm on Rogers and in Canada, never heard of 'tethering plans' such as other people refer to with AT&T. I have my 4g enabled, can retrieve internet access, and as soon as I turn on my portable hotspot my phone is unable to access the 4g anymore, It enables a wifi hotspot but anything that connects to it gets limited connectivity and can't access the internet either. It's like the phone just shuts it off automatically. I used to use this all the time and was one of my favorite features about my phone.. If I'm unable to use this I don't even want the data plan that I currently have, the data plan I decided on DUE to this feature.. So I'm gonna be pretty pissed off if this amazing little update is trying to force me to pay for something that I already pay extra to utilize properly.
I could be wrong here but I'm pretty damn sure that the battery life has dropped by close to 20% I can watch the percentage go down while I'm doing stuff and it seems to be losing life a lot quicker now, and I noticed that after the first day of using ICS. The resolution on the unlock screen seems to be botched, It's very squished... My old version never did this, and it's kind of annoying for my background images and having the clock looking out of whack.
I'm not sure what to do, there doesn't seem to be an update and as far as I know the update has been out for awhile now, why hasn't this stuff been fixed, who can I make official complaints to as far as Samsung or Rogers goes? I've checked these forums a bit and people seem to be having a lot of issues, some similar to mine some not, some I may have just had the luck to avoid so far. Is factory reset the only real option to fix things, and will that even help my tethering issues?

Anyone? :\
Is there a way to revert back to the old version?
There's a definite increase in battery drain while the device is just sitting there with the screen turned off doing nothing and the tethering thing is really annoying...

Hysterics, yeah, same issue here. Waited for ICS update before I decided to go custom. So I just updated last week and have noticed faster battery drain and my hotspot no longer works.
It blanks out and after 30 seconds it gives you a message "Unfortunately Settings Has Stopped"
How master resets have you done?
I haven't done it yet, but I've heard a multiple master reset may fix the problem.
It's just doing a reset is a pain in the arse!

Yes,
there is a return to stock option for you...it can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Read, read, read....
This method "will" return you to factory state. And you must read the entire thread, and follow the links to get a working device again.
hope this helps you.....g

Just noticed this thread is a month old....And you likely have a solution by now.
Now posted for future reference.
OP, if you see this, and meet with success, please place the word "solved" in the thread title.
It will steer other users to your solution, and help keep the threads clean.
Thank you !!....g

For me what stinks besides the battery and hotspot everything else seems to work great.
Just hate to have to go through the master reset for one issue. As opposed if I had sevral issues.
But it is what it is I guess!

What "it is" is that OTA upgrades to ICS are problematic.
I'd prefer flashing ICS directly through Odin using a stock ROM from samfirmware.com

Agreed...Odin is the best path...IMHO....g

Idk if Hysterics solved his/her problem, but I'm probably going to have to go down this path.

WiFi Won't Disconnect Issue

Hey guys, I'm new here so let me know if Im messing up any board rules or customs!
I did a quick search but didn't hit on any exact results... I connect to my home or work WiFi without any drops (which is a whole other situation) but once I leave the range of the WiFi network my EVO doesn't realize and stays connected which means I won't get emails because there is no active connection... So far my only fix has been to turn my WiFi on and off again.. is anybody else seeing this?
It's not the end of the world just a minor nuisance! Im set to auto frequency, best performance and always keep WiFi on during sleep. I feel like that last one might be the issue but I don't want to go to 3G on standby!
Thanks

I have read about some other people having the same issue here. Wifi as a whole is very glitchy on this device right now and hopefully fixes will be part og hts's fist update.
I am experiencing the same issue. Would love to know how to resolve it.

I'm also experiencing this. It is slightly annoying, but not a deal breaker. I'm sure it'll be fixed soon enough.
Mine does this as well, but goes a step further. Once I leave the Wifi area I can toggle Wifi off to drop the connection and use 3G. However, when I go back to a wifi area, any network ive previously connected to states not in range. I can pick up new networks, but not existing networks. The only solution is to reboot the device.
Is something the HTC set for battery saving, what happens when you connected to wifi with any device is that it check every 60-90-180seconds (wherever the programmer set) so your phone won't check right away, but when it does it will disconnect, every phone has it but probably HTC put up a high number that way it saves more battery

This is starting to get quite frustrating. If I leave the house and need to use navigation or anything requiring data I have to toggle wifi off. Has anyone figured this out or is it potentially a hardware issue where I should seek a replacement?
I made a thread about returning my EVO for another one. I had the same issue. The second EVO is working perfect so far. Way better battery life with this one too.

Were you by chance also having issues with MMS downloading? I really like the phone but some of these little quirks are starting to annoy me.
Anyone else having this problem? I haven't seen a fix or any other posts which makes Mr think this may be a device issue. Thanks for any help.

I flashed the OTA today hoping it would rectify and it has not. I am rooted, s-off, TWRP so my options are open for mods but don't know what to look for here. Anyone, anyone? :fingers-crossed:

I spoke with HTC yesterday and they were not aware of a widespread issue with this. When I get more time I will dig into it a bit more as I believe it can probably be fixed with mods to wpa_supplicant. In the meantime, I will be sending some logs to HTC as well.

It's definitely software-based, as it didn't happen with MaXimus 2.1 or CM10, but DOES happen with MaXimus 2.2 and the stock ROM. Oddly, it never happened with the stock ROM before now.
Does it happen to you on more than one WiFi network?

Also things like browsing through Facebook can eat up 5% of my battery in five or ten minutes... I know for sure that it never used to do that. I don't get why the battery life would be effected so drastically, but even when It's just sitting around while I sleep I lose a higher % of battery life than I did before... I've browsed through various threads but there doesn't seem to be many options, is anyone able to respond to the issues I'm having?
Flash a custom ROM. It's easy, and the experience is much better. There are guides in the stickies on everything you need to do.

Like he said above me, flashing a custom rom would fix your problems. I'd recommend CM9 ICS. It's pretty stable and my favorite so far. Downside is you lose S-Pen functionality.

I had the same problem and found two possible solutions:
1- I installed foxfi and i was able to use the wifi hotspot. I still wasn't able to access the native wifi hotspot functionality on the phone, but foxfi did the same thing so no big deal.
2- factory reset. this option is a little radical, but as has been explained elsewhere on this forum, the upgrade doesn't clear some configurations that remain from the GB ROM and those conflict with things like wifi hotspot and cardock and several other things.
I had to eventually do the factory reset. It was a nuisance because i had to reinstall everything, but now my phone works great and I can access all the native functionality.
You could also flash a custom ROM, but I have done it and while they are faster and sexier than the STOK ROM you always have to give up some functionality and they always have some bugs, and once you start flashing custom ROMs you can get OFD and we may lose you forever... (I had it from my windows mobile days and I would flash a new ROM sometimes more than once per day)..
Root (flash cwm with Odin), do a factory reset, and then flash the rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock rom. You won't lose ANY functionality, and your phone will be quick as hell again -- or even faster.
Like paleh0rse state...
Here is the thread with all the listing for stock LF6; tools that may be required. Along with all the ROMs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367
If you gonna flash a rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock ROM, no need to root before hand, just put CWM on and flash away.
Foxfi worked for me. But it doesn't connect right away to the Internet, had to inniate a browser then it connected.

XDA is no longer worth my time.
Factory reset fixed it for me.
TimOster; I did not use Klies, I am with Rogers so I assume it was one of their Roms, It was a wireless download but through my homes Wifi I believe. And I don't really think I did it manually, I got an update message on my phone one day didn't even realize it was ICS at first, but of course it gave me lots of warnings and obviously realized what it was before doing it, but I wasn't expecting this lol, I wish I had checked it out online first I would have seen all the complaints and just stuck with the old version.
I'm thinking about trying a factory reset first, and if that doesn't fix things, mainly the battery issues, then I'll try a stock rom.
No one seems to mention anything about the battery usage though, am I the only one noticing this effect? :\
XDA is no longer worth my time.

[SOLVED] If my phone were your wife/mom's. (somewhat better, now GPS broken)

UPDATE: Thank you guys so much for the help! My phone is running well so far! The GPS works well enough for navigation, and I should hopefully be able to limp through until my full upgrade. I can't tell you guys how thankful I am that you all took the time to help me answer my questions and get my phone going again!
what would you do? I have a Vibrant, and have done quite a lot of troubleshooting with it. Tmo's tech support said it's a hardware issue and that they've done all they can.
I've tried just about all the Froyo ROMs on it, and things seem to work well for a while, then it gets odd. I regularly clear my call logs, messages, and browser cache. I use wifi whenever I'm at home, and whenever I'm in the minivan I have my phone plugged in.
I am currently running Axura - Moped/FishmanMod v1. This has seemed to work the longest.
Lately, though, I've been missing phone calls...as in, no notification, no log, nada. I rebooted last week and suddenly had a voicemail icon...I had 7 new voicemails. One from my son's teacher. I never knew she even called. I've since reinstalled Tmo Visual Voicemail and at least now I think I'm getting my voicemails. Missing phone calls can't happen though. We don't have a landline, and we have a child with health issues. I have to be available.
Other issues:
*My battery died about halfway through the day yesterday, even though it had charged fully overnight.
*This thing is slowing down. As in, taking a photo with my phone isn't really viable. By the time it finally snaps the picture, my kiddo has grown an inch.
*Lag! I'm using Swiftkey X and it often hangs on a key for several seconds before finally typing it. It's very slow to open apps, etc as well.
Does anyone have any more advice for me? I'd love to run an ICS or JB ROM, but having the ability to call 911 is not negotiable for me. Woodrube and some others have given me some great advice, which has helped, but I'm still having some issues.
I could pare down the apps and use it just as a phone, but what would be the point of having an Android...and data? I need the calendar, email, task list, etc. to keep track of everyone.
I'd love to try to figure out how to make this phone last longer. I could upgrade now, but our checkbook doesn't like the idea.
Personally I'd Odin back to stock JFD and either do a reflash or pick a new ROM (bionix comes to mind).
Could do a fresh install of the apps you want on your phone. Your battery could be going bad and may need to be replaced, and if your sim card is getting old, you may need to stop by T-Mobile and have them replace it.
Not sure if that could be the trouble with your notifications or voicemail, but they are all quick things to try that should be cheap and quite possibly very effective.

Well, although it isn't too helpful to say...I honestly believe that if you simply must be available because you have a child with health issues, you definitely should not be tinkering with your device. True, my phone runs better, faster, stronger, and longer (ha daft punk) than it did running stock, but I have certainly had the occasional issue such as data issues, force closes, battery drains, SODs, etc, etc...it's simply a fundamental part of the life of modifying your phone. It's not to say that you won't have issues if you kept it stock, but you really shouldn't be messing with your phone if you don't have a land line and you NEED to be available for something so important.
Now, onward!
I will look into similar occurrences of your problems and report back..(sorry in class atm, then off to a meeting). Until then, Gl!
you could try and use a cyanogenmod based Rom. They are one of the best roms out there except you can't as of right now call 911 (some phones can and some cant ) also gps is semi-broken.

Thanks for the advice, but not an option. I have to have 911 capability, and we're pretty active geocachers, so my GPS gets used a ton. I've been so tempted by CM Roms, and my husband is rocking one on his One S, but going without 911 isn't an option.
After this last round of my phone's slowness, we did ODIN back to stock, then did the ((*^&^%$*&^) updating it to Froyo. (Yay!) We were hoping that taking it back to stock would help our issues, but it actually seemed slower. (And oh, the agony of using TouchWiz!) I very, very carefully added back ONLY the apps I used on a daily basis, watching carefully to see if there were any issues. It was crazy slow.
We then went to this last ROM and I added back apps even more slowly. I noticed that I had issues after I put the Zedge app back on, so it's gone. I also noticed that it acted funky after I put Google Goggles on, so it's gone as well.
I am not, by the way, storing any music on my device. I stream it through Google Music.
I do have another battery for it. I'll put Battery Calibration on and swap batteries to see if that helps. Good idea.
Also, my SIM is pretty old. I hadn't thought about seeing if I could get a new one! I know it solved some issue LONG ago with my BlackBerry. I'll see if I can do that at our TMo store today. Appreciate that suggestion.
I've been just about the give up on this phone altogether and just going with the One S like The Hubs, but forking over the money for it (not to mention that it would be $200 for me and $49.99 for a new contract!) is just not in the budget now. Might be getting close to something we just can't avoid though.
Try flashing back to stock 2.1 with repartition checked. Then flash one of Fishman/Moped 2.2 ROMS ( he has odin files if you prefer that method). I think you may still have some "ghosts" left behind from the last ROM or two you had on your phone. A fresh odin to stock with repartition checked should get rid of any "ghosts". Also when restoring apps make sure you restore app only, not app+data. Remember, after installing a ROM allow your phone to sit for a good 10 minutes then reboot before you use the phone.

That could definitely be it. I used to just restore all my apps+data with My Backup Root. I'll see if I can convince The Hubs to help me work on the phone this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
Okay, we did the repartition flash, then put it on FishmanMod Blue 2.2 Frankenstein Slim. Seems to be running a little better, but now my GPS won't lock at all. I've rebooted, tried Samsung GPS Restore (never locks) and GPS Test. Test sees 4-5 satellites but doesn't ever lock on. I've tried Nav as well and it is not able to lock on.
I've checked our forums and I see a lot of fixes, but no recent fixes and most of them are for 2.1. I've tried dialing the *#*# numbers, but they don't do anything.
I sure could use some suggestions. I'd like to be able to use my GPS. I know it's generally an issue with Vibrants, but mine has never failed to lock on before. Might be slow, might take it until the end of the block, but it always locks. Until now...
Thanks in advance!
Go to the Dev section and look for a thread called GPS Fixes by Solisfiend. It'll be buried way back and I'm mobile so I can't link it. It has directions and app to fix Froyo GPS.
I have 2 posts in there, 1 is clarification of some things and the other is a download app you can use. Should work well for you.
Thank you, Woodrube. I'll do just that.

[Q] 4.2.2 WIFI tethering workaround?

I love the CM 10.1 build of 4.2.2. It is my dream phone right now. The problem is that no WIFI tethering works on it as of yet. If anyone has anything working I'd love to be proven wrong. This is a show-stopper for me. I can't use bluetooth because my laptop doesn't have bluetooth.
I tried every tethering app out there. Barnacle was the best in that it reported the errors it was seeing instead of just refusing to work.
Anyway, I am thinking of working around the problem by keeping a ROM stored as a TWRP backup that I can restore when I need tethering. I don't need tethering on a moment's notice.
I would like the tethering ROM as slim as possible. I haven't tried any yet. Would a restore be any faster with a slim ROM?
Can someone suggest what ROM I should use that has a small footprint and can restore quickly? I'm thinking that I won't have any apps and no account logged in. If I'm tethering I will be using the other device for email etc. And I'm sure the phone will work no matter what I'm running.
Can anyone suggest a better workaround than this?
I pretty much tether all day with my jellybam install. It has been a rock solid performer on my note and has kept me from having the itch to try any of the 4.2.1 ROMs.
There is supposed to be a new version released tomorrow, but quite frankly , I don't know whether I'll bother as the current version is exceptionally stable ( with flaps kernel )...
I'm sure with cm 10.1 going nightly, they'll have tethering fixed shortly. Its a pretty important feature for many of us.

I tried jellyblam for quincyatt and I got a boot loop. I went back to recovery and wiped everything again, reinstalled, and I still got a boot loop. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds like a bad download...Did you download straight to your phone? While I've never had this issue, I have heard that some prefer to download to their computers and transfer the zip to their phones..
You might be right. I did download it to my PC and copy over the zip. However, I had trouble copying and I had to copy a second time. So, I'll try again.
I did a fresh download, copied, wiped, flashed, and it didn't work. Apparently bam won't run on my phone.
...and your using the latest version of twrp?
Yes. I checked. I might be doing something wrong but I doubt it. I'm guessing there is a bug somewhere that rarely shows up. Until the source code is available these custom roms are somewhat a shot in the dark.
I'm just going to go back to my ICS backup when i need tethering. I guess I started this thread with the hope that someone would have a workaround. I really like 4.2.2 and I've decided to live with this. Maybe it will be fixed soon?
Thanks for your help.
The only tethering app that seems to work is "Open Garden." It's in the Play Store but you'll have to side-load it if on AT&T.

thx -- I couldn't find apk anywhere, I'll look again. Is that bluetooth only? I need wifi.
apk is not on their home page. Any idea where to find it?
How do you keep AT&T from seeing that you're tethering?

I don't know who you are replying to, but I tethered all the time with ATT when using ICS. I didn't know they were trying to block it.
For a while they were changing people's plans to a tethering plan if AT&T caught them tethering. I got a warning email myself.

I know that Verizon has folded tethering into the normal data plans. They make it sound like a benefit but they're raising the overall price so they are really forcing you to buy tethering. I thought ATT and the others were going the same way.
I assume they realized they couldn't enforce it any other way.

Assuming you're looking for Open Garden, go to http://www.open garden.com and tap the big orange Get APK button to download.

I've been to their home page a million times because everyone said you could get the apk there. I was going crazy because all I ever saw was a big orange button to download a version for windows. I had just now typed a reply to you that said you were crazy and then it hit me. You meant to go there on the phone! I'd only been there from my laptop.
Thanks, I'll give it a try now.
-- later --
As I feared, open garden is bluetooth only.
I was researching the hotspot issue that only a few users have been having and found that it is inherent to android 4.1.2 and newer. What I found out:
"Throughout the previous iterations of Android (<4.1.2), Android has not identified for the carriers which data is for tethering, and which is not.
Android 4.1.2 introduced that ability (and requirement) for Android devices to properly flag when data is for tethering purposes. This is the first time this has been used in a vanilla release of Android...
For everyone frustrated by this update to Android: Android respecting a carrier's request to know if data is for a tethered device IS NOT A BUG. IT IS A FEATURE. It's not a feature for users like you and me, it's a feature for manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, so they can in turn build devices that carriers can have more control over.
So, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BUG. Google INTENDED to respect carrier tethering rules. The only way to circumvent this is to either get a plan from your carrier that allows tethering, revert to a build of Android of 4.1.1 or earlier (I used wugfresh NRT tools, google it, they're amazing and simple: FOR NEXUS DEVICES ONLY, SORRY), or for a developer to find and KILL THE ****ING ABILITY FOR ANDROID TO TAG DATA AS TETHERING DATA and release that to the public; either by providing an modded Android image, or as an app (much less likely to work unless you're rooted)."
Copied from a past on another forum, and apparently I can't post a link to it.
Even though I clicked on Thanks, I'd like to thank you again for that clear explanation. I'm sure it won't take long for that to be hacked.
i think the next nightly may fix it
Next to fix on next Nightly

I sent JamieD a message about it a few days ago. I'm not sure if all developers were aware with source of the problem. Its especially hard when only some users report having an issue. Hopefully they get it working soon.

GSM/CDMA... Not even sure what to put on the subject line.

So I just wanted to share something really weird and ask if anyone has ever seen anything like it before.
I recently flashed the last AOKP update, and my phone was running phenomenally. I went out last night and my battery died because I forgot to charge it... No biggie. Got home, turned it on, no signal. Odd, since I have pretty decent service in the area. After doing the usual troubleshooting of cycling airplane mode, I tried pulling the battery and sim. That also didn't work. I went into settings to check my APNs, and instead of the usual menu, I saw only 4 options. The option to select APNs wasn't even there. The last one said "Set CDMA..." something. I forget the rest. Wish I had remembered to take a screenshot. In "About Phone", my baseband was blank. Tried reflashing back to LC5 radio. Still nothing. Did a full wipe and reflash of the ROM, and that got me back in business. Right now, all is well. I was just unaware that a phone could magically switch over to CDMA, even if there is no CDMA radio in an i777.
Any thoughts on the cause?
EDIT:
ROM: Task's AOKP 4.14
Kernel: Stock
Radio: UCLL6 when issue started. Now on UCPLC5
Not an issue that's related to the rom, as far as I know. Unless others have reported this issue and I've missed it. If you do a full wipe and re flash as you've done and don't install any programs for a good 24 to 48 hours, and nothing of the sort happens again, odds are it has something to do with an app you installed. Unless your service provider maybe was experiencing problems at the time.

No, definitely an anomaly. Not something that anyone else has reported. I called AT&T to verify if there were any issues in the area or with my account, and everything checked out. I haven't downloaded a new application in months. I restored from TiBu right after reflashing and everything is still good. Like I said, not trying to report it or anything; just looking for thoughts.
You meant APN and baseband NEVER come to live? If that's the case, then I haven't heard or read any report about it.
If it's up and running like normal AFTER 5 minutes, then it's has been reported many many times last week.

No... More like APN and baseband were completely fine for almost a week, and then it suddenly stopped working while I was asleep.

Well, that's new to me.
Reflash with clean installtion?
I know none of us want to factory reset but some cases, we have to.
This is odd but in no way, shape, or form can a i777 transform its hardware to support CDMA

This is what I thought. I have a feeling that since AOKP is based of CM, there is code built in to support both CDMA and GSM. Somehow, the software glitched, and made the switch.

I don't know how you did it, but I'm glad you were able to reproduce the issue. At least I know I'm not crazy.
