Hello there. As you will notice, I am new to this forum. I own the Xperia U (ST25i) handset, and currently run the .564 firmware. Unfortunately for me and multiple others, my bootloader is locked, and my phone is also SIM locked to Three UK. Now, I am aware that for users with an Xperia S, there is a method to obtain root access through downgrading to Gingerbread, then running a script of some sort and updating to ICS. But, as there is not an ICS update for the Xperia U as of yet, this method does not work. But I'm thinking; surely if the exploit RUNS in gingerbread, it could get access to system files and such, without the need of ICS? My understanding is slim, granted. But I'm familiar with rooting, ADB commands and the Android file structure.
I would like for anybody with knowledge to help in this, as it could potentially be a breakthrough in rooting all NXT Xperia devices without losing warranty.
Many thanks,
-Pokoby
UPDATE
Having modified the .bat files and testing both the original and the modified versions of them, I can confirm they do not work. The problem lies in gaining root shell access. ADB shell always comes up with a $, rather than a #. This means there is no access to any of the files in /system/, /data/ or any derivatives. Unfortunately, that is where all of the files used to root are kept. I would love to work at a way around, and will help in any way I can.
-Pokoby
I have a xperia U with LB also. I´m not a developer but it would be great if someone could help with this idea.

Well, it'd be a tonne of help if you'd test my work with me
I've managed to get shell root, but for some reason it still will not let me push files to /system/ or to the /data/ partitions. Finding out a workaround. Although, I've noticed a "recovery" folder created in /mnt/sdcard/ by default (after I factory restored my ST25i). Wondering if the phone crashes, it'd load a .sin or .img file from it?
If anyone can help, do all NXT line devices have this folder in their /mnt/sdcard?
-Pokoby
Never noticed that. I´m upgrading my software and i you´l see if i have one named recovery.
Edit: I also have that folder. Any idea?

Kind of. On one of my friends' crappy Chinese android phones had one, and it booted either a .elf or recovery.img file from it if the system crashed in some way (as in total lock up, not just an app force closing). I may have to test this, but Sony aren't stupid, so I reckon it'll have something to do with engineering.
This is a folder created by system because i deleted and made a hard reset and the foder was there again. What is the purpose of that folder? How can we use it?

So far, I put the file for ClockworkMod Recovery in there. I made a batch file which essentially sends a couple hundred bizarre requests through ADB, which crashed the phone. Phone froze, did a reboot but no luck. I don't think there's any prime reason for it.
it´s not possible to put a rooted image file in there and use it somehow?

More serious now.
Why does exist that folder?
Well good luck.
Realising that the recovery folder was relatively pointless from a rooting standpoint, I have managed to compile a bunch of .bat files which can and have successfully rooted my Xperia U. I believe I'll need to get permission from whoever made zergRush to distribute this, unless somebody tells me otherwise. Nevertheless, it is a modified version of zergRush. If you want technical details, PM me about it and I'll be happy to talk. But all it does is gain shell root access and push files, in a very similar way to that of the Xperia S rooting method.
I'll hopefully have an upload later today, but in preparation:
Use Flastool to flash the stock .564 firmware
Wipe EVERYTHING in Flashtool
Reflash the .564 firmware without wiping /data/ and such (Not too sure if necessary, but is required in the process)
Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for ADB and such (A no brainer)

will there ever be a way to root without wiping data etc? i've only recently upgraded to ics, and my phone is set up exactly as i want it now, except battery life is awesome, so i want to root so that i can use setcpu or similar to underclock.

Which phone are you using? There isn't an ICS ROM for the Xperia U. If you have the Xperia S, there's a seperate rooting guide available on these forums

Is anyone yet able to root his/her Razr running stock ics android 4.0.4 the t-mob leak ics?
Has anyone tried adam outler's root method on it?
Is any exploit working!?
Please help
Hi
The only think on me to get this tmobile ics rooted is restoring a previously rooted device.
Mean. Restoring manually a su-backup or a rooted nandroid backup of the system
But, how?
Folks with chinese ics can restore safely the tmobile nandroid bkp, root and build another nandroid bkp with root
I cant do that because I've downgraded to gb from chinese leak, so, you may be able to find someone to do this setup.
Or,
You can try restore my su-backup with terminal, like I've posted in ics thread
This way
Code:
./system/su-backup
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system
rm /system/bin/su
ln -s /system/su-backup /system/bin/su
And here's my su bkp
http://db.tt/L9TLf2xg
to put the su bkp on system folder use astro file nanager
Good luck

Yes, you can.
just use astro file manager to put it in system folder
To restore su to system/bin you'll need to set permissions with terminal like I pointed
The other way is getting a rooted nandroid bkp from someone in chinese leak that had flashed tmobile nandroid. A lot of work
Good luck

Btw. You'll not restore su with vodoo but in terminal you see?
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2
You can't do it using Astro or any other file manager because it simply won't let you move system apps around,I can't do it through terminal either because it needs "permissions" which we non-rooted users do not have,as for the nandroid back up,that seems like TOO much work to do for me at least. Thanks again for all your help!

This is kind of funny
The fact that you can write things in /system folder is because you mount is as rw. You can mount is as rw because you got root.
su-backup need the suid permission to do the job.. There's no way you can assign it without a root privileges..
it's like "No root no talk".. haha
Be patient guys... We are working very hard on that...Just tried a lot of things. It is really my luck, that I get help from a few really talentet guys, even one dev from the defy section is helping me a lot, and Spryte also takes his time with me to do this. For today we're out, just spendet about 10 (!) hours today to get this working. Maybe we'll have success tomorrow.....I don't make any promises, but it looks good...

I think its funny too, indeed. But not to guys stuck in tmobile ics. As I said before, I didn't realized the root requeriment to move a file to system folder or changing permissions. I simple use root all the time and missed a 'shot' while trying to help. lol

I know you're trying to help, But I feel it's not ok to give confusing advice.
I've spent some time analyzing the 4.0.4 kernel. Here's what I found out.
1.With 4.0.4 onwards, google patch the kernel memory vulnerabilities.
What this means is : Rooting via mempodroid is not possible.
2.Motorola have patching all symlink vulnerabilities that was present in older kernel. They even block shell acess to /data (except for /data/tmp).
What this means is : Rooting via motofail is not posibble.
3.With tmde 4.0.4 leaks, the "Secure Version" of certificate have been upgraded.
What this means is : Downgrading via sbf is not posibble.
Hope this will help somebody figuring out of what is happening now.
---------- Post added at 10:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:59 AM ----------
Here's the details of the "Secure Version" upgrade
From ver 2 to 3
devtree
devtree_backup
boot
recovery
cdrom
From ver 3 to 4
cdt.bin
system
What is interesting here is:
The "Secure Version" upgrade from 2 to 3 match with XT912 "6.7.1-68_DHD-15_M4-16" ICS leak. The only different is the certificate end bit.
XT912 ends with "FFFF0200"
TMDE ends with "FFFF0700"

That is too easy to be bricked and the worst thing is, it doesn't even got any leaked sbf..
We got another idea, but maybe this will only work on that phone where it comes from..dump the whole system partition, so you get it including the signature, put the su binaries into it, set permissions and repack it in linux, you should be able to flash it using RSD,

Hello,
I have i idea, i know if it's works
You need su-backup from rooted razr with rootkeeper
And place this files in sdcard/su-backup/
he must type this command in terminal or Gscript
Code:
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard/su-backup/ /system/su-backup
Use rootkeeper normaly
I know if this command will work without root thank for your feedback
So I was bored at work and did something stupid. Now I'm wondering if there is some way to fix it without having to flash my entire phone.
Is there someway a single file can be deleted using a CWM update zip. The file is the ported version of google now and having installed it using root explorer it is stopping my phone from booting entirely.
The file is "system/app/velvet.apk".
If anyone is experienced at CWM and knows how this can be achieved then I would be extremely grateful.
SOLUTION: Flashed a stock nandroid backup of the system, managing not to lose my data.

I would imagine you could use adb to delete the file. Install the Android SDK on your computer and use adb shell to delete the offending file from bootloader mode. Havent tried it before myself, but I believe that's what adb is for amongst other things?
p.s. You should post this in Q&A forum and you might get a better response. This is not dev related.

Ok will try it at work, or at home. Thanks for the suggestion. Will post in the Q&A forum as well.
Velvet.apk isn't that the voice reg. From jellybean, that shouldn't stop your phone from booting.the app would only FC.
Adb or reflash as suggested above
Tell someone to make it cwm flashable. Boot to recovery and flash. Make a new thread or ask for this a mod to rename it.
Something like this " make velvet.apk cwm flashable".
Cheers

I am running stock DNA, rooted, and with CWM touch recovery. For myself, being root is not merely a luxury, it is a need. Most importantly, I cannot stand having a crippled unix terminal without busybox, which of course, requires root.
I know not what the imminent OTA will bring, but root is too precious to risk losing. I would therefore like to engage in a DNA-specifc discussion about disabling the OTA update.
From what I can tell so far, the two methods include:
1) renaming the otacerts.zip file in /etc/security to a .bak file. This will not work in the present case, since /etc is mounted at /system/etc, and /system can only temporarily be mounted rw due to us being stuck with "S-ON" for now.
2) installing "FOTAkill.apk", or, flashing its corresponding zip (attached below) in custom recovery. Again, in the present case, this file was written for the EVO, and will most certainly not work. The updater-script in the zip can be modified to reflect the correct mount points, but there is a corresponding binary which I have no clue contains what, and would certainly need some expert opinion about.
Any ideas ye fine fellers?
You could always do load ota root keeper from the market back your root up temp un root via app update ota and then re root using the app, I have done this on other devices and I never lost root. Worked well. Might be worth a shot.

There are system writable kernels out there, and you can always rename your files in recovery. S-Off is not an issue in this scenario.

I have indeed heard this alternative thrown around but I am not willing to chance it; I have seen an equal amount of horror stories about people having their systems fried with this method (the Droid X for instance, which I had and where the last update broke root).

I will look at what's out there and if it is stable enough to be flashed. How does one rename files in recovery though? I rebooted into CWM (touch) and I see no such option - unless you can remount a partition and rename files in it somehow.

This avenue seems promising. Has anyone tried this before? Also, how does one delete these in the S-ON situation? (I'm assuming recovery is the answer). I feel if I remounted rw, deleted and then rebooted, they will be right back where they are.

Great... thanks! I am looking into custom kernels. By the way, if custom kernels that do allow write to /system can be concocted, why is S-ON an issue at all? I was under the impression that this has to do with NAND memory being inaccessible, which seems to be a lower level issue than the kernel.

Is there any way to push a file and set permissions using one of these modes? I can reflash ICS and do everything all over again but if I could just push a stock build.prop I think I can avoid the long way.

ADB is the Android Debugging Bridge. That's a very useful tool doing lots of things to your phone.
Installing that gets you an "adb" command that allows you to do things like push software onto your phone. (I.e. adb install something.adk".
There's an easier way.
Insert the sdcard from your phone into your PC. Copy the .adk files you care about to the top directory of that card.
Then put it back into your phone and use a file manager (root explorer, for example) to install those APKs from the SDcard.
Converting to a system app means moving it from /data/app to /system/app, which your root file manager can do for you.
However, I'm a bit worried about something: you need to understand that there are several models of the Galaxy S4.
Moving stuff between models can brick your phone. Your sig says you have a GT-I9502. Installing stuff from the I545 may or may not work. Not understanding what you're flashing usually leads to a brick.

I understand what you say so I must aquire the apps from I9500/I9505 that maybe is compatible with my I9502 to avoid bricking my phone.
Question: If I back-up these aps from an rooted I9500/I9502 and try to install on my rooted I9502 it maybe work?
Thanks again :good:

You probably won't brick your phone by installing an APK designed for another phone. If it's not compatible, the app will crash (force close) but the rest of the phone will be fine.
You do have to be careful with ROMs, rooting tools, and so forth. Those need to be designed for your specific phone model.

Heres a link for a zip containing every APK included in the Apps folder. I pulled them from a brand new Verizon Galaxy S4. https://mega.co.nz/#!ac8TgIQC!MqnkjQt_wp_SS5O0_AJ2DStlluBufdabzxU-5cq7X4E

For some reason this hasn't worked for me in the past. I tried that method to reinstall splanner and some ant+ apps that I got from a ROM file, but all I got was "app failed to install".
