If you have stock gingerbread System.sin then extract it using "aIUP.exe" and use following command "aIUP.exe system.sin 2048 system" (you can use value 4096 or 8192 instead of 2048). and if you have ICS system.sin then extract it using Flashtool, for that open flashtool>Advance>sin editor, select system.sin file and click on Dump data you can use this for gingerbread also.

it's not easy as you think. to flash the rom, you need rooted system.sin. .sin files only can be signed by sonyericsson.
take a look at this thread instead. all your idea is in this. lol. btw, this method works

usage: system.sin System.img

This is freakin' brilliant! Thanks!
Edit: Make a Linux version.

It works with mono?
Edit: Okay.. So now it's a .img file. How do I crack this open and start playing around with it?

it is actually yaffs v2.0 but mounting should be possible in linux
in win32 can be extracted with tool unyaffs.exe
Can anyone reupload the SIN2IMG tool ? I can't find any valid download link for it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979912
use aIUP from here rather...
I only need to convert it to img... i dont need to unpack it... Why there isn't any mirror with that tool ? is there something wrong with it ?
Any one know how? or how to add and remove a file in the .ftf in flashtools?
1.Unpack .ftf file(as .zip or .rar) to get the file : system.sin
2.Use SIN2IMG.exe to transfer system.sin into system.img
3.Use unyaffs.exe to upack the system.img into resources you need
You can download SIN2IMG & unyaffs from the Internet
It's not an easy thing to add resources into .ftf file
Actually,Linux enviornment is required to pack the resources into .img file
But you may use Cygwin(HTC [email protected]) to help you do such things.

Thanks, now how do I repack it to .ftf ?
i need the same help
Unless you are modifying the baseband or kernel, it may be easier to make an xrecovery zip from system.img once you unpack and modify it however you want to.
Seems all 2.3.3 SE roms are on the same kernel/BB so if you're on the right ones already all you'll need is an xrec zip to build the rest. If you are on an older/different kernel/BB then Doomlord has an ftf package with just those 2 things & detailed instructions on how to get it going.

how were you able to unpack the .img file
I am able to extract the system.sin
then create a system.img with sin2img.exe, but when I try to unpack the .img file, unyaffs.exe only gives me stackfiles and not a new directory.
can you help with this, am I doing something wrong ?
if having trouble creating ftf try checking this thread out

Thanks for the links i already got guides to make my own rom.Am using dsixda' android kitchen and as the per the instruction given. For xperia x10
"First reinstall a Android 2.1.
Then root it.
Install a XRecovery.
Then backup it.
Now you will get system.img in backup folder."
My doubt is wether this backup should be dont with the stock rom itself or can i use an existing custom rom?And if it should be from stock rom then is it enough use the system.img file obtain by extracting ftf and then using sin2img?

Nobody?
especiallyl SIN2IMG ... the other is in the repository of ubuntu
The reason behind to post this guide, if you had forgotten to make backup before flashing any mod. you don't need to write a post for getting the files of stock one.
you can get it from your ftf file and drag n drop into that flashable.zip which one you applied.
&
Rom porter can easily get the system dump.....
Before going to proceed this tutorial you need
your desired ftf file which you want to extract.
winrar
Flashtool
ext4_unpacker [ attached ]
Instructions:
First,
open your ftf file via winrar and get the system.sin file.
Second,
open Flashtool
go to Tools -> Sin Editor
click on '...' button
open the system.sin
click 'Dump data' button
wait untill flastool shows 'Data Extraction finished'
Note: the below method depends on which one you get. 1st one is for yaffs2 & 2nd one is for ext4
Third,
open Flashtool
go to Tools -> Extractors -> yaffs2
open system.yaffs2
extraction will start
wait untill flashtool shows 'Extraction finished'
now you get the system dump.
for system.ext4
open ext4_unpacker
click on the 'folder icon'
open system.ext4
select all
click right button of mouse
click Extract
select the destination folder where the files of system.ext4 will be extracted
Done
sorry, for my bad presentation
if it helps you don't forget to click on thanks button.
Thanks ! I will test that later !

Xperia C - Updated
Hi mates,
Would it be possible for anyone to upload a CWM flashable Xperia C ROM with the latest update of 16.0.B.2.13 because I cannot really extract the folders from system.ext4. I have tried using all version of flashtool by androxyde and unyaffs. Even did the unpacking through cmd (aIUP.exe) but still no lack.
Or maybe someone can suggest better and updated reader for ext4. Thanks!
Sorry guys, it seems the ftf file was signed by sony that is why its hard to extract the EXT4 extension

here is one
http://www.mediafire.com/download/dacbs4mb2fc9rrv/GB_4.0.2.A.0.84_LWW.zip
.
.
.
but i'd suggest you create 1 urself.
method
1. Get the stock rom .ftf file open it and get the system.sin out via winrar
2. Then open Flashtool and select sin editor. and then select the system.sin u just unpacked.
3. Select Dump data and you will get a file with extention like yalf2 or something which will be arroun 400-500 MBs
4. Then Go to Flashtool >advanced > decrypt file > yalf2
5. Then Select The file and after its decrypted then u can get the /system folder
get the META-INF from here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1791669&d=1362840715
7 . Archive The two folders with winrar to zip using only store compression
.
.
Then flash it
