Battery hog issue :( - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I am a proud and extremely satisfied owner of a GS3 for two months now. However, I have a very annoying and obtrusive problem I can't seem to be able to fix.
Every time after I charge the phone, I got the habit to always check in betterbatterystats for a partial wakelock, named *overflow* which gets stuck running each and every time after fully charging the phone. I tried stopping various apps with absolutely no success in cutting the *overflow* wakelock. The only way that I know of stopping overflow is by rebooting the phone and after that partial wakelock usage goes back to normal. In case I don't restart the phone and leave the *overflow* process as is the battery will drain in about 9 hours to about 20%
My FW version is XXLFB and this issue started occurring after I upgraded from XXLF2 to this version, before the upgrade I still had this problem, but only once in several charge cycles.
My phone is completely stock and unrooted.
Guys, I would really appreciate any assistance on this, so please help me to figure this out, I have a gut feeling that this is something easily fixable

[Q] Battery Drain Problem

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

[Q] MediaServer ICS 4.0.4 massive battery drain loop

Hello!
I am a long-time lurker of XDA Forums and had an issue that I could not resolve on my own. I am hoping the community can help me with this issue as it is completely driving me crazy and hurting my business life!
I have upgraded my Xoom 4G to 4.0.4, stock, locked, not rooted. Factory reset recently and have tried everything to my knowledge to fix the following issue.
The mediaserver is in a constant loop. There are no music files, pictures, anything on the device right now. Here are the few logs that have looped (I used OS monitor to find)
Code:
setup_dma
cpcap_audio_configure_power: regulator -> stanb
cpcap_audio_configure_power: regulator -> enable
tear_down_dma
setup_dma
cpcap_audio_configure_power: regulator -> stanb
cpcap_audio_configure_power: regulator -> enable
tear_down_dma
It happens every few seconds and keeps the tablet awake constantly. The battery is in a huge drain. I have no idea why this is happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone has any input I would be greatly appreciative...
Battery in just 4-5 hours has drained 40% with no use because of the keep awake.
After yet another battery cycle:
MediaServer is 3%
Android OS is 61%
Barely any use, screen is at 16%.
Please assist!
I decided to Flash my xoom back to 3.2.3 and do OTA updates all the way back to ICS.
I did not install any apps and went to sleep.
When I woke up I saw a 10% drain and "Android OS" was back to 80% of the battery usage and a keep awake of about 2 hours.
I know people are viewing this thread, but I am surprised no one has chimed in yet. I would appreciate the help.
Hi,
I am half watching the thread as am having a similar issue. I have an Asus Transformer and a HTC One X. On 11th June, my phone was roasting hot and had eaten all of the battery away. That was the first time and it has done it most days since. The Transformer has also done similar things since I noticed it on the phone, so am assuming the two are linked.
One Saturday 16th June, I factory reset the One X and re-installed the apps. In Sunday I re-imported the files from Dropbox. Was fine, like 2% battery use from the whole of Sunday. On Monday, issue returned. Only thing I did different was use it as a USB drive. AM therefore thinking those two are connected, but I don't know how to trace the issue.
I've been playing with LogCat and OS Monitor (following your post), but any advice on a way I can dig around to find what it's actually getting up to would be appreciated.
Wish I could help you tbh.....
Cavey
I am also having same issue with HTC SENSATION, AOKP ROM, Android 4.0.4
I went through this with my sensation as well. It was caused by an odd MP3 on my sdcard. I suggest formatting sdcard and just keeping the bare necessities.
Any details on how you found the "odd MP3." I know this is the cause for me. I needs to know what to do to log or query mediaserver to see what its grinding on.

[Q] Instant battery drain, software or battery problem?

Hi there folks, yes i'm noob, i tried to search for a similar situation but i would apreciate another opinion since i'm observing my phone and i can't understand at all. Everything started when i was on 4.0.3 stock branded and my batteriy suffered of instant drain, random reebot and stuff, i decided to move to Cyano9 but the situation was the same and so here i am on a 4.0.3 stock italian after a deep clean. The problems persist and it's get annoying. i noticed that the phone shut down mostly when i'm using it (browsing internet, downloading stuff..), in the last few hours twice while downloading from play store, and once when playing a game, and after the shut down i have problems in restarting it; when i manage to power on (sometimes recharger is needed) the battery ha 30/40/50% lower charge. First I think it was a rom problem (cyano9), but now problems won't end, the fact that the phone reboot when i'm using it does indicate that there is still a software problem or maybe it's just the battery that can't handle anymore? i have this phone since last year and previously I've noticed a general lower charge. I hope it's not an "internal" problem, i can buy another battery, but not another phone! I've tried to recalibrate several times, two or tree time waiting for total loss of percentage and recharging it for 4 hours, using recalibration tool from Google play, as i recall a wipe battery... from clockwork, but now my cell is not rooted.

Vbus_wake_lock wakelock keeping the phone awake

Hello everyone,
I've been following these forums every now and then and was very helpful when I encounter some minor problems so far.
But lately I start having a very strange problem on my mom's phone which is a Samsung Galaxy Win (i8552- stock rom- android 4.1.2) and couldn't really find a decent solution or a good explanation so far. So I decided to ask you guys.
The problem is phone is having a bit poor bettery life overall, especially while in idle. I found out most of the times it is losing 2-3% battery per hour while idling (i.e overnight). Sometimes it's slightly more 1% per hour and sometimes between 0.5-1% (which sounds more normal).
While in idle usually Androis OS seems eating up the battery around 50-60%. I disabled most of the notifications, most of the sync options (especially google ones), all kinds of screen sounds, facebook update intervals, uninstalled Avast and also disabled the location access. But these changes didn't really give a noticable difference. Battery drain inconsistency was still there.
After I noticed this strange battery drain I decided to digging it up a bit more and installed GSM Battery and wakelock detector.
Firs that I noticed in GSM battery is that the phone is awake for like 1.5 hours out of 7-8 hours of overnight idling. And Android OS kernel seemed responsible for this. But couldn't really get more clues.
Then I found more clues on the culprit in Wakelock Detector under "kernel wakelocks" tab. Which is vbus_wake_lock wakelock.
WD shows vbus_wake_lock is awake for almost an hour after the last charge, which was 7 hours ago.
After I found this I googled around a bit but couldn't really found a useful explanation except it might be caused by an apple charger. But I know that mom's using the original samsung charger.
I tried rebooting to see if it helps. It's been almost 4 hours now, phone lost around 2% battery which seems ok-ish but the vbus_wake_lock is still there with 25 minutes of awake.
So any idea. What should I do to hunt this wakelock down?
I don't really want to make her worried about her phone though, she seems happy with it, since she is playing some games and charging it every day so not really having a battery issues. But I know that there's something wrong here and I want to fix it.
So I desperately need your helps guys.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry for my English btw, as it's not my native.
Best,

[Q] Galaxy S2 CM11 Extreme battery drain problem!

Hello there, I recently installed CM11- 20141224-Nightly and now I have a serious battery drain issue on my phone. It barely stays 5 hours with minimum usage, like browsing the web reading stuff it stays for about less than 2 hours, and without using it(on sleep) drains from 90% to 75% in 2hours. Because of this I have to charge the phone like 2-3 times daily! Is this something to do with the nightly? I thought of updating it to the new nightly that appeared on the 30th of December.
Will updating my phone into the new Snapshot make things any better? Should I do it?
I tried all kinds of battery fix apps, nothing works. The battery is a bit old though, maybe like 1 and a half years and I dont know how it was like on stock because it was handed to me from someone else. I would appreciate any help please!
FYI my phone is i9100T, after upgrading to CM it became i9100. Heard somewhere its not an issue.
