Rooting Problems (Lots of processes stopping unexpectedly) - Motorola Droid X2

Okay I used this tutorial RSD my droid x2 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 so that I could root it using the "Click to root your DROID 3.bat" tool. Not sure if it was the RSD (or sbf?) to 2.3.3 or the root that I'm not doing right but I get several process errors. I can not go to the camera roll because I always get a "process com.motorola.gallery has stopped working" error. I also cannot listen to music on my x2 because "The application Music (process com.android.music) has stopped working".
I just want a clean device without all the Verizon pre-loaded apps on it. I've followed that guide twice and still getting errors. What do I need to to do get my device working again?
Thanks in advance

I wouldn't use that guide, as it is much older than the ones I have followed.
Try using this guide instead. Note that it is based off of 2.3.4, but the process should be the same.
If that doesn't work, I would try 2.3.4 anyway as it is pretty much the latest and greatest.
For rooting, make sure you use this guide.

Yeah you don't want 2.3.3 you want 2.3.4, sbf to that one instead, boot into stock recovery and wipe data and cache. Reboot your phone, root with super one click. Install our BSR and pick a ROM

Okay used the two tutorials mentioned above. Running 2.3.4 and rooted. A few questions though. I used the busybox installer mentioned in the tutorial and it said it installed busybox but I don't have an app icon for it, is this normal? And what does busybox to/what am I supposed to do with it.
Second I need some help installing a custom rom. I like the look of Eclipse but have read that cryogenmod is good as well. Which rom would you recomend? (Doesn't have to be one of those two). Also aware that Eclipse is for 2.3.5 which im not currently on so wondering what I need to do to get there. Thanks

eclipse is really good

You don't really need Busybox installed as it just provides some useful tools for development. However, if the icon isn't showing up I would uninstall it, reinstall it and apply a older release (newest is 1.20.2, try 1.20 or older).
As for ROM's, CM7 is extremely stable and fast. I used to use it until CM9 was released, which looks and feels like ICS which will never "officially" come to our phone.
Eclipse is pretty great I have heard, never used it myself though.
Browse through the ROM's and see which ones interest you. Give them a try, but make sure to follow the directions very carefully

Shadow...don't link to another forum with an older version, nitro puts his stuff right here and its 2.3, and if you wanna link to something else go directly to nitros eclipse page, that being said I think you should do CM7 First, make a Nandroid backup of it then after a full week go try Eclipse 2.3 for a week. By then dkz might well have givin us a new toy to play with

Okay following the tutorial mentioned above for installing Eclipse. One question though, Im lost when it gets to step 6. Install bootstrap. Not sure exactly what this is, there are alot of apps on the play story but not sure if any of them are what I'm supposed to install. Little guidance? Also looking for a tut for step 9. Flash Eclipse.

Bootstrap is a .apk. You need to download it, unzip it and use package installer to install it on your phone. Its system recovery for the x2. Not available in play.

[Q] bionix v by team whiskey

Hey guys looking for some input Im getting a new vibrant and it should have 2.1 stock eclair, I want to flash the bionix v rom, my question is will i need 2.2 froyo before i flash bionix or can i flash from 2.1. or if I need 2.2 how should I go about this step by step please Thanks.
No buddy you will not need to upgrade to 2.2 first. You made a great decision on picking a rom though, best/smoothest one there is IMO. Here is what you should do:
Go to vibrant development forum
Download the AIO vibrant toolbox, it's one of the first stickies.
Install it. Within that toolbox app, install the drivers (i think you also need to have .net 4 installed also which is standard on win7)
Download bionix or whatever rom it is that you want
Make sure your phone is hooked up to the usb and debugging is ON and usb storage is OFF
Click "flash custom rom"
Point the program to your bionix file (which you should have on the computer, NOT the phone!)
Your phone will restart, click reinstall package, it will restart again, and click reinstall packages again. This will bring up your new clockwork mod recovery. Click install update.zip!
Your done!
There is quite a few different ways of doing what you requested, but i would say this is the easiest/most noob friendly way to get started. Hope i helped! You can also send me a pm if you need more one on one help That toolbox is a MUST HAVE regardless of if you follow my directions or not. It will save you if you mess your phone up.

Thanks for replying like a boss!
I am also getting the itch to flash a rom and was going to go with Bionix as well. My only question I have is do i haver to install a different modem as well? I live in Chicago. Will i lose all my apps and data when flashing? Can i still get avatar and sims back on bionix?
I cannot confirm Avatar, I THINK there is a fix for it but right out of the flash I am leaning towards no. Sims should be ok.
I am kinda confused on the question of the apps though. Are you talking about stock apps or ones you dl'ed to the phone?
Stock apps you can reinstall via the bloater app. Extra apps I suggest using Titanium Back up to back them up.
I am not familiar with the AIO toolbox as I have been doing it comfortably the old school way of root, clockwork, flash. If that tool roots for you then dl TB and back up ONLY user apps, not system data. After you flash Bionix you can load them back up.
All the posted Roms come with the modem upgrade, if you do not like the one installed then the Bionix thread also has a link to different modems. Majority of people are experiencing best results with KB1 and KA6.

Should be fine, just root and go. If you can get root and Clockwork then you can flash.

JUST ROOTED ... Market and CloclworkMod ROM Manager are acting funny.

So I just rooted my Thunderbolt and all is well...
(right now after following the rooting steps I went back to 2.2.1)
BUT, I downloaded my ClockWorkMod ROM Manager and the first time it was on I saw one Premium ROM and the others... but today I don't see that ROM there and also some of the links are not working -- I get an "Error Occurred..."
Note sure what it is and with all the talk about upgrading to 2.3 being potentially bad, I would love to know if you think this is something that will be resolved if I upgrade to 2.2.3 or to 2.3? Or is this something else?
Please help.
Also, is there a list of ROMs that are safe? Ones that run 2.3?
Hard to tell, but it kinda sounds like you were only temp. rooted. Make sure your root is permanent. If you see the "Superuser" icon on your phone or are able to download it from the market you still should be rooted. Just something to check.
How did you root? Using adb or 3 click root?
even if your phone already has superuser on it try re-installing it through the market. and if you still have issues try rebooting the phone normally about 4-8 times. (i had to do this to get it working right)
as for roms i recommend using the development forum here, my favorite froyo rom was definitely dasbamf1.7. i am currently running Bamf's 2.0.5 rom, but there is a risk of getting a brick and that risk is in every 2.3 rom. so for now froyo roms are the safest out there.
*another note, only use rom manager to make backups and to get into recovery. all the flashing you do should be done in recovery.
Install busybox.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
No, you are rooted.
The rom you saw in the premium was moved to free, relax.
If it says error occured it's because the dev has nothing there. Not as many people use rom manager as they used to.
Read up in the Development forum some more, All your questions about 2.3 have already been answered there, or that is where you can find your answers.

Flashing Eclipse 2.0.3

When I received my phone, it was on GB 2.3.3. I got the OTA for 2.3.4. I am now rooted, and running Eclipse 1.3, with Speedy 7. I was trying to follow the steps to flash Eclipse 2.0.3, but when I tried to SBF to 2.3.4, it hangs on applying update in bootstrap. It just stays there, and never progresses to install. Is it supposed to take a long time to apply the update since my device was originally 2.3.3? I really want to update to the newest Eclipse, but this troubles me. It is possible I'm doing something wrong, but it does seem straight forward. Any help would be appreciated.
It hangs om applying update in recovery, just to clarify.

Make sure to apply update to 2.3.5 (.412 build) is applied using stock recovery not bootstrap. Phone off. Power and volume down button at same time. Volume down until you see stock recovery then volume up. When you see the triangle hit both volume buttons at same time. From stock recovery you install your update zip. Make sure to rename zip file to update first. Good luck.
Am I flashing 2.3.4 through bootstrap recovery, or stock? That's my issue, I do it through BSR, and it never applies the flash.
I know I need to SBF, but it never works.
To SBF, you need to use RSD Lite in Windows to flash 2.3.4. Once you've done that, apply the 2.3.5 update in android recovery. No need to to root until you've updated to 2.3.5. After you've applied the 2.3.5 update, root, install BSR and then install Eclipse using BSR.
Have a look at the first post in this thread. It looks like a lot but it's not as big a deal as it looks. You can just download the 2.3.4 file and use that. There's no need to do 2.3.3 first.

What does not work? Are you turning your phone off and powering it up and volume up at the same time to start your phone up in rsd mode. If not rsd it will not recognize your phone.
Also, before you SBF, boot into stock recovery and do a factory reset/data wipe.
After that, reboot and using RSD lite to SBF back to 2.3.4.
If you're new to SBFing, here's a link to a great tutorial to help you out:

Congratulations and enjoy. Dont forget to do a nano backup now and then you can play with some themes
Also i would highly recommend v6 supercharger. Moon shadow wrote up a good tutorial on how to install with 2.02 but it is the same for 2.03. If you are interested i can find you the link.

Leave it to me to prove a guide wrong that is not supposed to go wrong.

I upgraded my Razr to the early ICS release months ago. I did lose some features that I had came to love in gingerbread. The guide I used said that at the time it unable to be reverted back, so I just lived with it.
I used my son's Razr that used the OTA upgrade, and it had the other features working correctly, so I was wanting to go to the newest version.
I followed the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735935 and got the "Preflash validation failure" on a couple of lines and an unable to find cdrom error during step 5.
Now it shows the dual core logo, and goes no-where else. I can see that the screen is on if I turn the lights off, but I am not able to get anywhere. I have also read the atrix forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504323 about the errors. This site is becoming so massive that things are getting hard to find. I also followed some other suggestions on other sites, but still nothing.
There are so many people here saying that it was fixed in other ways, but I cannot tell which are considered out of date, and which I should try.
I do not currently care If I go to the newest version, or go to gingerbread and then accept the OTA from Verizon.
Please help.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Liquidd
Just fastboot to .211 then install .215 if you want. Done.

I too like the stock version. What I did and found it works pretty good is use matts utility to root it. I think there's a specific version for .211 and one for. 215. Then get titanium backup and freeze all the bloat ware apps you don't want running. If you do someday want them jut unfreeze them, that easy.
From how I understand it, is freezing them pretty much disables them from starting and ever running, pretty much like they aren't even installed on there. This method has worked great for me and maybe saves battery because your phone never even starts them in the background. Also when there's an OTA I think it checks for certain VZW apps and if they're not installed it won't take the OTA. with TI backup you can just unfreeze them and take the OTA. Hope this helps.

I don't like to mess with the phone with leaks and custom roms.. So i use tibu to freeze things i don't use.
Remember, the key weird us freeze, nit delete or uninstall.. Or u will have hell of u need to update future ota..

Root, install safestrap 2.0, open app and install recovery, reboot phone, when greeted by new recovery prompt press menu button, in recovery create a backup, scroll down and toggle safe system (enable safe system aka dual boot from sd card), format system, wipe data and cache, install the rom of your choice and enjoy!
If you ever want to run stock rom again, just toggle safe system again from recovery (disable it)...phone will boot phone rom again.

[Q] CyanogenMod 10 A3 didn't install correctly... need some help

Hello everyone. I'm a noob.
I have a Droid X2 and Verizon service. It was running Gingerbread 2.3.5 and version 1.3.418, and up until yesterday I hadn't even rooted it. I followed these instructions for CM10 carefully but apparently made a slight mistake.
I made sure to root properly: Superuser worked perfectly, I had Busybox, NANDroid, and Bootstrap Recovery all working, and the phone worked just like before.
In the tutorial I linked to above, I think I know where I went wrong. I downloaded GAPPS 4.2.2 (funky wording since he said 'latest' and then '4.1.x' , so not the latest) and then CM10 A3. I then went into BSR and installed from the external SD card. GAPPS succeeded, but CM10 did not (Status 7, some kernel disapproval or something). When I booted the phone after that, MultiTouch keyboard couldn't start and so I just froze it with Titanium Backup and used Swype because it was annoying. The next thing I tried came from another xda thread (that I seem to have misplaced) saying that removing the top 2 lines of META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script would make it work. I'm pretty sure this failed similarly to before. I then tried wiping all data (since I had backed it up 3 different ways) and installing CM10. It still didn't work, and when I booted I got to my current state of purgatory.
Now when I boot, it tries to run the initial setup but that crashes (and multitouch keyboard crashes too). I've probably lost root access and currently don't have Titanium Backup or any other method to restore from backup since the programs were wiped. I've been trying to do an SBK factory reset using RSD Lite, but the phone won't go into RSD mode.
At this point I just want a working phone again and I'm not sure what to do.
TL;DR: Used the wrong GAPPS version when installing CM10 A3, decided to wipe all my data and try the install, now I'm stuck in neutral.
I guess the internet lied and gave me the wrong SBK the first time. Setup did work, and it wasn't RSD like I had thought.
I still would like to know what went wrong the first time through, and why it seemed like I wasn't able to overwrite the incorrect GAPPS version I had first installed. Once I saw my mistake I did use the correct version and nothing changed.

you state in the beginning that you are on 2.3.5. it is crazy that you were even able to flash cm10. it is made for 2.3.4 . and DZKs OP on cm10 is a bit sketchy in the wording and severly outdated.
there are a few things you need to do in order to get BSR working inside of A3 , as well as needing the GAPPS for 4.1.X and not 4.2.2 this is only cm10 , not 10.1 .
you need to SBF back to 2.3.4 (google EZsbf for droid x2) it is way easier than trying to use rsdlite for a "noob" , and then root. then follow the steps you completed to get where you are now, except use the right gapps.
THEN: (this is not in the OP for cm10 ) , perform THIS : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37698274&postcount=1573 in order to get the patched cm7 bootstrap working. DO NOT try to use the regular BSR .
i can try to help as i get back to my computer here and there, but hopefully others pitch in , as i dont have that much time. hope this helped.

I wasn't able to flash CM10. I was able to flash GAPPS 4.2.2, but then unable to flash GAPPS 4.1.x over that installation.
And is it really that outdated and sketchy? The version of CM10 I was trying to flash was made on January 11, 2013. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gingerbread 2.3.5 is almost 2 years old now, right? It's surprising that I'd have to go back to the previous version.
I may try out your suggestions later, but 8 hours of fiddling with my phone yesterday wore me out a little (a lot). Thanks!

the OP for cm10 hasnt really been updated since alpha 1 . so yeah it is outdated. alpha 2 had a non working wifi module that was never even mentioned in the OP and had to be figured out by the droid x2 community. alpha 3 had the working wifi back in, but did not have the proper Hijack.zip in place in the system files, whereas the old versions did. this was also never mentioned in the OP.
watch this video. it may help.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJdvyufvYp0
the dude who made this video also has DOZENS of how-to videos for the droid x2 on his channel. just search for it on youtube. (ex: how to sbf droid x2)
sbfing your phone to 2.3.4 , using EZSBF , shouldnt take more than 15 minutes.
2.3.5 re-introduced a lot of issues that we had with 2.3.4, so most devs base their roms around 2.3.4. in fact, there are really only two roms for 2.3.5 worth trying out, Eclipse, and gingerbread phone , 7 and they are both gingerbread. :crying:
if you read up on what needs to be done, the whole process of SBF, ROOT, and flash cm10 THEN gapps, should all take less than an hour, even for someone who is fairly inexperienced.
i wasnt trying to dog DZK's post for cm10. i was only stating that if you follow HIS instructions, it is confusing as hell.

the OP for cm10 hasnt really been updated since alpha 1 . so yeah it is outdated. alpha 2 had a non working wifi module that was never even mentioned in the OP and had to be figured out by the droid x2 community. alpha 3 had the working wifi back in, but did not have the proper Hijack.zip in place in the system files, whereas the old versions did. this was also never mentioned in the OP.
watch this video. it may help.
youtubelink
the dude who made this video also has DOZENS of how-to videos for the droid x2 on his channel. just search for it on youtube. (ex: how to sbf droid x2)
sbfing your phone to 2.3.4 , using EZSBF , shouldnt take more than 15 minutes.

Thanks for the link. I remember watching one of his videos yesterday for something, but apparently this was the one I needed! He does have another video on how to SBF back to 2.3.4, so I think I will just go for it right now.
Also yesterday it only took so long because I had to figure out what mess I had gotten myself into before I could figure out how to figure out what to do. This definitely looks like it shouldn't take more than an hour. :good:
I do have one quick question about backups. NANDroid is a full system backup, including the OS, right? And Titanium Backup is for apps and data? Therefore I should be able to restore all of my apps and data into Android 4.2.1 with Titanium, right? I at least know how to get back to 2.3.5 and restore my data if I can't restore it in 4.2.1, but I'd rather not have to go through this process again if I find out that Titanium can't restore everything.
(haha... I couldn't quote you because of the outside link and my 'xda noob' status )

a nandroid backs up the OS as well as all apps and data, but that only helps you if you are modding/messing with that specific rom. so yes, TB is the way to go for restoring apps across roms. glad to point you in the right direction! report back once youve made the jump. :fingers-crossed:

I used Tomsgt123's tutorials and they were fantastic. First I had to install the 2.3.4 SBK and then CM10 and Gapps. I'm currently running Titanium Backup and it's working flawlessly.
I did have one hiccup earlier though. I noticed that my contacts weren't backed up, and apparently I had disabled the online contact backup also. I was hoping that I could do a NANDroid restore, backup my contacts, and then go through with the CyanogenMod installation. But, the restore kept hanging and refused to finish. I tried 3 or 4 times, and on the last try I restored by section and it was the data section that caused the hang.
So, I'll have to rebuild my contacts list a little bit, but since SMS was backed up I'll at least get the people I care about . Cyanogen is pretty sleek and so far it's been noticeably faster than Gingerbread. I was constantly getting a low framerate just navigating my mainscreen before, and that's one of the reasons I was inspired to try out Jellybean or just anything newer. I can't make any claims about battery life yet since I haven't unplugged it, but other reviews said the battery can last more than twice as long which is fantastic.
I can't thank you enough, Lorenzo, for pointing me in the right direction. :highfive:

thats awesome. i loved the feeling when i first flashed a new rom on this phone. glad you got it figured out. make sure to thank Tomsgt for his videos as well . hes a cool dude and put a lot of time into it.
as for battery life, its kinda a bit rough on cm10. i wouldnt say twice as good. that would be too good to be true...lol . but if you limit your apps, it shouldnt be that much worse.
one thing, to improve performance, under settings, go to developer options, and near the bottom there is background processes. its set at standard limit by default. change it to three at most. this will make a noticeable improvement in performance, but will also need to be re-set at 3 at most if you ever reboot/power off.
glad i could help! :highfive:
