So This happened about a month ago.. Ironically same night of the week (Saturday night) So I got lucky i didn't have work the next morning so my Alarm didn't need to go off.
I was originally HTC Unlocked, Now I am S-OFF. The first time this happened is when I was HTC Unlocked, the 2nd time, S-OFF.
Phone was not turned off. Phone was at good battery life (~90%). I hit the power button, screen would not turn on. I plug it into charge, light does not come on. I have to hold down the Volume Down+Power for a while, then eventually it resets itself.
Now, I do not think this is ROM or Baseband+Radio Specific because I'm on completetly different ROM/Baseband then I was earlier. And also, this is the 2nd time it happened since I had the phone.
I'm running 1.05.11.0606 Baseband, 2.45_003 PRI, MeanRom ICS. However... I'm almost certain it's not a ROM specific issue because I was running a totally different one.
It *COULD* be an app. However I am very picky and make sure almost nothing is running in the background of my phone (just the internet browser).
Does anyone have any idea why my phone would go into this sort of... "Deep Sleep" in the middle of the night, and not wake out of it? Where it's happened only on a Saturday Night so far. There is also NO way I can think of replicating it. If I install Logcat, Will I even be able to monitor something like this?
Edit: I must note, both times it was NOT plugged in charging. Usually I have my phone charging overnight. I'm going to start charging my phone before going to sleep to keep it unplugged while sleeping to see what happens
Thanks..
Mark
Bump...
So I was at work today and was using my phone with no problem, Came back to it when I was leaving, hit the power button to turn on the screen and nothing...
Needed to hold the power + volume down button for about 20 seconds for it to boot up again.
I can't seem to narrow it down if it's a hardware, software, or kernel issue. It seems like it's hard locking up while sleeping (can't charge it at this point either). I am going to do a full wipe, reinstall apps one more time, and see what happens.
What Rom are you running?
Sent from my HTC Evo LTE
This sounds like a hardware panic, that would need specific diagnostics run, in order to identify potential root-cause issues. That might mean taking your battery out and hooking it up to a tester, etc.

After it happened and you rebooted the phone, you need to get last_kmsg and send it to developer of the rom you are on. He might be able to figure out the problem.

i think mine charges the battery up to 99% but to be honest, i haven't focused attention on the exact percentage.
I did the OTA to 1.13 and it patches quite a few things. i don't think you *have* to update and i haven't noticed much difference before and after. the only official update information i quickly saw was from searching google was this: http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo3d-sprint/downloads/ . They describe the update as : This update fixes issue of calendar entries in certain formats force closing during edits . Looking at the update .zip file, I pulled it from the cache before loading it, it touches a lot of files. Perhaps somebody has more details on the OTA ...
I remember back when I first got my EVO3D on launch day it to for dreaming ever to fully charge.

Most of the time, mine seems to cap out at 99%. It did that the first couple of nights I had it (where it spent the whole night on the charger), as well as when I've plugged it in at work. Today I saw 100% for the first time.
Doesn't worry me.
Does the same for me. If I in plug it, then plug it back in and wait about 20 min it finally gets to 100 percent. Pretty strange I'd say. I'm on silverneedle and viper-rom btw.
Well, at 3 am floridian time, my evo decided to turn off, and never turn on again. left batt out, charge for 24 hours, even tried to get to bootloader, i get nothing

wow, this is definitely different scenario than your OP.
when you press power on the phone, there is absolutely no response? LED doesn't flash at all, screen wont turn on? you've tried the vol down + pwr and vol up + pwr?
the only easy solution i can think of is a bad battery. and by easy, i mean you could get a new battery and see if the phone turns on and that would be a cheaper easy fix. otherwise, i'd probably take it back to where you bought it and/or sprint as it definitely sounds like a hardware issue.
if you aren't able to turn it on, they shouldn't be able to either. as long as your water/wet stickers show the phone hasn't been wet, they should be able to replace it.
good luck! let us know how it turns out!

Well, the stickers are normal, concidering i just bought it yesterday and i looked
and well, i charged it fully, 100% and made a ~2 hour phone call and got to 68%. then it sat for an hour while on psn call of duty, then i went to reboot for thr OTA, and it just went BLEH. NO leds, no screen, no nada.
Just a half lit charging led wven though NO charger connected.
EDIT
Went to best buy and the guy examined the phone like a car. and was completely astounded that it wont turn on. tried 3 chargers and a new battery and ended up replacing it xD
Last night, for no apparent reason, my EVOLTE decided it didn't want to turn on.
I hit the power button to turn on the screen and got nothing. It was odd because I should have had plenty of battery so I held the power button down and still nothing, except the capacitive buttons flashed a few times.
I figured something happened and my battery drained completely. Got in the car and plugged the phone into the charger and didn't even get the orange charging light. Waited a few minutes, tried to power it on again, still nothing but blinking lights.
Then I just decided to hold the power button for a really long time. Lights blinked, then stopped. I kept holding the power button and still nothing, set the phone on the passenger seat (all this time it was plugged in about 15 min) and out of nowhere, boom, it starts booting up.
Once it booted up completely, everything was normal and I had 73% battery. No way it would have gotten to 73% in 15 min if it had drained completely.
Still no idea what happened.
Hopefully someone can help you that had the same issue but its definitely uncommon.

Are you running stock or a rooted ROM, dev ROM, etc.? If stock, you might be in a handset replacement scenario. Sprint can run diags on it.

I too have had this happen a number of times since the OTA update. I'm stock, non-rooted.
Very annoying to have to wait until phone decides it's going to turn back on.
I just had this happen for the first time to me right now. So far hasn't turned back on.
It happened to me at the first few weeks. I tried all combo's, not sure which one worked. Try holding all of them down, I may have just started button mashing towards the end.
I am stock unrooted and took the OTA.
I did try to boot into bootloader which also did not work.
Glad (not really) to hear that it has happened to others. Thought about taking it to Sprint, might still do that.
Anyone else that had this issue take theirs to Sprint for diagnostics?

No, it was power and volume up. I am on the phone so I don't want to search, but holding those together got my phone back.
That happened to me with fast boot enabled, holding power button brought it back. I don't use fast boot anymore lol

This same thing happened to me. Turned the phone off to take it out of my defender and wipe it down. When I went to power back on nothing. Plugged into power and got no led. I had fast boot on. I now have fastboot off hopefully I don't run into this again. But I agree I am somewhat happy to see this has happened to others since the OTA. Btw I am stock unrooted.

So, I'm running Ognimnella's 3D Anorexia using Mac kernel, no tweaks, no overclock other than what the kernel is set as for stock, 1.56Ghz I believe. I checked; No water damage either. Last night I remapped my search key to recent apps, and this morning was looking for a way to re-implement the search key function somewhere else. So, I was looking for a way to remap the long press to no avail. Eventually i started looking around in the sys/usr files for something referencing the long press home button to bring up APP_SWITCH so i could remap that to SEARCH and didn't really find anything. However I found a file, I can't remember the name, I don't even know if it's relevant, where the camera button functions were located. I attempted to remap the "FOCUS" key to SEARCH and saved the text, and rebooted to apply changes, (possibly, I didn't even know if it was going to work).
However after leaving it sit for around 2-3 minutes while otherwise occupied, I came back expecting to find it booted up however it was still off. I attempted to turn the phone on, no cigar. Plugged it into my charger. No red light. Nothing. Tried to boot into bootloader. No beans. Tried to use ADB to "adb reboot-bootloader" and it says "no device found." And when I plug it into my computer a strange 3-beep comes through, kinda like when you normally connect a usb, but 3 fast beeps instead of two. I also downloaded the [UNBRICK] file from the sticky and Unknownforces all in one tool and tried em both out in Ubuntu. Neither one of their tools detects my phone after plugging it in. I've tried battery pulls, leaving the battery out for 20 minutes, leaving it on the charger for a half hour, trying to boot without the SD in, and even trying to press camera and volume.
Basically, am i SOL? Did I hard brick my phone, even though I wasn't even flashing anything? And finally, is there anything I could do?
did u use a cdma on gsm as far as the unbricking and do u have cdma or gsm? also were u using the room for a while or just flashed? what radios and hboot ?
Well, I'm CDMA and was hboot 1.5 juopunut S-OFF, had been for going on 3 months, and had flashed it about a day ago and everything was going fine. As to Radios, I couldn't tell you, I've never messed with that.

another possibility, are you using cwm 4.0.1.4 revolutionary or 4ext recovery? Those are the only 2 recoveries that support charging the phone while it is off.
If you can jump start your battery a little with a 9v and paperclip, might help you boot up to recovery. That or borrow a sensation owners battery to test.
How would i go about doing that?
By the way, I am using TWRP 2.2 and was at 97% when I restarted my phone, and it was early morning and I had just pulled it off the charger ~10 minutes before. Could it have been a bad charge?

oh, twrp should support off mode charge as well, soo hmmm.
The reset combo when phone freezes to just restart, not erase is volume up+down and power held together for 10 or so seconds.
Someone also said to hold camera button when plugging in, then try powering on.
No dice on either method. I'm pretty sure I'm sol, and am going to have to buy a cheapo phone off of eBay if I can't convince a Sprint rep to replace it. But I don't know. Thanks though! I aappreciate it.
Hey,
I have the same issue.
I have another HTC Evo 3d and can verify the battery is fully charged.
However when I put in my other Evo 3d it wont turn on.
Plugging in the cable to a charger does nothing and no LED ever comes on.
However my charger turns different colors when charging and the led turns from green to yellow when i plug the broken evo 3d in so something (current being drawn) is happening but the EVO and the LED just won't turn on. I unlocked the bootloader but the phone is still on Sprint Stock Rom.

Does anyone's phone power off( seems to only happen in my pocket ) and won't power on until I hook it up to some kind of charger? This is my third replacement, got lucky to be able to s-off but, never had this problem on the other devices. Been running synergy 9-7, and superlte r133.... Stock kernel. No odd ball apps. Any help would be great. Tia...

I've been having issues with proximity sensor, only seems like phone is down until battery dies, looks dead though, look to the left of htc logo to see if you see a faded red glow. I don't think that any sense roms have issues with sensor though.
I'm gonnas go back to a 1.22 build and see what happens. I think its a defect in the phone itself though.

What did you find here? My phone is doing the exact same thing. Randomly powers off and will not power back on until I connect to charger. And when it finally boots up battery is at near 100% which means the battery did not die. Didn't see this until after running lazy panda and meanrom but even then, it was fine for a month before this started to happen.

My phone will power cycle sometimes when in my pocket and I'm sitting down. It does it because my leg is pressing the lock/power button. I don't have to plug it in to get it to work though. If nothing else holding the power/lock button for 10 or so seconds will power it back on. Have you tried that??

Yes, held power for 60+ seconds and also tried power/volDown for 60+ seconds. The phone won't do anything until it is plugged back in. I just can't figure this out. I did a hard reset and it still does it. I don't have insurance but the phone is obviously less than a year old. How does sprint handle cases like this these days? Is it in store exchange or a shipment to HTC?

It depends. Is the problem reproducible?? That's one of the things techs would try to do when someone hands them their phone. What I would do if someone gave it to me is flash the software with the RUU.
If they can reproduce it after flashing it with the RUU, as long as there is no abuse/liquid/physical damage, they will replace it in the store. The difficulty you face is being able to reproduce the issue in the store....
They should still flash it for you without being able to reproduce the issue. Have you tried different roms??
I would take it in to them and at least start the process. That way there will be a ticket with your issues on it and if it continues that will be good for you.
(BTW, I think you have to lock your bootloader for the RUU to run. And if they can't run it from the android OS tell them to run it from the bootloader or fastboot. (I know some techs know what they're doing but some are just new at it...))
So I have been trying different things recently and this seems to be EXACTLY as the OP described. It only does this when I put the phone in my pocket. I can be using the phone all day in my cube at work with no problem. I can cruise around with the phone in my car and it's fine. But if i stand up and slide the phone into and out of my pocket, it will be powered down with no way to power back up unless charge cable is plugged in for at least ~15 seconds. I've hard reset and tried different ROM...same behavior. I have not tried going back to S-ON (phone is S-OFF via lazy panda). Any thoughts?
Hperry,
I'm sorry to tell you but, I'm 100% certain that this issue is either a broken USB or from a board fracture. I tried ruu's and multiple wipes of main system to refresh the install but, nothing fixed this. What I did do take the device in multiple times to the same tech until he was tired of me coming in. No insurance makes it a $35 exchange. New phone in hand and no more shut downs.
I'm very sorry you experienced this and I hope this helps you.

I'm completely at a loss here. I was running a 4.3 rom for the past week or two with no issues. Pulled my phone out of my pocket 30 min ago, hit the power button and the screen wouldn't light up. I tried it again and still no go. I tried swiping to unlock, even with the black screen and i felt it vibrate.
Ever since then my phone is non responsive. I can't get it to boot, can't hard reset it, nothing. The vibrates stop when I'm holding down power and down volume but that's about it. I timed the constant vibrates and they happen every 34 seconds according to the Win8 clock (which i've heard in inaccurate).
I'm gonna let the battery drain and hope that it will boot back up after it dies...but until then, any ideas?
Try plugging it into your computer and see what comes up. Which 4.3 ROM were you on?

That's the first thing I tried. I get nothing when i plug it into my comp. Nothing pops up in device manager. The comp doesn't detect it at all.
And I was running the 8/23 release of carbon 4.3 and I didn't have one problem with it until this happened :\
EDIT: The phone's battery finally ran out. It stopped vibrating and after a bit i plugged it in. After a few min it just starting doing it again.
I disassembled the phone and removed the battery for awhile hoping it would somehow help. Didn't do anything. It showed the flashing charge light (like when it's really low) for maybe a minute then it stop lighting up at all. Sometimes if i leave it unplugged for a bit and plug it back in it will flash the light again. That's about all I'm getting out of it now.
I'm thinking something failed internally. It happened while it was on and I was using it so there's no possibility that it was from a flash or anything like that.
Took my phone to the sprint store. The tech wasn't sure either but he thought it might be the screen that died. The vibrating could be the phone trying to boot then realizing there's no screen. They took it apart to check for moisture/damage and said I'm good to go for the $50 replacement.
So my new Evo will be here Tuesday.

Did you resolve the issue?
Did you ever resolve this issue? My Evo LTE started doing the exact same thing this evening and all of the Sprint stores are closed until tomorrow. I figure it's something internal that died and I can't see what it's trying to do... I guess you just got the replacement and didn't ever get it resolved with that particular phone?
