phone freezing up - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

I suddenly am having a problem where my homescreen gets stuck. (notification bar and live wallpaper still moves) but I can't launch an app or anything.
I have been using go launcher ex, but HTC Sense won't even load up.
I havent installed any new apps for a few days, the last app I started using was juice defender.
Anyways, this suddenly started happening last night, looking at OS monitor a process called "User Dictionary" is taking up all the CPU. I can kill it but it just comes back. Rebooting doesnt seem to solve it either.
If I try Sense, the Sense just takes up all the CPU
After about 30min last night the problem suddenly went away.
But just now it started happening again and all I did was send an email.

It might be your custom words from the (stock) keyboard.
How much data/phone storage is it taking up?
It is running on my phone, but is only using a total of 4.00KB, of which all 4KB is Data, and zero in Phone Storage. I am using Swype and not stock keyboard, so I may not have any custom words in that dictionary.
Have you tried force closing and/or clearing its cache?

I also use swype and I can't have too many custom words since I've only used the phone a week.
In apps, mine also says using 4k, zero phone storage
it says:
process: android.process.acore
Memory: 57M(30M) Thread: 30 Load: 82% (goes from 20-80%)
STime: 4 UTime:1645 Nice:0
User:app_273 Status:Sleep
So maybe this isnt the actual cause of the hang
I tried disable user dictionary so now it seems that go launcher is on top just as htc sense
When I look at User Dictionary or go launcher or HTC Sense while it is hanging, the log has alot of entries that say:
GC_CONCURRENT freed 6435K, 24% free
22224/28963K, paused 2ms+10ms
They arent all exactly the same
Seems like something is using too much memory and the garbage collection is going crazy
EDIT: ok I may have solved it or its a fluke. I un-installed any widgets I could think with, I started with friendster and twittster and the problem seemed to go away. That was my alternative to having no friendstream.

Wierd problem: home button reset itself and loses default launcher setting

Anyone experienced this weird problem before? After some use of about few min usage with 2 or more apps running, if the HOME button is pushed, it would reset the launcher and ask me to pick the default launcher again. I have ADW Launcher, Touchwiz, and LauncherPro. Everytime it does this by prompting "> Complete action using ...", I select ADW and checkmark "Use by default for this action." Some 10 - 20 min later, it loses the selection and ask me again even after reboot, uninstall, reinstall, same problem. I have stock froyo ROM, but rooted, with other kernels. I had latest supercurio kernel, it had same problem. I'm testing Overstock kernel, still same problem. The problem is not so bad, it is bearable as long as I don't press the HOME button. It just gets annoying and happened like 70% of the time of pushing that button. Anyone knows how to fix this? Danke.
Same problem here, but with go launcher. Im using darkys 9.5
Home switcher didnt solve it!

I had a similar issue recently. It was an app (MoboPlayer) causing it. Every time I would long press the home button it would lose the default setting. The dev recently fixed it, but I'd suggest having a look at what apps you recently installed and do some testing.

Wait so you are saying an app can cause this? I thought the apps are chrooted (sandboxed) so can't really affect each other except for OS affecting them. What's the best way to figure out what was recently installed? I have lots. If none, I guess I can try uninstall all the apps...and reinstall just a few to see if that holds up.

Just a idea..
-Have Titanium backup.
Backup the launchers(keep 1 there though you need 1), if you have to save the data, save the data.
uninstall it.
reboot.
restore it
that might work?
or erasing the data from the apps might work too

I thought the same thing, but it was definitely MoboPlayer causing it for me. It went away when I uninstalled, and returned immediately when I reinstalled it. I emailed the dev and he fixed it.
If you have Titanium Backup, under the Backup/Restore tab, you can tap the "ordered by" header to sort by install date.
When this happens the easy fix is to go task manager and shut all programs it will reset for you your settings np. This happens to me occasionally when my 4yr old plays with my phone, somehow she jacks it up and erases some the launchers like the phone, etc. So, I found this restores easily.
The problem was ADW.Launcher Free. Without it, things seem alot more stable.
I have a solution
I was struggling with this very issue. I thought it was due to partially corrupt system data. I installed another ROM, from scratch, rebuilt it to my specifications, then added a different launcher once again (different one this time). Rebooting resulted in the default lost and also all widgets showing with an "error loading widget" message in their place.
I finally figured out what was going on. It's because I had selected the option "move to SD card" as the default when installing applications. So, the launcher was on the SD card. Well, this creates a problem with timing, because the SD card is prepared a little later on in the boot process, after the required time to load the launcher. The result? Android draws up the default launcher. And for some reason, the older launcher ends up compromised with some of its default settings.
Once I moved my launcher app back to phone memory, the problem went away.

[Q] What gives? Where'd my widgets go? Comm Rom 1.2

Brief history...originally coming from stock froyo OTA...flashed CWM (3/30 fix)...rooted...nandroid BU...TiBU...GIANT leap of faith (virgin rom flash) to Comm Rom 1.2. I did not wipe data, but I did wipe cache and dalvik. I was running Launcher Pro and had a clock widget, along with Pandora and Winamp on my home screens. Things were running fairly smooth, but every now and then, some odd things would happen. On two occasions, when my battery was low (below 35% or so) and I plugged the phone in (AC charger), after a couple of hours, the battery would only show around 45% (basically much lower than it should have been after charging that long). As it turned out, it was "stuck" and a reboot fixed it. Sorry, I'm new to this, and I don't know how to grab logs yet, otherwise I would have, because I know that my ramblings won't do much to help the issues. Anywho...
Then I came to realize that I needed an app that was no longer installed (memo pad...which got killed in the debloating process), and I stumbled on the new release of EF and there were flashable stock apps (memo pad included) in that thread. Curiosity got the best of me and I flashed it...after which my clock and music widgets vanished (from the home screens and from the widget selection dialog). Then I flashed EF (3.5.1) but Launcher Pro didn't play nicely with it, and there were a few other odd things happening...so...I bit the bullet...wiped data, cache, dalvik, and reflashed Comm Rom 1.2 (via 1.0) and got everything (almost) back to normal. This time I did not use Launcher Pro, and I set up my home screens just like before. I then flashed the TSM Market app fix, and poof, gone again.
What gives?
p.s. after the full wipe, I haven't seen the battery thing happen yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.
**edit** today I decided to let the battery fully drain and do a full charge. after 4.5 hours on a car charger (big mistake in the first place), it was showing 37%. I rebooted and suddenly it was up to 48%. That was at 8 pm. Just checked it again, and it's up to 97%. Turned the phone on, and there were no user apps in the app drawer. Went to market (, to market...) and everything is there. Exited back to home and Google search widget was gone (but that one is easy to replace...just odd that it would disappear like that).
**edit** just checked (12:15 am)...fully charged. unplugged phone and screen went black and unresponsive. eventually (after several long presses of the power button) it rebooted. phone only powered on for 5 minutes (display only on briefly to check battery level) and already at 96%.
This is an interesting one...are they showing up in the manage applications file?
If you are referring to the "menu --> manage apps" thing, then yes they are there. The clock was an actual widget that I downloaded from the market called "digital clock widget"and the pandora and winamp ones are built into those primary apps.

Three cheers for self inflicted frustration. Solved my problem. So stupid me just came to realize that widgets don't like to run from the sd card. I was playing around with tibu and moved [all] my apps to the sd card (prior to the situation described in the OP). All was fine because they were still loaded in memory, but when I rebooted to flash those apps...bingo.
I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, but I feel really dumb now. As I suspected, the clock app doesn't even support being moved to the sd. I'll have to move the apps through app manager to avoid any [stupid] issues.
Once I finish working out my self inflicted problems, I'll get things how I want and bump up to 1.3 (unless 1.4 comes out).

Not sure if you have already completed the move of some of your apps back to internal memory (that would be some scary **** if I did LOL) but I saw that you had done TiBU before starting this - so I can presume you still have that...
There is a batch operation to move all user apps to SD card or to Internal memory. As it goes with all teh batch operations, you get to pick and choose what to move prior to starting the batch, which could save you some considerable time in doing so...
Yeah, I had batched them all to the sd card the first time. I batched them back to the phone, but now I have to check them one by one in app manager to see which ones natively support it.

Please help Galaxy s 2 ATT

OKay, so this is my first android phone, coming from an Iphone 4 and let me tell you im about 80% disappointed.
Here are some problems im having, im hoping that you can help me turn that 80 into a 20.
1. Apps just randomly run in the background: I'll close all but my live background, my task manager and my alarm clock and go to sleep. When I wake up almost EVERY SINGLE app I have is running in the background. Why? How do I stop this, the Iphone never did this, I feel this is a hard fail on androids part.
2. Many apps force close while im trying to use them: Ive tried stock rom, and serenity 8, same apps same issues. Its becoming a turn off to use the phone for any apps.
3. Multitasking: Is there any? MOST of the time when I switch apps and "multitask" its just like having the app open at the start page, I dont have to reload the app but its not where I last left it like the Iphone. Even on web pages I find if I switch out of the web and go to another app if I return to the web im back at my home page and I have to go to my history just to get back where I was. Is there a way for me to fix this?
4: Ram usage: when I turn my phone off, then on I see 150 in the used ram. This number raises even with out opening any apps. I kill all apps and close all running programs I see nothing running except services and it raises as high as 600 mb with 0 apps open and nothing running except a live background and the task manager. My iphone never had a memory leak, how do I fix this? 600 mb to do nothing is a bit excessive.
As a software developer im really confused as how Google tricked everyone that android was good. Perhaps Im just uninformed and that is why I am here. I am wondering why there would be all these problems right out of the box on an item that is what 4th 5th generation? These are problems that shouldnt be as frequent in 1st and 2nd generations. Any help would be wonderful thank you.
1. this question has been asked a million times. In short, the Android OS handles memory much different than you'd expect. An app will appear as running after you close it but it may not be. Android just keeps that memory allocated to that app in case you need to use it again. But if the OS needs that memory for something else, it will release it from that app and use it for something else.
2. what apps FC on you?
3. i'll leave this for someone else to explain because I dont use the browser much so I dont have much experience with that.
4. this goes along with my answer for #1. Android OS likes to have its memory allocated but it doesnt mean those apps are running.
I might be a little off on my explanation so I'll leave it to the experts to clarify but i'm pretty sure i'm fairly accurate.
1/4 - Not deficiencies, Android is designed that way. If an app is resident in memory, it is more readily accessible. Some badly written apps DO more than just sit there in the task list - but most are OK. Sitting in memory is not bad - holding a wakelock or showing up in your battery usage is.
2 - No clue - not having this problem here. I haven't seen an FC in a few weeks, and the last one was my own fault. What apps?
3) This depends on the app. However, usually the browser returns to wherever I last was when I use it. In fact I wish it were easier to "go home"...
3) Matter of using the right button. Close the app with the home button, and restart it where it left off. Back out of the app with the back button, and start over.
List off apps that FC on me Both stock and Serenity 8:
Alarm Clock Plus
Chase
email
Gmail
hootsuite
maps
market
netflix
qik
web
Also no matter how I work the web 60% of the time I start back at my home page.
Lastly to do anything on android it seems like a process, just to switch from one app to another I have to do this, then that, then this, now im on my other app... Iphones multitasking is button click im there. Is there a multitasking app that works kinda like iphones? I really like the tray that holds ALL my open apps. Im trying hard to like this phone and android but being able to customize and have widgets just does not seem like it is worth it. Unless there are some really big secrets im missing.
Thank you all for the answers as well!
i really dont know what to tell you about the FC's because none of those FC on me ... whether I was stock or not. That just doesnt sound right. If you're stock, it shouldn't be FC'ing at all. I can understand if you're rooted and running S8 or some other ROM. Maybe something happened during the flash but stock should be fine.
I'm also trying out the browser on my phone and if I load a random website, go home, open another app and go back to the browser, its still on the last page I viewed.

If you're swithing from app to app, and want to do it more quickly, hold the home button for a few seconds (pretty much anywhere, no need to go 'home' first). It will open up a list of the last 6 apps you've used. Pretty sure from the point you left off.
holding the home button does work pretty well, although sometimes it does not have the last couple apps I was using, mainly Go SMS pro. I am currently running S8 thought it was stable, guess i'll reflash and give this another go for a week, if not then its return to the IP and trade this back for the 4s. Thanks for the help!
Any suggestion on what rom to flash to?
Having THAT many apps FC on you is usually a sign that you did one of two things:
1) Forgot to wipe data/factory reset when installing a new ROM
2) Performed an improper Titanium Backup restore - restoring more than just "MISSING apps and data"

I'm running Serendipity 8.1 and do not have any problems with these apps from your list. You may need to re-flash.

any of them are good but I personally use UnNamed. You really should wipe your phone first. Thats probably why you have so many FC's. When you flash a new rom, make sure you do NOT restore system apps via Titanium Backup (if thats what you use).

To switch between running apps all you have to do is long press the home button - one press to see the last six open apps and your there.
Having the browser return to the home page every time just means you don't know what you are doing.
Being concerned about what is being held in ram its also a sign you don't know what you are doing. The memory chip where the ram resides, where you see a list of apps being held has to remain powered on all the time. Whether it is holding 250 MB of data, 500 MB of data or just 10 MB of data it will still be drawing the same amount of power. And just because an apps data is being held in ram does not necessarily mean it is running. Top see what us running you need to check cpu usage.
The only time to concerned about ram is if more than 85% is being used then you would start having problems. But this does not happen on our phones, and only would happen if you had something causing a major memory leak.
All of your force closes are related to you or your particular phone. I have maybe five fc's in a month and three of those happened while I was running cm7.

Lot of user error here. I'm on the stock ROM with root.
Switch apps quickly by holding home.
If you use the back button to exit an app then you truly are exiting the app. Use home if you want it to start running.
Don't worry about ram usage. This device has 1GB and Android manages it very well without you ever having to worry.
I never have force closes unless it's the developers issue. If you're running from backed up apps then you can expect to have FCs. Install from fresh if you try a new ROM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I think the main reason the op is having his browser reset most of the time is because the op is using some kind if task killer. This task killer is also probably the cause of a significant portion of the fc's being experienced.
There should be a forum rule against people who run task killers then complain about fc's, laggy apps, and problems with multitasking.
I mean it should be obvious running a "task killer" on a device designed specifically to multitask - it is so silly. Look at the two phrases side by side "task killer" "multitasking device" - can you see what I mean.

Just because you don't know how to use a device does not make the device a general fail. Let's put the blame where it belongs, on the guy who has no understanding on what is going on with the processes in the device and drawing conclusions on based on an obviously ignorant perception those observations.

Samsung has a tips and tricks page specifically for the AT&T GS2 that may show you some things you didn't know. One thing I didn't know was that you can take a screenshot with stock by pressing the power button and the home button at the same time. I also didn't know you can access the clipboard to show everything you "copied" from text fields.

As far as the OP's issues, I have all of those apps except for chase and hootsuite installed on stock and I don't FC at all. For the browser concerns, you may just be opening a new window each time you run the browser from the app icon. Try zooming all the way out of the page and then pinch to zoom out once more and it will show you the windows you have open, or you can press the menu key and select windows. The icon for "windows" in the menu will have a number on it if you have more than one open.

[Q] Samsung TouchWiz home keeps getting killed (not crashing)

I have an international Samsung Galaxy S3 from Telcel in Mexico. As of lately, I've been seeing the TouchWiz home's process stopping a lot: when I press the Home button, it takes about 5 seconds for the currently running app to close, then the home screen shows up and TouchWiz begins its startup for about 10 seconds.
Up until a few months ago I noticed this usually happened when I had a large, heavy app open, like Google Chrome or Waze -- meaning that the TouchWiz home was automatically killed by Android. However, as of lately it's been happening about half the times I press the Home button. Since I purchased this phone to run my 190 installed apps without any trouble, I would like to know if it could be possible to somehow prevent this from happening, as in something that prevents Android from killing TouchWiz or that forces it to always remain running.
Update: I just tried setting my memory minimums with Autokiller to a ridiculously low value (12 MB for hidden, 15 MB for content providers, 18 MB for empty apps). It didn't work, Android keeps killing my TouchWiz home.
is s-voice stopped in it's settings? i.e., open via home key should be unchecked.
About an hour ago I disabled S Voice on home button double press. So far it seems good, though I'd like to wait one more day to declare it solved.
Consider using greenify, keeps ram clean of unused apps. This way android is less likely to kill touchwiz.

it doesn't get solved totally. it happens randomly though not frequently due to heavy ram usages and many reasons. closing background processes through built in task manager or any 3rd party apps might help you. :good:
Indeed it happened today when I loaded like 30 tabs on Opera Mobile Classic. That's fine though, it's reasonable that Android's autokill would rather kill TouchWiz instead of Opera, and at least it happens sporadically and due to a good reason instead of randomly and all the goddamn time. I'll still wait a bit before declaring this solved.
hit thanks if i help you.

How can I prevent apps from reloading everytime I come back to them after minimizing?

This is driving me crazy. It's impossible to multi task. I'm on uber. I get a text message, read it, get back to Uber and now it's loading from scratch in the middle of my trip. Go to my browser to complete the post i was typing but now it's reloading, and it's cleared my message and now I have to type it all over again. Go back to Google maps and I have to re-search the place and the direction. On Skype, go to contacts to retrieve a number but now it's dropped my call. It's extremely frustrating.
My phone is Huawei 2017 MYA L22. Its on Android 6.0. 2GB RAM. The reason I post here and not my phone's forum is because no one ever replies on that forum.
I've gone through all the battery optimization options on the phone but it hasn't solved the problem. I've also gone through the development option. I have a phone with 1GB RAM, although, really slow, it will never kill or reload apps, everything is right where I left it. With this phone I almost never reach 1GB of usage and it acts like I'm using everything it's got.
It's not rooted (would love to root it but that's another problem. Can't find the method to).
UPDATE: Rooted it (FINALLY!) and uninstalled all the bloatware, as well as experimenting with freezing Phone Manager and Mobile Genie...same sh*t! Nothing changed. Still killing apps! Agh!
Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!
Anyone?
