I recently just tried to restore one of my backups of a different rom and got an MD5 mismatch error. I understand that that can come from errors during a download of a rom but why would I get that error now? Could it be because I renamed the file after it was backed up? Thanks in advance....

If your file name has spaces in it, it may cause the MD5 mismatch error.
Or the backup was moved to a pc then moved back to the phone. Windows adds a few bytes to a file so the sum is a little different.

I hate windows....it bites! I mean ":cyclops:bytes"
I did it all on my phone using a file manager. So if I change the name to something without spaces it should be fine?

I had the same problem the other day - a known good backup wouldn't install. After much searching and asking I ended up considering the backup scrapped and moved on. Then the next day I tried again and it worked fine.
Do you have another backup?

I have had this issue since I like to store my older nandroids on my Win 7 PC. Do you know of any way to identify or remove the extra bytes? It would have to be after the file is transferred back to the Note I imagine.
Your should try renaming your file.

Hi
if you did your backup using CWM and you renamed it after doing the backup I suggest you use "." instead of spaces; example if you rename it "CM9 ROM" try "CM9.ROM" or if you backup your stock rom and rename it "stock android rom" tried "stock.android.rom"

Ok well I did that and I thought it would fix the problem but now I keep getting this error message in my recovery. Got it when I tried to reflash the recovery that I properly named and then again when I tried to flash on PA's 4.1 CM10. What in the heck does this mean??

I think that means that your version of CWM is not compatible with the zip you're trying to flash.

Aw man. Well I just had the newest version but reverted back to 5.5.0.4 because it game me a lot of issues. Strange but I also got the same error when I tried to restore from that one backup.

I could be wrong, I don't know for sure.
But, you could see what recovery other people are using in the ROM thread.
I copy my backups from SD to computer and back and have run into this issue. I followed the instructions in this link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114 and it fixed the MD5 mismatch issue. I guess these commands "clean" the backup of whatever windows does to it when copied. Worked like a charm! Also, I always change my backup names and am sure not to leave spaces. This works even if the name is not what CWR generated.

So i restored back to stock blur rom cuz i was feeling all nostalgic and to get a few TB backups. Well when i attempted to restore back to CM9 i kept getting "MD5 Mismatch!" errors. Well it turns out I had left spaces in that and a few other renamed backup folders which apparently is a no-no. Luckily i was able to restore back to another backup, rename the folders without spaces via USB and was able to restore CM9 backups. Just thought this may help others. You might want to check your backup file folder names and get rid of the spaces.
Well I've never thought of renaming then but either way this is good to know for future reference

Hm that's weird.. I kept name same and just added at end _cm9 or whatever ROM for most but a few I completely changed file name using underscores with no issues and trust me my nandroids get used more than they should lol

Hey there guys I came across this useful tool today when I was poking around the ARC section it lets you make a nandroid without having to boot into recovery. This isnt my work Im simply passing it on so I hope he doesnt care too much about me posting this here.

Nandroid backups are usually performed in recovery mode. This means you would have to turn off your phone and reboot in recovery mode, which wastes a whole lot of time rebooting and a lot more time offline. For me, this has been a killer as I do regular nandroid backups. Having to reboot in recovery and finding missed calls, sms from my wife and friends is totally not accepatable for me. So, I set to develop an online nandroid backup tool which can do nandroid backups without switching off my phone.
Today, I am releasing it to public, as it may serve good for some others too. This tool is specifically for Xperia phones, but should work with any model of android phones.
This tool backups /system , /data , /cache & .android_secure partiotions to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup directory. The date format used for folder name is the same used by CWM itself and nandroid backups created with this tool can safely be restored using CWM. If you would want to have a custom name for backup folder, pass an argument with the name to the script and it will use the name.
Feedback (especially ideas to improve) are most welcome.
Requirements
1. Rooted android phone
2. A terminal emulator installed on phone
3. Busybox
4. A working CWM based recovery installed
5. Some patience
Installation
1. Download and copy zip file to SD card
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Choose install zip from SD card, select zip and flash .
4. Reboot!
Usage
1. Open terminal emulator
2. Type su to obtain root
3. Type onandroid
4. Wait and watch

Ha ha ha! I knew it was bound to happen. Its pretty straight forward and really low risk I doubt anything could be messed up even if you tried but yea have fun! Hopefully it is useful to some out there

When I tried to run this, it says "Checking for required tools" followed by "mkyaffs2image not found in path"
I tried uninstalling/reinstalling busybox and installing it to /system/bin and not xbin. This time it sort of ran but I got a bunch of errors and no backup.
Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Isn't this inherently flawed since files on the rom are still being used and written while the backup is taking place? Neat idea though, don't get me wrong

Fair enough. Hopefully people follow the advice of not doing anything during the backup, so they aren't disappointed when the changes don't get backed up

I tried to do a restore from the online nandroid backup I made and even though it said "restore complete" my SD-ext(4) partition would not load its shortcuts and widgets. The funny part is link2sd didn't even detect any SD-ext as if it wasn't backed up. I thought it said that it backed up SD-ext during online backup, but not sure. I'm wondering if it might help to factory restore before restoring backup. I may try that to see and I'll report back if noone reports similar problem.
Edit**During backup I was not doing anything else with phone other then watching the amazing online backup screen. Also I tried to "re-create mount scripts" but never got option from link2sd even after reboot.

This tool (prior to v3) does not backup sd-ext partition. In the first post, you can see what the tool backups.
PS: If you can send me a previous backup of your sd-ext, I can work on adding sd-ext backup support to the script.

Here it is, the same error as before. This is with the latest 2.0 version. I'm running stock 2.3.4 rooted. Busybox is1.94 full.

Hi, I did a backup using cwm before flashing jelly bean onto my Galaxy S3. Now I'm tryin to restore my backup but its showing md5 mismatch. These are the files I have: boot.img, data.ext4.tar, recovery.img and system.ext4.tar. I changed the name of the backup file but left no spaces in between.. Can anyone help please.

Anyone please...Easiest solution
Which file is corrupted? If the data files is intact, you could try manually downloading the rom you had installed before. After flashing it, do a selective restore of the data partition. That should get you back to your old system.

Hi this is my first post on xda so bear with my n00biness.
I've flashed Entropy's ClockworkMod and a couple of ics roms and it was really nice and getting better every new release. However, my occasional need for my camera and flash player brought me to do a restore back to stock rom (which I backed up on cwm).
Unfortunately, when cwm checks its md5 sum it ends up with an error saying there's a mismatch.
Is there a problem with my version of cwm? Or would I have to wipe my data beforehand?

well what i do when i flash back my recovery i factory reset and then clear cache and wipe dalvik cache then i flash my recovery
Did you rename the backup? Sometimes this causes CWM to mess up. If you did rename it then name it something like 'stock' and try restoring again

Well now this smart guy decided to see if he has the md5 file inside the recovery file, and, pretty surprisingly, there were no nandroid file except for one of my newer backups. (But that apparently doesn't have the md5 file included in that nandroid file either )
Oh well. Renaming the backup won't bring back the file, will it? are all md5's unique per backup? And, just making sure, there needs to be a nandroid file in the recovery folder, right...?

umm i think they are different and yes there has to be a nandroid file in the backup folder or else if you screw up the backup wont help either way
create an empty text file and name it nandroid.md5 in the backup folder
then use my script which is located in sig
I have a similar issue with not being able to locate the backups in a folder. Not in cwm folder where they should be. I went through every file I could think of to locate with no prevail, but yet in recovery - there they are! Is this because the cwm recovery is pushed in with the kernel and not through rom manager? Also, has anybody messed around with selecting a different device in rom manager because galaxy player is not listed?

I have a Rooted VZW GN2 running Scott's CleanROM with the Perseus kernel with TWRP as the recovery tool. I screwed up royally a few days ago and bricked my phone (dicking around with the Google Wallet mod, which failed I might add) but was able to fix it and get all my settings back the right way. Well given that it took nearly 3 days, I'd like to save a backup of everything how it is.
How do I accomplish this task? I read on xda that a lot of people use "nandroid" so I downloaded it, did the backup using the "online version" that lets you do a nandroid backup while the phone is running (not in Recovery mode) and it saved the copy to a "clockworkmod" folder. Now I know that clockwork recovery is an option besides TWRP, but since I have TWRP does it make this backup useless? Or can I do a full TWRP backup (everything selected) and will it serve the exact same purpose?

OK. First i would ALWAYS backup via recovery. So go in TWRP and back it up. However you could try to restore it and if it didn't work it would say MD5 mismatch.

1. Okay so are you saying that a full TWRP backup (all options selected) = nandroid backup?
2. Does this mean that restoring the back-up TWRP file would restore everything as it is now (down to the last detail) or what could I expect of a restore?

Yes. Every last detail would he saved. All save games and even draft messaging... The whole lot. I believe it is correct as they both output the same back up. However i prefer CWM

Thank you! Well now I'm trying to save my files to my Dropbox but Dropbox doesn't let me upload the entire folder for the Backup. If I use RootExplorer and convert it to a zip, would that be okay? Will TWRP allow a zip for restoring or would I have to do an extraction first?

TWRP will make its own back up and save it in a selected folder. Are you talking about uploading the backup already made from TWRP

I'd just like to be efficient with what memory I do have at the moment. I know that TWRP saves the file in its own folder, but it's actually a large collection of files. My plan was to zip them and upload the zip file to Dropbox and delete the "on-phone" copies. Then if worst came to worst, I would just download the zip back on there via my USB cable (I could extract if it necessary) and then I'd restore it. I just want to know if that would work and whether or not TWRP would be able to use a .ZIP file or if it would need all of the files individually.

I'm confused, isn't that what I've been saying the last several posts? What I plan on doing is zipping up my TWRP files, DropBoxing them, and if I need them I'll just hardload them onto my SD card (extracted into the folder or as a zip file depending on what TWRP needs) and then I'd restore that way.

Just make sure to not compress the zip. Not sure that TWRP will be able to restore a compressed backup (probably won't).

I understand you're concerned about saving as much memory as you can. This is something the rest of us face as well, but quit trying to cut corners and simply do a backup the way you're supposed to and move on with your life instead of trying to invent a shortcut. The tried and true methods used within these forums have worked for years the way they're supposed to.
Either use CWM or TWRP to make your backup. I always keep one active backup and delete older ones. It's easy and almost impossible to screw up.
After I soft bricked my device, I found myself making several types of backups after reading on the forums many different ways of backing up. It appears that my efforts are superfluous and that only one backup is necessary. For this reason, I was trying to figure out the best way to store the backup files. I was zipping the file not to save space as much as I was to have only one file to export to Dropbox, as Dropbox only allows files to be imported instead of entire backup folders.
