Hello -
I have browsed through countless threads and obviously overlooking something for a successful root.
I was able to root using option #3 in the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894. All went without issue and I see the SuperUser application on the phone.
However, I cannot get into Clockwork. Holding the power buttons and power button only takes me in the typical Android reset menu.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You don't have rom manager installed hopefully. If not, you simply power your phone off , hold down volume up down and power until it reboots KEEP holding it it may flash the boot logo more than once then it should take you into clock work mod recovery. Also keep in mind you need a custom kernel to have clockwork mod recovery installed, as our kernels have recovery built in.

Thanks for the assistance. No --- I do not have ROM Manager installed. The button sequence only takes me into the typical Android menu that has four options. Going from memory: Reboot, apply update.zip, factory reset, clear cache. It's not the Clockwork menu...I'm familiar with it.
I guess that means that the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 only roots the phone and I need to apply a custom kernel. If so, do I have to find a custom kernel and apply through ODIN since I cannot flash through Clockwork? If so, can you give me a link on how to do this?
Thanks.

You just installed the stock kernel with stock 3e recovery. You now need to install a custom kernel. Go to this thread, which is the full directions for rooting and installing a ClockworkMod Recovery enabled kernel.
Also since you're rooted, you can flash kernels with mobile Odin if ya want, it's on the Android market. Is free to flash roms gotta pay for it to flash kernels and stuff but it's well worth it in my opinion.

This. It's definitely the best way.
Thanks to everyone. I was missing the step of flashing a kernel with Clockwork mod. I did purchase mobile ODIN Pro and now able to access the menu to flash. I was used to the 1-click one stop shop utility under the Galaxy Nexus.

Is there a way to currently root your sgs2 all from your phone? (Without a PC)
For example; Rooting +CWM>install kernel+ new rom/baseband
phone for starting base kk6/2.3.6
Just wondering. I wanted to make a powerpoint about how to root android phones, but I think each phone is so specific that a general method may not be applicable?
Also that most phones need to be flashed via PC for starters? (yes/no?)
I figured generally speaking:
1: Look for your phones model number, android version and baseband,
2: download and flash correct rom (renaming the file if necesary)
3: with phone rooted install ??? (rom/kernel/new bb/cwm or whatever)
I don't know if I can do this as a "general" powerpoint for android, but I can do it specifically for SGS2; however, not everyone has an SGS2
ideas?
uh download rom manager to install cmw and just flash a rooted rom ?
all downloaded from your phone ....
I'm 99% sure that cmw needs a rooted phone to even install from rom manager but then again it actually might not ..

Please read the OP. How is rom manager working with ICS relevant to this if he's starting from KK6 GB?
Maybe mobile Odin can work but idk if you can use that without root already on the phone. I had to root mind from download mode using a pc with Odin.
Seems like a cool idea to explore.

When I use rom manager to nandroid it has always frozen upon turning off. Many other serious fails too. I only use it to rename my backups done from recovery mode. Otherwise it's just wasting space on my phone

Mobile Odin requires root.
AFAIK there's no current way to root an SGS2 without a PC. I found SuperOneClick to work just fine, doesn't require you to flash using Odin, but it does take some patience and a few tries, and a PC of course.
I could be wrong of course, please correct me if I am.
I read you can run android sdk/adb from usb stick. Just need the "final" folders installed. Any tips?
There's a method to root + install new kernel from adb cmds

I never do backups unless fresh power off then booting recovery , no rom manager ..
i just was suggesting possibly with it installed cwm can install without a pc.
the only caveat was if root access required to install it as I don't remember and can't think of any way rooting is possible without a pc EXCEPT installing a pre-rooted rom
*which is not possible on sgs2 with standard sammy recovery correct

uhhhh....
COMPLETELY different phones, COMPLETELY different hardware. NO....you cannot use rom manager for the i777 unless you are working solely with AOSP builds....in which case you would ALREADY have a CWM kernel
this has been the case on all samsung galaxy s line except the skyrocket/t989. there is no doubt that it simply DOESNT work from stock. its not speculation, its fact.
things are different over here dude. the i777 is pretty much nothing like the i727 aside from sharing a name and touchwiz....

Download Recovery
*usual disclaimer that I am not responsible for you bricking your phone*
To install
1. Download file to your computer
2. In command line, navigate to the folder you have the recovery
3. Reboot phone into fastboot
4. "fastboot flash recovery recovery-CWM-6.0.0.0-ruby.img"
5. "fastboot reboot"
6. Reboot Phone into recovery as normal
Anyone test it as yet other than you? Would be cool to see this in action, good post, many of those who wanted CWM will love you for it, lol.
As far as I could tel I was the first to build a ruby version. I just pulled the 5.0.2.8 CWM and used that as a base and had it build a touch version. I tried getting it to use the stock recovery but the only one I could find was from the all-in-one toolkit and it built, but the recovery had trouble mounting points so I didn't upload it here.
I've always been a fan of CWM but that's prolly mostly because that's what I familiar with. I've used it since my G1.
So it can flash kernels???
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
It was built off of 5.0.2.8 so I would have to guess that you would have to be S-OFF to flash kernels. I am S-OFF and am the only one I know of running it.
Why is it only able to flash ics roms?

This is based off of Koush's new 6.0 CWM. It has incremental backups instead of the doing the entire ROM each time. That is the biggest advantage to me.

FINALLY, A FRICKING RECOVERY THAT JUST WORKS.
Jesus, I tried every recovery I could find.
I'm not mentally impaired, so I do understand (and preffer) to use fastboot, and all other recoveries either required a download of an app to do the work for you or they just plain wouldn't boot (I'm looking at you, EXT4 touch binary...)
Plus it's well documented and it's a real developer friendly recovery, not so user oriented. I love it.

or you can just flash the 4EXT recovery image from my toolkit. That is another way. 4EXT wants the app installed so it can tell you about updates and let it update by itself.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232
Don't ever use ROM manager. Ever.
Read the stuff linked in the sticky at the top of this forum. And I mean read *all links*. They'll show you how to mod your phone safely and teach you the ins and outs of modding an SGH-I777, and keep you from bricking your device. Once you've read everything (and please read carefully! reading more than once may help), if you don't fully understand anything after that feel free to ask questions.
Stop making so many threads and read around

I know it's not always the fastest option, but searching for an answer that you're not sure of really is the best way to learn. The more familiar you become with the search tool and which terms you need to find your answers, the easier it'll be for you here. Not trying to be a **** at all, just letting you know. Rom Manager had been known for a long while now as being buggy and unstable for our device. Not saying it doesn't work for other devices extremely well, but our kernels come packaged with CWM, which is different from most phones, as you can normal flash a recovery separately from the kernel.

I made the ROM Manager mistake
I didn't see the warnings about using ROM Manager until it was too late.
Now here's the weird thing that happens (big problem!). As soon as I read the warning, I uninstalled ROM Manager and flashed a new kernel and did a factory reset. This should have wiped ROM Manager from my SG2, but it didn't. When I go into CWM Recovery mode, the ROM Manager icon (the circular arrow with the hat) appears at the center of the screen. When I try to execute a command in CWM, whether Wipe data or Install from SDcard, the screen goes black except for that icon. Nothing happens. The only way to reboot is to pop the battery. The phone works fine with Gingerbread and the phone is rooted, but I want to be able to flash an ICS ROM from xda.
Somehow, some aspects of ROM Manager remain on my phone.
Any ideas on how to get rid of it?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the support. Yes, it is a learning process that requires patience and some diligence.
I just flashed Serendipity ICS, so I'm a happy guy!
So I was on the latest MIUI, and flashed Dream Kernel. That went fine, I rebooted, then tried to flash CM 9.0.1 via CWM, and the phone shut off, but never booted back up. Now it won't boot at all, in any mode. It doesn't respond when I put it on the charger either. The screen dimly flashes occasionally if it's getting power from the charger or the battery.
Any ideas? :x
Have you tried plugging the phone into the charger without the battery, then put the battery in a bit later?
If this makes boo sense.... It's the lime a Rita telling.

check the dev section for all of whatever you want to flash with CWM
Mmk, I'm back on stock and everything is gravy, thanks for the help guys. I'm going to try and flash AOKP, but I'm having trouble finding a good download for CWM. Anyone have one? I just want a CWM that works correctly. Not trusting ROM manager anymore.

I appreciate your positive attitude and that this whole thread u have been nice and respectful. So ill fill ya in bud our phones aren't like most. Our kernels come with the recovery built into it. (CWM). So whenever u flash a kernel, you're also flashing a recovery too.

Before I try rooting my phone, wanted to double check couple of information.
I have a verizon galaxy note 2.
I updated the patch that came out in May when it asked me to update OTA.
I have been reading up on this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066.
Am I ok running VZW-Gnote2-CASUAL-NoYouVerizon-CASUAL-R638b-Nightly.jar? I know there are different versions, but do not know if it will work with the latest update from Verizon that I have.
Thank you~

As long as you are on the VRAMC3 update it should work.

Yes, the "no you, Verizon" exploit is the latest and will work on all stock builds.
I'm on the team win recovery project. What do I do next?
Is there a guide to optimize my phone?

Well at least now you have root so you can enable neat features in some apps. Of course you can flash roms. See the developer sections and read up on which you may want to flash.
Ridin' a Note 2 blast
So rooting is basically just getting to that team win recovery project screen to do other things? Do I run Cause each time I want to install new roms?
Flash ROM zips from Recovery....

To get into recovery, shut down, then press your power/home/volume up buttons all at the same time, then wait, it should boot into team win recovery. Then you can install goodies on your phone.
I have successfully rooted my device and installed a rom. For some reason, when I press the down volume, home button, and the power button, it goes into odin mode, downloading do not turn off target, and stays on that screen for a while. (This has occurred about 4 times even after pulling battery out and doing it again.)
How long do you stay on that screen for usually?

To boot into recovery it is Vol Up, Home, and Power from a powered off phone. Vol down, Home, and Power will put you into Odin.

You don't flash roms from odin. You flash roms from TWRP (team win recovery).

Honestly if you don't know you don't flash ANYTHING in Odin unless you have to restore to stock then you need to go to the Development section and read droidstyles sticky before you soft brick your phone. You need to have a better understanding of the process before you jump in the deep end.
If you still don't understand how to flash Roms after reading droidstyles guide then watch some YouTube videos on how to flash Roms, DO NOT download any of the Roms those people in the videos are flashing unless they are made for the Verizon Note 2. Never ever flash something for another phone unless you want a potential brick, the only other phones Roms we can flash are the N7105 (LTE version of the international Note 2), the AT&T Note 2, and the T-Mobile Note 2 and even then you can only flash their Touchwiz Roms with a conversion mod. It will be best if the only Roms you flash, until you understand everything, are ones you get from the Verizon Note 2 Development and Original Development sections on XDA.

No you don't have to run Casual again. That's done and won once you see TWRP. You flash (install) roms from TWRP ("recovery"). I recommend that you search "how to flash a rom using TWRP" on You Tube. Then I would read the TWRP thread in one of the xda dev sections and or do google/bing search on TWRP. And starting out at first I would only flash roms from the xda Verizon GN2 dev section. I would forget about roms you hear about elsewhere until you are comfortable with TWRP and the xda dev section roms after 2-3 months. The point being to avoid soft or even hard bricking your wonderful device. Take your time, let the knowledge soak in because the rom world will still be there when you're ready. Good luck.
