Became Unrooted after firmware updated from LF9 to LG2 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks, I got a strange question that my Sprint GS3 last night got OTA updated from Version LF9 to LG2, then I found out the phone was UNROOTED. Because the Titanium Backup was not working and showed Root Access: Failed.
This was the first time my SGS 3 OTA updated, and Idk if this was normal.. Do I need to root it using the same way as the first time, or is there a modified/another method to root the phone after the firmware update for a rooted SGS3?
Any inputs are appreciated.

Official firmware wipes root on International SGS3 .

Reroot it as you did the first time.

Flash cf root again. Rom update rewrites the recovery partition in s3

Wrong section. This forum is for the I9300, not the SPH-L710. Root it however you rooted it the first time (assuming that the OTA has not blocked the method), and then do either one of the following so that you hopefully retain your root the next time another OTA arrives:
Use the Survival Mode in SuperSU if you use SuperSU;
and if not, grab Voodoo RootKeeper;
and if you don't want to install anything, read up on chattr and the immutable attribute.

That is a strange question indeed...

[Q] GT-i9300, If rooted , cant have OTA update?

My phone is GT-i9300, original stock ROM is ICS, and i have update to JB through OTA which give me XXDLJ1.
Then I root my phone by :-
1. download mode, flash CF auto root via Odin.
2. restart, install Triangle Away and reset the flash counter back
I just want to have root.
So, the question is, why I'm getting "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
If root , then can not check for OTA update anymore?
Or is there any other way? To have root only and everything else like just stock and can check/download OTA again in the future.
Thanks in advance XDA

Thats right.
But if youre on xda why do you want the OTA update anymore? Just flash a stock rom, update via odin as and when a new stock rom is available and root each time.

Thats a question that I was about to ask. . I'm having a few problems with my S3, and I want to correct them but I need root.
I also want to keep it stock, I was a flash addicted with my previous phone, but now I don't have time and I just want something that works, and I want also to be able to check for updates. .
Looking forward to more replies.

As I understood, you won't get OTA updates if rooted whereas you can get updates via kies. Flashing them will remove root though.

Thanks for replying,
I'm coming from Galaxy S1, to S2 and now S3, and Samsung is not the same anymore for me, They really listen to the customer, and always improve their UI and apps. S3 is a solution/improvement for all S2 n S1 complaints.
So, it is really nice to see some app/mod which originate from here at first, been integrate to stock rom of s3 e.g. the toggle, n the lack of led light of s2 n s1
Btw, development means, to make something unusable to become usable,, to make something good to be better.
I think, it is really convenience to just have OTA instead need to find a PC just to hv update.
As my S2, i gain root just by flashing temp CWM recovery through stock 3e recovery n then flash root. It simple as that.

I guess it is the device status "modified". If I understood well you can only get "original" when you flash a stock rom and unroot but please correct me if I am wrong as I never went back to original state till now.

Yes you are correct, if your phone is rooted it'll show modified no matter what you do.

just how often do you think an OTA update is pushed out?
Just use mobile odin if you want to flash any stock roms without needing a pc. Youll get the update far quicker via xda/sammobile than waiting for an OTA one anyway

[Q] Whats the newsest stable root for S3?

Whats the newsest stable root for S3?
I have UK voda S3 with CF root 6.4
i got an OTA message today about an update
(i am guessing that this update solves the 'exploit where your phone can be wiped' i saw on the BBC news)
Question 1
do i need to do the FW update
Question 2
'CF root' is 'Auto root' or something now. i couldnt work it out - is this the correct way to root.
Question 3
(does anyone have the link to the newest version of the UK S3 root)
Question 4
What else in in the OTA update?
Cheers
Uuuh, since when has root been unstable? LOL!

Hi do you know the answers to any of the the other questions?
Let's see here. First you're asking about root, then fw's.
Question 1
do i need to do the FW update
No you don't need to, but you will be bugged to death if you don't upgrade.
Question 2
'CF root' is 'Auto root' or something now. i couldnt work it out - is this the correct way to root.
Yes, cf root is now called cf auto root. Retains stock recovery but is flashed just like "normal" cf root. In the PDA section in pc odin or flashed through mobile odin.
Question 3
(does anyone have the link to the newest version of the UK S3 root)
There's no phone-specific or country-specific root. Cf auto root can be used for all i9300 phones, whether they're from Egypt or Holland.
Question 4
What else in in the OTA update?
How should we know?
You won't be able to install the OTA as long as you're rooted
Install Omega v40 and be done with OTA and Kies etc
Debloated and awesome, that's the Omega way. Ultima's nice too.

Cheers bud I am using KIES for the update (i did this before).
The OTA message was there to remind me there is an update, but i read before that it gripes about rooted phones.
I never ever seem to get any sensible answers if i post on XDA... so i hit the thanks button when I read yours. :good:
I still no nearer knowing what's in the new update lol
I think this is the right link to CF auto root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273

Chainfire Root works. Flashing it is an easy way to root... though there probably are easier methods.
Chainfire no longer supports this version, but it's still working just fine. Plus it installs CWM recovery, as opposed to stock recovery.

[Q] How to update my Rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 I535

Sorry to straight out ask, but I'm overly paranoid now after reading so many different threads.
I have a rooted S3, and I guess its time to update (which I've accidentally clicked update many times, lucky I have Teamwin stops the update, and I can reboot back to the old version
I'm wondering if there is a seemless way of updating. In the past I would update and have to re-root. For the most part this has worked out pretty well. I havent bricked my phone yet (knock on wood). But I've been reading and I'm not sure how to proceed from here.
Is there way to update my rooted 4.1.2 to 4.3 the way it is now? or do update the update and re-root the phone using one of the '4.3 I535' guides?
In case its needed
Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3
SCH I353
version 4.1.2

Have You already tried through KIES ? Because normally in phone settings you are not able to update it higher than 4.1.2 but in Kies I've updated mine up to 4.3 with no root so this was safe. You should try it out. When You will fail xD and "You have already installed the newest version" just flash insecure kernel with ODIN download some 4.3 official software and than install STOCK kernel. I suggest right before it to use triangle away to reset Your binary counter for fully stock S3 with no trace of rooting.

I havent tried updating yet.
Do you have a guide I can follow? Will I have to reroot when I'm done?
sorry, I'm not so good with smartphones and rooting/flashing.
You are in the wrong forum, anything you flash from here (for the i9300) will hard brick your phone. Go to the specific forum for your S3 model.

My galaxy s3 will not root!

I am trying to root my galaxy s3, I just updated the system to 4.4.2 and i planned on using cf auto root. I used odin and it said pass, but when I went on, supersu wasn't there. This phone has been rooted before and when i go into download mode, it says that qualcomm secureboot: enabled. Also, i am not able to get into my recovery. Is it locked out for some odd reason? Please help me with this situation because it is driving me crazy.
What 4.4.2 rom have you flashed? Most custom roms come rooted so I'm kinda surprised yours isn't.

qualcomm?
then it is not an i9300 international S3 but an US variant or similiar.
this forum is i9300 only, so please ask in the correct forum, where you will probably get help.

you better check your device
check your device and compare with the files you are flashing...
becouse tho root with odin is 100% secure...
here is the chainfire post on his work,,, follow the instructions

[Q] how to update a rooted S4?

I have the following rooted device:
Samsung galaxy S4
SGH-I337M 4.3
Build # ... MK6
Would like to update to Kitkat, but I want to read before doing any update. I went through several threads and didn't seem to find the exact solution. Could anyone please point me to the right posts?
You can
You'll have to use Kies or Odin to update. Just update it and wait for root
. Soon its guide will be uploaded on xda forums and parthweb.com too.

I thought updating the rooted S4 (with Kies) will possibly brick the phone? Do I need to uninstall the root apps (like Titanium backup or firewall) first before using Kies to do the update?
