Yeah as long as its a zip file. Tar will be flashed through Odin. Img through adb. Backups don't translate well between some recoveries though, just a heads up.

Need your advise on how to remove TWRP?
I was on CWM and changed to TWRP.
Now I want CWM back but I can't boot into it.

Glad you managed to get back. By the way, you can also go flash a new recovery by flashing it through the custom recovery you already have.
E.g. Flash CWM (ZIP) via TWRP.
Once installed should I delete my original ROM manager (cwm) from Google play?
Thanks

You have already asked this question in the sudden death thread and got an in depth answer.
Here, I've copied and pasted it again for you

Reply:
CWM is a recovery. PhilZ is a recovery that's based on CWM. So it's capable of pretty much everything CWM is, and more. Hence your backups should be restored without any trouble, as long as the CWM version PhilZ is based on can do it. You have one /recovery partition. You either install CWM or PhilZ or TWRP or whatevertheeff else (this is in response to "Do I still need CWM?").
PS: Please clean up your posts, you're almost polluting the thread!
Why are you asking it again? And not only that but making a new thread for it!
Surely the best place to ask is actually in the PhilZ recovery thread.........once.

I have a noob question. I unlocked/rooted my phone using the CASUAL method and it put twrp recovery on there. Is it possible to switch that to clockwork mod that I am more familiar with and if so, how do I do it?
Thanks in advance.
What I've been reading on here twrp works best...

Ah ok. From the 1-2 times I have used it it seemed fairly straight forward. I just know for things like CM10 rom it says install cwmod first then flash the rom. Is it possible to flash cm10 from twrp?

Yes it is. Just use goomanager to update it TWRP to the latest. Also I guess you could just use ROM manager to install CWM, but as stated TWRP seems to be the best for the note

Yep, you can flash it with TWRP, just make sure you are running the latest version.

I've tried using Odin to install CVM 6.0.4 in order to overwrite the old one but it didn't work well

There are zip files for newer recoveries.. My personal favorite is Phil's touch... Just download the file and flash it through your current recovery... And then reboot recovery...

Does that mean that i need to be rooted ?? because i'm not and i'm not intending to do it now
no need for root. download new recovery as an zip (Philz is an good choice, find his tread here on xda) and reboot into recovery. Flash new recovery zip just like any other zip. Reboot and voila... all done
