Can you root the S3 w/o a computer? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought an S3 on my vacation to another country and now I'm back in Sweden again, though very far from home (roughly 370 miles) and so I was wondering if it's possible to root the galaxy S3 without a computer nearby. I noticed Mobile Odin requires root to operate so it's out of the question.

No not yet. Although I did it on the s2.
U need cwm recovery signed.zip
Which doesn't exist as yet

So it would be possible if someone took the three required root files (superuser, su and possibly busybox), packed them in a flashable zip, it would work?

(Granted, usually I'd think such a task impossible as private keys are meant to be kept safe, but I'm curious as to how the GS2 got a signed zip)

Maybe individual signing would work with say zipsigner?

I'm sure this would have been tried. I tried to find a way. But there isn't one. Unless someone from Samsung does it

The thing is, though, unless Samsung's security on the recovery is lax and you can infact do this, you can't just take a ZIP and sign it with any key; it has to be with one that Samsung approves of, and if Samsung are doing their job well then these keys aren't available for everybody and anybody to use.
If you want to try, http://androidsu.com/superuser/ has signed ZIPs that probably contain a random key (like one you'd get with zipsigner) or you could try the signed CWM recoveries for the GS2 (which, IMO, seems just as unlikely to work)

Looks like I'll wait until I'm home at my PC, which I should be this Friday.

Why on earth would they remove that? That's so stupid. That's a killer feature! I was really looking forward to making ugly faces to my tablet

If face unlock is part of google apps, couldn't we just pull it off of a ICS phone and push the face unlock app via adb?
Seriously? No face unlock?!

Booooo, that's some BS (not that I'm doubting it's true, but BS in the sense that we should have it). It's just an app with very little requirements (camera?). I thought the purpose of a Nexus was to showcase the features of the software, not necessarily sell the phone, but the OS. At least given our current history (48hrs to get Asus to agree to unlock the bootloader, root obtained before most people got their tablet) I don't imagine it will be too long til we get it ported over somehow

just pulled the facelock.apk from my GNexus and tried to install it, and it says:
"Replace Application?
This is a system application. Do you still want to replace it?
All Previous user data will be removed."

I posted this in the other thread about Face Unlock, I was looking thru the apps disabling what I could in the settings and I see that Face Unlock is in there it lets you force close it and disable it. Its version 4.0.3-239410 and says its 64KB not sure if thats the full app or maybe something that will get added in later. Maybe we just need to find a way to enable it?

This is such BS... I was really looking forward to this feature. Hope our magical devs will be able to enable it soon, or alternatively I hope ASUS enables it in another OTA very soon. This is our first iteration of ICS afterall, I'm sure there are still plenty of things that need to be ironed out or added.

Its not stock on the Sensation. You have to have flashed a rom that included it, which might be what we have to do with the prime.

Are you willing to unlock your Prime and void the waranty? If yes then you can install CWM. If not, you have to wait for someone to find an exploit that allows root.

His Prime is already unlocked. The issue is that he cannot install CWM because:
A) No root access for ROM manager inside working OS!
B) No access to using fastboot as this is his only computer!
If you can get to london next week, I will be more than happy to meet up and help you out dude.
might take you up on that as i fooked a flash on my galaxy s now and cant get to the recovery screen now.. lol. where in london are you?

I know that he is unlocked from a previous thread.
I'm in Brockley in south London however, I spend time at my University in North London, near the Emirates Stadium.
PM me if you want to meet up, and hopefully we can get you back up and running.
ok, bit of an update. my galaxy i9000 crashed the other day. managed to get into local library and flash through odin in there and get it working again but the machine is locked down and no command prompt available so unable to push cwm onto my prime. so question, is there a method for doing this without command prompt or can some clever bod write an executable or batch file that will do this for me on a restricted local library machine.. cheers

S-Voice on ICS (updated 5/30)

EDIT EDIT EDIT: reopened to public, updated. NEED ROOT
article: http://www.droiddog.com/android-blo...n-ics/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
HOW DO YOU INSTALL?
1. Download ZIP on link below(Extract on your desktop). If you download to phone directly, you still need to extract to a normal folder.
2. Contained within is 2 files.(voicetalk.apk & libsvoxtts.so)
3. Place voicetalk.apk in system/app with "Root Explorer" or like(Use Mount R/W and set permissions by holding voicetalk.apk to see sub-menu). Make sure to make permissions as "rw-r--r--".
4. Now place libsvoxtts.so on /system/lib.
5. Reboot *****NO NEED TO CHANGE build.prop such as with others.
6. ENJOY, then ask funny questions to it.

Works fine on my Evo3D. Nothing impressive, but it does work.
Well it did work till Samsung heard of everyone using their app before the GS3 even released and made some changes so that it now only works on the GS3. I believe you can edit build.prop and get it to work, but honestly not even worth the trouble until we get an updated version that is more capable...

its really no hassle at all, OP edited w/ details. change 2 things, back up is made automatically, reboot, done. if there are issues, delete the new build.prop, reboot.
and "more capable" of...? I would only trust S-Voice/Siri with so many things before they became too important to trust them to do
Someone with a pre-ordered LTEvo report if thus works on the phone

Works just fine on my pre-ordered rooted LTEvo. The reason why its giving you guys the "Network Error" is because the initial ripped version of this app was not signed. There is a Signed .Apk for this app somewhere in the forums which would work "flawlessly". If incase its still messing up then fixing the permissions should do it.

Until it gets refined I would say its just something to mess around and show off if an Apple fanboy comes along and still tries to showoff siri. I think the woodchuck test would be enough to prove them inferior, YouTube it if u aren't familiar

[Q] Can't update to Jelly Bean :(

Okay so for starters, my device's launcher is unlocked. I knew what this meant when I bought it, but the update process seemed simple enough especially because asus had step-by-step guides and put the files out just a few days after the update launches (like they did for Jelly Bean just recently).
But unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get it to work :-/ I've downloaded the zip folder and put the contents into the internal storage, checked for updates, rebooted, nothing though. Additionally I put the files on an SD card and it didn't do anything either.
How can I update my tablet? Pleaseeee any help would be greatly appreciated!
edit: this is the US sku

I recommend watching some how to videos. The update process won't work the typical way as you need to boot into recovery to flash it. I recommend a couple things.
Read up/watch videos on how to flash CWM or TWRP
Watch ab couple videos on how the flashing process works.
